Not good I'm afraid! Nearly 2 hrs wait for very poor food. Lots of room for improvement. The show at The Customs House, 'Dracula the Travesty ', was great though!

I went to the restaurant with my mother on what was a very busy day. No tables were available, as they were reserved.A fantastic waitress called Fiona found us a table. We both had the mushroom soup and warm roll, which was delicious. Whilst eating lunch I observed Fiona speeding round the restaurant, organising things with a smile on her face. Great food and customer service, we will return.

Five of us had a table booked for one o'clock finally got our meal at quarter to two. Firstly the food was good apart from the Yorkshire puddings which were apparently like cardboard and the lamb a bit stringy. I asked for a gluten free lamb dinner but when it was brought out it looked the same as everybody else's, so when I asked it was taken away and a new one appeared with no Yorkshire and an apology. The atmosphere isn't great to start with but 3 times when we were there there was a hi De hi type announcement about a show starting at a volume that could've been heard in north shields across the river ! We like to try new venues for Sunday lunch but we won't be going back to this place.

Popped in for some lunch at the Bistro at 1.30pm. When we asked for the 'afternoon tea' as described on the menu we were told they probably couldn't make it and usually people booked it in advance. What? It consisted of a pot of tea, some sandwiches and scones/cakes (presumably pre-made/bought). You need to pre-book to effectively have a sandwich made for you???!!! There were plenty of people being served a variety of food but also spare tables/seats. I asked what other food was available and was told ''I'm not sure, it's really busy, IlI' ask if anything is available'. Obviously didntdhang around for a further response. Woeful.

When finely arrived it was stone cold and unedible to say the least...paid for our drinks and left never to return. My parents in their 80s were very disappointed and angry 😠

Visited here for a pre-ballet tea as a treat for me and my daughter from my mum. We arrived and were quickly served our drinks. We ordered from a small set menu, potato skins and 1 pork and 2 tarragon chicken. The potato skins were nice although an ant would have complained at the size of the garlic sauce, but that is literally the only positive about our meal. The pork was 90% fat, frozen Yorkshire pudding and thin greasy gravy. The chicken was so dry and over cooked we could have used them as leather shoes, the sauce was tasteless and had formed a skin and the veg was boring and cold. We complained to the waitress, who was friendly but seemed surprised at our complaints and slightly defensive. The manager then came over and apologised profusely, stating he hadn’t been here long and he is hoping to turn the place around. He was incredibly nice and refunded us the whole bill. Food was awful as was the ambiance but we have been assured this will change. Bravi is a hard act to follow so here’s hoping.

No hot food available just sandwiches and jacket potatoes. Myself and the wife and two kids have just had to pay £28 for food and drinks. I don't like feeling like I have been shafted up the rear but didn't have time to go elsewhere. Came here last year and they had homemade pie and quiche. They complain how they may have to shut the customs house which is a shame when it has some great shows, but if they can't even run a little kitchen what hope do they have!! Won't be back here again that's for sure 👎😡

We recently booked a table prior to the Ann Breen concert and we ordered the two course early evening meal. The staff were very friendly and two of us enjoyed a very nice and well made cocktail. However, the size of the portions for both the starter and the main course were too small. The quality of the food was very good- no complaints there- but there should have been more on each plate, and because of this, the meals weren't value for money.

Booked a meal prior to the Tenors concert. Its been sometime since we had dinner at Customs House, but have on many occasions had a snack lunch with no complaints. First of all the Green Room could do with a lick of paint - starting to look very dowdy. There was a choice of three starters - we chose black pudding which came with a few pieces of burnt pancetta and was covered in balsamic vinegar! The black pudding was fatty and overdone - not a good start. Worse was to come! My husband's vegetable noodles were not fit for human consumption - the sauce was dreadful and after two spoonfuls he left it. I am not a fan of beefburgers, however, there was nothing suitable for me on the menu and when I ordered I asked for the bread bun to be removed and enquired whether it was served with salad or veg - the waitress replied that she'd see what she could do! The meal was served with "home made" chips a few leaves of wilted lettuce - no other salad ingredient or dressing - the beefburger was tasteless. I asked for vinegar for the chips and was eventually handed a plastic bottle with just enough vinegar for my needs. After the second taste of the beefburger, I, like my husband left it, and we shared the "home made" chips. We were initially asked by a waitress if all was ok - neither of us replied, as we had not had time to taste the food. She returned again and this time she could see our full plates and we told her how disgusting it was. She replied she'd let the kitchen know, but did not return. The plates were cleared away and we were asked if we'd like dessert and replied "no, just the bill". The timing of our meal was 5.30pm. We have on many occasions eaten at various restaurants from their early bird menu, many being much higher class than the Green Room and for as little as £7.95 for two courses. Their charge of £12.95 for two courses in the early evening is nothing short of highway robbery!. We live near a very high class hotel/restaurant and their early bird menu is £12.95 and in comparison is quite a banquet - who do The Green Room think they are? The bill for £35 was extremely painful and when we were again asked if all had been well, I had to tell her how disgusted we were with the whole experience. She asked if we'd like to have another meal which we refused and quite surprisingly she deleted the cost of our meals from the bill and we were only charged for the drinks. That was a massive relief, but we'd much rather have enjoyed a good meal and paid the bill. As it stands we will never return to the Green Room.

For years the venue has provided a reasonably priced 2 course lunch in conjunction with an early afternoon film. Recently, the price has gradually crept up, and the standard of what had been an exceptional meal deal had started to go down. At times the fish portions have been undersized, for example, for the price paid. This season they have started to present mains as unbalanced dishes, for example either without any vegetable component or without any carbohydrate component offered. I can understand why their previous practice of serving vegetables in huge dishes might be wasteful, but, even if plated, they should be a component of the main meal. If the lunches continue to lack flair, then long established customers will be voting with their feet.

Problems trying to book a table before show at The Customs House, still waiting for them to call back....should have been a warning. On arrival actual menu was in our opinion inferior to "sample" menu on website. Starters were disappointing and somewhat laciking in presentation. We all went with the same main course and thought that portion was small. Desert was good but this did not make amends for previous courses. Waitress was very pleasant and worked hard but this was definitely a first and last visit.

Regularly changing menu with a choice of 4 items per course. We had black pudding with pancetta in a sauce to start with and our dining partner had potatoes skins with garlic mayonnaise and sweet chilli dips. For mains we had steak and ale pie, which came in an individual dish with a large puff pastry top. Our dining partner had turkey breast. The meals were served with a separate dish of vegetables, which included; sliced new potatoes with their skins, broccoli, carrots, peas and sweetcorn. The 2 courses priced at £12.95. Desserts were £3.50 or £4.00 for cheese and biscuits. Wines are way overpriced for new world stuff. You could buy 3 or 4 bottles for what is being charged for 1. Same with beers. Guinness at £4.50 is almost double what you would expect to pay. I can understand the need to gain as much funding as possible but this, particularly in a relatively depressed area of the country, needs to be balanced with what is perceived to be Value For Money.

Had two course lunch. Waitress said it was vegetable soup, should be renamed 'barley soup' as only 1 piece of potato and 2 pieces of carrot swimming in copious amounts of barley. No taste whatsoever. Main was steak and ale pie with veg, veg absolutely tasteless, pie the same, no ale detected at all! Lovely waiting staff, however they don't ask how your meal is during or after, so no opportunity to give feedback without sounding picky.

All our party agreed that they had a wonderful if non-pretentious meal with everything freshly cooked to perfection, hot and really tasty.. Staff were really welcoming and could not do enough to ensure our party had a Great Day. Meals are reasonably priced, and portion sizes good. Drinks are also reasonably priced and selection of house wines well chosen and very quaff-able.A number in our party had not been here before, but all said they would be back. With good food, drink, company and attentive friendly efficient service with river views and the North Sea Ferry and a Cruise ship to look at while you enjoyed your lunch what more could you want ?.

We booked a film at the customs house and decided to try out the "green room" first. Big mistake. I couldn't believe how poor the food was. Both of our starters were minuscule. The potato skins were rather black and the black pudding cut too thinly. We had both ordered the same main meal and found it over salted and the pastry rock hard, the minute helping of meat was almost black. We had to wait too long for the accompanying vegetables and the bisto gravy which was delivered half way through the meal. I informed the waitress who apologised and said I wasn't the only one to complain that evening. This was our first and definitely the last visit for us both which is annoying as we previously read positive reviews and were anticipating a good all round experience.

OK, so it’s mainly a pre-theatre restaurant, because I cannot imagine anyone making a special trip to eat here, therefore it was always going to be limited, but at the same time, it was truly awful. Dreadful slow service; cock-up on the order front with no apology; five minutes between the main course and accompanying unseasoned and boring vegetables – why on earth these place are still trapped in the sliced carrots, boiled potatoes, and cauliflower era god alone knows; lukewarm food (with the same old trick of serving whilst holding a tea-towel to make you think the plates are hot); dreadful fish and on and on.

On arrival to the green room i couldnt help but notice that although "quiet" most tables were cluttered with debris and quite tacky. After waiting what seemed an eternity we were finaly greeted by a waitress who appeared from the kitchen "chomping" on something who pointed a cleanish table out to us.My friend ordered the steak and ale pie which when it arrived was well done, flatpiece of pastry with 4 bits of meat and very little gravy. My friend did ask for more gravy when we eventualy managed to catch the attention of the waitress who was obviously still enjoying her lunch alasBy the time the glutenous sed gravy arrived her meal was " tepid" at best.I had the soup and sandwich combo which is good value but once again the soup although nice was also tepid. We swiftly finished our meals and paid ourbill.overall it was a very dissapointing experience and needless to we will not be returning until the food is of the same standard as thr meal the waitress was obviously enjoying.

We sat around the room for 10 minutes and out came the meals for all guests. Everybody enjoyed their meals and there was an excellent selection of vegetables. No complaints from anybody. It was excellent. Pit we could not linger longer because there was another sitting. The sweets were varied and also excellent. My husband works a 3 shift pattern so Sunday is the only day we all get to sit down at the same time for a meal so it is important. We enjoy going out but are usually disappointed with the quality but I can say on this occasion we were very happy with everything. The service was great and very efficient, the surrounding were very relaxed and the food was delicious. Piping hot, plenty of well cooked veg and the meat was well cooked. I couldn't have asked for more and will def be returning. The only issue I had was with the desserts I do think they could offer the kids a small portion of icecream in with their meal as they don't do a childrens portion and at £3.45 it was a bit expensive.

We paid our first visit to the Customs House on Saturday to see a Patsy Cline tribute show. When I booked the tickets I asked if there was anywhere nearby to eat at before the show, and was put through to the Geeen Room Restaurant. I booked for 6.0pm but in retrospect 6.30pm would have been enough time to eat before a show that starts at 7.45pm!The Green Room is also a coffee shop/bistro and the restaurant is at the rear of the room. We were seated behind a screen and at 6.0pm we were the only diners, although the 'Bistro' was pretty busy. By the time we left the restaurant was full, so it would appear to be popular with locals. We had the two course early bird menu at £11.95 ( eat before 7.0pm). I had a smoked haddock and prawn risotto stater and hubby had the pate. The risotto was tasty but had only three very small prawns and two bits of flaked haddock. The pate was a more substantial starter and came with salad and toast. My husband had Newcastle Brown Ale steak pie and it was full of juicy steak under a light flakey pastry crust. I had a chicken dish which sounded better on the menu than it actually was (can't remember what it was called). The meals were accompanied by a dish containing two potatoes each and a small amount of al dente mixed veg, mainly mangetout, green beans and carrot. Once again, hubby's meal was much better than mine! I had asked for a jug of iced water and this was provided at no cost. The meals were washed down with a pint of Tetley's and a pot of tea before we retreated to the bar. The bill was just short of £29.00. To be honest, South Shields is the curry capital of the North East and I think on another occasion we would visit a curry house before our visit to the theatre. The Green Room is a very convenient place to eat when visiting the Customs House, but I know there are better eateries in the area.Deaconblue

Truly truly appauling. Have never eaten here before and so thought we would try it to see if it was any good . Positive start with friendly helpful staff. Ordered a smash burger and chips. Then the wait , of at least thirty minutes for luke warm cheap bookers burgers smothered in as much cheap bookers melting cheese sauce that you could not see what they were. Definitely only good for when you are either 1. So drunk you don't care what it tastes like or 2. When you are so hungry you'll eat anything because it's food.
