Slow service. Rotten beer that the staff wouldn't change. Maybe the lines weren't cleaned or the beer was off. Undrinkable. Wine was good though. Won't be back.

Without a doubt, the best bar in Ilkley and around for service, selection of beer/wine, boards of charcuterie, grilled cheese sandwiches etc. Love the Spanish Stew too. Potentially the best coffee in town too, but maybe that’s Stazzione’s crown. I’ve read reviews complaining about prices but you get what you pay for here and it’s worth every penny. Greggs are in town if you like cheap.

Great vibes, lovely staff, good service and nice food! The stew in particular is super tasty - my only wish would be for alternative to lentils (as not everyone reacts well to lentils). A bean version of the stew perhaps? We really enjoy our visits to Friends of Ham, especially for the live music, when we are able to get tickets.

This place used to offer some really good food at a decent price. However it is now nearly ten pounds for one slice of toast with some nduja on it. Lunch with one of my sons. I have been on several occasions in the past few years and I do like the food - decent meats and quality bread on offer. However , I suspect I may not be alone in thinking that it is overpriced for what you get. I may just be uncommonly greedy and have an appetite for greens , salad & good bread , but it seems the norm with most eateries to offer little extras at excessively high prices. I had a dish of simple sliced potato with swiss raclette cheese with the addition of the recommended serrano ham. The dish was about 16cm diameter and only 2cm deep. Just my opinion - but I would have liked a small pot of good coleslaw with it and a piece of good french bread perhaps , ( included in the price ). Regular visitors to the place will be attracted by the range of beers primarily I imagine , and the facility to be able to sit outside / front and back ; not an appealing idea for me unless the temperature is 24 degrees + and the seats are a wee bit more sophisticated than the ones I remember from primary school ! There is background music but it is mercifully simple and ( inoffensive to my taste ), blues type tunes. The rustic bare wood fittings interior is rather gloomy - perhaps that's why many customers are willing to sit outside but judging by the mature cobwebs at the top of the curtains , the interior is overdue a clean & refurb. Also be aware that , depending on where you sit , you will emerge with clothes + hair smelling slightly of hot cheese as the food prep are is adjacent to the bar.

Cheerful staff welcomed us into the half full restaurant and promptly took our order - but it was then v nearly an hour before the food arrived - missing one persons meal. They were delicious toasted sandwiches- but no explanation for how it could have taken so long. They then ‘rushed’ through the missing food - but still another 15 minutes. The young staff were perhaps doing their best so I didn’t have the heart to remove the 10% service charge! Sorry FOH - no idea why it was going wrong but you need to do better than this!

We googled the best place to get a toastie style sandwich after a walk nearby and found Friends of Ham. The vibe in this place is very trendy. The food was really tasty but the only downside was the wait time, we seemed to wait quit a long time for 2 toasted sandwiches, there wasn't anyone else there at the time, but they were worth the wait. Toasted sourdough with a great selection of fillings, can't wait to go back and try the beef! It would be lovely to sit outside when the suns out as the two seating areas look lovely.

It was 16.35 on Thursday and we wanted a snack and a drink before going to a concert. Friends of Ham is a couple of minutes away from Kings Hall, so very handy. There were only 2 people sat outside and nobody inside so no problem getting a table. Extensive drinks menu and a modest food menu – our drinks were fine. The food however was something else!!! We ordered 4 Grilled Sourdough Sandwiches. 3 of them were Beef Rollers - Cured beef, garlic & herb roasted mushrooms, cheddar, shallots and horseradish cream at £10 each. The 4th was a Classic Grilled Cheese - a blend of cheddar and mozzarella at £7 with added Yorkshire Ham at a further £1.50. To compliment the order we added 2 portions of Domino Potatoes at £5 each. Food bill total £48.50. The toasted Sourdough bread was rock hard, the cured beef was conspicuous by it’s near absence – it was a struggle to see it let alone taste it, likewise with the cheese. There also seemed to have been a mushroom shortage, the quantity allocated to each “Roller” would suggest that only one mushroom had been used between all three “Rollers”. There was absolutely nothing Classic about the Grilled Cheese offering, other than the near absence of “cheese”!! Moving on to the Domino Potatoes – to say £10 was “over the top” for what looked like “a single potato, sliced, partly boiled and garnished with a couple of bay leaves then spread over a couple of small dishes” would be an understatement. In summary the overpriced, poor quality, rock hard, bland, lacking in contents sandwiches rank as some of the worst food offerings we’ve experienced in a long long time!!! Regarding staff. On entry we were warmly greeted by the male bar tender, and our drinks were efficiently and cheerfully dispensed. There were also a couple of “totally disinterested” young female staff on the premises - they delivered our “food” to our table. Yes, they delivered it. Their enthusiasm could not be described as “service”. We were not impressed. We drank our drinks, we each tried our best to eat the sandwiches – with varying degrees of success. Then we left. The “rock hard” quality of the sandwiches was mentioned to the young man at the deli counter as we departed. We saw no benefit in mentioning the poor food quality to the disinterested “delivery” staff. The friendly bar tender was not present as we left. I cannot imagine any circumstances that would get me to return to Friends of Ham, Ilkley.

Looked for somewhere for lunch and friends of ham looked inviting. However, after 30 minutes of waiting I discussed with my wife about asking where was our order, but was told to leave it a little as they looked busy. Not impressed I actually discovered it had been 45 minutes since ordering and not a word on our order so decided to ask some staff in the restaurant who looked decidedly confused about some orders. The chef stated he hadn’t a clue which table some orders were for as they only had the name of the waitress against it. That’s not great practice if you ask me!!! When I stated that it had been 45 minutes since ordering the waitress replied, sorry but we’re very busy. I probably could have popped across the road bought the ingredients and cooked it quicker myself. 5 mins later our “lunch” arrived. Seriously not impressed with mine which was basically some cucumber and tomatoes chopped up with an olive, no seriously, an olive, just one olive possibility just half though, and about a third of a piece of sourdough and lightly drizzled with oil. All for the princely sum of £8!!! My wife’s stew tasted rather nice, £12, which was probably pre prepared but would not have taken 45 minutes to make and deliver to our table. The waiter who delivered our, ahem, lunch, said sorry for the delay but offered no manner or excuse or apology for such late delivery. The establishment, in my opinion, is not one I would say was food oriented in any shape or fashion but one designed for drinks as the layout would dictate such. Please please please avoid if you’re in anyway in a hurry or even hungry as our visit to Ilkley was cut way too short which is a pity as the town seemed rather nice.

I’m a fan of Friends of Ham, especially the Leeds branch. But felt the food portions were small and wine on this last visit wasn’t great. So all in all felt it was overpriced for what we got. Meat selection was ok regarding the slices for the cost, but £4 for two slices of sourdough with a small pot of olive oil was a bit much imo. Unlikely I’ll be back unfortunately.

Following knee replacement surgery, Friends of Ham was chosen for my first lunch out with friends. Service was impeccable and our lunches were perfect. I chose cheese and chorizo sourdough grilled sandwich with hot honey. Delicious! We will be back soon. The only minor point were the stone steps at the front. They’re high and there’s no railing. Coming out of the restaurant, still using a stick, I managed to twist my knee as there wasn’t anything to grab onto. Perhaps for those who aren’t nimble on their feet, can I suggest a metal rail leading up to the front door, (which opens outwards)?

If it hadnt have been for the quality of food then the place would have been deserving of a 3 out of 5 due to the service. I was sat outside and despite being advised that it was table service I was ignored for almost all of my visit. I had to go in and ask for a menu, then go back in and order as nobody came out, nobody asked how my food was, nobody took my bowl away away or asked if I wanted a dessert, and nobody appeared to ask for a bill so I had to go back in and pay. I wouldn't go back though based upon the service. Maybe those sat inside get treated better.

The food was good, selection of beer also good. Enjoyable cornichons. Took home my surplus of chilli jam.. I thought it a little cold with the doors open, but other than that, can't fault it.

My wife & I were entertaining friends up from Norfolk this weekend (16-17oct21) and after a wonderful walk around Strid Woods on Saturday, spent a few hours strolling around Ilkley yesterday. Having browsed the windows of Dacre Son & Hartley's estate office we needed a 'pit stop' and so took an outside table at Friends of Ham, very close by on Wells Road. We tried a few locally-brewed beers then decided to go for a Ploughmans (for 2 but shared by the 4 of us). The food was fresh and very tasty - one of the best ploughman's I can remember, actually. The staff were friendly & efficient, also. I rate this place very highly and am looking forward to going there again.

Stopped here for a light lunch and it was really pleasant, probably the nicest anchovies I’ve ever had done in a lemon sauce. Was a lovely experience sitting outside watching the world go by.

Nice cosy pub with outside seating, friendly atmosphere, quick service. Beer was tasty. Plenty choice of good quality ham and cheese and you can create your own board with ham and cheese of your taste, serving with sourdough, olives etc.

Lovely place, great pizza & fast service. Andy & Isabelle couldn’t have been more attentive. Great to watch sports on a Sunday afternoon & pizza/pint for £10 deal can’t be beaten.

Booked afternoon tea here for myself and over 20 guests for my milestone birthday having read a review that rated this venue as providing a good experience, however, I did not receive the same treatment which ruined my birthday event. Waitress Olivia advised that my entire birthday party was only allowed the vegetarian option of food (sandwiches) even though I myself am not vegetarian and neither were all my friends/family/guests. This vegetarian option turned out to be very basic consisting of a few stale sandwiches and fairy cakes. When these sandwiches arrived, there was no finesse or presentation - the whole thing was very slap dash – looked rushed. In addition to which the teas and coffees were brought out a good 15 minutes prior to the arrival of the stale sandwiches so all hot drinks were cold by the time the basic vegetarian option on sandwiches arrived. There was no pastries. This was the worst afternoon tea I have ever experienced, I felt totally humiliated in front of my guests and it totally ruined my birthday event. But hey ho, I was advised there was a wedding reception taking place at the same time and the kitchen were busy with the wedding parties' event which the hotel clearly prioritised over my birthday party, and this showed in volumes! I most certainly would never recommend.

We had a short break in Ilkley and looked for an Italian restaurant. This place was a revelation- the food was so very good. I would come back to Ilkley just to visit here again. The staff were excellent and the restaurant was spotless. Situated quite near to the station. Good price for an excellent meal. Thank you

Popped in on a weekday for tea. Both myself and my hubby had the steak and mushroom stroganoff. We didn’t like how it was served. The steak and mushroom sauce was in a dish alongside the smallest portion of rice and a bread roll (which we thought was very random). Banoffee pie was tasteless and sticky toffee pudding just ok. Always a lovely atmosphere and the waitress was lovely. Shame about our tea!
