Have been going to the Miners arms for 20+ years and have never been disappointed with the food always good quality and the staff are very friendly. We both had the steak and mushroom pie today it was very tasty and the vegetables were delicious. Always have a good real ale on hand pump. The pudding's are very nice as well I had the plum crumble and my partner had the Guinness cake that was really good. Always busy need to in advance.

We had tried with some difficult to obtain a table for Sunday lunch, until this week. Well worth the wait. Excellent and friend service, lovely menu, different to the run of mill type of thing you get, this felt genuinely different, and everything we had was delicious. Cant thank you enough and we have already pre booked a couple of dates. Thank you, we are two new regular customers.

Disappointing - beautiful setting and professional service but unfortunately the menu is pretentious and does not deliver on flavour or technical ability, the first time we had s meal here pre-covid it was average but thought we would give them the benefit of doubt but unfortunately it was consistently poor. We had the goats cheese, pear and honey tart which sounded lovely but in reality was ingredients on a puff pastry base made in large batches with inconsistent portions I.e. one portion was all crusty edges and no filling and one middle piece with virtually no pastry served with coleslaw (wierd) which was more like a bowl of cream with a few bits of veg in it. Me in of 'slow cooked pork steak' stuffed with tomatoes which came in a greasy, watery sauce, overcooked and tough which was sent back as it was inedible - we were then told we would be charged 'half' price although we informed them upon trying to cut/taste it! The side of vegetables were boring, bland and unimaginative. Overall the place had the feeling of 'lunch in a care home' where all the customers wouldn't have a clue about gastronomy in general and that the place panders to 'regular' clicky set in their way customers with prime dining spots #tableforone - such a missed opportunity as this place will nose dive if new customers and diversity is not achieved for the next generation #chefwhothinkstheycancook

Service was a little slow but the staff did explain they were short staffed which was absolutely fine. Food - absolutely amazing! Couldn’t fault anything. About 15 of us. Given a Room of our own: well laid-out ...& welcoming... & warm on a very piercingly cold day! My Soup hot & flavoursome. One or 2 of other people's starters a trifle Spartan. Turkey Dinner greatly enhanced by plentiful potatoes & prolific vegetables on separate Platters [ renewable ! ]. I chose a cold Dessert with vanilla ice-cream. Quite sufficient. So a jolly gathering overall!

Was visiting my friend in Kelstedge and we decided to go for lunch. We’re not disappointed. The restaurant is in the outskirts of the village but is well worth th3 journey. Very interesting menu and wine list. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. I had the chicken stuffed with pear and ginger followed by the home baked black currant cheesecake. We had a really nice South African rose with our meal. This was a great find and would not hesitate to recommend it.

We booked our table of 4 for a Saturday evening, and every table was full which is always a good sign of popularity. The food was great, ample portions, piping hot and very tasty. I would say it is pitched above pub food level and has a home cooked theme to all dishes with many choices you would perhaps not see everywhere. This alongside menu staples too on offer. The choices are selected from a blackboard and we found something for everyone. Pleasant and efficient service and reasonably priced. Manchester tart and sherry trifle were amongst some of the dessert offerings and were delicious. Would definitely go back but booking absolutely essential.

There were no menus only a board with hard-to-read handwriting which was shown to each table in turn. This took up so much time that after 90 mins wait we had only had a starter. When the main course eventually arrived, the potatoes had obviously been on the pass for too long and the chips were like cardboard, the beef cheeks in ale was spoilt by a dollop of sour cream on top and contained a lot of tomato skins.

Went for a meal on a Saturday evening after a glowing review from my wife, she’d had lunch there with friends. Menu wasn’t complicated and there was fish, veggie and carnivorous choices to be had. If I don’t find something that is out of the ordinary or that I can’t cook at home I usually go for belly pork. This was the case on this visit, long story short...it wasn’t slow roasted and there was no crackling and I don’t give a chuff if it I locally sourced if it isn’t treated right in the cooking process, especially if the description had me expecting something more. Service was ok but when the plate arrived I was presented with 3 fatty slices of meat in gravy...the gravy was the best part. Where’s the crackling dudes? This place was OK and the veg was fresh and spuds good, decent beer too...it just felt like they had cut my meat up cos I couldn’t do it myself...also the place was blooming cold, plenty of folks in so I sure they can pay the heating bill. Would I go again...no because there isn’t anything else on the menu that I would go for.

Been going to the miners for probably 20 years for a pint after our favorite walk around Ashover and had a good meal there before Xmas. Stopped in today Sunday 7 January to be rudely herded out by barman because of muddy boots. If there was a sign up to take off boots, we gladly would have - tbh they weren't bad anyway. We decided to leave, certainly not welcome. Popped my head round the door to cancel order to overhear barman talking about us in full range of customers - very embarrassing, he then aggressively 'shooed' me out. Ok it's a restaurant not a pub but this was downright rude and not the way staff should behave. What a shame, we'll never go there again.

Wanting an earlier booking for Saturday evening we were told this wasn’t possible as all early reservations were taken and the only booking available was for 8pm as they were staggered. Arriving at 7.30 we were informed our table was ready, why could we not have been booked in earlier when we made the original reservation I wonder? After having a drink at the bar we sat down and waited for the menu, and waited, and waited. After eventually reminding the waiter twice that we existed we were still waiting when a rather frustrated waiter finally arrived with the menu written on a board perched on a chair. Not at all professional, after all, this is the 21st century and the mysteries of computers are now well enough known to have a few menus printed for each table if it is not possible to have a menu board on show. When the meals eventually arrived they were good, very good and served by polite friendly staff. Why “oh not again” because this is virtually a repeat of our previous experience some years ago when we said never again. I do wish the management would explain the system on arrival or modernise

We went as a family of four for what we hoped would be a lovely night out, how wrong we were. Having booked the table for 8pm ( we arrived at 7.55pm) - we were told were our table was and duly sat down. We waited and waited for someone to bring the menu, this took over 45 minutes, when the waitress arrived she actually gave the menu to some customers that had arrived after us. The female owner must have known these people as she came in and stood having a chat with them for around 20 minutes. At this stage my husband intervened and asked if we could possibly order. We didn't bother ordering a starter as by this time our patience was running out. We eventually placed our order for the mains and waited....and waited, another 45 minutes! ( we were losing the will to live by this time) - I must say that when the food did arrive it was well presented and beautifully cooked. We didn't expect to have to wait a hour and a half to get a one course meal. We declined ordering a dessert or coffee, by this time we just wanted to leave. We wont be going back.

No-one in our party of 4 had been to the Miners Arms Inn before and we looking forward to samping its delights, especially as it was a very good friend's (significant) birthday. Were greeted by a rather serious individual who cast his doubtful eye over us and it was clear that he assumed that we had not booked a table (we had). A somewhat confusing conversation ensued about our table, but after giving the name under which the reservation had been made we were pointed to a table 'over there' which was adjacent to the dessert cabinet. We settle in to to our chairs, but we have to go to the bar to order drinks (although they are brought over by our sombre host). We ponder the menu, a large blackboard of daily specials, and make our choices. The game pie caught my attention, which I ordered, but it was really a game stew with a piece of (very good) pastry placed on top. A true top-and-bottom pie it wasn't. That said, the flavours were very rich and, well, gamey. A plate of vegetables and a plate of potatoes arrived for the four of us, which were well cooked and there was a good variety of potatoes (including chips and roasters), but being on an open plate they soon went cold.Four empty plates went back to the kitchen and the overall opinion was that the food was good. We didn't have time for dessert, but we did have coffee. Initially disappointed that it was just filter coffee, but we were offered refills, which I think more restaurants should do.What about prices? I think the prices were reasonable with starters around £4, mains around £12 and desserts £4.25. For 4 mains, 2 colas, G&T, half of lager, 250ml white wine and 175ml red the bill was just shy of £70.00.So, why the 'average' score? Again, I would choose prefer to choose a score somewhere between 'very good' and 'average' (an on-going frustration because neither score is accurate). The food was good, but the service was not particularly friendly. Whilst I don't want to become best friends with those running restaurants whenever I eat out, I do enjoy informal and relaxed friendliness. I don't think that is too much to expect.

A last-minute recommendation brought us to this unassuming but utterly delightful restaurant in rural Derbyshire. Although, as we'd been warned, we had to wait, the service was attentive and the ambience and decor charming and restful. The food – baked haddock and steak and mushroom pie - was excellent and so filling that we had to give up on the idea of the desserts we'd been planning. Will definitely want to come back.

We visited this pub for a drink but didn't have time to stop for food. The pub was welcoming, and whilst there was only one real ale and one real cider on tap the quality of the beer was good. The decor is bright and stylish, and the food looked very good. They do not have a printed menu as such as the menu changes daily based on what is currently fresh and available. Will have to try it out for food next time around.

Booked last minute for a Saturday night, but wish we hadn't bothered. Whilst the decor in the pub is very stylish, there is nothing stylish about the food or service. The food when it finally came was no more than mediocre, but the customer service was the greatest disappointment, as there was none! No one showed us to our table, just got a pointed finger waved at us, there was no drinks order taken, we waited 45 minutes for the illegible menu board to arrive. A really bizarre system of ordering food! After another long wait our starters arrived, or should I say were thrown at us, the plates were still spinning as the waitress re entered the kitchen, and then a further long wait for the main course. At no point did anyone enquire if everything was OK with our meal. Hospitality - I don't think so!!

6 of us went for an evening meal early in December. We waited for an hour for the menus. One of us ordered plaice. When it came it was very small and a second one was offered to compensate. This was served immediately so was cold by the time the first one was eaten. No sauces were offered. Two of us had lamb Wellington which had soggy pastry. Two others had turkey which was 'ordinary'. My complaint about the wait for the menus was met with indifference.

Had lunch with friends, we like the place and have been before. The food is good the place is clean and comfortable. We all had different food and each of us was happy with portion size, price and service. We will call again. It lives up to its favourable reviews.

The Miners catered perfectly (with advance notice) for our family group of 15 which included 2 vegans and two gluten intolerants. We've been going since it opened in the 1980s, starting when my grandparents and great aunties were alive. My parents are now head of the family and my brother & I have 6 children between us, all nearly grown up & with partners of their own. This Christmas is the first time everyone has been in the UK at the same time for 6 years and the food & service was as good as ever. I don't know how they do it, time & again. A fabulous event, thank you to Andrew, family & staff.

I visited the Miners Arms today 8 December 2016 for lunch with friends. I chose the Turkey main course but could not eat it because the turkey meat was obviously not carved from a turkey but catering pack slices which had an unpleasant gristly skin on the underside of the slices which I had to spit out - plus perfectly formed round slices of dark mean also surrounded in fatty skin - so perfectly round they obviously had been cut from a catering roll of meat. I complained to the proprietor who agreed to replace the meal but I couldn't face anything else after the unpleasant turkey meat. I was therefore not charged for the main course. I did have a sweet and coffee which were average. My friends meals were ok, including one of turkey - I must have drawn the short straw when the turkey was served to my plate. I have eaten at this place many timed in the past and the meals have always been ok so very disappointed today. I felt that all in all the whole tone of the place had changed - the proprietor was very pleasant but the service did not seem to be as well organised as in the past.

On a fine winter's day beautiful Derbyshire takes a lot of beating.(You will need sat-Nav to find it!). Once found, the Miners Arms within it was a bonus. This venue has been lovingly , with care, investment and taste, converted from a traditional pub into restaurant you should visit. Artistic and creative creations of English food , including creative sweets was for four of us a delight.Friendly staff who seem to have developed with the restaurant's reputation help things along. Again though, and this is my permanent Achilles Heel, I still find the wine pricing unnecessarily high.in non- gourmet restaurants out in the sticks. A word for the management. Nice menu presentation idea, but standard chalk printing in normal script would make it easier to read. Thank you.

My very good friends and close family have been coming to the Miners Arms for many years and consider it a real treat when we go.A few days before we were due to go I rang them to let them know that I I'm gluten intolerant, I did this because on a previous visit I had something on the menu I probably wouldn't normally have eaten. When we arrived we got the usual warm welcome as did everyone else who arrived for their meals( we were sitting by the door where you are greeted, so I know). When I informed them that I had rung previously regarding a gluten free meal, they were ready with the iconic blackboard on which they had starred all the gluten free options.I found this very helpful and there was plenty of choice. To my delight I was informed that they had made me a special desert!!! Which was amazing( thank you Miners Arms)If you are visiting Derbyshire you need to go to this fabulous pub but make sure you book first. Thanks Miners Arms staff, I am a very full, happy person

I notice that there have some negative reviews on Trip Advisor about this place recently so thought it appropriate to give my view. I cannot comment on other people's experiences and am sure they have been given in good faith. However, I can say that in 30 years of coming here, with the same proprietor in charge, it's always been great, and based on my experience last summer still was. That's why it doesn't have a website (it's booked full most evenings without one!). That's why it only needs to open four days a week (it doesn't need to open Mon., Tue. Wed.!). That's why it doesn't need to respond to online reviews (it doesn't have to!). At this stage I should say that I am nothing to do with the Miner's Arms and in fact live around the other side of the world, visiting Derbyshire a few times a year to stay with my parents. However, whenever I have gone to the Miner's Arms, it has been exactly the same for over half my life: simple, good starters and main courses; innovative, if somewhat illegible chalkboard menu; competent if not overly-personal staff, and amazingly wonderful, home-made desserts in the to-offending-some-guests refrigerated display. My last visit was in Aug. 2016 when everything was as we expected and as described above. No complaints. If you like it go. If you don't want this kind of place then there are plenty of alternatives around in this part of Derbyshire. But for those who like it, it's predictable, innovative and reliable.

I was taken here as a guest of a family member on 23rd September 19:00. This was a pub I frequented in my youth, which in the '60s was packed with beer drinkers; the outside I recognised, inside, while very well furnished with oak, was on the sterile side and the dessert chiller cabinet in the dining room was a touch incongruous. At the bar the greeting was far from hale and hearty - the main draft beer was not available (it was not ready to be pulled was the grudging explanation) which suggests poor cellar management for a Friday evening full-house.The menu presentation is verging on the bizarre: a barely decipherable chalk board propped on a chair, of which there appeared to be only one to share among all customers. A simple paper printed menu would save time for all - no website; perhaps no PCs/printer?The peach and goats' cheese was tasty however it was excessively hot to eat immediately, it was also presented poorly. The steak and mushroom pie was good; perhaps a little more gravy for the pie crust? Boiled, roast and chipped potatoes as well as pie crust was a carbohydrate excess. The vegetable plate was a confused mixture attempting to please all but in the end none; the broccoli was barely cooked. Vanilla and chocolate dessert was too large for one (shared). Why ice cream was offered with this mousse-type dish mystifies. In all: a lack of finesse; perhaps quantity over quality draws the regular clientele? The Argentine Malbec was excellent. The young, restaurant waiting staff were very good, pleasant, courteous and amiable.Unlikely to try a further trip down memory lane.

Friends took us here for dinner having tried it out a couple of times themselves. The food is good but I seem to recall there were only 2 beers on offer although a good choice of wines. Nice location out in the countryside and plenty of parking. You need to book ahead to make sure you get a table.

The meal was not worth the long wait it took for us to receive. The meat was far to uniformed in cut to have been freshly roasted and was quite tasteless. We had to ask for more roast potatoes which were bland and under cooked. The green vegetables that were served were at least hot, but again bland. Overall our visit to the Miners Arms, was not a pleasant experience and one that we will not be repeating

Dinner was booked for 1.30pm on a Friday, the earliest table that was available. It was full with only two spare tables (One was ours).Excellent drinks choice from the bar area and a varied meal selection, all on a blackboard bought to your table for you to peruse before ordering. Only one starter was not available but the alternative was explained. Many of the main course appeared to be about the £10/£11 mark so not overly expensive, all served with a selection of vegetables and potatoes (boiled, roast and chips). It was certainly good quality food and today was definitely pie weather, so steak and mushroom it was.Similarly a different blackboard to select your sweet from and again a good selection. Very polite and friendly staff. No doubt if the weather had been kinder a visit to the nearby Ogston reservoir, before or after the meal, would have been in order. All told a lovely afternoon with friends and we left the staff setting up for what would no doubt be a busy evening

We had often driven by this pub on the way to Ashover and it always looked busy. So we looked on the web to find their web site for a menu. It turns out they don't have a web site. I phoned to ask if they do Sunday lunch and is there a roast? Yes, beef is one of them. They offered to reserve us a table, but I said we'd drop in on the off chance and eat outside as we have a dog.On arrival we sat at an outside table and ordered drinks. There was a menu board, but no prices on it. The staff were busy but had time for us and were charming. It was about 1.30pm Since we hadn't booked, the manager checked the food was available on the board before confirming we could eat. The menu board had starters, main course and dessert items. It turned out the price was £14.95 main course, £16.95 for 2 courses and £18.95 for 3 courses. We all decided to have roast beef which we felt should be a signature dish at Sunday lunch, albeit a little more than other local pubs charge. It arrived in a respectable 10-15 minutes and was well presented. Vegetables were on the side, but there were not many for 3 of us. We asked for more broccoli and this was brought without further charge. The Yorkshire pudding was very good. The disappointment was the beef. It seemed machine sliced a bit thinly rather than hand carved. Whilst it was acceptable and there was enough slices, we all agreed it was average and at £14.95 fell a little short of expectations. We were hoping for hand carved juicy tender Derbyshire beef as served by other local pubs.If we'd had three courses, I think we would have had better value for money and maybe we would have tried other menu items. The pub is lovely and there's a good atmosphere with friendly staff, but I don't feel we'll be coming again for Sunday lunch. We might try it again sometime. It looks like they have plenty of loyal fans, but they need to get a web site with their menu on it.

We visited on November 1st, 2024, and sadly, it was quite a disappointment. While the bar staff did their best, the kitchen service was very underwhelming. By 6:30 PM, they had already run out of the special main menu on the board! The food took a long time to arrive, and when it finally did, it was subpar. The steak & ale pie was more air than a hot air balloon and hardly had any meat. The crust was burnt and tasted like a heated-up frozen pie. The chips were clearly shop-bought oven chips. This was not the level of service we had experienced before. We left feeling quite disappointed. It seems the place is being sold, and I hope the new owners can bring back some quality!

Lovely landlady & landlord. So friendly and welcoming. We had halloumi kebab and steak which were both cooked to perfection. Has glass jars on the bar filled with phone chargers and plugs incase you’ve forgotten yours and also a jar full of reading glasses just incase you need to borrow a pair! How thoughtful! And the best part is they are very dog friendly. Dog treat station at the end of the bar. See you again soon!

Good pub with onsite brewery and a plentiful selection of local beers/ales as well as wines/spirits etc. Friendly staff and atmosphere.
