Misunderstanding with the menu and one of the young members of staff: Emailed the manager to raise the issue. Sam didn’t handle the feedback particularly well. Unapologetic and defensive.

Went for our 25th wedding anniversary meal, the fish came out burnt to a crisp , peas were cold and chips were dry , when asked if food was ok , we said it was overcooked and all we got was "sorry about that" and the staff member walked away. I then went and said how awful it was and he agreed and took it back to the kitchen , not even offering me an alternative. When I booked online it asked for a special occasion and they would try to make it extra special ! The food should not have been allowed out of the kitchen. I didn't pay for the fish and chips as I couldn't eat it , but we had no discount on the bill as way of an apology, I just went away hungry and very disappointed.

The Mill is a beautiful place. The surroundings are stunning even on a grey day. (Would have loved to have seen it in the summer) Loads of comfortable seating inside and out. The staff are very pleasant and friendly (Jake and Paige, thank you both) and Sam and Rachel are fantastic hosts. Made us feel really welcome.

Haven’t visited for a while as previously had a bad experience, but on a lovely summers evening we braved it again, and we weren’t disappointed. Good service and lovely food whilst sat on the deck. Unfortunately the bread (focaccia) was cold - a little char to warm it and crisp it would’ve been lovely but nothing too major. Thanks!

Mill at rode used to be my favourite place to visit in the area. Over the last 20 years it’s changed hands a lot (now I sound old) so haven’t been here much. Love the location so thought I’d give it another shot. Had Fish and chips and a couple pints outside. Food n drinks were 10/10. Please visit. Young lad that served me food and looked after my table is the main reason I’m writing a review…. Young lad, dark hair, very good energy. Please give him a pay rise, he’s an asset to your business. Come visit! 👍

I visited tonight for me and my husbands wedding anniversary, we were really excited for the meal and we had booked the table months prior and we let the restaurant know it was a special occasion. The restaurant is very unique and we loved the decor, the food was also amazing. The issue we had was with service, we were a little bit disappointed that they didn't acknowledge that it was a special occasion but that's no big deal, the main issue for us is that they seemed to be very understaffed. Our stater wasn't cleaned away until our main came out, we then needed new cutlery but that wasn't changed so we used the dirty ones. We noticed other tables who arrived after us were getting served before us. When it came to get the bill we ended up just going up to the bar as we were waiting for a long time for the card machine. I think the main issue is they needed an extra staff member, the staff were lovely but they seemed overworked.

Worse than average. Greasy cod and chips. The cod was as thin as a pancake, more tartare sauce than peas. The steak was tiny and extremely chewy. The setting is lovely but it doesn’t make up for the awful food. Nice chips though.

At bit disappointing, but would give it a second chance. Lovely venue, riverside with a large mill with lots of history. It was here that Royal Blue cloth was invented! Good carparking, far enough away not to bother the two large outdoor terraces. They do need sweeping after our recent bad weather. Great 1 hour walk along the river just opposite. Large bar and restaurant, games room in cellar and function room for hire and weddings. Good beer selection including 0%draft IPA. Staff friendly and helpful. Menu seems good, but no salads to mention. Monday to Thursday has £19.95 deal of main and drink, but not 0% or soft drinks. Meaning you must pay the £18 normal costs plus drink. Please can you change it? The food was ok but not great. Grid iron chicken was tough, risotto was cold and tasted bland. The chips were excellent! Which is a plus. It may have been a bad day. For the location, the building and staff I would go back for a drink but maybe not a family meal.

We popped in on the way to Bath from Frome for some lunch at this lovely riverside pub. A rare sunny day made it even more enjoyable, sitting on the deck by the river . The food was delicious , hot and served in good time. The service superb. We were looked after by Ella who had that excellent balance of really friendly, whilst also efficient and professional. Popped in over the weekend, had been there before and the service was shocking, decided to give it another go and I never though that I would say this but the service was worse....., such a shambles, enough staff about for the amount of people but so un-organised , after waiting some time to be served, one person took my order, the next person served me 1 of my drinks then disappeared, waited some time for 2nd drink (ordered at same time) was given a mixer for the drink that was wrong so asked for the right one... complete disaster, go further down the road to The Cross Keys, where the service was excellent and the food delicious.

Popped in for a lunch, never been before so had an open mind. Beautiful surroundings and lovely inside. We sat near the river. Ordered a light lunch and a lamb burger and asked how long the wait would be as there was a party upstairs. Waitress (lovely helpful smiley girl) said half hour or so. We sat outside with our drinks watching the river and people. Food came about 20 mins later! Brilliant. Husband not a fan of lamb but really enjoyed the different tastes within the burger. My light fish roll was good too, chips on the side perfect. All in all, we were pleased with our food, the service, wait time, surroundings etc.

We haven’t ever experienced such a dreadful Sunday Lunch!!!! We ordered some breads, dips & drinks then main courses. The drinks arrived but no breads. The main courses came & still no breads etc. The roast beef was served on top of the potatoes & vegetable's. This we found not pleasing to the eye but that is the chef’s idea of presentation. However the Roast Potatoes were honeycombed ( overcooked ) dry & tasted like last weeks warmed up. All the vegetables were not fresh, parsnips dried up, sweet potatoes mashed & watery. Broccoli was served in a bowl of melted cheese not edible. No concern for any allergies. When we were asked was everything ok & we answered not really explaining why we were assured the potatoes & veg were all cooked fresh that morning. If that were true they need to replace their chef. We found this a disappointing experience as the venue was beautiful but…. considering it was 1 30 pm on Sunday & almost empty perhaps that said something. A member of our party had fish & chips which was just ok. More batter than any fish & frozen peas crushed to resemble mushy!!! We were exempted from the service charge ?….. We would have preferred to have had a good meal & exceptional service, we did not ask for a reduction & were informed that they appreciate feedback So….hopefully the place will take this onboard.

Nice pub and location. Very cheeky service charge/tax added to the meal. Two meals of fish & chips and a side of chips on the menu at £17.50 each plus £4 for the chips, simple maths £39 final bill £46.65? Right at the bottom of the menu in small writing it says 'discretionary' fee of 10% added to meal. If its 'discretionary' let the punter decide if they wish to tip. The food was average at best and we won't be visiting again and would urge anyone visiting be careful of sneaky charges! Rip off

We visited to celebrate my daughters 21st birthday on a Friday night. First impressions were good, a lovely table and a nice choice of food on the menu. The white wine, (Picpoul approx £34) was warm, around room temperature on a warm evening. I asked for an ice bucket but was given an empty metal bucket from a freezer: cool enough to keep a cold bottle cold but not to chill. We requested ice cubes and managed to chill a little. Bring a celebration I didn’t want to make a fuss. When the starters arrived one was missing and then came when most of us had finished ours. The mains arrived with at least 5-10 mins delay between them. The food was good, no complaints there. At the end of the meal, as there were so few staff around I quietly informed the barman of all our concerns. He said sorry, but there was no real apology or anyone from management to speak to. I sent this information directly to the Mill to avoid leaving a negative review a week ago but they haven’t bothered to reply. A VERY disappointing evening.

Lovely location, reflected in the prices. Service was very pleasant and added to the bill without having to be asked. Burger and chips was just that - burger and chips, the sauerkraut and other veg listed on the menu are toppings for the burger, not sides. If you like to pay for the location and are always forgetting to add service charge or tips to the bill then this is the pub for you. Ps, I wonder whether the burger was made on site? I'd have hoped so given the cost.

First time here, lovely looking pub, staff friendly and food really good but unfortunately the whole Sunday dining experience on a lovely day was totally spoilt by a young football team of kids constantly running through the dining area shouting and screaming with football boots on whilst parents sat in the sun drinking absolutely oblivious to the whole situation, we did ask them to slow down as they could have knocked into staff members carrying hot food and drinks, we did think perhaps the Landlord may have had a quite word as we were not the only ones to complain, this has put us off returning here again, I know children like to run and play but it was a lovely day and they have large garden areas this could happen rather than 11 boys running through the whole pub !

Shown to a table close by so asked for one further from the house around the drinkers at the bar. Shown to a table nor set up but told it would be shortly. We were left with a menu with Limited options. No one ever returned so after waiting in vain around 10 minutes for our order to be taken and the table set up with cutlery, glasses etc. we left. Had hoped it had improved having tried it before but NO. Will not be returning again, there are far better places to eat with far better service and better menu selections.

Lunch with friends. Disappointing number of options on the menu, so not much to choose from. I picked the Chicken Parmesan with pesto on Ciabatta bread, which was pretty tasteless to be honest. Sticky toffee pudding for dessert was really dry, not much caramel sauce. My wife had fish and chips and enjoyed it, but could have done with a few more chips. Not cheap at over £65 for the two of us, including 2 soft drinks. It was ok, but Won't be in a hurry to go back.

Our friends said the Mill in Rode had a very good menu and very good food. Unfortunately , the menu had changed , the presentation was poor. When asked had they changed chefs , there was no answer except that the menu had changed recently . Portions were small , Sea Bass turned out to be sea bream ( at least that’s what I think the waitress said but it certainly wasn’t sea bass ) and a piece 5 inches by 2 1/2 inches a whole half side barely half an inch thick . The veggie burger came in a bun with a bit of lettuce in it on a plate with a dozen chips in a metal cup just plonked on the plate as if it had come from MacDonalds been unwrapped at plated . Bill for four with wine was £174 . The food represented over half and was probably worth half of that .

They were so welcoming despite being so busy, very personable and thoughtful. The food was simply amazing. The roasts were incredibly generous and the meat was so tender. We were attending the mill @rode for Mother’s Day 10/03/2024. We took my granny who is 91 years of age who has limited strength and struggles to walk. When apon arrives we waited for about 5-10 minutes half in half out the door while waited to be seen by a Member of staff. She then said that she had placed us up stairs in the function room. We had told her that my granny couldn’t go up the stairs and we need something on one level. She replied with “ we are over book fully booked and that they have placed us upstairs and an overflow seating. She managed to source us a table on the same leval as the entrance. We waited a while for our drinks as they very over booked and over runned. We then waited a while before ordering our food. We waited over and hour . But don’t have anything bad to say about the food it was very nice good sizes. After about 1 hour we were told that the next table is waiting and that we need to leave. We asked if we could have coffee she explained that we can sit outside and drink them but had to move from the table. Our next table was standing right behind us watching over us and we all felt very intimidating. When looking around that was so many tables that had been here longer then us but we had to move. Overall good food, the staff were friendly but very over priced. would be a while before going back.

This is a nice pub in a very nice position. The menu was dominated by fish dishes (more than half). Which is strange given the supplier of the week is a butcher; there was a single meat dish, a Rib Eye steak. I had the fish pie which had potatoes as a large ingredient, and it was served with mashed potatoes, a bit of carb overload. The dish came with 'seasonal vegetables' but it seems the only vegetable in season now is kale, which was disappointing. The toilets were very good.

As we were guests it wasn’t our choice, unfortunately if you’re not a fish eater the menu is very limited. There were seven of us in our party three who ordered starters, thats when the waiting began, drinks orders were taken earlier in part then again to finish the round. We should have had an inkling! After some thirty odd minutes the mains arrived! Where are the starters? The waitress disappeared for some time and returned with one of the starters that we had asked her to cancel. Food was ok although the veggie burger got left. If you’re a dessert person this is also not the place for you. Decor and surroundings were lovely but food choice and service disappointing. A dinner to forget. We dine at this restaurant on a January night; food was ok, although overpriced for the very small portions served. On the way out, after having paid with cards, we have been stopped by who we believe was the manager, asking us very loudly to stop as our payment "did not go through". As you can imagine, we spent 10 extremely embarrassing minutes that felt like an eternity, as everyone in the restaurant looked at us... We then decided to log on on our bank accounts via mobile to show that all the money had been taken... The manager did not immediately acknowledged this fact, frenetically keeping on checking his card terminal... After further few minutes, once again very very loudly, he acknowledged the payment claiming that the reason of such "pantomime" was due to the handheld device not syncing with the base... We were speechless for the lack of tact and poor customer service, so we left without saying anything... Awful manners, awful experience. Personally, I would encourage this establishment to learn some manners and customer care.

We were informed the chicken was thighs which wasn't stated on the menu and for the price for it was a lot for the cut of meat (Thighs). We got told to wait (30 min wait)for the owner to try convince us the burger was ok, owner wasn't prepared to budge on the matter nor offer anything, it was us who insisted we are not paying the service charge and not pay the sent back the undercooked food. Atmosphere was non existent. Overall pricey for what you get. Tip - ask to sit where you have light.

We visited this establishment for my Grandson’s 21st Birthday meal. As we have visited The Mill in the past we decided to go there. The service was slow or non-existent at times. The Barman had to keep taking advice on questions we’d asked him. We ordered our meals (limited menu). Long story short it was very expensive and the two chicken burgers ordered were raw in places and were only warm but after mentioning it to the so called Duty Manager she got very defensive and said they had been soaked in butter milk , sprinkled with paprika and temperature probed before they were served then stormed off with my meal. We were offered alternative meals but wasn’t prepared to wait. We were told that they would call the Owner, a Sam Knight and he turned up eventually after a wait and he wouldn’t have it that the chicken was raw in places and after a very long discussion with him and bearing in mind the customer is always right he reluctantly agreed to deduct the two meals and gratuity from the bill and no attempt was made to compensate for ruining what should have been a special family meal for which one family travelled from London. This was mentioned to Mr Knight but he wasn’t interested as looking on this site it’s happened before. To recap the staff apart from one waitress who took our payment were unprofessional and stroppy. I hope this review will be viewed by others before they book!

The lunchtime food was a notch above. Large space made to feel pretty cosy - just what you need on a dreich winter's day. Like most venues, acoustics were poor, especially the galumphing stomping from function room on floor above our table. Likely gorgeous grounds in summer: old mill run, decking, greenery, tucked away from any hint of traffic. Chosen for its halfway location between Frome and Bradford-on-Avon, my compadres all agreed: all roams should lead to the Mill at Rode.

Wanted a cosy, festive place to lunch and The Mill certainly delivered. Plenty of tables but still felt intimate and ever so friendly front of house staff, was even shown around the premises. I chose the pumpkin meal and I can truly say it was the best salad I have ever eaten...melt in the mouth, crispy cavolo nero, who knew, but absolutely exquisite!

Outstanding Christmas dinner for our work party last night! Superb staff, super helpful, the loom room looked so festive and beautiful but the food was the best bit! Really really delicious Christmas dinner and salted caramel tart to die for! The private dining area was perfect for so many people and we had the best time!

What a gem of a place. I hadn’t been here for years so I thought I’d come for lunch with my wife and our dog. The atmosphere was fantastic : friendly and welcoming - whoever trains and selects the staff clearly know what to look for in excellent front of house skills. The food was also exceptional and we will most definitely be coming back in January (with our unopened golden ticket!). Thank you to everyone for putting on such a wonderful Sunday Lunch.

The xmas decor and ambience of this pub is excellent and promised to be a good evening. We eagerly awaited our meal choices from the Xmas Party Menu, many of us chose the Ballotine of bronze turkey, which most of us agreed looked and tasted amazing, however we all agreed we were disappointed with the portion size and the lack of vegetables. We assumed small side dishes of Carrots and Sprouts were going to be added to our tables, but when we enquired we were informed that what was on our plate was everything: 2 slices of turkey, 1 pig in blanket, a small square roast potato and one medium size roast parsnip, with a drizzle of juniper jus. My party and I were left feeling some what underwhelmed, however tasty it was. Overall, it was very tasty, but over priced for the portion size and lack of additional vegetables .

Food was OK although too expensive. We were there for Sunday lunch and chose the chicken and beef, selection of vegetables was good but one very thin slice of beef and a chicken drumstick was stingy. Desert was very nice, we would probably go back although price might put us off.

Unfortunately despite the food looking and tasting lovely the portions were very disappointing for a roast dinner, 85% was vegetable with a small piece of chicken and thin slice of beef.

Nice Sunday roast, went for the Mill Roast which is a combo of both meats. I would say expensive for £22 for a small portion of chicken and one small piece of beef. The veges were nice, I like mine al dente but the greens were very under. I'm glad we tried but I think for value, quantity and quality there are many others that offer something a little better in the area.

This location has been through a lot of changes but the current owners are on the right track and making gradual changes - meal was great, few minor issues with colleagues but these were rectified straight away with explanations around what they are trying to do - no where is perfect, its how you deal with any issues that matter so full marks and will def be returing

Fabulous host who is an excellent chef in a great location to explore east Somerset. The building itself is approximately 500 years old, has many stories to "tell" and beautifully restored.

Popped in for some pints at the recommendation of our Inn Keeper. A real old world traditional English pub. The ambiance was cozy with the dark woods and old fire place. Unfortunately the bar keep was quite young and didn’t really know much about what she was pouring.
