The best pub we visited out of about 15 this long weekend in Cambridge. Cellar quality is very good indeed, with a nice range of five or six ales on when we arrived. I was told by the very nice staff that the pub rotates the guest ales, which explains e.g. Bass pale and Twickenham Brewery being available on cask. We didn't eat but stayed until last orders on the Saturday, and look forward to coming back soon!

Had an absolutely fabulous meal here! I can’t wait to go back, and I want to try everything on the menu- but then I also want more roasts- so I’m now in a dilemma. The tomato chutney with the scotch eggs was excellent. The sticky toffee pudding was homemade as well, where homemade desserts are usually an indicator of food quality for me. Also the food pricing is extremely fair. I’m not even a meat and potatoes person but it was SO GOOD. The vibe is great. We were in the snug, but I saw they had games in the main area as well as dog bowls in the garden. Edit: I’ve gone back and tried a special and another dessert. Top notch, I’m a little bit of a food snob and I can’t believe the magic they’re working here in this pub. Also they are so friendly. Teriyaki mackerel with labneh, grapefruit?, and chard. Lemon posset with blackberry coulis and shortbread. Homemade and delicious and a great value. My new favorite spot. Edit: gone back a third time and they have a new kitchen team. Not good, and the sticky toffee pudding is no longer homemade.

Cracking Sunday Roast. Table for 4 booked for 12.30pm. Had lush starters - sharing Camembert and both scotch eggs, all excellent. Followed by Sunday roasts all round - two of us had the replacement aubergine schnitzel veggie option - was so good and an inspired veggie option that tasted and felt so meaty! Only thing I’d say is to go early for the roast, as by 2pm they’d run out and even at 12.40pm when we ordered, they were out of nut roasts! Beef also ran out shortly after we ordered.

It was my first visit to FP since 2008. Owner had changed. Decor had changed slightly (rowing memorabilia was gone). I think it used to be a free house and now it isn’t (at least Green King makes good ale). But this is still a solid neighbourhood pub with an honest feel to it. It was Sunday. I had the roast pork Sunday lunch (Yorkshire pudding first rate). My vegetarian daughter had the halloumi burger and gave it two thumbs up. Everything exactly as hoped for. Prices reasonable. Friendly very slightly bumbling uni-student servers. Strongły recommended as a first-class pub with a quirky name. Off the beaten track.

This was an old student haunt for me. We were visiting Cambridge for the weekend and I booked the snug for my wife and I to celebrate 40 years together, and it didn't disappoint. We had a super friendly welcome and very thoughtfully there was a pot plant waiting for my wife on the table. A nice touch, and totally unexpected. The roast pork Sunday lunch was really one of the best I have had. It's great too to have a selection of well-kept beers from brewers who know their trade rather than a collection of similarly-tasting unimaginative and over hopped American Pale Ales like you find in so many pubs these days. I couldn't fault the Theakstons Old Peculier and Tim Taylor's Landlord. Great atmosphere, obviously well supported by the local community, and deservedly still as popular as it was 40 years ago.

We were told loudly by our server “was she not paid enough to deal with this!”. One empathises, I don’t feel paying nearly £40 for 2 burgers and 2 drinks to have a spotty student vent spleen at me is value for money either. Approach with caution.

On my first visit to Cambridge for several years, I was looking for a traditional local in the Mill Road area where I could take an elderly friend for lunch and a pint, within walking distance of his house. I was delighted to find that The Free Press was just as I remembered it, with a warm welcome, an excellent choice of well-kept beers and proper pub food, rather than the burgers and pizzas which seem to be the standard offering in other pubs nearby, some of which no longer seem to offer mid-week opening at lunchtimes. This is a friendly, welcoming and deservedly popular pub and I hope to return on my next visit to the city.

I was recommended this place to visit whilst working in Cambridge. At first, I was told it's only a few minutes away for me to search for it on google maps. Its a nice little local pub, as I walked in I was welcomed by the staff but struggled to find a seat, but managed to be directed to a table that was free.I was told that I could order at the bar after 18:00 and pay at the end. I wanted to try the must-haves that all my friends told me to get, so I got them all.Scotch Egg for starter, Burger for Main and then Ice cream for Dessert, which was the best £22 spent. The scotch egg was handmade and decent in size. if your not that hungry this is enough as a main. Then came the burger, it was superb... Again homemade with parmesan, rocket salad, etc served with chips. My only disappointment would be the chips, I'm not a great fan of chips myself but these chips were hand-cut chips, but felt like they were triple-cooked and full of grease.Overall, the best pub grub I've had in a long time and will visit the place again when I'm next in town.

Personal amigable.

Found the lovely pub based on a recommendation from a shop owner. The salad options were limited but the salad was excellent. The soup wonderful, however the scotch egg was meant to runny - not and a bit tasteless on what it was described on the menu. A pity as running scotch are great if done well.

The Free Press is a lovely old beer pub in the heart of Cambridge, hidden on a back street. It's a delightful old place where the beer is and always has been extensive and excellent. The ambience is fine too - relaxed, basic, rickety, old - a real pub. However, the food is another matter. The choice doesn't seem to match that on the menu, certainly not that on the online menus. It's basic pub food that is trying - without any flair - to be something better. It fails on this, unfortunately - the "mezze platter" was basically some big chunky pieces of carrot and celery, a huge fat slice of bread and a tin of olive oil with a small dish of runny tahini. Maybe I should not judge on one visit. The pub is a lovely place and the staff are friendly. Maybe they need a new chef. Why not just go and enjoy a beer there - it's a lovely location.

I met up with around 20 friends from our days as students in 1976-79. The pub had reserved space for us so that we could eat in comfort, and the staff were extra friendly and efficient! It’s a brilliant pub with an honest and good value menu :))

The Free Press también ofrece selecciones veganas. Excelente comida, a un precio razonable.

This is like a hidden treasure in Cambridge. Has good beer and good veg food. If you want to relax after a long day, head to this place and you would feel at home.
