Booked afternoon tea here for myself and over 20 guests for my milestone birthday having read a review that rated this venue as providing a good experience, however, I did not receive the same treatment which ruined my birthday event. Waitress Olivia advised that my entire birthday party was only allowed the vegetarian option of food (sandwiches) even though I myself am not vegetarian and neither were all my friends/family/guests. This vegetarian option turned out to be very basic consisting of a few stale sandwiches and fairy cakes. When these sandwiches arrived, there was no finesse or presentation - the whole thing was very slap dash – looked rushed. In addition to which the teas and coffees were brought out a good 15 minutes prior to the arrival of the stale sandwiches so all hot drinks were cold by the time the basic vegetarian option on sandwiches arrived. There was no pastries. This was the worst afternoon tea I have ever experienced, I felt totally humiliated in front of my guests and it totally ruined my birthday event. But hey ho, I was advised there was a wedding reception taking place at the same time and the kitchen were busy with the wedding parties' event which the hotel clearly prioritised over my birthday party, and this showed in volumes! I most certainly would never recommend.

I was given an afternoon tea voucher some time ago and finally got around to using it. It is served in the lounge by the charming Max. There was one table set with a table cloth and some very old world china and it brought a smile to my face - yes it was indeed our table. The food was plentiful on the afternoon tea and it was just a nice experience - the scones in particular were so good - I'd love to see the hotel getting more of this type of trade. The one thing I would say it would be great if there was a card on the table with sparkling wine options to add on as that might have been nice too and an opportunity for the hotel to upsell!

Just been for afternoon tea and quite disappointed. Everything had been in the fridge for quite a time making the sandwich fingers cold and the pastry on the small tart soft. The sandwiches were very plain ham, tuna, and cheese no garnish or anything. Certainly would not recommend or be giung back..

Stayed at the hotel on Shrive Tuesday and being away from home I really fancied pancakes. I was surprised that the hotel was not featuring anything related to pancakes on their menu today. I shared my disappointment with Phillip the very friendly and amenable bar tender and he immediately said he will see what he could do for me. He spoke to the chef and within 10 minutes I had freshly prepared pancakes served with lemon and sugar. They were delicious! Thank you Phillip for going out of your way and making a customer very happy and satisfied. Excellent customer service! ;-)

We often go to eat in The Midland and it is a refreshing taste of old Bradford ......still maintaining an olde world ambience but with a modern take on food . If you are happy and need to celebrate or if melancholy and need to take gentle respite then this is the place to be . A special mention to Phillipe who works in the bar and Restaurant ....he is the perfect accompaniment, handsome , witty and knowing exactly when to bring coffee when required and make a meal here just perfect . Whether the bar is busy or not , Phillips runs it like a tight ship and maintains a happy , calm atmosphere . Best meal experience for miles around . Also thanks to Chef for best home made chips ever !!!!

I’ve actually been a bit worried about writing this review because one person we dealt with was so aggressive. No idea who he was. We booked a Groupon deal for 10 people for afternoon tea. Upon arrival we were told our ‘table’ or bunch of tables grouped together (with a sofa and a few low seats) was ours in the lobby area. We asked to be moved. To note it’s because we were a group of 10. We thought we would be a bit loud as it was a celebration. We were told there was a wedding. We were right in the middle of the lobby. We were not allowed due to low staff to sit in their restaurant. They basically had one member of staff to do all the bar and all the serving for afternoon tea. On a side note she was lovely. Now we as a group have done afternoon tea in places like the Ritz, Claridges etc but we’ve also had some lovely lovely afternoon teas in places that charge similar prices to the Midland. In all fairness we weren’t expecting much from the afternoon tea. Sandwiches and scones were large but pleasant. Cakes probably too sweet. But it was fine for the price. Notwithstanding all that what concerned me the most was the way we were given options of where to sit and these were withdrawn. Actually to cut to the chase the deputy manager we think basically as a mistake offered us the mezzanine. There was a wedding so we couldn’t have it - we were happy to have it in the bar. That’s all she had to tell us. We already knew we couldn’t have tea in the restaurant as they were low on staff - hence the tea was set up in the lobby. Instead of her just telling her she made a mistake she brought this man with her to talk to us - like a back up. He had an unpleasant and aggressive - actually cocky manner - it’s like he was ready to shout us down should we push back or say we were unhappy . It’s like he was he security guard or something and ready for a fight with a bunch of ladies who had just wanted a pleasant afternoon tea (not in the lobby surrounded by the general public and didn’t want to be in the main walk way - with the Hotel door /lift all very close to us). Anyway there was no need to speak to us like that or bring the ‘heavy’ to deal with us. Just made us all feel really uncomfortable. Which is a shame as we’ve had a family wedding at the Midland and really enjoyed it. We won’t be back. (PS everyone else who came for afternoon tea got lovely bone china we didn’t - just plain white coffee cups). Very understaffed and poorly trained senior management (or whoever the aggressive man was).

I stayed in the hotel for a week and mostly ate in the hotel restaurant. I never had desserts, so I can't comment on those. The sirloin steak was served with baked tomato, fried mushroom (just one, but it was big) and fried potato (chips like). The tomato was overcooked, the mushroom was undercooked. The chips were quite good. The steak was poorly cut, overcooked (I asked for medium and got "very well done"). Parts of the steak was impossible to chew. After me "re-cutting" the steak, more than a third of it was left on my plate as uneatable. I had the house wine with my meal. I complained that it had "peaked", but the waiter responded that it was "just the house wine", it was like that. In my opinion it was undrinkable, and after the tasting, I never drank the rest. I had expected some action from the waiter, but got none. The restaurant is however not as bad as the one meal. I put down the bad sirloin steak to the chef having a bad day. That can happen. I had other meals there on other days, and they were of a much higher standard. I never attempted the house wine again though. I don't want to come across as overly negative, as my bad experiences were all attributed to one bad meal (and wine) and I did have good food there other days. The restaurant should however instruct the waiters on how to properly react to guests that complain over food or wine.

I was expecting great things as came here about 10 years ago. What a let down!!! We paid £35 per head for luke warm soup that still had the celery strings in it so had not been passed through a sieve to remove any course particles. You got a hot plate before main was served ( probably because the meat was again only luke warm). The Turkey was served as a solid half inch thick slab rather than slices and it was obvious that the waitressing staff had been brought in at short notice as they were not silver service trained. The dessert was also a big let down. On the whole, the food was cold and tasteless and the service mediocre at best. There was little atmosphere and olive felt cheated out of a decent meal. For £35 I would gave expected much more and felt my money would have been much better spent at a Toby carvery, where you could have had much better food service and atmosphere for around a tenner. TOTAL RIP OFF!!!!

We were not sure how welcome we would be at 10am just wanting coffee but were given a very warm welcome by the friendly staff moving chairs and tables to accommodate us. Plenty of coffee and a guided tour of the ballrooms. It's a stunning place and we were very impressed. Service was acceptable although the staff seemed inexperienced. There were only 3 other people in the restaurant during my visit and although the plaster and decoration is beautiful it did feel a little bit like a morgue. If the restaurant had been busier it might have felt more friendly but would the staff have coped? I would definitely recommend you give this place a try for yourself.

Visited on a Thursday afternoon for sparkling afternoon tea. Good welcome when we got there. Had to find a seat in the corner as there was nowhere else to sit. Waited 30 minutes for the afternoon tea despite booking. Selection of 3 small finger sandwiches each and a scone with cream, butter and jam along with 3 cakes. All the food was delicious. Enough tea for 2 cups each but no extra water to refill the teapot. Finished off with a glass of wine. The afternoon was ruined only by the continual loud moaning of another patron having the afternoon tea. She was of the opinion that she should have had more sandwiches, possibly some soup and quiche! Obviously not aware of what afternoon tea consists of. The staff did all they could to placate her and all her party were given free drinks etc and apologies. We decided on the latter - a starter and a main course each. This was prepared freshly and the food was delicious and the portion sizes were sensible. The staff were busy, but this meant that we felt just little forgotten. For example we had to ask for a wine menu, and then for a jug of water, and then again for some bread. Starters were just OK. The problems started with the main courses. I'm lactose intolerant, so ordered tomato and pumpkin tart, the only dish on the menu that was marked as containing "no milk". It arrived covered in melted cheese and surrounded by mozzarella balls! I sent it back, and it eventually came back without the cheese, but was so boring I only managed to eat half.Even so, I got off lightly compared to my companion, whose pork wasn't properly cooked. He sent it back, and they did something to it, but clearly not enough, because he was up half the night with an upset stomach. At these prices you expect A LOT better. The waiters were so sweet and apologetic we ended up feeling sorry for them. But I won't be in a hurry to eat here again.
