The Mitre in Cambridge

This review has been written after few visits: as usual it is based on food quality, staff attitude, atmosphere and local-standard value for money. Good food, good selection of beers, good service. The atmosphere inside is exactly what you expect from a pub. The menu offers a good selections of delicious pies. Probably my favourite pub in Cambridge. Over the last twenty years I have been travelling for business (and not) reason and I have discovered a lot about the world of catering.

Great food, both of us had pie,great service lovely clean pub but toilets let them down need to be checked more often .

Amazing food, cosy old fashioned pub,lovely staff

Waited for over an hour for main food to come out after starters being cleared! One meal was not brought out until 20 mins after everyone else's mains were brought out!

Great pub, food is tremendous, i had nicholsons fish and chips-large. Didnt need a large it was massive and delicious too. Wife had brisket burger, equally as good, best burger she had in a while. If youre a guinness drinker id highly recommend it here too, very good pint. Pint of guinness, bottle of diet coke and 2 meals was £44 not too bad in todays money i guess. 9/10

Popped in for a drink,,ended up staying for dinner, great atmosphere,,the lady waiting on us was fantastic ,nothing was a problem. The food was very nice and the Guinness was a pleasure to drink 😋😁

Came for a rather unorthodox 4pm dinner in Dec, absolutely brilliant. Four different meals, all very much enjoyed (pies delicious, though very pricey). Good service (not sure why someone previously said you had to order at the bar, we had table service including drinks). A great spot near the main shopping streets. Returned Sat 17 Feb (2 of us) - I hadn't been able to book in advance online (it wouldn't work) and when I rang the lady said she was too busy to take a booking. Popped in on the day and booked for later. Arrived to be told quite rudely (older lady) that we had no booking. I must say, however busy you are (they were) there are still ways this could be dealt with without the customer feeling they have been let down, and then virtually told to naff off. I guess they will always be busy so maybe don't worry too much if a couple of people are cheesed off! We were greatly relieved to see that the young lady who had booked us in was there, and she sorted it out easily and pleasantly. Thank goodness she remembered me, and was still there, or we would have been left completely in the lurch on a busy Sat, and left with an appalling impression of the service here. The service from the two younger ladies (one fair, one dark) was excellent. Food good. Though I have thought before, and still do, that the chicken/chorizo dish is so oily it becomes (for me) inedible before it is finished. This is a really lovely pub and we may return, but our experiences have been very varied and it does seem a bit understaffed and chaotic.

We came in with a friends and family discount and as two former Nicholsons employees, and were greater with staff who seemed like they’d rather be anywhere else, and after having our order taken we recieved our drinks, my friends came in a visibly dirty glass, that was returned immediately because just wiping it with a napkin brought off dirt from inside the rim, it was replaced by the server who from then out was way more friendly and helpful. As always with Nicholsons, the food was lovely and was the redeeming factor for the trip

Our new favorite pub in Cambridge! I've been here twice now with friends and we've all gotten different dishes that have been excellent. Great service and atmosphere. Also, super pet friendly so that's a plus!

Just went in for drinks to wrap up birthday celebrations, great music and atmosphere on a Saturday night.

Excellent pub with speciality pies (magnificent) and their own (very tasty) Pale Ale. Fish & chips done in a very light batter. Atmosphere a bit too busy & noisy for some. They’d got our reservation but “lost” our table so we ended up eating in the bar area, but they handled it well.

As pies go they had an excellent selection. The wife had the fish pie and loved it, I had Norwich pie, with the in house Ale used with the meat, gravy was excellent, and so to the pie and mash, but the carrots I found to be slightly salty.

Only been twice for quick drinks and it's a very cozy pub, staff is friendly and it's well located!

Very relaxing with lovely food and a great choice from the bar. Really looked after me and mobility scooter . Proper accessible toilet on the flat. No stairs. Many thanks to George the Barman for his help and joviality

Although we enjoyed our food at the Mitre, the service was very poor. We waited an hour from ordering for our main course to arrive, At no point during our wait did the waitress come and apologise for the delay, despite other tables clearly having the same problem. I feel that if there are staff shortages, which can happen at any establishment then an approximate waiting time should be noted on the bar or told to the customers.

Lovely place, friendly and polite staff, fast service and the food was so good! I highly recommend this place.

A really lovely pub. Large dining area with more pub seating at the front. Staff were nice and good selection of drinks available! Food looks good too, although we didn’t eat.

Lady serving food was lovely & very attentive to all the tables, a credit to the place. Food came out in reasonable time & was decent pub grub. Nice atmosphere for a lunch.

Called in for a drink and coffee early lunchtime Great classic pub with good variety of beers and whisky. Traditional furniture in accordance with the pubs age and interesting history. Staffing was very good and pricing good for a central pub. Good atmosphere with plenty of comfortable chairs. Good dining area which unfortunately we had no time to partake of. If you want to take a friend to a traditional pub with a history this is thecone for you. It's dog friendly too. Will visit again to try some of their wishes with a friend

We popped in for lunch and a pint. I wasn't over impressed with the mashed potatoes, but the beer was very nice

Nice atmosphere and the chicken dippers are ntasty, but holy moly the drinks are expensive. More than £6 for a pint of Henry westons when you can get 3 bottles for £6 in Tesco is a bit much.

Popped into the Mitre between Christmas and New Year for a drink. Was served quickly by friendly bar staff and had a pleasant pint during our day trip to the city. Didn't stop for food, but the portions looked decent so would be tempted to return on another day

Chill atmosphere, perfect for a few drinks whilst visiting in Cambridge. Plenty of alcohol free options which I had as the designated driver. Staff were friendly and quick service

Great pub, good ales, great staff but toilets need some TLC. Floor in right state, no tops on taps and hand dryer doesn't work, shame when rest of pub is ace.

Ribeye to die for, best Guinness in town ! Definitely worth a visit if you’re passing by . Friendly staff with great knowledge.

Best pub in Cambridge! Delicious food, well kept beer and the service is always top notch. Needs a dart board to be perfect.

What a gem ! Warm and friendly . Amazing hand made pies and a lentil cottage pie worthy of 5 stars with lovely roasted carrots and tender stem broccoli . If they would have sold pies to take away we would have taken some home .

We had lunch here and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The Mitre has welcoming staff and excellent service. Our food came fairly quick and delivered in quality and flavour. We enjoyed all our dishes especially the Steak and the Burger. To finish we tried their Sticky Toffee Pudding which was amazing; it was rich and light and the ice cream complimented it well. The atmosphere and the dog friendly aspect was great detail as well. I will definitely be back!

Was served my Aaron and Ben and were absolutely lovely. The service was amazing and would 100% come back again. Any woman would be lucky to have Aaron as a husband in the future, a true gentleman.

Decided to chose the pub for lunch. Just two of us dining. The service period after ordering was very slow, seemed to not have enough staff for the time of day as were darting between bar service and the taking food to customers. When food arrived it didn’t match quality to price, it was not warm enough. £34 for two people was a lot based on what we got and the quality.

Great pub proper historic,great location some nice ales and bar staff really friendly I had to have the titanic plum Porter which was a great pint,some lovely comfy chairs to sit in as well cracking

Pub interessante e tipico di Cambridge: passandoci davanti ha catturato la ns attenzione e curiosità. Il locale è ben tenuto, pulito e ordinato: al bar fa bella foggia di sé un distributore doppio di birre alla spina, birre di diversi gusti. Scegliamo un'ambrata british original, che, come sempre, risulta "molle" al gusto, ma nel pieno della tradizione inglese. Scegliamo un ocean fish & chips, fatto con eglefino (ho dovuto andare su Wikipedia x conoscere questo pesce...), scampi impanati, patatine, salsa tartara e piselli in crema: tenerissimo il pesce, saporite le patate, unico difetto...tutto molto unto (ecco perché sul menu il piatto riporta 1223 kcal... Concludiamo con un espresso (no, non ci siamo!) accompagnato da una buona tortina alla frutta. Paghiamo 65 pounds: do 3 palline per l'untuosita' davvero eccessiva della pietanza. Varrebbe la pena ritornare x provare altre specialità, magari al grill per ridurre l'unto...

+ plenty of calories per meal - Bad service: you have to order everything at the bar, got the wrong main course, didn't get my drink, had to wait long to get refund on the drink and had to pay the entire meal again in order to (hopefully) receive te refund in a few days.

My favourite pub in Cambridge! Cool, authentic atmosphere, excellent English cuisine, very friendly service.

Up to Cambridge by train yesturday to meet a relative and do some Christmas shopping. She recommended The Mitre for a light lunch and by the time we arrived it was not that busy. Ordered our lunches and then had to ask server where they were as had been sitting for over half hour by then. My puy lentil and veg cottage pie was rather shriveled looking and the bowl was so hot could not touch it let alone eat it. The long stem broccoli was so hard to cut and very chewy to eat, not very pleasant plus I ended up with a big blood blister on my tongue from burning my mouth trying to eat the cottage pie. Still very painful today. Granted it was tasty but the blister was something I could have done without. Maybe a look into health and safety in the kitchen?

Great food, great value for money - two of us had pies and one sea-bass and it was alll very tasty and plenty of it - also good value for money

Bij een pub hoort een huiskamergevoel en dat had dit niet. Gelijk betalen en de dame in de bediening niet al te vriendelijk. Op de kaart staan heerlijke pie’s en fish en chips bijvoorbeeld. Wij drinken hier twee bieren en vertrekken dan weer.

On recommendation from son my other half and I decided to try lunch here. The pub is very old and retains that oldy world vibe, we wanted to try the speciality pies my hubbies first choice was not available so he had the steak and ale which he said was delicious. As I do not eat red meat I ordered the chicken pie but that was also unavailable so I went for the chicken schnitzel which I enjoyed. The toilets were very clean which I think is probably a good guide to general cleanliness, we will definately eat at the Mitre next time we have lunch in town. The only reason I docked a star was due to our first choices not being available.

The Mitre is a traditional English pub. Serving a wide selection of beers and fine wines. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly. A good selection on the menu we had chicken pies which were delicious. Definitely will go back

We came to Cambridge from far and wide to attend a wake for our Uncle at Magdalene College just a few doors down from here. We had lunch first for 6 of us and it was delicious and the service was excellent. I found all staff to be friendly and attentive. We then left to go to the wake and Jamie offered to keep us an area free for later as we would be returning somewhere for dinner. As we hadn't made any plans at that point we didn't take him up on his offer, however at 8.55pm (5 minutes before the dinner menu stopped serving) a few family members screeched to a halt at the bar to get dinner for a group who desperately needed fed by this point (canapes just didn't hit the spot). Jamie and Lily and the kitchen staff couldn't have been more helpful and made the whole experience one I will remember for years to come. This is definitely a great pub to go to and enjoy the staff and pies if you're ever in Cambridge.

Visited whist visiting family in Cambridge. Have been before so knew it was a good choice. It wasn’t too busy to start with and out order was taken. We ordered a starter to share and mains. By the time we were ready for the mains they had got really busy with a tour group so there was a delay, Jakub was very apologetic and offered us complimentary drinks. He also gave a discount from our bill which I appreciated. Overall we enjoyed our visit

After an exhausting day in Cambridge, The Mitre was a warm, friendly oasis. My fish pie was excellent. The Chef (MV) even came out to chat. Lovely guy/ lovely food. Like home cooking not mass catering!
