One of our customers said that these do a Sunday lunch so we decided to try them out and what a terrible mistake that was. We got 2 large roast beef dinners for delivery and when they arrived they took just under 2hrs. the portions were small, the selection of vegetables where peas, carrots, cabbage and mashed potato. The actual beef was overcooked and was like chewing old leather, the Yorkshire puddings tasted like they had been sitting in an old Yorkshire pudding tray. I had to phone the Marsden inn on three separate occasions to ask where my food was & got told there was a slight delay yes we know this can happen so left it there. Then we had to phone back after an hour to ask where my food was and got told it was out for delivery then I phones again after waiting another 40 minutes after they said to me it was out for delivery. We will certainly NOT be using this restaurant again as it was a waist of £18. Even my mother's Sunday lunches are better than this lunch

We’d been looking for a pub lunch on a wet, dull bank holiday and to our surprise a few of the ones we’d used previously don’t serve food anymore or only do Sunday lunches. Maybes this is the signs of the times. Luckily the Marsden Inn located a mile away from the finish to the Great North run was open for meals. From the outside it looks Tudor like and inside it has a dark entrance with a restaurant to the left (empty) and a huge bar and lounge to the right. We ate in the lounge next to the pool tables and here was 2 bug bears, the floor was sticky and so were the tables. It is quite a gloomy interior with the colour scheme and style. There was a few drinkers in and piped music (replaced with football on the TVs). The barmaid was seemingly by herself dealing with the Inns residents as well as the bar and food orders. The menu has something for everyone and was really pleased to see the prices were really reasonable. Opting for the sausage and mash and the fish bites and chips we didn’t wait too late for our piping hot meals to arrive. Unfortunately the first fish bite contained bones, luckily the rest didn’t and the quality and quantity were excellent for both meals. There is a massive car park and seating outside and apparently th Sunday lunches are excellent and well priced. Would we go back, yes, just a few niggles or personal taste

Generally this hotel was OK but.....I needed to get up early because I start work at 7.30. Unfortunately there was live entertainment on in the bar. This was so loud that the sound was reverberating up though my bedroom floor. This went on until 10.45pm. I initially asked that the volume could be lowered, which it was, a bit, but I'm sure that the entertainer kept tweaking up the volume until it was as loud as ever. Not impressed.

Booked a table and when we arrived, there wasn't a table available. We were eventually seated after 15 minutes. Then waited another 15 minutes to take our order. Ordered off the 2 course menu and were told to order our desserts at the end. Staff were rushing all over and kept apologising to customers so obviously other people were complaining. Waited 45 minutes for the food. When mine arrived, sent the cottage pie back as all they had done was put grated cheese on top and wasn't even melted or grilled. Waited another 5 minutes and when it came back, they literally had stuck it in the microwave so was nuclear. To top it off, ordered our desserts for them to come back a few minutes to say there was nothing left. By this point, we all had enough and got up. We were in there a total of 2 hours and only managed to get 1 course. Absolutely shocking experience and won't be going back anytime soon.

We are a couple of Mackem expats living in Canada so know this location well. Stayed for 1 night mid August 2019 - great welcome from the owner - room recently all renovated, lovely bathroom and even a view over the sea. Ate lunch - great value for mince and dumplings and a very tasty curry. Breakfast was outstanding with the best black pudding (Scottish of course!) of our entire trip from Canada which involved 3 weeks of hotel breakfasts at 9 locations. Live entertainment in the lounge by Rhythm Emission on the night of our stay was an enjoyable added bonus and was over by 11pm so no worries about noise in the room overnight. Have read many negative reviews from locals(?) about prices and quality of food etc - having travelled from Derbyshire to Scotland we found the food and prices to be extremely competitive - the locals need to get out more often! Would not hesitate to stay here again.

Had stayed at Marsden Inn before but not tried Sunday dinner there for years-gave it a go few weeks ago-excellent. Welcoming and friendly service that was just right timing from ordering to receiving and was generous portion to say least! I will have to ask for a small meal next time! It was cooked to perfection and you could tell it was actually “cooked” not just reheated in the microwave. We told the waitress it was the best Sunday roast dinner we’d had at a pub in a very long time-and it definately was.

We as a family booked in June 2017 a Christmas meal at the Marsden Inn, so there was plenty of time to get organised they even knew what each person was having to eat?? We arrived at 2pm to be greeted by a couple leaving saying there’s no food we took it as a joke, but we were soon to find out, we should have believed them, we where taken to our table at 2.30 with no Christmas cheer or welcome, on sitting down it was noticeable that a lot of tables where empty and the people who where there complaining, after waiting 3/4 of an hour we had to ask when the starters would come as no one at all came to the table to let us know what was happening after another 15 minutes four prawn cocktail starters which was a I’m sure a joke it came with lots of lettuce leaves and two if you could find them small prawns with the smallest drop of sauce, but also a large prawn mixed in with it which was uncooked and that was all they had between 18 of us to give, then the alarm bells rang as the large prawn mixed in, was blue not cooked at all, which was absolutely dangerous as the rest of Christmas could have been spent in hospital if eaten. We noticed other tables where also shouting and complaining about what they had received RAW prawns some just walked out others wanting there money. I told the waitress that you cannot eat raw prawns and her reply was I’m sure it said they where cooked when I took them out of the bag, they where then promptly taken from everyone in the pub. They then offered three dishes they called broth? which was just a bowl of what looked like oats which looked and smelled disgusting a portion of bread was brought over after 25 minutes but could not be eaten as the waiter just sniffing and sneezed over it, then just wiping his nose on his hand And sleeve and placed it down this was In front of us, so want was going on behind the scenes is worrying, so we just all sat again like everyone else until after another 1/2 an hour passed and asked them to clear the table away as no one would come to any table anywhere in the place. There we sat again for another hour until we over heard there was not enough food to feed anyone, when this was questioned they could not or would not confirm to anyone if this was correct , after sitting back down and watching other people going or talking to us about how bad the service and non-edible food was, if they indeed where given anything. They then asked us if we would like our money back which we took and took quickly, we just left watching others also asking for money back. An excuse was offered that the cook had hurt his arm but that doesn’t make up for no food to feed people all the money taken months ahead to pay for it and the non existent dangerous hygiene standards no welcome no table service etc etc. So we would not risk eating there again and others should think about the non existent food hygiene. As for any management to explain, they never materialised obviously avoiding everyone as there was no sign of an apology.

No food left was the message we got when we were offered our money back but no Christmas Day lunch. I've never has such a bad experience at any place. We booked months in advance for a party of 14. When we got there the place looked tired but we're always willing to give a place the benefit of the doubt. After waiting for over an hour and half for our starters none of us attempted to eat them as the standards was shocking. Then after waiting another 30 or so minutes they offered us our money back and we had to ask for an explanation. What a disappointment. No manager on duty and the staff couldn't do anything but look embarrassed. Even after this the manager has made no attempt to apologise. I don't ever put terrible reviews on Tripadvisor but this place should be avoided unless the management is changed.

Room was awesome pity about the food and service. There was 6 of us 4 had starters. 2 creamy garlic mushrooms, which were more like tinned in some sort of paste. No taste of garlic & very oily served with a small t/cake. 2 broth & a roll which was a vegetable soup with a t/cake. Then we had 6 main courses all served with burnt chips, 2 of the meals had cold chicken & peas so sent back then came back warmed in microwave. 2 of the medium steaks were that well done you couldn't cut it and tasted funny. All in all not recommended for food.We then went into the lounge for drinks, Stand at the empty bar while the staff are talking at the other end ignoring you. The place was empty and we spent above £300 on the night we would have expected a better service and a little bit of courtesy for our service. There was no one there when we checked we had to go looking. No one there when we left. It's atrocious how they can treat their guests this way. How the place stays open is beyond me. The meals were delicious, very good value for money and bearing in mind both meals were a fiver each, the plate was loaded. For desert I had the apple crumble and custard, again delicious. The whole meal including 4 drinks was just over £32, which was very reasonable for what we got.The staff were spot on, very attentive, however not overbearing. We picked the Marsden Inn because relatives had said it was good food and the people we were taking out to dinner would enjoy it. It was plain and simple, nothing fancy and not a great deal of choice on the menu, but what we ate was cooked well and I cannot say anything against the food. The menu had scampi and chips and if they had come up in a basket I would not have been surprised, everything was very dated, a decent plate of food but nothing special. I doubt I will be going back there again.

Prebooked 24 hours in advance for the afternoon tea with a twist having heard about it on the North East Foodies Facebook page...it isn't well advertised yet by the Marsden Inn. There is limited availability. We arrived early and were well looked after by the staff (Leanne and Brooke) whilst our table was set up. We took advantage of the unlimited tea / coffee allowance while we waited. The coffee was fresh, hot and delicious. The afternoon tea was amazing, best I've had. The table is set out like a picnic with a small picnic bench sitting on one half. Two orange juices in mini milk bottles were already in place....and then the food began to arrive and just kept coming!!! A demi tasse of soup with bread, Small portion of scampi and delicious chips, cheese, pickled onions, finger sandwiches and fresh bread, quiche with small salad, sausage rolls, crisps, rock cakes, lemon meringue pie, chocolate fudge cake, fruit and cheese scones...I'm sure I've missed some out!!! Other customers were so jealous :-). Anyway, it was really lovely and we took home the remainder boxed up at the end. The staff were so nice! Leanne even stayed behind after her shift to show us around the place as it has recently been refurbished (lovely looking rooms by the way). The outside of this place really doesn't do it justice. Inside is clean and the staff clearly take pride in their work. We also had a nosey at other foods being brought out...the portions are big and prices very good. Highly recommend, home from home. We will be back and also are thinking about staying over. Great location. The outside does need work though.

One of my sons, one of my daughters, their partners and five of our grandchildren joined my wife and I for a lovely impromptu family occasion. We rang at 11am and booked it for 2pm. Short notice for a sizeable party, but no problem for this popular restaurant. Between us we had every choice on the menu for Sunday lunch, (beef, lamb, pork and turkey) and all were delicious, beautifully cooked and the vegetables were piping hot. Children's portions were available for the kids and we all took advantage of the very tempting puddings. The friendly, efficient staff create a relaxed atmosphere which led to a wonderful dining experience, which I am sure we will all want to repeat in the very near future.

Four of us went to the Marsden Inn today for their afternoon tea with a twist. It was beautiful and none of the group had any complaints. One of the party was a diabetic and the chef was made aware in advance and did his upmost to accommodate. We had soup, scampi and chips, 3 lots of different sandwiches, crisps, quiche, cheese scone and cheese & pickles. Then the sweets were rock buns, fruit scone and a whacking big slice of chocolate cake. There's unlimited tea and coffee of you can manage to fit it all in. I love afternoon tea and sometimes I have a "sweet" overload but the savoury made it just right. We will certainly go back . well done to the Marsden Inn!

We stayed here for one night. We were unfortunately immediately disappointed by the rude receptionist who checked us in. I'd already put my card details into late rooms when booking, payment was supposed to be 'on arrival' but two days before check in the payment was pending. Receptionist asked for a card payment when I arrived saying I 'hadn't paid' so I questioned why. I showed her my bank account as I was obviously concerned about being charged twice. She didn't seem to know the process or care why I had a payment pending to her hotel, nor care about the fact that my available balance would now go down by twice the amount. MAKE SURE U HAVE TWICE THE COST OF THE ROOM IN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT as you'll be effectively charged twice before one payment refunds days later! I'm actually still waiting for the refund 2 days after check in so fingers crossed I get it! If she could have reassured me about this or explained instead of me having to google it id have appreciated! This had already ruined our view of the hotel but other than this, room was really nice and comfortable. The only other down side was the noise of the door slamming as our room was near the main door which leads to the rooms. Not a major problem. Location was great and taxi service behind the hotel were great to ship us around! Very friendly. Perhaps the reception staff at the hotel can get some tips!

This hotel is a cut above the rest in this area.Having family in South Shields I began staying here in 2011 & loved it but unfortunately a couple of years ago it got taken over & went down hill therefore I began to stay at another hotel close by which was tired & dated so decided to look for alternative accommodation. To my delight i came across The Marsden Inns new website and seen it was again under new management and rooms had undergone a full refurbishment and are now booked and a B& B basis.Today I've returned from a 3night stay here & felt i needed to write a review straight away!On arrival I was checked in by a kind lady called Zoe who took us to our room & kindly offered to help carry our bags. Keys are now electronic cards & you have to go through an electronically locked door system which separates the bar from the rooms to gain access which makes it feel much safer. The room was not only refurbished in design but also in structure too. No expense has been spared. All rooms are decorated in a modern contemporary design & are all ensuite. We stayed in room 4. The bathroom was impressive with a brand new bathroom suite. It had a good sized bath with a nice powerful over head shower & the sink built into the unit which gave plenty of room for belongings & doing hair/make up. Under this unit was blue LED lighting which illuminated the bathroom for a nice relaxing bath! The room itself was a delight to walk into. It was a spacious size, fresh cosy & welcoming. This has been tastefully decorated. With a big comfy double bed & 4 plump pillows. A desk with lamp, coffee station & plugs to charge devices (also have plugs underneath each bedside unit) & 2 X mirror units one full length & one cosmetic. To add a nice touch to the room was what I call a sherlock chair/arm chair so if you wanted to sit and read or relax and watch TV you didn't have to sit in bed you could sit in this chair which was comfortable. There was a unit to hang you're clothes with a few hangers and plenty of shelf space in this and underneath to store cabin size bags helping to keep the room Uncluttered and tidy. A good sized TV on the wall with free view and an impressive sound system on this as we found out when watching a film on our last night. Rooms cleaned daily: bins emptied hoovered & used towels replaced with fresh ones.Bar & restaurant: new menu excellently priced great food. The breakfast was fantastic on all 3 mornings with my 5 yr old being given a choice of cereals frostie & coco poos being his favourite. My self and my 9 yr old daughter opted for the full English. These were freshly made to order and impressive. Served with toast a variety of jam, butter, marmalade & fresh apple or orange juice & a pot of tea or coffee you were given the works, 2 off everything & all good quality food. We were given the option to add or leave out mushrooms, hash browns, black pudding etc and each morning myself and my daughters breakfasts were bought out with the correct order as she didn't like mushrooms me blackpudding. After seeing what great breakfasts these were on the final morning my dad who lives in South shields even joined us and had a breakfast himself. The staff can not do enough for you. The transformation in this place is incredible & think everybody who passes through South Shields whether it be for a place to stay or a drink & a bite to eat would be missing out if they didn't come & see this place for itself. It's location is fantastic with some Seaview rooms & less than a 5 min stroll down to the sea. I will never stay anywhere other than here again and having looked around other rooms here no matter which room you have you will be pleased.Missing it already.

Service usually good although sometimes there's a bit of a wait, although I don't mind when the food is fresh. Menu sometimes has items unavailable, but not too much of a problem either, and there's always a blackboard too except on Sundays. Food always really good quality and usually more than I can fit in! 5 of us went on this particular, 3 adults and 2 bigger teenage lads, and we thought we'd order a sharing platter starter as we had had it before and it was very substantial for 3 so thought it might be a nice little appetizer that wouldn't spoil our main meal. When it came out it had been increased in size to serve 5 people (price remained the same) and we couldn't manage out main after all! Food was beautiful, fresh and tasty

We called in as part of a walking group, prebooked a table which staff were very good about. Sunday dinner - choices good, 4/5 starters all around £3-£4, 5 or 6 Main choices including a veggie alternative all £4.99 and 4-5 desserts, all sounding delicious, around £3-£4. Staff are friendly locals, it was busy when we arrived after our walk, but thinned out quite quickly after 3pm. Judging by this it's obviously popular.Despite living in Shields most of my life, I think this was the first time I've ever eaten there and wasn't disappointed. It was good old fashioned, no frills home cooked dinner. Everyone enjoyed their meals, a variety of beef, pork or turkey, veggie and the mince dumpling, and the fellas enjoyed their puds too!

Thought we would give the restaurant a try as we were getting picked up from there early evening to attend another function elsewhere.I ordered the gammon steak, the waitress came out to say that there wasn't any gammon, as don't like egg asked if I could have mushrooms and tomatoes, husband ordered mixed grill. When the meals arrived my gammon steak was more fat than meat infact the 4oz gammon that was on my husbands plate was a better quality piece. I called the waitress over after checking with the chef she returned to say no more gammon left she was reduced the cost of the meal. After checking the menu we realised that there was no black pudding and egg and the husbands mixed grill. Went to bar to pay for the meals the waitress was very apologetic and took money off our meals. That was very nice of her but when you go out for your evening meal you except to have an enjoyable meal.Certainly won't be returning for food, no wonder the fountain inn down the road is consistently busy with diners. My opinion is take your business elsewhere!

Having not eaten at the Marsden Inn since it had changed hands we decided to venture over for a change being local residents. On trying to order our drinks there was no draught strongbow left and no soft drinks on the pump either with large 3 litre bottles of pop racked up behind the bar, which was half flat when served. We felt sorry for the poor girl who had innocently told us that unfortunately they had run out and she swiftly got a gob full from the manager. We couldn't avert our ears from the level he was shouting at her "I've told you not to tell people we've run out. I've told you to tell people the brewery have made a mistake with out delivery. Get it right next time, we can't keep telling people we've run out."Thinking it could be a little blip we naively ordered Sunday dinner. When it arrived I actually wanted to laugh. Soggy frozen veg which had been overcooked; carrots, peas, mashed swede. No roasties or stuffing, which were advertised as to accompany the meal. The mash had clearly been mashed with a blender of some kind as it was a puree with lumps and had way too much white pepper in it making it inedible. The Yorkshire puddings were soggy, burnt and seeping with oil. The only part which was half edible was the meat, however it was clearly a cheap cut covered in fat, which hadn't been cooked slowly to render the fat. When asked if everything was ok, we tried to point out some of the things to the staff and were told 'Well were short of ingredients, there's been a problem with the delivery and this is what we have left." at 1pm on a Sunday I feel sorry for the poor customers who arrived near the end of service. We swiftly left. After twice hearing that their downfall is through a brewery and delivery service I tried to contact the manager through facebook when we got home. I got no reply and was deleted and blocked off their page...nice. Seems a shame when there are now an abundance of pubs in the Marsden area serving good food he'd rather 'delete' locals rather than trying to improve. They keep advertising that they're renovating the bedrooms, with no drink and crap food the rooms will swiftly remain empty. Such a shame.

It's been a while since we tried out a new pub for our pub lunch and have been dining locally in pubs we've been to many times before but as we were in the South Shields area this week, we thought we'd try out the Marsden Inn. The place looked nice as we entered the main door and went into the restuarant. It sort of went downhill from there. We ordered our drinks from the bar and our drink was off at the pump. No big problem there (I hadn't read any reviews before going to this pub so obviously it was a recurring problem with not being able to get drinks ordered). Anyway, we weren't that fussy so ordered another drink.Went to our table to look over the menu which was quite reasonable in choice and price and returned to the bar where there was one lady taking orders, serving drinks and waitressing. She wasn't the happiest of souls and I could see why but that doesn't help customer service one bit. Anyway, eventually ordered our meal and when they arrived, they were very nice indeed. We decided to both have apple pie and cream so eventually when the lady was free for a second I went to the bar to order the said apple pie and cream. We were told that there was only one apple pie left. Now, unless there was a run on apple pie and cream between 12:00 and the time we ordered at 12:30, by the 4 people that were there before us, then I think the place needs a shake up somewhere. More staff to serve customers, a better food ordering system so you don't run out of food so early in the day and someone to look after the pumps. Unfortunately we won't be returning here because the food we had was lovely but we are the exact sort of people these sort of places need to keep going these days. Long gone are the days where pubs survive on the regular drinkers and if they are going to serve food, make sure that not only the food is good but the complete dining experience is good. That way you will get returning customers who will tell their friends how good a place is.

Our order 2steaks,mince&dumplings& sauage & mash the lady came back no mince&dumplings so chicken was ordered the lady returned to say no chicken so scampi was ordered she then returned again to tell us there was no mash potatoe !!!!!! So after starting off with flat lemonade & coke & most of the food on the menu not being available we left . If you want food do not try here very poor .

A friend asked me to find her a suitable place to stay in South Shields at a reasonable price.I visited this Inn and was shown the accommodation above the Pub and could not believe my eyes how poor the place was at the sleeping level!I was told by a member of Staff that the place was undergoing renovation to its Plumbing in the rooms. Obviously I turned my back and ran for cover!!"The problem with weekends?" Staff said. "oh, it's the noise from our entertainment from about TEN"!!

This pub is sliding on a downward path and it has been since Maureen and Steve left this has been my local for over 20 years. And I have never seen it in the state it is at the moment. Obviously the manager in charge at the moment just doesn't have a clue how to run a pub. A pub with no beer and no customers and no one seems to give a fig.It is such a shame that a once brilliant local has now become a joke. It won't be long before the brewery closes This once brilliant pub.I am absolutely disgusted that this has been allowed to happen.I think a letter to the brewery is forthcoming just to vent my utter disgust with the current situation.

Visited on a Saturday afternoon more than once, the food here is all home made and cooked to perfection by an amazing and friendly chef. The food is also excellent value for money. Will return again and again! Only complaint would be the price of the wine, they would benefit from a cheap and cheerful house wine option. Can't fault the food though, everything I've had here has been absolutely delicious!

Our intention was to walk on the beach but first we decided to have a toilet stop, drink and a bite to eat. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the very reasonably priced menu; cheap and cheerful scampi, gammon & egg, nothing haute cuisine but nevetheless warming, tasty and very inexpensive. Very nice homemade chips. Hardly anybody in but who cares?Landlady very helpful and welcoming.

The best advice I would give to anyone thinking of eating here is walk on by and save yourself the pain of disappointment. This used to be a lovely pub with a cracking menu, but now it's dire. We arrived for lunch the Sunday before Christmas, and there was no Turkey on the menu! I opted for a beef roast and it came with 4 boiled potatoes, 2 roasties , carrots, sweet garden peas, and a lump of watery cauliflower the size of a walnut! My plate was half empty. There was no mash potato, or Swede, or anything tasty. The meat was out of a packet. And the peas were vile. My partner ordered mince and dumplings, and he needed a chainsaw to cut through it. There was only one choice of pudding on the blackboard so we gave it a miss. We left hungry and went to Hillheads farm for coffee and pie! I think whoever is in charge of catering needs to eat out and see what competitors are offering at a better price! It's such a shame as the waitresses are lovely. Poor, poor, poor

I went for a birthday meal here because a friend recommended it. I was very disappointed. I ordered lasagne, only to be told that it was off the menu and had been for weeks!!!. I then ordered mince and dumplings which was dry and tasteless. The mince was reasonably OK but the dumpling was hard, dry and the cheese and leek advertised could not be detected. It was just a hard lump of something that I could not identify. I did eat it because my family were happy with theirs. They did think that it was just alright. I certainly would not recommend this pub and would not go back even though one of the staff was trying her best to make our meal more enjoyable. It is strange that some reviews on the establishment are fantastic and some not??? Mine is not!!!

Wonderful place, it's our local and I couldn't think of a better place for a quiet chilled out drink, game of pool and a bit of food. The restaurant side is pretty pricey but the quality of the food is great. The manager is a bit of a misery, we've been in about 30+ times to this date and he's never said hi once, considering how much money we spend in this establishment a little bit of acknowledgment would be nice.Aside from this, would still go for as long as I live here. Visited this hostelry for a reunion, and it was a great night. The offer advertised was for two steak meals with all the trimmings and a quality bottle of wine for £20, too good to be true. The sirloin steak was an above average portion and cooked to order with tomato. mushroom and fabulous onion rings, The wine was red white and rose, the white was Hardy's and of a good quality, the red and rose were of similar quality and the red Merlot went down a treat. They offered two desserts for £5 and the portions were above average. The serving of Apple pie was to much for some. The staff were delightful and coped very well with 19 former colleagues having a great time. will definitely return.

I was here in April last year and had a beautiful Belly Pork main course and it was with some excitement that I saw it on the menu again. Ordered it straight away with potatoes while step son went for the Belly Pork with chips. Wife went for the quiche with salad all priced at £4.50 on the specials board. On the plus note the chips were beautiful and son was greeted with a veritable mound where as I exchanged chips for potatoes and recieved 4 new potatoes. Belly pork instead of being beautifully tender with great crackling was rock hard and looked like it had been thrown in a hot oven and left. Wife recieved a 2 inch square piece of plain quiche which was not even very nice. All in all place has rapidly went downhill and I for one will not return until they find a chef who can actually cook. As these dishes were on the managers specials board I shudder to think of the standard of dishes on the regular menu. Do yourself a favour and eat elsewhere.

We had lunches there two or three times in the past, during the week and at weekends, and it was always busy. The food was good, not great, but good enough for an informal, filling, traditional pub meal. This time, although the service was good and food prepared ok (quantity does not equate to quality) and notwithstanding my that 'medium-rare' steak was _very_ rare, the meals were uninspiring to boring. The restaurant was quiet with very few customers. Others in my party, elderly parents, liked the white wine, but they were out of stock of any dry red... in a pub?!?I got the impression the Marsden Inn was suffering from some internal issues... staff doing their best, but... out of dry red wine, some 'specials' unavailable and the chef not knowing the difference between a rare and medium-rare steak (which, admittedly, most pub chefs can't get right). It is a very competitive market now. There are several much better places for meals nearby (The Rattler in South Shields for one). My feeling is the management needs to address some basic issues if the want to attract customers. Shame, really, for such a good location and otherwise nice pub.
