best pub in brighton by far, great staff always friendly welcoming and efficient service! 10/10 for music from the excellent djs and 10/10 vibes every night. a must go place for every brighton night out

We were in the queue (a friend and I) and the man behind us in the queue was apparently rude to the security guard. The security guard then didn’t allow me inside because he assumed I was with the rude man, despite us explaining we didn’t know them. I hadn’t even said a word to him before I was denied entry. He let my friend inside, leaving me a woman alone outside at 11:30pm. When we were trying to explain the situation to the security guard he told us he didn’t care as he had a long shift and all his friends were out having fun right now when he has to work. Towards the end I got abit emotional about the situation and he shouted at me about how tears arnt going to get me anywhere. It felt like he just wanted to take out his frustration on someone in some weird power trip. This was my first time visiting Brighton and he completely ruined the experience. He had curly short hair. The other staff after seemed lovely and were sympathetic about it but they couldn’t do anything about the situation as they weren’t security.

As my first time coming to Brighton to support my friends at Pride I was reccomended this pub. As someone who has to drink little due to personal reasons I was appalled by the service at this bar. Within 5 minutes of being in the bar, without drinking any alcohol, I approached the bar and was told by a curly haired barman that he would not serve me. He was extremely patronising and rude, I felt like dirt. As one of my first trips to Brighton, this server hands down ruined my experience. Not only did he try to humiliate me but spoke to me as I was nothing. The atmosphere of the bar was brilliant but he ruined it all. I was stood waiting still for my drink for at least 10 minutes. He wore leaf decorations around his head and was extremely unprofessional. I say this from someone who has been a Supervisor of a bar for over 2 years in Bristol. Please sort your staff. I am disappointed. I would never allow my staff to justify how he spoke to me.

Great student bar, full of personality and great characters. Such a great people watching spot on the patio and the staff have more fun than us punters, don’t change!

Rebecca pours the best pint I’ve ever seen. She puts the pro in peroni. She was so keen on helping my friend in distress. She’s like a sister to me now. Ellie has the best English and drama is exemplary and I’m sure she will succeed in any walk of life. Pours the second best pint of all time and has a great music taste. Aimee is my favourite human alive. Her knowledge of the local area brings joy to my life and has improved my time in Brighton and hove by ten fold. Tom’s moustache is an all time classic. His ability to effortlessly fetch ice and change barrels is an all time win! Wow what a fella. Sadie and Eva are extraordinary also, gliding around the bar like Torvill and Dean making sure all of the punters needs are met. Top top stuff from the A team. Tony is an incredible bouncer. He has made me feel so safe and is a very approachable gentleman.

Great hotdogs, sadly very slow service despite being empty but the worst part was the gents toilet. Probably the most disgusting toilet in Brighton; a trough that stinks of stale urine in what amounts to a dingy cupboard. Floor is just a puddle of urine. No actual toilet for men either so don’t eat too much because there’s no facility for you. I can’t overstate how horrid the toilet situation is here. Truly vile which is a shame as the food was good.

New woman at the door didn’t believe my passport id and requested to look at my Instagram then my Apple ID on my phone, I work with the company as a bar supervisor. Bad attitude definitely will be thinking twice before I go back again. Dj and bar staff was lovely as always.

Very strange experience I had, which involved going into the pub for one drink, putting my one drink on a table to say goodbye to my friend as they were leaving (all within the space of under 20 seconds) , I come back to find my drink gone, there must have been under 15 people in the venue, the bar staff then tell me that they had got rid of it, as I was not allowed to leave my drink on the table? I then ask for another one as that's unacceptable behaviour to throw the drink I just paid for away? and I also ask for an email to make a complaint, and was thrown out? one of the strangest experiences I have ever had at a bar

Evening staff super arrogant. Messing about behind the bar I couldn’t even get a glass of water. Served me an awful tasting drink, kindly asked them to remake it and they refused saying I’d have to pay for another one.

Nice sunny spot if sitting outside , new benches are very skinny , therefore quiet uncomfortable to sit on also got wood splinters from them .... can be busy pub , on this occasion there was only one barman for a busy bank-holiday afternoon , Atmosphere always good, with good music , did not eat but saw food come out and it look reasonable basic menu of hotdogs and fries

The evening began fine. However, after consuming alcohol, I was abruptly ejected from the premises. Yet, what truly unsettled me was not the ejection itself, but rather the aggressive behavior of the security guard. He treated me disrespectfully, engaging in derogatory banter with his colleagues at my expense. Furthermore, he physically restrained me, forcefully pushing me towards the roadside, causing me to stumble.

This one double malibu coke cost £10.40. A truly extorisionate and unreasonable price for a drink that ended up being mostly made up of ice. The bar where not upfront about the price, and just demanded £10.40 after putting down in front of my girlfriend. Most people aren't expecting to pay that much, and most would pay just to get out of the awkward situation. I do not recommend this pub, there are cheaper pubs with a way nicer atmosphere. At the very least ask how much the drinks are before ordering, you'll be unpleasantly surprised.

Mashtun is a good bar just the bouncer experience needs to be upped guys were very rude mashtun staff are good though bouncer kicked my mate out because he went to the shop to get food eat it and come back the guy wouldnt let him come back in. I asked why and he kicked me out because i asked why

new bouncer is homophobic, wouldn’t let me gay friend in for being too drunk. i was with him all night and he was sober due to being on anti biotics. this has happened twice in a week. my other friend was also assaulted and harassed by a group of men, when she told the bouncers they ended up barring her and let the men stay (these men are known dealers in brighton so they probably have a deal with security). bar staff are annoying and rude and drinks are over priced.

I had a really great night until, unfortunately, a black female bartender was incredibly rude at the bar, so much so that me and my friend group decided to go home. We understand last night was busy due to it being St. Patrick's Day, but the customer service from her was just appalling, and she was incredibly rude for no reason. We were really lovely to her and were trying to order our drinks. I've been to this venue multiple times and have never been treated this way, which is incredibly disappointing.

It's alright. Drinks are priced as you'd expect them to be. Full of people dancing. Cute Polaroids on the wall. The bouncer was not particularly friendly. At all.

Ended up in this bar walking home to the air bnb! Good vibe and had chicken and braised beef loaded fries which were very good. Would go again despite the price of the wine!!! (7 pound plus for medium red).

What an amazing bar. I came here alone and was immediately welcomed by everyone. These guys have the mose friendly, superb bar with a relaxed atmosphere. Beautiful people here, highly recommended.

Suzuki-San is the OG master. Such a legend of the industry. Huge selection of bottles at very reasonable prices. Despite being such a small bar, almost every time I’ve visited over the years, even on a random mid-week day, I’ve bumped into whisky people I know from all around the world. Tokyo has a lot of great whisky bars, but I always make time for Mash Tun and Aloha.

Best place for a night out in Brighton. The service here is unmatched and the vibes from the whole staff from doorman to manager was impeccable to say the least. I had the pleasure of dancing the night away along with the staff behind the bar and a bunch of other young people having a great time. Me and my friends greatly appreciate the warm smiles from the staff and the music from the dj as it set the tone for the night. Big shout out to Ama, Niamh, Aimee ,Hector and Bella. The bouncers acted disgustingly all night, herding in customers like sheep treating us like children when we just wanted a quick drink and a nice night out. Various fights broke out and the bouncers (obviously) made matters so much worse; putting all customers at danger by fighting with 18 year olds for no reason at all. Please sort it out mash tun & Laine Brewery, the mash tun used to be a safe space in Brighton where people could just have a drink, have a dance and not be worried about any violence or trouble. Now it’s a tourist trap charging extortionate amounts for awful drinks to just witness an occasional brawl

Extremely violent security who are racist. Security guards encouraged violence from club attendees and man-handled a girl who was spiked. I had a dodgy feeling when people were being let through based on “knowing a bouncer or a staff member”. Minimal regard to safety. Bouncers use violent “attendees” to intimidate visitors when raising serious complaints. Bar staff seem powerless and seem to have no authority or knowledge in club procedures. I would recommended the place for people actually want to have a terrible experience

Miserable arrogant barman who could be bothered to pour a full pint. When I asked him to top it up, he pored a few more drops in and passed it over. Meanest got up I've ever encountered!

Fantastic place to eat and grab a drink - even turns into a fun night out later in the evening.

The Chicken Burger was seriously the best burger I have ever had bar none! Not even joking. The crisp of the chicken, the honey glaze and combo with the mayo and relish was too good!

Food was great! Staff could hardly be bothered to lift thier eyes from thier phones. It's like I was an inconvenience whilst they chatted and text leaning against the walls. They were happy to talk to friends who they knew but made myself and my partner feel very unwelcome. The girl that served the food was bang on, friendly and nice but the girls behind the bar had serious attitude problems or had hangovers.

Nice pub but 4 of us had food and it was the saltiest food we'd ever had. Genuinely inedible and expensive given how much salt costs. As a joke when we ordered tequilas and the bar had no salt (obviously it had all gone in the food) we ate a chip pre shot to get the salt fix.

Fun place if there’s nothing else to do, student pints are welcome.

I bloody love the Mash Tun! Mainly for a night out because if I'm there I'm in it for the drinks and a fun time. The food cheap and unbelievably good for the price, but it is pretty standard pub food - definitely good to soak up alcohol if you need it.

Smashing little pub. Good selection of drinks, and reasonably priced for Brighton. Guinness was smooth, and the Red Stripe was refreshing. Brilliant outdoor seating area with a good atmosphere, ended up chatting to quite a few people sat out there. Staff were nice, my mate ended up with a free pint as they had to move a barrier and got in his way a bit, a really nice gesture. Urinals could do with some TLC, but aside from that no complaints, I'd highly recommend.

Nice variety of drinks available, friendly staff welcoming, nice small buzzy atmosphere however have to get there early in the night in order to get in without long queues. Bouncers are friendly and don’t have power issues which is a bonus for a big city.

would be 5 stars if they didn’t shut the outside area after 11:30, the indoors area becomes too sweaty and overcrowded which is even more overwhelming for my anxiety. otherwise it’s a nice night out

Really dislike this place and never understand why I inevitably end up having a pint here on a night out. Always packed. Toilets are some of the worst I've seen.

Came down from London with the girls for Weston Wednesday. Did not disappoint. Really welcoming staff, brilliant music, and a nice safe atmosphere. We had a lush time! xo

As a Tourism Hotel Inspector, I have seen the best and worst edtablishments in my career, however the Mash Tun has to be the grubbiest eating establishment. The drinks are not great either… there’s a distinct smell of mould, sticky surfaces everywhere, dirty glasses and be careful where you sit, it is sticky throughout as I doubt the place has a cleaner .. and there are dangerously dripping & malfunctioning air conditioning units (H&S!) dripping mould dust and water over the customers and onto their food & drinks. I reported this to staff who Couldn’t really care at all. The staff then became very prickly and ultra sensitive… eaves dropping in our chats ( we are all in our 50+). be mindful of what you say in conversation. I’d leave 0/5 if only allowed me too ! I am making an official complaint to Brighton & Hove Tourist Board and the health and safety officer at the city council.

We always come here for a few drinks when we're in Brighton. It can get a bit 'student-y' late at night, but it's a good atmosphere and there's some great beers on tap. Such a shame they no longer do food, I loved the burgers!

Very busy, well placed, central Brighton pub. Very convenient, lively, good to sit outside but often rammed.

Dirty and expensive with zero atmosphere. Early Friday night and two of the bees we're off already. This pub's glory days are way behind it - it's sad, but we won't be back.

Me and my friend had to use the gents (girls emergency) and straight away we got kicked out for using it ! No Que no one else was waiting just the bouncer and kicked us out . Not Only that but we just walked out with him didn’t argue and he shouted at us ! Disgusted never again really disappointed

I've been here a number of times. Now I'm very critical of venues, more so working in the trade. This venue is a hidden gem. Staff have been 100% great during the dusk app cluster mishaps (almost said @@@@ ups). A free drink so who would complain. Many I bet. Staff as I say have always been bang on the money. Greet before you fully in venue.. a credit to managers and Laine pubs. More managers of venue. I will say I'm not a fan of outside heating. Just burning electricity. But hey renewables I have not tried food yet, that's one for not pub spy (or sly). Only down fall was the guys on the venue outside, didn't see SIA badges on display as they asked me what I wanted (both in tracksuits). Unless Im intox and drinking lucky Saint I would doubt it, I'm out to enjoy my night.

Spoke to a member of staff on the phone called Harry today who was super helpful. It's always nice to hear an up-beat voice!

The toilets in here are filthier than my Internet browser history. Totally ruins any drinking emporium when the urination station smell is so overpowering you think you'll need to take your next slash in a Biohazard suit whilst wearing a CPAP mask and Oxygen tank.

Had a coffee here before going to a gig in the Dome. It was late, but there seemed to be a lot of food still to choose from. Next time may have something to eat...
