In Matlock on holiday and fancied a nice country pub dinner. The moment we walked through the door we felt welcomed and was greeted by a few of the patrons who clearly love meeting and greeting new faces. This is a pleasant change. The Landlord was very friendly and we ordered drinks and Buffalo burger and onion rings. The food was lovely and the onion rings where truly huge. All in all I would recommend this pub to anyone visiting the area.

What a shame. We came here for a birthday meal - and we had a birthday to be remembered alright. What a mess! Two of our party were gluten free; when the starters arrived, one had regular bread in which was noticed by ourselves despite asking the waitress to confirm they were both gluten free. It was explained this was a computer fault; okay, fine, fair enough, I was a pub potwasher and waitress for 3 years and that can happen. Forgiven. Until our mains were brought out and one was given to the table next to us - the customer started eating - to which instead of making a fresh meal, it was slid across to our table after the other customer had already eaten a portion of it and had double dipped her fork. And the food itself? My. God. Are you looking for deep fried nachos completing an Olympic dive in oil? Chips so thoroughly limp the chef must have personally massaged each one before serving? Then this is the place. Such a disappointment, won’t be back.

Stumbled on this pub when first arrived for our holiday and went on to have two amazing dinners. The pie, twice fried chips and gravy were sublime and with veg, the dishes were beautifully presented. Added spam first time n fried bread the next day. Defo didn't do my arteries any good, but it was spot on. Coffees tasty too, and the ladies enjoyed the pancakes n veggie breakfasts. This is a historic pub in a lovely location but I would say that the decor could probably do with some updating and furniture in the beer garden could certainly use a little maintenance. The staff were very friendly and did their best to help when we asked questions. However, I'm at a loss to explain the positive reviews for the food at this pub. Perhaps, the normal chef was on holiday...? I stopped here with some friends for a Sunday roast and unfortunately it was one of the worst roasts I've ever paid for. Firstly, the chef couldn't tell us the cut of pork he was cooking (we identified it as loin when it arrived), which rang warning bells but we'd already paid and sat down. The meat was dry, the gravy was gelatinous and only barely warm, the roast potatoes were rubbery, the mash turgid and powdery, the vegetables were overcooked and unseasoned and the yorkshire pudding was burnt. I'm not going to be extreme enough to say it was the worst roast I've ever had but I definitely struggle to recall the last time I've been served a meal that was so utterly disappointing.

Last visit was approx 18 years ago, but the food is still top notch, my wife had the Chicken Hartington, chicken breast in a Stilton creamy sauce with a slice of bacon, homemade chips and salad, I had from the specials board, lambs liver with bacon in onion gravy, mustard infused mash and seasonal vegetables, highly recommended, you don't see it very often in pubs. They also keep a lovely pint of Marstons Pedigree ale Campsite at the rear of pub for caravans, motorhomes and tents, also Bank Top cafe recently opened but not had chance to visit it yet, but menu looks great, dog friendly throughout, very helpful staff, well worth a try

Not much to say other than, A brilliant little pub!. Wes was super welcoming and the food was on another level! They let us order half hour early as the chefs was already in which was nice as we was happy to wait till the kitchen opened. The atmosphere was top notch, the pub & facilities are exceptionally clean and well looked after. We camped here for £7 pp (kids are free) which is cheap in my opinion (showers are £1 coin run if you want one) and the views around the pub/field are so pretty. Enough space for easy 20+ campers/vans/ motor homes with a nice gap between them. The food and drink here is excellent value for money along with the camping. We will definitely be back in the future. Keep up the great work Wes and the team 👏

Having read the reviews before we went we were looking forward to our meal. Unfortunately we did not have the same experience as most others. We ordered quite quickly as we had two children with us. The orders for the two tables behind us were mixed up, the one to the side had a child’s meal brought - the child was already eating his meal! After about 45 minutes I asked when we’d be served our food (as by then the tables around us had all got their food). The lady behind the bar went and checked in the kitchen who told her our food had already been sent!! Definitely not. We then had to explain our order and it did arrive 15 minutes later. The food was ok but I would say it was expensive for what it was - our double cooked chips were squares of potato so it didn’t even come as described. Very disappointing

APPALLING! Service non-existent! 14 of us pre booked for a family meal. We had to pre order. Arrived on time and shown to out table. An hour and 15 minutes later still had no food although we were told at least twice that it was on its way. Eventually ONE vegetarian meal arrived and that was cold! We gave up and decided to leave. And just to make matters worse, one of our party on the way back from the toilets witness two members of staff high-fiving because the large party was leaving and it wouldn’t be as busy!!!

The pub was nice, we had an ale. So, I cannot comment on the food. We stayed at the campsite, it was very minimum, just a prking lot and toilets&showers, and it is ok compared to what you pay. But the showers were too short. One pound for 1.5 minutes, and you spend 30 sec to adjust the water temperature. So you need at least 2 pounds to a short shower. I think this needs to be improved.

Myself and two friends had done a walk to Birchover and returned to Winster to our favourite pub The Miners Standard made famous by a local author who calls it The Spinning Jenny. All three of us had the Owen Taylor Bangers and Mash best sausage I have ever had. This was helped down with a local brew from Aldwark Artisan Ales. We spent the afternoon with the great locals and the landlord even took time out of his busy day to have a chat. Very welcoming from the hosts, the food was piping hot when it arrived and was very tasty. Reasonably priced fayre. Clean toilets which is a rarity.. One concern I have is the step inside the entrance. Yes, it's a old building and this was the design back in the day but while I was dining there was quite a few stumbles down the step. There is a notice (mind the step) on the entrance door in the middle of the Christmas wreath so warning is given although I'd guess emphasis is looking at the wreath.. I can see a nasty fall occurring in the future. I don't have an answer to the problem, I hope someone else does. Nice to see the fire lit, always creates a nice atmosphere especially on a cold December day. Will definitely be returning

Beautifully decorated with blazing log fires and a welcome to match, this pub is probably the best in the area. Great menu at realistic prices and unsurpassed quality and presentation - what’s not to like. We could not fault anything - thanks to all the staff for a wonderful evening.

Cosy and friendly place, but a shame they've stopped doing food.

The food was dreadful and expensive. Can’t say it any plainer. Schnitzel was burnt and poorly presented. Pasted was soggy. The very worst was the waffles which had been microwaved and were solid! Just the two us for a birthday meal with one drink each and it cost £91!
