The Mitre in Cambridge

First time in Cambridge, I found this Lovely pub, in the city central, Very good gnocci pasta, Good booze, I will be back.

Perfect pub in Cambridge to stop and recover from the hell of shopping. Food looks good too.

Having been to the Mitre a few times I can honestly say that on the latest experience we will not be returning. Nothing was great! Service was shocking. On a Sunday, no roasts left or pies. Every table bar none had issues.

Avoid, terrible service, roast dinner was cold, my partners roast chicken wasn’t cooked, wouldn’t waste your time coming here, staff were very unprofessional.

Really good all round pub. Great selection of beers on tap as well as bottles and spirits. Very friendly staff. Definitely one of my favourite pubs in the whole city

Cosy lunch after a lot of walking round cambridge Cute italian behind the bar recommended the sandwich which was just what we needed Such an old traditional setting, really in keeping with the history of the town so was a great spot for us visitors

Lied to me!! Tried ordering food and they said the kitchen was closed..then while I drank my pint, two tables successfully ordered food!!!

Stopped here for late afternoon meal - pub was quiet . Ordered salmon fishcakes , and service was efficient by pleasant staff . The fishcakes were lovely - hot and tasty , and were served with new potatoes, and a crisp and fresh salad. Cost was £12.

Nice staff but the food was a let down . We decided on Sunday roast , the beef had run out so went for chicken instead. The roast after a very long wait with stuffing balls missing. Chicken skin not crispy, veg undercooked , broccoli was just stalks . The missing stuffing arrived at the end of the meal . The waitress apologised for the meal and knocked £7 off . A lot of people sat around us seemed to leave their food , a change in the kitchen maybe required .

Nice pub, slightly less busy than others in Cambridge

We had a fantastic lunch in Cambridge, with a Sunday roast beef and two pies. We've been here before, and it was well worth the return. The staff were helpful and friendly.

Good place to have a couple of beers. Fish and chips was nice too, but don’t expect something more than bar food. But it was tasty.

Great staff, great beer, dog friendly, and really good food. I had steak and ale pie which was delicious and my wife had lamb shank shepherd's pie, equally as good.

Table was available early which was great, waiter friendly and remembers orders without writing down which is a bit nerve wracking but he did it correctly. Beef pie was very poor, 2 bits of beef only, at first when we fedback we were told the pies were made offsite so it wasn’t their fault which wasn’t a great answer. However she returned to say she could refund the cost of that meal which I said was appreciated, we actually had 20-% taken off the drinks too. So actually it was resolved well in the end but would be better if the pies were up to scratch as my brother was very hungry & likes a pie !

The best fish and chips in UK. We received super services from henoc! Great bear aa well. 😃

I had the slow cook rib pie and lamb pie, and my friends had fish pie. The fish pie had a very good taste - it was smashed potatoes with cheese, salmon and 2-3 shrimps with carrot and broccoli. About the beer, Nicolson’s pale ale is the best or one the best in England

2 beers, both too hot. 2 chips, both too cold, reheated on request, but in the microwave. NOT recommended at all... and unfortunately it was our last night in England

First time visiting today. Lovely steak and ale pie and slow cooked beef pies. Both served with fresh creamy mash, carrots, and yummy gravy. We would certainly go back and totally recommend it.

One of my most favourite and go to pubs in cambridge always friendly and efficient staff, always has a great relaxed atmosphere. You really can't beat a Nicholson's Pale Ale.

Food was actually disgusting. We were in a group of 5. Two of us ordered steaks that were barely edible. Like a dog’s chew toy. Chewy, gristly, without seasoning. Two of us ordered the worst shepherds pies we’ve ever eaten. Actual dog water quality. Tasted cheap, frozen and flavorless. The fifth person ordered a burger that was decent. Food was way overpriced, robbery. Beers were decently priced. Vibe was ok, food slow to come out. Friendly staff. Skip this place, a must-avoid pub while in Cambridge

Great beer, great cocktails, great food, friendly welcoming interested staff.

Food was enjoyable. The broccoli served with Shepards pie was tasty with an added texture of roasted crunchy rosemary twigs. The salmon starter was a little disappointing, didn’t expect it to be served on bread but would prefer just salmon. Service in dining area was great. Thanks!

Ordered 4 large fish and chips. Fish was a small portion of burned and broken-up fillet (I don't think we got a whole fish fillet in each order). The fish was so bad it was mostly inedible. Chips were ok, if slightly dry. If I had received this in the restaurant I would have sent it back. This is awful.

This is the first time I've eaten here my friend and I loved our starter and main meal at lunch time and the service was good and I wish I had spoken to the chef the food was excellent and we will be back again

Proper English pub in Cambridge. Had a very good Christmas roast here in 2023, very good and big plates for very reasonable price. Anything you’d expect from a traditional pub in England.

Our first visit to Cambridge and had a great experience here for sunday lunch. Plenty of choice for vegetarians which I always appreciate. My partner had the wild boar and chorizo pie which was apparently delicious. Special mention to the lovely Italian gentleman behind the bar, fantastic customer service and great bloke!

Beer, cappucucino, Seafood was great.service was great too.

Welcoming and friendly staff. The food is fresh and tasty. The atmosphere is good and it is not noisy. We had a nice time for lunch.

The food and staff are all amazing, but its their new Manager that brought my experience down, I overheard his name is Henoc? He was rude to both my wife and the staff, constantly disappearing when more than a few customers walk up to the bar for drinks, leaving a single employee to handle everything when there was a long queue. If you want to visit this pub, and you should, just remember to ask the staff if Henoc is in; if he is, leave, and come back when he's not.

The food here is absolutely delicious! flavors of the beef brisket was amazing and cooked to perfection. Highly recommend, Thank you! all four of us enjoyed our food!

Great, authentic food...service a little slow

A welcoming place for a pint after a long walk in Cambridge. Sadly the food isn’t all that, we waited an age for our food to arrive and when it did after a 50 min wait i wished i listened to my head and grabbed a meal deal from the nearest ‘every little helps’ branded supermarket. I ordered a chefs platter, I’m sorry chef but if that’s a platter I’m a spaceman ! What turned up was 1/2 a chioritzo sliced, 6 soggy green peppers, some wilted leaves, a couple of breadcrumbed round things that didn’t exactly awaken the taste buds and what can only be described as 2 star shaped oven cooked ( from frozen and just out of a bag ) chicken things….i say chicken things as they tasted a bit like chicken but I couldn’t be sure and they looked awful. The sort of food I’d expect to see a 5 year old birthday party. This must be why we had waited 50 mins for our food to arrive as I guess they sent a runner to a nearby shop to purchase said frozen chicken things. Overall a nice pub but overpriced bland food, maybe introduce sandwiches to your lunchtime menus.

Great pub in the centre of Cambridge. Great beer, food and staff. Well worth a visit.

A small variety of vegan options is available, the salad/bowl I chose was a little vinegary though. They have their local ale brand which is wonderful, the atmosphere is pleasant.

Called as passing, wanting something to eat and drink. Staff was helpful and polite, and the food was good, a little pricey for what it was, but certainly couldn't complain.

The calamari sharer was gorgeous, nicely seasoned batter and melt in the mouth calamari. Their wild boar and chorizo pie was filling and flavoursome. The servers were really helpful and accommodating to my nut allergy. I would highly recommend The Mitre as a Cambridge pitstop!

I require Gluten Free and Adam & Jack were amazing in guiding me through the menu and reassuring me. I don’t know the name of the chef but both my husband and I really enjoyed our meal. Thank you so much. 😊

We were sat waiting for our food for 40 minutes, no member of staff came to update us or apologised for the wait. Staff member finally came outside but didn't acknowledge us. I asked how long our food would be & he didn’t know and it took him 10 minutes to find out! Offered us a free drink but said I couldn’t have the drink I wanted as it was a bottle. Our food came after an hour and they missed off the sauce that came as part of the meal, asked for the sauce and this took too long to get also, I asked if I could get a refund for the food as it had taken so long and I was told no. Terrible customer service.

Freya was very knowledgeable and helped with drink choices, i had a rhubarb cider which was very nice. The food was lovely, overall a great visit. Would definitely return if we were in Cambridge again.

We've visited the Mitre on many occasions in the past, always had a good experience. Food very good. Yesterday at a very busy time at the last minute we needed to add another person and a well behaved toddler on our table 7 in total. The staff were so accommodating and helpful within no time were able to sort out some space for us. They were so lovely and helpful through our lunch, awesome ✨

We had a variety of pie's and absolutely fabulous 👌. Service was slow and had to keep looking for someone to attend us, but it was busy and only 2 waitresses. Apart from that everything else was great.

This review has been written after few visits: as usual it is based on food quality, staff attitude, atmosphere and local-standard value for money. Good food, good selection of beers, good service. The atmosphere inside is exactly what you expect from a pub. The menu offers a good selections of delicious pies. Probably my favourite pub in Cambridge. Over the last twenty years I have been travelling for business (and not) reason and I have discovered a lot about the world of catering.

Loved this pub. Grab a table by the window, enjoy a beer and watch the world go by. Brillant.

I ordered 4 pies with side orders. The delivery was done 15 min earlier than requested, which was 18.30 and nobody was at home at the time to receive it. The courier called me and I said I was on my way- I arrived at 18.25 (courier had gone in the meantime) to see a partial order delivered- only the pies without side order. The courier should have noticed that on the delivered bag it was written 1 of 2, meaning something was missing. I was unable to ask where the second bag was as the courier ar

Amazing food, cosy old fashioned pub,lovely staff

Waited for over an hour for main food to come out after starters being cleared! One meal was not brought out until 20 mins after everyone else's mains were brought out!

Great pub, food is tremendous, i had nicholsons fish and chips-large. Didnt need a large it was massive and delicious too. Wife had brisket burger, equally as good, best burger she had in a while. If youre a guinness drinker id highly recommend it here too, very good pint. Pint of guinness, bottle of diet coke and 2 meals was £44 not too bad in todays money i guess. 9/10

Popped in for a drink,,ended up staying for dinner, great atmosphere,,the lady waiting on us was fantastic ,nothing was a problem. The food was very nice and the Guinness was a pleasure to drink 😋😁

Came for a rather unorthodox 4pm dinner in Dec, absolutely brilliant. Four different meals, all very much enjoyed (pies delicious, though very pricey). Good service (not sure why someone previously said you had to order at the bar, we had table service including drinks). A great spot near the main shopping streets. Returned Sat 17 Feb (2 of us) - I hadn't been able to book in advance online (it wouldn't work) and when I rang the lady said she was too busy to take a booking. Popped in on the day and booked for later. Arrived to be told quite rudely (older lady) that we had no booking. I must say, however busy you are (they were) there are still ways this could be dealt with without the customer feeling they have been let down, and then virtually told to naff off. I guess they will always be busy so maybe don't worry too much if a couple of people are cheesed off! We were greatly relieved to see that the young lady who had booked us in was there, and she sorted it out easily and pleasantly. Thank goodness she remembered me, and was still there, or we would have been left completely in the lurch on a busy Sat, and left with an appalling impression of the service here. The service from the two younger ladies (one fair, one dark) was excellent. Food good. Though I have thought before, and still do, that the chicken/chorizo dish is so oily it becomes (for me) inedible before it is finished. This is a really lovely pub and we may return, but our experiences have been very varied and it does seem a bit understaffed and chaotic.

We came in with a friends and family discount and as two former Nicholsons employees, and were greater with staff who seemed like they’d rather be anywhere else, and after having our order taken we recieved our drinks, my friends came in a visibly dirty glass, that was returned immediately because just wiping it with a napkin brought off dirt from inside the rim, it was replaced by the server who from then out was way more friendly and helpful. As always with Nicholsons, the food was lovely and was the redeeming factor for the trip

Just went in for drinks to wrap up birthday celebrations, great music and atmosphere on a Saturday night.

Excellent pub with speciality pies (magnificent) and their own (very tasty) Pale Ale. Fish & chips done in a very light batter. Atmosphere a bit too busy & noisy for some. They’d got our reservation but “lost” our table so we ended up eating in the bar area, but they handled it well.

As pies go they had an excellent selection. The wife had the fish pie and loved it, I had Norwich pie, with the in house Ale used with the meat, gravy was excellent, and so to the pie and mash, but the carrots I found to be slightly salty.

Only been twice for quick drinks and it's a very cozy pub, staff is friendly and it's well located!

Although we enjoyed our food at the Mitre, the service was very poor. We waited an hour from ordering for our main course to arrive, At no point during our wait did the waitress come and apologise for the delay, despite other tables clearly having the same problem. I feel that if there are staff shortages, which can happen at any establishment then an approximate waiting time should be noted on the bar or told to the customers.
