After a walk around the fantastic castle, we struggled to find a place to eat as most were fully booked. About to give up and head home, we stumbled across the Middlegate Hotel cafe. We were beckoned inside by the owner but we were asked to fold down our baby buggy for some reason even though there was loads of room (Sure whatever). First impressions were not great, I think we would honestly have left if we’re not all starving. The decor: old and tired and the place didn’t look the cleanest. First of all, the service was terrible. We needed to change our daughters nappy and discovered that there was no baby change. We noticed that the adjacent hotel area was completely deserted and private so asked the owner if we could I use this space.NO was the answer, unbelievably. Apparently this hallowed ground was out of bounds to all customers of the cafe. My wife and mother proceeded to change our daughters nappy on the floor of the single cubicle toilet. We had to ask for a menu after 10 minutes of waiting. Then, while halfway through ordering at the till, the owner suddenly left to serve food to another customer which was baffling. Then went into the kitchen to ferret around in a fridge and knocked over a bottle which spilled liquid all over the place. After he had cleaned that up, chuntering under his breath, we managed to complete our order for which the till subtotal was displayed to us as £9,964.85. “We can’t afford that” said mum (probably dying not to laugh). So we then had to wait until he realised the mistake and put the order through again. The food. Absolutely abysmal. By this point we were in hysterics as it was so comically bad. A safe option of burger and chips (I thought). The chips were poor and rubbery, no salt of vinegar or even sauces on offer. The burger, made up of two 5mm rubber discs with a flappy bit of undercooked bacon with cheese. The whole thing looked and tasted like it had been assembled a week earlier and then frozen to be deep fried at the desired time, dripping with grease. I couldn’t finish it. My mum had chicken soup which looked like a steaming bowl of sick. She had half of it but I think she was glad that COVID had decimated her sense of taste earlier in the year and quite frankly I was jealous of that fact. My wife and Dad both had a scone and their only complaint was that it came with whipped cream. I’m hindsight, I think we would all have chosen to starve a little longer than eat here again. Having said that, it made us cry with laughter at how bad it all was, so perhaps memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Very enjoyable stay, we only stayed for two nights and wished we stayed for longer. Peter and his wife were very amiable, breakfast was great, while with the evening meal the chips and steak was the best we ever had. Pete’s wife was very friendly and even gave the three of us a packed breakfast to take away, as we were leaving early in the morning. Firstly I just want to say pembroke town was beautiful we loved the scenery and the castle. Please be aware We arrived before 2.30 the building was closed we had to wait 3 hrs the owner refused to apologise saying he was open no you were not I know what time we arrived. As a hotel we were expecting atleast an open receptionist we were greeted by a sticky top bar. The smell of fat was.horrendous as the kitchen door was open. In between sorting out arrival he was putting on the fat fryer for a builder that was staying Owner unprepared to greet us was flapping and telling silly jokes too over friendly to a point we had to ignore him The place looks derelict filthy windows and cobwebs everywhere i thought it was a wind up The place has fousty clean but just surface cleaned the corners had not been done for.a.decade you could tell furnishings were grim and carpets buggy. Chairs were dated paint peeling off the list goes on grim Narrow hallways fire escape was a floor down no other fires escapes near room Room was dated windows dirty tv blurry holes in walls bathroom was tiny could barely move Carpark we parked at a pay point as we were not given directions at the hotel so we wasted time.having.to repark no aopology Breakfast was grim swimming in fat and who serves tinned tomatoes with beans on a positive we we were asked if we wanted more no thanks I went hungry Ownere wife barely spoke owner didnt stop or get the message he was annoying he will actually tell you he is annoying The owner told us he really needed to take our temperature due to covid but he wasnt going to.bother he had so much to check so we were not checked and could.have put others at risk or ourselves unbelievable So.if the owner reads this review please revamp your property it is not a clean comfortable place to stay I felt like I was dossing have stayed in better hostels. This cafe was a reflection of the ghost town we visited which is a shame seeing as the castle is amazing, in a town with so much history. Anyway it was deserted when we walked in but one of the tables was marked reserved so couldn’t be that bad, we thought. We were with my sister in law and husband all ordering a light lunch before moving on to the castle. The owner seemed obsessed with his bank not allowing him to have a business account ( not surprising) and said cash would be preferred. We ordered 2 prawn salads and a cheese sandwich. Well what can I say ? In between updates on the business bank account and some terrible jokes. Our lunch turned up , which we had to prepay with cash only due to the buisness bank account situation. Old beetroot, turned brown, silver skin onions, also turned brown and a pile of old prawns, which literally squeaked on eating, . The cheeses sandwich was your standard brown bread , soggy bottom, and totally tasteless. The final straw was the dried up lemon to squeeze over the prawns and a tomato with something white and indescribable smeared across it. We got up and left !,

Today we went on an planned visit to Pembroke and ended up at the Millgate cafe. We went inside and stood waiting at the counter waiting for a member of staff to appear. Eventually "Basil Fawlty" appeared from the kitchen ranting how his daughter hadn't bothered to turn up today and how she wants him to buy a car and how he will play her at her own game. Who cares? We certainly didn't, all we wanted was lunch! Eventually we got to order 3 cooked breakfast and 3 cokes £30 - expensive considering the bad decoration and deterioration of tables and chairs. One we paid, we were give 3 black serviettes (which he had bought from a job lot!!) And 2 small sachets of cheap tomato sauce between the 3 of us. While sitting waiting for the food, we observed the man "clean" a table which was a quick squirt with flash bleach and a quick wipe (he didn't move the slate table mats and it really was a token clean considering cleaning should be done under a Covid cleaning schedule and there is no way this was). Eventually toast arrived at our table, cold, butter thinly spread over but not into the corners of the bread. So we have the toast which was part of our cooked breakfast but as yet no sign of the rest of our food!! Still no sign of the rest of the cooked breakfast, I dared to ask for some butter and tomato sauce to which Basil loudly shouted 'well how much do you want, I'm going to have to charge' Really? We had 2 sachets of cheap tomato sauce, how dare we ask for 1 each. I then told him that if we hadn't already paid, we would have walked out!! Disgraceful way to run a business. We eventually got the breakfast which was chucked on the plate. Sausages were pre cooked and not fresh. Not a good experience and certainly would not go again, really not interested in how unreliable your daughter bus (he told everyone who dared to step into the cafe). So Badil, next time your daughter doesn't show up, don't bother opening because you came across as a manic idiot

Came for breakfast and got greeted by a very nervous man. Telling me something about the hotel guests. Bit confused as to why he told me but hey.. I ordered breakfast for both me and my partner and got told they only do cups of tea, not pots so I go with it. only to find the hotel guests come down and served tea in a pot🤔 litte wait for breakfast but was expected... Music playing in corner was quite relaxing... Breakfast looked quite nice tbh but!... The beans tasted as if they had ketchup added as they where quite thick in consistency, the sausages 🤢 disgusting I couldn't eat them taste of fat... Rest of the breakfast was great the eggs cooked perfectly and the bacon had 0 fat so I was very pleased... Server man was very nervous when bringing food and do a very annoying laugh which was very loud. Just took it as nerves. The cafe was light and bright but the tables all but one matched... And the massive rug in the middle of the room was grubby and not clean at all. I liked the wall art that was cool. Overall I felt if they improved the sausages and gave everyone the same (tea pot or no tea pot) and they cleaned up a bit it would actually be a really good place to eat.

The sandwiches came on cheap square white bread, with the worst sausage on wall's/cash and carry type?? If you're going to run a cafe in a prime tourist location, you do it whole-heartedly. Unfortunately payment upfront upon order (there's a reason for this!)otherwise I would have withheld payment altogether...ripoff! We werent greeted or bid farewell, no cakes on display, it was cool and rainy day, we were wet and so shut the door behind us and she went and opened it! Uncomfortable, (yes there was a manky rug in the middle of the cafe, which doesn't strike you as something you can keep clean in a food environment) and unwelcoming experience leaving me hungry and thirsty upon leaving!

Following on from watching the "Me before you" film , we decided to visit the castle ( where ever it was ) .. This led us to booking this accommodation in Pembroke through Trivago and hotels.com due to the close proximity to the castle .. What a mistake .. The hotel is awful like a rundown blackpool B&B . When we arrived there was washing everywhere in the bar area and were stood around for about 10-15 mins before we were seen . And the smell from the cafe attached was overwhelming .It turns out that the hotel had not received the booking from hotels.com the room we had booked was already being used for the week .To be fair we were offered another room for the same price ( on first impressions this was a nice gesture ) the owner mentioned that the room was not at same standard as the others . The room had 3 single beds , a tiny CRT tv from last century and 2 skylights with plastic bin bags to block the sun out . ( something about night shift workers )I would not have stayed in this room if it was free to be honest .. Not a place I would return to - but I have to add this is not 100% fault with the hotel ..

The owner was a nice bloke and we chatted away with him about trade and the shooting of a film taking place in the town that day.We both ordered the mega breakfast and a coffee and it was really tasty and filling.Great food good prices and a brilliant host. Definitely recommend to anyone who's in the area.Mike and Kari.

Came back to the hotel after looking around the town for somewhere to eat and was just about to give up and order a Chinese. when Peter offered to open up the cafe especially for us so we had somewhere quiet and relaxed to eat our food. Thanks!!I had a prawn jacket potato and my partner had the cod and peas.Everything was lovely from the wine to the meal, the portion sizes were a little on the large side and we had no room left for dessert!

Hosted by Peter and his family you get a menue on paper and even a better one by Peter's verbal description. Prices are lower than in the other main street restaurants and the food is at least as good. Very recommendable!

We came in here for a scone and cappuccino. The cappuccino was poor quality, sour tasting. The scone was warm and quite big, but the jam was poor quality and the cream was whip creame, not proper cream, tables and chairs were dirty.

Was welcomed in with good humour, friendly and chatty staff who couldn't do enough for us! Outlay clean and pleasant.Ordered a mega all day breakfast and two small for the children (specially cooked as they had finished small breakfast at 11:30)Food was as expected, big and filling! No complaints.Overall good food and great service!

Having a few hrs before the ferry we decided to eat in Pembroke. Having left Brown's in great haste ( see review ! ) we came across Middlegate restaurant which was a cafe in Main st. When I went up to the counter to order I was greeted by a youth who informed us that we would have to buy bottled water as the tap water came from a tank! We found it strange that the staff didnt come to our table to take our order as in most European towns this is the norm( Apart from carvery obviously where you pick up your food at the counter). We waited for approx 20 mins for our meals ( omelettes, kids meals, panini ) and my goodness the manner in which our meals were given to us was shocking! The waitress was a young girl of perhaps 13 who never looked at us,barked out the meals and then left us there with no cutlery! She did finally bring cutlery and when I asked her politely for ketchup she said " It's over there!" as she pointed to a press from which she had earlier retrieved the cutlery. We don't expect pampering in a restaurant but civility is not too much to ask for! The food itself was reasonable though pricey for what we got ( £25). The service and the dated decor would definitely keep us away from Middlegate in the future!
