Only a drink place ok staff really friendly and polite place does need a good clean to be honest seats a bit grubby but OK...was really airy as windows sliders were open

I had a shocker of a breakfast at the other Wetherspoons a 10 minute walk away Moon under the Square it was embarrassing so decided to try the other one The Mary Shelley ordered the Traditional breakfast everything piping hot proper butter for the toast £4.99 fantastic value for money.

Very busy as The Moon on the Square was unexpectedly closed. Table & menus were not particularly clean but this was a spontaneous visit, so I was just grateful to get a table. Ordered via the App to our table, the food was excellent and the staff were pleasant...one of the best Weatherspoons meals I've had.

One of the best Wetherspoons we've been too. Really big and spacious, food delicious, really clean and lovely ladies toilets. We watched the England game in there and the staff were brilliant, they must have walked miles as everyone seemed to be ordering via the app! Would absolutely recommend a visit.

Pretty rubbish steak of which 2oz of the 8oz was fat and a further 2oz inedible. Dry baked potato and cold onion rings to round off a totally forgettable experience. Nice pint of beer but not much can go wrong with that !

Busy but not as busy as the Moon, due to location, so easier to find a free table. Same great ale choice, food and value but more relaxing.

staff refused service and would not refund my money or offer a replacement. other staff members poking fun at the situation. which is typical of the teenagers who work here but unprofessional and hurtful to do to a girl of the same age! manager would not believe me when i spoke to him about this and kicked me out for crying. horrible people. i’m a young girl, not even an angry bloke or a karen and im now £20 quid less because of their incompetence

Usually the Mary Shelley is very good with decent food, excellent services and very good prices but on New Years' Eve, for some reason, everyone was kicked out then my wife and I weren't let back in as we didn't have ID on us (I'm 33 and look it and my wife is 31). I think the place got busted for having underage drinkers present but I found the management's response an overreaction. Still, on the whole this is a great pub and I'll still visit again, though only during the day I think.

When I came on Boxing Day to spoons I was there with my friend since she was going through grief. The people working were extremely rude and kicked us out “saying we were talking crap about them!” Never once had we said anything we were talking in depth about what she was going through! and they refused to serve us food and drinks after we had 2 drinks there. They were funny about our IDs when we are both above the drinking age: even more obvious from driving license and tattoos? I don’t know what sparked the workers to behave like this like maybe they wanted to finish early not sure! I had the worst time. I always have gone to spoons with friends and family and never experienced this! I feel off-putted going there now.

Went to the Mary Shelley for cocktails and lunch, food great. Cocktails great, service great. Only downside was tables were very sticky, even after they’d been wiped by staff. Toilets nice and clean.

The worst fish and chips I ever had. It tasted really fishy in a way it shouldn't be. The three of us ate a bit but decided to leave the rest. Some of the orders took too long to arrive. They had taken the food to another table. I usually praise the fish and chips in Wetherspoons, they are good in many of the pubs around the country, but not here! Disappointing.

It seems that these days the quality of both food and service is becoming depressing low in too many restaurants and pubs, while at the same time prices are going up! So when wanting a late lunch in Bournemouth, my wife and I headed towards what we thought would be the most reliable place we knew - hopefully an oasis in a sea of low quality - The Mary Shelley. I'm a great fan of Wetherspoons, and both my wife and I have enjoyed visiting The Mary Shelley before. You can probably guess what's coming next... :-( Ordered drinks and meals on the app from our table, and then went to the bar for a glass of tapwater. Our drinks were already being poured - great start! Didn't want to mess up the system, so didn't say anything about them being our drinks, but watched the bar staff put the drinks on the serving area ready to be delivered before she came over to help me next. Having been given a glass, and then gone to the dispenser to fill it up, and then visited the toilet and returned, our drinks were still sat there on the bar. I ended up having to pick them up myself. So not the 'great start' I initially thought it was. I ordered the Tuesday steak... tough, sinewy, and I actually took a photo of all the totally inedible parts (a good part of it) for the review. Having thought about it though, I think it might only put readers off their tea so haven't! Chips of both meals a little overdone. My wife's beefburger was dry and far from juicy. No one bothered at any point to ask us if everything was OK, not even when the plates (with left overs!) were collected. Now I DO appreciate you get what you pay for, and the food is far from expensive. All the same, this is below the standards (both food and service) that we've experienced previously at this and other Wetherspoons. Hence the heart-breaking title of the review - while one experience isn't necessarily representative, has The Mary Shelley gone down the pan like so many establishments have? :-( (3*'s by the way as the ale is great and highly cost-effective!)

Food was ok came out quick place looked clean although we had to wipe our own table... I was shocked to see women staff with next to nothing on dresses not far below bum not appropriate for staff members to dress this way not just because she couldn't bend down for fear of showing knickers but it looks untidy ... please weatherspoons tidy up some members of staff

We like a Wetherspoons breakfast but we were pretty disappointed at this particular location. My partner had the large breakfast with an extra side of beans and toast (because there's always such a small amount). The beans were luke warm and the toast hadn't even been bothered to be cut in half. I had the avocado muffin with bacon and poached eggs. Honestly mine was better than my partners but the muffin was quite chewy and the avocado has a peculiar consistency (instead of smashed, it was like it had been blended into a strange paste). The service seemed a bit too quick for my liking which might explain why certain items were hardly warm or chewy (if they been cooked and tried to keep warm). The gentleman who served us basically dropped our food and left. No additional check that we had everything we needed or even where to find things (like the coffee machine). Had to remind him we had extra toast for it to be brought to us and the drinks didn't come before the food (like in most restaurants). Was a very average, slightly disappointing experience.

This is a Wetherspoons and it is just what you would expect from the brand. The food and drink, is readonably priced, the service is fine. The location is a bit grim, but the whole area seems to be terribly run down.

This is possibly the best Wetherspoons we have been to.. The food was good and warm and the service was fast. Mary Shelley’s Grave is in the graveyard opposite.

Love spoons I'm known for it.... But steak that's worth eating at this price point isn't possible any more. Onion rings missing, the staff good as all ways they are spot on but when my plate was cleared not asked how it was.... Stick to pizza or the burgers. Raymond Blanc Brasserie is 18.95 for a main course...get a can on the way home.....

We've celebrated 2 birthdays here in the past couple of weeks & have been very happy with service we've received. The food & drink is good & very affordable prices. You feel safe & relaxed with security they have in the evenings.

Staff were superb as this is a very popular and busy establishment. Great variety of drinks pink gin, malts, very well kept real ales. Breakfast was really quick considering how extremely busy it was and staff were attentive and food served fast. Alcohol also served at breakfast if you want! But usual breakfast beverages also were popular!

I went to the Wetherspoons the Mary Shelley for a bite to eat the service was good and the drink I had was good but the burger was a bit cold overall it was good

As a hospitality manager myself i understand off days, sickness, no shows etc but what is off your menu isnt consistent to what any single chef would be allocated within rhis chain....how can you sell grilled chicken for burgers but no steaks or almost any other menu burger? We usually go to the Moon in the Square fir Sunday breakfast. With regret we decided on the Shelley. What a fiasco! Waited ages to give order, everything was labourisly written down, not electronically. Food was cold, the bacon butties had just been thrown together. The coffee machine was not refilled and we only got hot drinks when our food was eaten. We will be returning to the Moon. Never again.

Arrived about 2,15 for late lunch pub was still very busy found an unclean table which we wiped using our own antibac wipes barely any staff about the 3 we saw were rushed off their feet attempted to order via app but confusing trying to get daily deals then adding extra eventually flagged down member of staff who took our order and payment but he also seemed to have difficulty adding bread and butter to our order despite being busy food came fairly quickly although 1 order had no peas and still no bread and butter we had to flag down another staff member who informed us the side order hadn't gone thru plus even tho had our food, drinks would be quite a while by time arrived 1 drink order was wrong flavour and we'd almost finished our meal the food was however very tasty just poor service and off putting having to order via app or attempting to flag down staff!

If you want to go out with people not in your household & drink as much as you like with just a portion of chips this is the place to come!!! No one on the door to police who was coming in & the groups of youngsters were obviously just friends meeting up & the cocktail pitchers were flowing!! It's a complete free for all here!!

We stayed in Bournemouth for a couple if days and chose to eat at the Mary Shelley. The first night the staff were lovely, food was great and good value for money especially being a family.The second night, we were questioned an track and trace which apparently was mandatory but the staff member didn't have a lot of time for us and we felt he could nave been friendlier. He put us at a table and left us. No coming back, no menu, no nothing. Eventually we called over a member of staff who was great, took our orders and produced our food very quickly. The food was lovely. I understand this is a busy please but just felt we could have been dealt with better.

We had been to Poole and needed to eat on our return to Bournemouth and as we had eaten before in Poole at a Wetherspoons we thought we would try this one that my husband had spotted the day before. Although it was absolutely chucking it down and we had to queue....we were very glad we did as we didn't wait outside for too long and it was well worth the wait.

3 amigos y yo fuimos a tomar una copa mientras esperábamos 40 minutos por una mesa en la calle. Nos dijeron que usáramos la aplicación si podíamos debido al protocolo covid-19. Decidimos pedir 4 bebidas. Las bebidas tardaron más de 35 minutos en llegar y en ese momento el restaurante al final de la calle nos alertó para decir que la mesa estaba lista. Fui al bar para quejarme y cancelar el pedido y me dijeron que no era posible un reembolso porque las bebidas ya se habían servido. Literalmente vi que se servían las bebidas al mismo tiempo que me quejaba, por lo que tardaron más de 35 minutos en comenzar a hacer el pedido ¡Cuando el pub no estaba lleno! El gerente fue descortés conmigo y con mi grupo. Nos dijeron que no podíamos recibir un reembolso y nos dijeron que nos fuéramos. Así que pagamos nuestras bebidas y nunca recibimos las bebidas. Nunca visitaré esta o cualquier otra sucursal de Wetherspoons.

A bar run by teenagers who have no manners and are rude. Should have adults working there instead of childish rude children. But hey..will not be attending this place anytime soon again.

We popped into the Mary Shelley for food during the governments eat out discount days. We normally visit this pub for our weekend breakfast as it’s quieter than the moon in the square (another weatherspoons). However since lockdown the pub seems to be employing more abs more very young teenagers who are not interested in their jobs. Tables are left stacked with dirty plates despite loads of customers wandering around looking for tables. The weatherspoons app was not working during our visit and this lead to total chaos in the pub especially for single people who had to join a huge queue to order their food at the bar only to return to their tables to find someone else sitting at it. Other weatherspoons have ‘reserved’ signs available for this situation but we could not see any available in this venue. A single mother and her young toddler was having a real issue and on several occasions the mother had to leave the child alone at the table to get things like sauce, cutlery etc from the other side of the restaurant. The staff just plonked her food down and disappeared without even asking if she needed anything. Our order arrived and it was completely wrong. I ordered a ‘skinny’ burger but it arrived as a normal burger with chips. When I asked for it to be changed, the exact same burger was given back to me, minus the chips. They had just been removed from the plate. Everything about this visit was horrible. The table has the weatherspoons magazine and paper menus on them, how long had they been on the table? We watched the staff wipe tables and replace the magazine and menus from the previous diners back on the table. Tables were not santised after diners. One of the coffee machine was out of order for most of our visit, but this was only due to the staff being too lazy to empty the coffee grounds to enable both machines to be operational. This lead to people continuing to touch and try to use both coffee machines. Eat and drink here at your own risk!! Who knows what the kitchen looks like if this is front of house!!

My wife and I traveled to Bournemouth for a short break about a week ago. On the Friday and Saturday evenings we were tired, hungry and thirsty. We went into The Mary Shelly, found a table and ordered our food and drink. The service was fast, efficient, and on both nights the food tasted really good. The first night we had steak, and the second they had a manager's special for curry that was on offer. The value for money is first rate. The staff are incredibly helpful. We definitely plan to come back again to The Mary Shelly when we visit Bournemouth in the future.

I stayed locally on business and found the Mary Shelley both convenient and very reasonably priced. Would always recommend to use the ordering app at all Wetherspoon establishments as it’s very very easy and quick to use.

After visiting Mary Shelley's grave at St.Peter's Church across the rd, we raised a nice glass of Hardy's red to her in very comfortable surroundings. Under £10 for a bottle of Hardy's reserve. Ahh!!

Llamé a tomar una copa el lunes por la tarde. Estaba realmente impresionado con los letreros del pub Frankenstein y muy interesado en leer cómo el pub tiene su nombre. Pedí mi bebida en la aplicación Wetherspoons y llegó rápidamente. Creo que los baños de damas son más impresionantes que el pub en sí, pero fue una visita muy agradable.

All pretty basic, but what good value for money. We had a lunch time meal and it was really very good. Would certainly go there again.

As I’m quite new to this website I thought I would send my love to this spoons. I’m a student in Bournemouth and whenever my parents come down we always go for spoons, cheap as chips amiright? But my mum loves the author Mary Shelley, so this one is always her fav! We came for a meal and a pint and then went to see Shelley’s grave after. My mum nearly cried from her love for the Frankenstein book... weird but lovely experience!

We popped in here for a quick drink, found a table and decided to use the app to order as the bar area looked really busy with only one person serving customers. We waited 25 minutes for our drinks to turn up. There was an apology for the long wait as they said they we're understaffed.

After being out to the cinema with my son decided to have a bite to eat and suggested the MS as reasonably priced place to eat.We ordered from the snack and drink menu and the food arrived 10 minutes later as forecasted by the bar staff.We were about to tuck in when I noticed from a short distance away a member of the security staff basically eyes transfixed on us which made feel really uncomfortable.I was about to ask him if there was a problem when he approached our table.He went to my son's side of the table and crouched down beside him as he was eating.By this time my senses were overflowing on what was going to happen next?He told my son as he was wearing the wrong type of trousers on he had to leave the establishment no later than 9pm at the time it was 8.15pm.So we at least had the time to eat the meal I just been served.Would have been interesting if it had been 8.55pm.Considering there was numerous security staff outside and inside the bar when we arrived just after 8pm its strange that this "dress rule" wasn't pointed out to us on arrival or before we ordered our drinks and a meal.Could almost be interpreted let him spend some money here first then give him his marching orders.I would also like to point out there was several other customers not dressed as smartly as my son and also some other customers were a bit worse for wear and not even spoken too by the numerous security staff.As a result of this experience after what was before a nice evening I will not be visiting again neither will my son be crossing the threshold of this establishment again.I can think of many more bars where my money and my son's respect will be treated much better.I suggest Tim Martin owner of Witherspoons you reveiew your customers experience of your establishments as this experience has left a very sour taste and will past this shabby experience on to all and sundry.Your price structure is competitive which is good your customer service at best 1-star and I can say neither my son or I have ever been ejected from a bar on such a ridiculous reason.I rather pay more for my food and drink knowing I have better trained staff around me and they have their customers best interests at the heart of the business.Poor show won't be seeing you again ever!

My wife and I have used Wetherspoons pubs for many years, and usually find the food well cooked and reasonably priced. We have eaten in The Mary Shelley on several occasions in he past, and have usually had no problems. However, on Christmas Eve this year we had a very disappointing experience. It was the last day they were serving their Christmas menu, so we ordered two of the turkey lunches. When they were served, the pigs in blankets had no blankets (i.e. there was no bacon on the sausages). When I queried this, the member of staff who served us offered us (and indeed brought us) some bacon but said that the original way they were served was how they were sent to the pub. I would have thought that if the kitchen received sausages without the bacon, they should have realised this and made the necessary adjustments so that they were serving what was advertised on the menu. The vegetables were advertised as roasted parsnips (note the plural here) and Chantenay carrots. My plate has one tiny fragment of parsnip and about four mini carrots. My wife got a small lump of parsnip and two tiny carrots. I queried this, and was told again that the meal portions were delivered that way. Maybe this is a taste of things to come - if Tim Martin gets his hard Brexit and veg becomes harder to source, he is getting in early and conditioning his customers to expect less for their money. Just a thought. Also, my meal was lukewarm. I asked if they could heat it up, but was told that the whole meal would have to be replaced.Why??? I would have thought they had a microwave oven. We eventually got portions that were just about acceptable and the right temperature, but as my wife was finishing her meal she found a piece of pink plastic in the food. I notified a member of staff and the cost of her meal was refunded (I could have been difficult and informed the Council but I was really at the end of my tether by then) so I accepted the offered refund. We had wanted to have the Baileys chocolate bread and butter pudding as dessert but the young man serving said that they had none, and that in fact there were shortages of it all over the country, Funny that, we went down to the Moon In The Square about 300 yards away and got it without any bother whatsoever. If the pub had been absolutely stormed I could make some allowances, but despite it being Christmas Eve lunchtime, there was ample space available. I have eaten at a good number of Wetherspoons pubs in the past, but this was by some distance my worst experience. Management and staff here must really do better.

Disappointing really as the table was filthy (not enough staff) and the app ordering was quite quick the Christmas dinner that four of us had was a bit sloppy and looked rushed and rather roast potatoes than mash

MY wife and I visited The Mary Shelley a week ago. Busy spot with a cheery crowd - a good mix of all ages - always the sign of a well run establishment. Food was good, prompt service, and very reasonable. The was a notable presence of security staff who were checking for I.D. / age verification. I was slightly disappointed they didn't ask to see mine (or my wife's). Probably because I'm 64- and look every minute of it!

Ill start by saying that the food was nice, but the customer service was awful. Long wait at the bar & tables cluttered with filthy plates for long periods of time. The wait at the bar was so long & no acknowledgement from staff. The chap next to me complained about the wait & basically got a shrug of the shoulders saying 'we are short staff' no apology, nothing. Rude manager,poor customer service skills. You pay peanuts get monkeys i suppose! Wont be visiting this wetherspoons again!

Very busy Saturday evening (5 pm) but food came quickly and was good. Ham egg and chips x 2 - both enjoyed it. Finding a clean table was a challenge but we did it.

I went to this pub for a drink, it was quite busy at the time so decided not to eat, drinks prices were reasonable, recommended.

Fantastic value for money. Cannot fault a thing. Great food, great service, nice surroundings. Best chips and curry sauce ever!

we only stopped here for a drink but it was lively and an enjoyable evening! we went here a few times, really busy pub as well, only had a dink no food!

Nice Wetherspoon pub, we had food which was all nice, it was around lunchtime maybe 2pm and we stayed about two hours, the drinks are reasonably priced of course as is the food. Nice layout of the pub and well located.

Well this is one of the better Wetherspoons I've visited. During our holiday in Bournemouth had breakfast here once and dinner here twice on separate occasions. The place yes is a typical Wetherspoons but the three times we visited we're very pleasant tables available and cleared in a reasonable time. Also the staff at on the different visits were very friendly and pleasant. The food was served in a good time frame and on each occasion served piping hot. Also had a great choice of festival ales on. Other Wetherspoons should look at this one and follow their lead

OK, some Spoons are better than others but our experience here was bloody awful. It took a long time to get served with lager even though it wasn't busy, the staff seemed very inexperienced (Uni just starting so maybe Freshers starting jobs ?) and nobody seemed to be in charge. The 'food' areas were absolute chaos. Several meals were sent back whilst we were there, tables weren't being cleared or cleaned and it was actually (sadly) very entertaining to watch the chaos that was taking place. The poor old bloke on the next table to us was not in great shape and sat for nearly 30 minutes with someone else's dirty plates and glasses and leftovers on his table. He ended up starting to move it himself, at which point I collared a waiter and told him to clear the table and clean it immediately. When his food came, the waiter chucked it down on the table and didn't even acknowledge the customer or ask if he wanted anything else or told him to enjoy it (probably a reason for that looking at it !).. The place was also dirty (see the photo leading to the kitchen area - and this is the bit that IS visible to the public). On the plus side, the Stella was OK !!! I'd like to point out that we did try 2 other Spoons pubs in the area - The Christopher Creeke & The Moon In The Square and found these far more vibrant, welcoming and professional.
