Best Sunday roast in a long time!! Just got back and had to write this! Had the roast beef and it was beautifully cooked and the rest of the bits with it were also very good. And sticky toffee pudding to finish it off was fantastic also. And the customer service to top it off was fantastic. Would 100% recommend. And 100% will be going back for steak night.

Having had a lunch here during the week, which was the best steak that I have had in a very long time. Cooked to perfection and individual liking, medium, with all the trimmings. The flavours in the on the vine cooked cherry tomatoes was to die for and the large flat mushroom delicious 😋 The mushroom reminded me of our home picked farm mushrooms a flavour I haven’t tasted since a child. We decided to go for Sunday Lunch once more. We were so pleased we did this. Absolutely nothing too much trouble. We ordered extra cauliflower cheese and veg as we are not keen on sweet puddings. My word it was so good. The beef was delicious 😋 and a generous portion. The flavour they managed to bring out of the vegetables was extraordinary. The cauliflower cheese my favourite veg with a roast was amazing. I can’t recommend the Martlet highly enough - Fabulous place friendly, relaxed atmosphere and lovely staff and Landlady 🤩

Absolutely wonderful food. We have started a store and stay at Waterrow Touring Park nearby this lovely pub. We have been twice for Sunday lunch and we have had a fantastic evening meal here as well. I don't understand the negative review but all I can say is it must have been a 'one off' as we have had such lovely food here - Maybe try it again. We have found that the chef produces quality and quantity. I hate the small amount in the centre of the plate. This was an adequate portion and quality to boot. I can't recommend it highly enough. The Manager/Owner and staff are all very friendly. The car park is a fairly big area. The prices are value for money. I would highly recommend.

We had been thinking of visiting this little pub when in the area and so we did... We were allocated a table in the conservatory Dinner consisted of pork belly and scampi with thick cut chips The pork was, I am told, really lovely but I have to say that my scampi was not as expected - it tasted ok, it wasn't as hot and crispy as I had expected and the chunky chips were dry inside .. I should have sent my dinner back, but that would have meant that one would be eating while the other was watching.. not ideal. Would we come back if in the area again? Perhaps.. but there are other establishments to be visited.

We went for Sunday lunch at this lovely country pub. It was more than normal country pub fare. It was a cut above but quality and quantity. The starter and Sunday lunch were of a high standard. The best I have had in a very long time. On a par with a high end restaurant but with very adequate helpings and we are not small eaters. The staff were friendly, helpful and made you feel welcome. There is a mix of locals and Sunday lunch people making for a good all around atmosphere.

We recently stayed a few nights at the Marlet. Our room was the nest. Which is a family room. The other two were already booked. Had a very nice stay there. With a good locally sourced breakfast on both days. We had a meal in the pub on our first night. That was good too. It was a tough decision. Did we go pie's or the curry? The pie's won. There always seems to be a friendly atmosphere in the bar. And I qualified to sit at the grumpy old men table. The bar was well stocked. So I tried a local cider. A good place to meet for locals and visitors alike. Goo

Lovely pub, great beer, great dinner and a fab breakfast. Such a friendly pub that is clearly popular with the locals, not surprising as they have an amazing manager ( sorry didn’t get her name) who clearly loves her job, is sooo friendly and has a great interaction with her customers. This was our third visit to The Martlet. This time my husband decided to take advantage of the menu being offered as part of The Exmoor Food Festival throughout February. The starter was a trout fillet on a crisp salad, with what tasted like pickled pear. For the main he had the roast vegetable crumble with vegetables. My hubby is very difficult to please and he was blown away by the quality, taste and presentation. The rest of us ate from the normal menu which we thoroughly enjoyed. A great pub, deservedly well patronised . Looking forward to returning.

was very much looking forward to our rare evening out and being recommended The Martlet. We had the Martlet bake eggs with chorizo for a starter and it seems the chef forgot to remove the skin/wrapper off the chorizo as every mouth full a piece of wrapper came with it.We also ordered a second round of drinks which were devon mist & exmoor Gold but she came back with a thatchers gold, Lastly we over heard another table asking if there was a special board which apparently there was but we were never offered. The starter was taken off the bill but still came away very disappointed.

Less was more as inflation struck a group of 15 who booked a celebratory mid-week lunch. A set menu was chosen of 2 or 3 courses, priced accordingly. 3 weeks later, just before the event, we received a revised price: 2 courses for the price of 3. Rather than cast a shadow over the occasion, we accepted a 33% increase for 2 courses. My wild mushroom risotto topped with parmesan crisp and truffle oil comprised a heap of rice with some tiny pieces of unidentifiable mushrooms mixed in, topped with pea shoots and two parmesan crisps. When asked “is everything all right” I asked what mushrooms had been used? fresh or dried? or a mixture of both? I could taste garlic, but what about wine or vermouth and where was the truffle oil? I suggested a little extra parmesan would be welcome to complement the two crisps. She said she would ask the chef, and suggested I might like to order something else. As I had eaten half I didn’t want anything else and left the remainder as it wasn’t very enjoyable, but not unpleasant. I heard no more so upon leaving I spoke to the one person at the bar. She said the chef had gone home but the risotto had been made that morning! I was offered a small refund as a gesture and I returned to the dwindling group. Someone had purchased a coffee, served with a Biscoff. Then word got round that tea/coffee was being offered “on the house”. The stragglers ordered and after some delay, due to a bottle of milk being spilt, tea and coffee arrived - minus Biscoff and no teaspoons. My cappuccino was good, and we found some dessert spoons. A memorable visit. Long live Fawlty Towers!

When I phoned and booked a lunchtime meal, i asked if there was wheelchair access, I was told yes there is in the conservatory. The lady mentioned that we would need to go in by the double doors at the side of the conservatory. As it was raining I went ahead to see where we had to go, the lady I spoke too had laid a table for about 15 people in front of the double doors. She then continued to move the tables to another area in the conservatory so that my husband could get in. Would have thought that this should have been marked on our booking as I was told this was the only way in. When we drove into the car park there didn’t appear to be a space for the Disabled. I Managed to park and then had to push my husband up a step car park with shingle on to the road which is on a steep slope. I then pushed him to where we had to go in and was met with a step on the slope . This was not easy to manage. Also there is another step to get into the Conservatory which is quite steep for a wheelchair. One the way back to the car it was difficult to go up the step onto the road when it is on a steep slope. The Martlet Inn is defiantly not suitable for someone who is in a wheelchair. We did enjoy our meal and dessert, but it was spoilt by the bad access.

Last visited this pub some years ago, and things have very much changed. There is now a bright glass panelled summer dining room extension, which is remarkable and perfectly comfortable. The main bar was well populated as was the garden dining area. Staff are both welcoming, very attentive and entirely professional. We frequently select 2 starters each for lunch. Thus ordered a tempting venison pate, mussels & chorizo in broth, a perfect octopus based salad and delicious smoked haddock scotch egg, all prepared and delivered promptly. Scrumptiously shared. Each table is provided with a pitcher of iced water, which is a “nice touch”. Bar well stocked and competitively priced. Several local pubs have closed and the Martlet is one of the remaining best. We do visit the sister pub in Wiveliscombe which is worth a mention. Thank you for an exceptional lunch.

Once again another happy visit to this cosy country pub. The menu is extensive with a specials board. This is a very popular eating place so it's advisable to book well before. The owners work very hard to make the pub successful.

The food here is good, well prepared, good service and excellent value. With huge competition in the pub food business, the Martlet excels - certainy worth the visit.

This was our first visit for a family meal and it didn’t disappoint. The recent reviews were good, and so it proved to be for our lunch visit.

First visit since new ownership: As good as it ever was and just as friendly! The meal was superb. We are looking forward to coming again on a regular basis.

We popped in here today after reading the reviews and were fortunate enough to get a cancellation. We were made so welcome and had a lovely homemade meal. Would definitely recommend. Spotlessly clean. Thank you for a lovely evening.

We booked a lunchtime meeting of a local society with 35 attendees. From start to finish it was a first class experience. The menu choices which we had pre booked came up to expectations and were reasonably priced. The meeting room was equipped with a screen for the talk following the meal and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for the staff. A number of our members are elderly and they were very well cared for. Drinks could be ordered at the table. Immmaculate toilets!

We arrived midweek without booking and were made welcome. The service was good and the meal chosen was delicious. The reception from the owner was warm and friendly. The cost of the meal was reasonable and I would definitely visit at lunch time in the future.

Live quite close to the business so usually end up somewhere els3 and i really don't know why!! It's under new management but the change has made no difference in the service and standard of food you get. Always been impressed with this place and should make it my first choice more often.

After two previous good experiences we were disappointed on Friday evening when we took four friends for a meal. Slow service, a cold room and six average dishes- nothing very wrong just short on quantity and quality. A great shame as it is an attractive place as well as local for us.

It was our first visit to this pub since the new owners took over. The meal was excellent and the service very friendly and efficient. it was extremely busy which really spoke for itself on a Tuesday at the beginning of January! We will certainly go back very soon.

Having flown in from Toulouse that evening, we were looking forward to our Friday fish and chips. Staying overnight in Wellington, the Trip Advisor recent reviews and high rating led us to The Martlet Inn and we were not disappointed. Despite arriving at 8.30 p.m. without reservation the welcoming staff were able to ‘fit us in’. A lovely pub atmosphere, friendly staff and with good food and drink - just what we wanted!

Great pub, great food and great service and really like the decor too. Food was so good and fresh. It was quiz night the night we went and it was a great atmosphere. Like being in someone's front room. We joined in the quiz although we are not quizzers but made to feel part of it thanks to the quiz master. Don't know her name but she was great. Had a fabulous evening. Thanks to all at the White Horse

We didn’t stay at the hotel but had Afternoon Tea there which this review is about! Poor service as waiters seem to have no idea how to serve. We were rushed to pay as they were finishing for the day. We were not offered what type of tea to have. One of us asked for topping up the water glass while the other two got ignored! They had no knowledge of the place either given it’s a building with some history! A refreshing conversation was with the gardener who has good knowledge of the place, but unfortunately it was too late.
