The Free Press Sunday Lunch-Sunday 11 August 2024 We (my sister and myself) and two friends of ours went to the pub for a Sunday Roast, which was very traditional and very good, we did not stay for a dessert as the main was very filling. The atmosphere was good, and if you get a chance to go, it is good.

Legendary Cambridge pub packed with charm and serving excellent food.

Traditional interior. The ale was perfect and the ploughmans exceeded expectations. Will make this a pub of choice.

Just had a Sunday lunch here with my friend. Very friendly and welcoming people as soon we walked in. Lovely food and they went the extra mile to accommodate our fussy dietary request to their already super menu , Thank you ! We will be back Highly recommended!

Brought in-laws here visiting from Canada, was an ideal setting and pub environment. loved it here and will be back regularly now I live close by.

The Free Press is a very friendly pub with good food and great beer. I was there recently for a reunion of friends, a reunion which the Press accommodated perfectly. The welcome was friendly, the beer a delight and the overall experience a triumph. Thank you for helping us to a memorable evening.

Another superb Friday evening at the Free Press to kick off our reunion weekend 48 years after we all met as students in Cambridge - as ever, the food and drink were great, and the staff are so welcoming :))

Character place with tons of charm.Cosy atmosphere with friendly , polite & proficient crew that work hard to keep you happy. Beer selection is great with local ales, they have a summer cocktail/ cocktail menu also!! It's a tad small but expands deceptively into more than adequate further rooms with a convivial outdoor seating area, glorious if you're lucky to get the weather. It's on 'my go to again ' list. 10/10.

Take away ruined because they poured (flooded) all the sauces and condiments on top of the grain salad, pita and kebab, making most of it a soggy unenjoyable, inedible mess by the time it got home.

Ok folks I am bias over this pub in that I love the place, but I need to review two of its pizzas as I will name as cindera and frankinsine. This pub has produced amazing pizza. Lately it's got more experimental. Such as I will call the cinderaler pizza the curry pizza which was impossible but danced over tounge to the insane kebab or frankinsine pizza it should not work but even the cabbage was perfect. Wrong wrong wrong but so good. I do not understand how they can produce meals to this standard but they do. 10/10.

Great traditional greene king boozer featuring old fashioned pump clips. Inside has traditional leather seated pub pews and the garden has an interesting little writing den/snug room. Ale served well and about 7 on. Good price for the area at 5-550 a pint

Three of us fitted in the tiny snug very comfortably and we even had the door closed and our own private the of the bar, very nice.

Great little back street pub with an authentic feel. Not overly fancy but clean and well presented. Food and drinks were good simple pub fare. Staff friendly. Mix of customers gave it a friendly buzzy feel.

Very atmospheric traditional pub. Good selection of beers.However, while the fish was average, the chips were hard as rocks. The pea soup was fine, but the eggplant caserole had too much pepper. Rather slow service.

It's a bit off the tourist trail, but definitely worth a visit. You're almost guaranteed a seat here, even at Cambridge's busiest times. Plenty of outside seating, not the greatest of views - but you can do that after your visit! Great selection of ales including some lovely guest beers, which you can taste before you buy. And a very historic pub too. The locals will give you the information, and plenty to see on the walls. Add it to your Cambridge itinerary.

Came to Cambridge to see a performance at the Arts Theatre and searched reviews for somewhere to eat before the show. The Free Press had favourable write ups so we booked a table. What a nice place! Friendly staff (and locals) and great pub food. Don't go if you're expecting fine dining and waitress service, this is a small pub serving what I imagined to be mainly locals, and it is a world apart from the larger chain pubs looking for the tourist trade. We had the lemongrass chicken skewers and a chicken burger and chips, both really tasty, good home cooked food and I loved the hot sauce over the chicken. Sadly we witnessed some of the more mature students having a scuffle outside the pub with what appeared to be baseball bats, no serious injuries though and they came inside for refreshments afterwards so seemed to have made up. Thank you, we will be back.

The best pub we visited out of about 15 this long weekend in Cambridge. Cellar quality is very good indeed, with a nice range of five or six ales on when we arrived. I was told by the very nice staff that the pub rotates the guest ales, which explains e.g. Bass pale and Twickenham Brewery being available on cask. We didn't eat but stayed until last orders on the Saturday, and look forward to coming back soon!

We had lunch with our two daughters here today. The food was absolutely lovely and the service was the best. The caramel mouse beat the salted caramel cheese cake.🤪 We were able to eat in the snug which was great. We cannot recommend this place enough.

An authentic pub even after decades

We turn up at the pub just after lunch had finished put the star for kind enough to make me a ploughman's lunch which is one of the best I've ever eaten. The pub has a real old school atmosphere and we really enjoyed it. Thanks

Had an absolutely fabulous meal here! I can’t wait to go back, and I want to try everything on the menu- but then I also want more roasts- so I’m now in a dilemma. The tomato chutney with the scotch eggs was excellent. The sticky toffee pudding was homemade as well, where homemade desserts are usually an indicator of food quality for me. Also the food pricing is extremely fair. I’m not even a meat and potatoes person but it was SO GOOD. The vibe is great. We were in the snug, but I saw they had games in the main area as well as dog bowls in the garden. Edit: I’ve gone back and tried a special and another dessert. Top notch, I’m a little bit of a food snob and I can’t believe the magic they’re working here in this pub. Also they are so friendly. Teriyaki mackerel with labneh, grapefruit?, and chard. Lemon posset with blackberry coulis and shortbread. Homemade and delicious and a great value. My new favorite spot. Edit: gone back a third time and they have a new kitchen team. Not good, and the sticky toffee pudding is no longer homemade.

Cracking Sunday Roast. Table for 4 booked for 12.30pm. Had lush starters - sharing Camembert and both scotch eggs, all excellent. Followed by Sunday roasts all round - two of us had the replacement aubergine schnitzel veggie option - was so good and an inspired veggie option that tasted and felt so meaty! Only thing I’d say is to go early for the roast, as by 2pm they’d run out and even at 12.40pm when we ordered, they were out of nut roasts! Beef also ran out shortly after we ordered.

A little off the beaten track but worth the walk. A proper gem! The best fish and chips we’ve had, and we’re from Yorkshire! Excellent scotch egg. Super salads. Everything prepared by people who care about food and know what they’re doing. We went twice!

Good service and food quick to arrive. A little dark inside and seating not the best if in a group. My dinner was okay but I've had nicer roasts. The pork very fatty and the roasties were a bit 'Aunt Bessies'.

It was my first visit to FP since 2008. Owner had changed. Decor had changed slightly (rowing memorabilia was gone). I think it used to be a free house and now it isn’t (at least Green King makes good ale). But this is still a solid neighbourhood pub with an honest feel to it. It was Sunday. I had the roast pork Sunday lunch (Yorkshire pudding first rate). My vegetarian daughter had the halloumi burger and gave it two thumbs up. Everything exactly as hoped for. Prices reasonable. Friendly very slightly bumbling uni-student servers. Strongły recommended as a first-class pub with a quirky name. Off the beaten track.

While staying in Cambridge, we were delighted by this pub. Very good quality of food as well as the quantity not to mention the staff, who was willing to give the best service. Needless is to say how mouthwatering the dessert was and how friendly the people were. Long story short, I highly recommend this pub to those who are visiting this amazing town. A genuine place with a warm atmosphere

Dropped on by for lunch before our train in a convenient spot tucked away about 20 minutes walk to the station but close to the Grafton centre We ordered the crispy squid, the vegetarian scotch egg and as pictured the chicken kiev, whilst all the food was delicious the Kiev was an absolute winner and everyone who tried it commented as such. The beers are reasonably priced and they have a good range of draft ales. There is a good amount of outdoor seating with some sheltered in case of rain

Visited the Free Press with our granddaughter and partner. They were delighted, as we had expected they would be. Dishes are not small ! I needed help with my excellent pork meatballs with dill . The fish and chips is a sight to behold, falling off both sides of the plate. The wine list is interesting and not too expensive. We keep returning!

Excellent food, drinks and service. We were a party of six and three dogs. We enjoyed nibbles, starters, mains and a dessert. All very tasty. It was nice to see such a varied menu, which made it all the more tempting. Plentiful portions. Food at an affordable price. A good selection of real ales and ciders. Very welcoming and efficient service. Highly recommended. Advise booking a table as it was busy.

This was an old student haunt for me. We were visiting Cambridge for the weekend and I booked the snug for my wife and I to celebrate 40 years together, and it didn't disappoint. We had a super friendly welcome and very thoughtfully there was a pot plant waiting for my wife on the table. A nice touch, and totally unexpected. The roast pork Sunday lunch was really one of the best I have had. It's great too to have a selection of well-kept beers from brewers who know their trade rather than a collection of similarly-tasting unimaginative and over hopped American Pale Ales like you find in so many pubs these days. I couldn't fault the Theakstons Old Peculier and Tim Taylor's Landlord. Great atmosphere, obviously well supported by the local community, and deservedly still as popular as it was 40 years ago.

Very cosy little pub with a cool outdoor area. Bar staff were very friendly, good selection of beers, and very reasonably priced. It was nice and quiet when I went in there but still had a chat with some fellow tourists! Will definitely be dropping in again next time I'm in town.

The pub is very authentic with good english food. We were 4 adults, with 4 different plates and nobody was disappointed. Wines by the glass are also good.

Arrived for an adhoc Sunday lunch at the Free Press. Reception at the bar was very warm and welcoming. We had a delay with our food, on enquiring why was met with a rude stroppy reply. We were told loudly by our server “was she not paid enough to deal with this!”. One empathises, I don’t feel paying nearly £40 for 2 burgers and 2 drinks to have a spotty student vent spleen at me is value for money either. Approach with caution.

24th Aug 22 had an excellent lunch provided by a friendly, welcoming team in this pub full of character. Only a short walk from Cambridge City Centre in an an attractive old residential area.

This great little pub was our local whilst we stayed in Cambridge. Drinks in the garden on a sunny Saturday and we returned for lunch on the Sunday. Friendly staff good service and nice food.

On my first visit to Cambridge for several years, I was looking for a traditional local in the Mill Road area where I could take an elderly friend for lunch and a pint, within walking distance of his house. I was delighted to find that The Free Press was just as I remembered it, with a warm welcome, an excellent choice of well-kept beers and proper pub food, rather than the burgers and pizzas which seem to be the standard offering in other pubs nearby, some of which no longer seem to offer mid-week opening at lunchtimes. This is a friendly, welcoming and deservedly popular pub and I hope to return on my next visit to the city.

We enjoyed the Sunday Roast very much! A young man from the kitchen served us, very polite and super friendly/efficient. The selection of beers is vast and they have a good selection of spirits and soft drinks. Is our favourite pub in Cambridge and the atmosphere/customer service never fails.

A Proper Pub with great hospitality, friendly staff, excellent pub food and fine beer. What more do you need. A hidden gem.
