The Mayfair Chippy, Fish & Chips in City of London, Westminster

One of the better fish and chips in London, with a very long queue. We had a reservation and still have to wait a while for our table. There is an option to choose the fish, cod or haddock, so we chose both; but to our unqualified palate, we couldn't tell the difference. We had one set (Mayfair classic) and one fish only.

note 🇹🇷&🇬🇧 🇹🇷 It is important to make a reservation, otherwise you will have to wait in line for 30-45 minutes. It was the best “fish & chips” I have ever eaten. Be sure to try this place. An Italian lady took such great care of us that we were surprised by the service and attention we received. We thank them from here. Note: We even took a photo with him 😀

The best part of my experience was the fish and chips. We waited in line for a long while to get in. Another party came after us and got in ahead of many people because they knew someone inside to get them seated. When we were seated we sat at a tiny counter against the wall where people kept bumping into us. That really wasn’t a big deal overall. One woman complained about sitting at the counter and they promptly sat her at a table instead. All in all it was a mess with regards to service and turnover. I would not go back.

Great service, great quality food. There was a bit of a wait to be seated but the food was so fresh it was worth it. Maldon rock oysters were fresh and very delicious. I also ordered the Mayfair classic which had a crunchy exterior and juicy delicious haddock. Very delicious.

Great fish and chips in the area. Cosy place, with great quality food but always overcrowded. Always better to book ahead before going otherwise you will be waiting in queue for a bit.

We arrived with no reservation for a party of 2. We waited maybe 20 minutes then were seated. I ordered the standard fish & chips, which was very very good.

Make a reservation beforehand, it's a very popular place. Normally I don't prefer fried food outside, it upsets my stomach a lot. I didn't have the slightest problem. It was soooo delicious.

Great fish and chips, the quality and portion was filling, so excellent value! The place is really nice, with plenty of tables inside and a few outside. Booking is advisable, however walk-ins are accepted so long as you queue; the wait wasn't too long as it was early, around 15/20 minutes, which is the standard in London. Only negative note was some of the staff's attitude: it was indeed busy, but as grateful as we were that they found a place to squeeze us in, we found the "we're doing you a big favour" approach, with the occasional curt answer, quite annoying. I understand bookings take precedence, as it should be, but clearly they do make space for walk-ins (proof is that when I tried to book online earlier on the day, it was fully booked, and yet several tables freed up for walk-ins), so there's no need to treat people as 'lesser customers' if they don't have a booking, since they, too, are paying customers.

Eating fish and chips in London was still on our bucket list. Luckily we found the Mayfair Chippy on a side street off Oxford Street. The fish was top notch! The colleagues from the “North Sea” in Germany can give you the recipe. And at the end there was a bag of sweets, which rounded off the great service.

Food was excellent, they have non-alcoholic batter.

Who comes to London and doesn't try the famous meal in Britain, which is fish and chips? He may not try it, but he may not taste it at the most delicious and famous restaurant serving fish and chips. Without compliment, it is delicious and not a mistake. The place is very crowded and small and requires a reservation or you will have to wait in line like me 😅 Delicious and you can choose either shrimp or fish I ordered shrimp and it came with three sauces The seasoning is delicious and looks like luqaimat 🤣🤣🤣 To be honest, the meal is heavy, filling, and tastier than you can imagine. My goto fish & chips place. Short walk from bond street, cozy environment, high quality fish & sauces. Try the classic with fresh juice. Without reservation 30 mins wait outside.

The hype is real!!! My husband is obsessed with fish and chips. He read all the reviews on this gem. We finally had the chance to eat here. We arrived late (9:30pm)without a reservation, but they managed to seat us. The fish was fresh and juicy and the chips were not hot like the fish. Mushy peas were unexpectedly yummy! This gem definitely lives up to the hype. Please share your experience.

Food - not bad. Much on par with most chippies in London, not special at all really. Service - this is their biggest downfall. The person in charge of seating people on the day we visited was a highly strung, overly rude and unpleasant 20-something European who looked so stressed out by her tiny restaurant being full (with a queue of 10 outside) that she was going to burst. She soured the entire experience of the visit. Completely lacking any charm or customer service skills and really brings the establishment down. When we walked past later in the evening she was arguing with a customer out the front. Classy. Atmosphere - it's full of Americans talking at the top of their lungs about their tours and things they've seen and how their FRIES aren't cooked right etc. Really hard to sit through a meal if I am honest. Overall it's a tourist trap with not a hint of London about it. You can do better than this.

The best fish&chips I have ever had. Stuff is very helpful , friendly and professional. Highly recommend but you would definitely need a reservation otherwise you probably have to wait to get a table.

First visit here and I have to say I really liked the fish and chips. Went for the haddock and chips with mushy peas. It was extremely nice. The chips were cooked well (would have preferred a few more) and the Haddock had lots of taste, with a crunchy batter. Mushy peas were gorgeous and the tartare sauce was to die for. Prices were very reasonable. Staff were friendly, Service was a bit slow but bear in mind this is a VERY popular place and we didn't have a reservation so we were just happy to get in, reservations would be advised although if you can't get a seat they do a takeaway service. The atmosphere was relaxed, loved the tables, the tiles on the tables were amazing. Overall I'd love to go back again, having been to many many fish n chip restaurants/shops in London,this is unfortunately not the best in my opinion but definitely a serious contender for the number two position. Would highly recommend a visit here.

Amazing food, the best fish and chips that I had in London! However the space is really small and crowded, without a reservation at least an hour in line to not even sitting on a table, only the bar, and its really hard to get a reservation, at least a month in advance. Would recommend overall, the truffle fries are amazing and the fish is super crispy and flavorful

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU OR ANYONE IN YOUR GROUP HAS A NUT ALLERGY!! We called ahead and were reassured that they could handle our kids’ food allergies, with the only caution to be careful and that they did not have a separate fryer. But they said they could accommodate us and that it would just take longer for our meals. We arrived that evening, and when I checked in they said yes we have your booking and yes we see the allergies. We had to wait 25 minutes past our booking time (outside in the cold) for our table to be ready. But when we were seated, the manager came over and said he would not serve anyone with a nut allergy. The worst part was that it was unclear as to why - he kept saying that there were nuts in the bread in the kitchen, and traces in different foods, and then he kept talking about gluten (which was not our issue!). His inability to articulate if there were nuts in the fish and chips, or why it wasn’t safe was troubling. We decided to leave and eat elsewhere. It would have saved us a lot of time and trouble had they directly said when we booked that they would not accommodate nut allergies. We completely understand that there are many, many places where we cannot eat, but the lack of communication and the last minute refusal to serve us was unacceptable communication and does not speak well to their service.

The long line was worth the wait. Excellent food, welcoming atmosphere, exceptional service. It's cheap? No, but it's worth it.

I had takeout and it’s a small building so waited patiently outside for my food. And eventually stared and stared at a bag of food on the counter before finally enquiring whether it was mine. Guess what 😜 Was delicious though and worth the extra wait

Wow, the amazingly Delicious. While visiting the area, we were forewarned how amazing this restaurant would be and now I can’t simply say enough, as my taste buds were in love. The fish and chips are the best I’ve ever had. I’m truly tempted to visit this location once again prior to leaving London. I recommend making reservations, as this would ensure a short wait. This location was extremely busy, and the food justifies the by itself. Again, I highly recommend this experience!!!

The food is fine, but they add automatically a service charge to your bill of 12.5% (it is optional to pay it but you’re never put in a position where you can refuse it). This practice puts the customer in a difficult position in the case he doesn’t want to pay for it. A restaurant, I believe, should never add an expense to the bill silently especially if it is a tip.

Was really looking forward to eating here but was a let down. The place is definitely over hyped, and not worth queuing for, in my opinion. The fish and chips are pretty average - the batter was actually a bit soggy, not as crisp as you'd expect. And it's also quite over priced at around £20 for an average fish n chips. Secondly, the service is also a bit disconcerting, you are greeted with the staff cautioning you that the table is only for 45 minutes. From that point on, you get the impression that they are trying to get you out as quickly as possible. Understandable that there are queues outside, but after having waited yourself, and paying a premium (obviously not for the quality of food) you'd expect to at least be able to relax, but seems like a sprint from start to finish.

Great food, nice and quick service. Only the fries weren't entirely convincing. The “cod” was wonderfully tender and the remoulade (?) was well seasoned.

Everything is in order and delicious

I ordered shepherd's pie and fish and chips! It was a lot of food, but it was delicious! When I first entered the store, the receptionist seemed to be busy and the one male clerk seemed a little scary, so I wondered if it would be okay? However, the other staff members were very kind, especially the girl who served me, and she was smiling by the end, so I was able to enjoy my meal in a good mood.

Price is affordable if you're willing to spend it haha but overall the service was lovely as we were taken care of nicely without having any trouble. The ambiance was alright not the greatest as we came when it was packed.

I haven't tried the fried fish from other places so I can't compare it (who said it is available everywhere in the UK), but the fried fish is good, but the quality of the mussels varies (different sizes, some have sand in them which makes the taste bad) and the soup is good.

Worth the wait for this one of a kind Fish and Chips. We stopped by without reservation and needed to wait for an hour to get seated, I am telling you it is worth the wait. My fam and I left very happy and full. Thank you

The Haddock was some of the best I have ever had. The batter shear perfection, light, fluffy, crisp and absorbed the vinegar perfectly. The chips thick fluffy with a great crisp to them. Presentation was great and paired excellently with a London Pride Amber Ale. Service was impeccable and atmosphere laid back and chill. I'll be back...

One of the best adventures with Fish & Chips. Unfortunately, you have to wait in line for a while because the place is very popular. Perfectly fried fish, both cod and haddock. Tasty, crispy fries and 3 sauces. We highly recommend it.

I made a reservation on a weekday night. Fish and Chips with 3 sauces was about £22. The batter is crispy and delicious! It was a big cod, but I was able to get through it easily. There were so many chips that I was full. The space between the seats was narrow and it was a bit uncomfortable, but it can't be helped since it's a small restaurant. There was a line when I left.

We ate very delicious fish and beautifully sauced french fries. Even though it was a Wednesday during the week, we waited in line at the door. If you are sensitive, you can check the contents of the things you eat and indicate them.

I ate fish and chips several times during my trip, and the one here was delicious. However, the portions are huge, so I recommend sharing a large one between two people and ordering one lighter item. I gave it a ★-1 because the clerk's attitude was bad, like Gori from Slam Dunk, but the other clerks are very polite. It's better not to talk to Gori. Also, even if I made a reservation, I had to wait about 15 minutes, so those with tight plans should be careful.

so lets start by saying the food was absolutely terrible there was a hair in it and there was also a weird bug on it. the service was actually really good the waitress where very polite and i gave them a 10 pound tip but they said they wouldnt give me a refund for the fish and when i complained then just gave me a different portion which actually tasted really nice but overall dont come here this place has bug infested food and tell the chefs to keep there hair up :(

Food is good, fish is fresh and generous portions. Beware they will sneakily add an "optional" 12.5% service charge to the bill without informing anyone. (and expect payment) What service did you actually provide apart from taking the order and sending the food??? Fish & Chips is fast food!

The cod was fresh but tastless . I had to eat it with loads of curry sauce. It was also too greasy.

My favourite fish and chip restaurant in London. I’ve been here so many times I’ve lost count. My go to is the Mayfair Classic with batter cod, chips and 3 sauces (the curry sauce is particularly delicious)!

Excellent atmosphere, varied cuisine (pasta, pizza, Asian, etc). Price between £15 and £20. You have to arrive a little early, as you sit down as the tables become free!!

Rude hostess, we received an email telling us that our reservation was canceled, then 20 minutes later we received a call telling us that our reservation is available, the hostess aggressively reproached us for not not being on time, we explained to him what had happened. But when bad faith prevails over reason, what is the point of arguing? we did not want to debate with this incompetent person. The time allowed for brunch was only 45 minutes so no choice to eat quickly, very very bad experience

Amazing! Visiting from the US and we wanted to find some good local food. There was a line outside, and it was so worth the short wait. We had fish & chips and shepherd's pie. Would absolutely recommend it to anyone wanting some authentic British fare.

To avoid any misunderstandings, it is NOT inside the Mayfair Mercato but just next to it. Reservation is recommended as I could only get a table because I was alone. The prices are definitely above average but for that I had the best fish & chips I ever had. I took the Mayfair classic for 22.50, with fried cod, mushy peas, tartar, curry sauce and chips of course. It was just perfect, everything is made a la minute, fish is not too oily fries are not frozen, both of them supwr crispy but softand they taste great. Honestly it was a huge portion so I could not finish the chips, but they do deserve to be called one of the best fish & chips place in London.

V crowded place.. Fish and chips are the best.. u can choose which fish u need from cod to xyz.. there are 3 options for classic but the menu has more options. Once u start eating the fries, u feel fuller.. so start eating the crispy fish first and in between fries. Taste good and served with mayo, mustard, green and red sauce..

Best fish and chips in the world. They have a gluten free option (which is rare in fish and chips land) and I am intolerant to gluten so am able to eat here!! They also have an incredible VEGAN option. Wow. It’s a jackfruit type “fish” and I am just so happy this restaurant exists. Thank you.

The fish and chips experience was exceptional. The food was delicious, the place was crowded, the service was fast, and they provide halal meals upon request. I highly recommend trying it when visiting the Mayfair area.

Lovely food . Tables jammed together , asked before our meal if we could leave in 90mins, hardly relaxing experience! Service ok but not perfect . This a place to go if you are a tourist and not a local. Anyway lovely staff and worth a trip if you want to experience fish and chips.

The food was really good… A little bit pricey and really crowded. The staff seem frustrated by the crowd… I would think that would be a problem they would be happy to have as a restaurant. Seems like they were annoyed by all of us being there…they weren’t rude maybe just tired from a long day.

Having heard all the hype, I had to give the Mayfair Chippy a shot, and it actually lived up to the hype. It was very, very good for a fish-and-chips place. I went for the regular-regular. Like, I took codfish in batter with chips and some tartar sauce and a beer. The fish was cooked to perfection. The batter was super crispy and very, very thin-layered, almost like a Japanese tempura. The fish was soft and delicious. Chips was very good. I really enjoyed the experience. Just keep your expectations down, as all in all, this is a fish-and-chips place. And quite an expensive one, in that. But if you're a fish-and-chips fan, I guess this is the place to go.

Great fun but incredibly busy and a bit chaotic. Constant long queues so advance booking essential!

So, I picked this place just because it was near Tubestation and I was hungry. There were people on the line, about 10 before us. We decided to wait. Hole situation was chaotic; people with table reservations went off course first and those in line try desperately peek inside and understand what was going on. Anyway, we stayed in line and finally get in, after about 40 min. We ordered basic set of fish and chips and the food was okay, not bad, not very good, in my opinion ordinary. There was no salt in portion, not in fish and not in chips. Peas were kind on mushy, not fresh. Curry sauce, why? So, all and all, I've have had better fish and chip portions from local pub... Hiphurray to the man who managed to hole situation, he had everything in control!

I had a reservation for 9 PM and I arrived a little early… There was a line out the door… And I have to tell you that the staff seemed annoyed that they had that many people waiting. They did seat me a few minutes early, but I felt like I was bothering them. They weren’t rude. They were just very abrupt and matter-of-fact. I ordered the classic fish and chips, which were very good… but I don’t know if it’s worth all the hype. Not that it was bad… The food was delicious… But the experience just seemed a little rushed and forced. 

We were seated very quickly, although we didn’t have a reservation and it was lunch time, quick service, fresh food and very generous portions!!

First, I ordered 5 orders Fish with potatoes, I didn't like it, all the oil 5/10 Fish without potatoes, I didn't like it, all oil 5/10 Crab burger 🦀 very small and tastes less than normal 2/10 Acceptable fried shrimp 5/10 Bad and dry calamari fingers 5/10 Total £76 Frankly speaking, it is not worth the amount or the taste is less than normal. I ate from Popeye's which is absolutely terrible I took a voucher for £65, meaning the most expensive fish meal 🎣

We just love it! Starting from warm welcoming till we leave the restaurant. An experience that we literally enjoyed it.

Food was mediocre, altho we had made a reservation weeks in advance we were seated right by the front door - cold & lots of foot traffic. Waiter was very nice, but even he couldn’t make up for the uncomfortable seating situation & lousy food.

I ordered the grill fish, not fried and the price was £28 for the fish onky. No chips, the fish was bream, a cheap common fish. outrageous. I believe they overcharged people because they are used to tourists who don't know better. The food was OK. Definitely not value for money. We felt robbed!!! For what it was! There was no price on the menu. A rip off. Tourists beware. Ps basic fish and chips was nice.

Last June, I had raw oysters, shepherd's pie, and fish and chips here. Both were delicious to say the least. The store was very busy so I waited for about 40 minutes. I'm going to London again this year, so I'll be repeating it.

Outstanding! In a city full of fish and chips, the Mayfair Chippy is a standout. We stuck with the basics - cod and chips - and couldn't have been happier. As fish and chips novices, the staff was helpful at describing mushy peas, the different sauces, etc. Worth destroying my diet, for sure!

Was recommended by my hotel for authentic Fish and Chips. Mayfair chippy was an un assuming simple tiny resturant and the service was excellent the waitress very sweet and polite. Needless to say delicious Fish and Chips was unbeatable I even ordered truffle chips which were delicious and well worth the calories. Will definitely visit again when in London next❤️

Delicious Fish and Chips.. but expensive as it is in a very touristy area

I had high expectations because of all the awards they received. After waiting for 50 minutes in the rain (with umbrella), the fish and chips were a bit disappointing. The cod was not well seasoned so it lacked in flavour, and the fries were dry and required sauce otherwise I wouldn't have been able to swallow them. Friendly waiters and nice atmosphere.

First time and this place is worth the hype!! Food was delicious and service was very good.

Gluten free friendly!! The food was delicious and I couldn’t believe it was all gluten free even some of the sauces! The staff were super helpful when it came to ordering and were very knowledgable when it came to what contained gluten / dairy etc. Only note it would be great if the allergens were online or on a menu! I almost didn’t come as I thought I would have no sauces! For any gluten free people I had mushy peas, vegan tartare sauce and vegan siracha mayo.

Our favorite place to eat in London. The service and food are always great! Anytime we come to London we make sure to eat here.
