Came to play some pool and have something light to eat. The venue was very busy when I arrived however didn’t have to wait long to be served a cold crisp desperadoes with a fresh cut lime. Went to play some pool for a little bit and have a browse through the menu which has a wide range of options, I went for the cheesy chips and halloumi which didn’t take long to come and were both stunning. The atmosphere was great in there, they even showed the football and had a great playlist on. Staff were very friendly, will definitely be coming back whenever I can

Me and some friends where let down by a restaurant reservation, so I called The Marquis after hearing a recommendation from a friend and they accommodated our needs in short notice. When we arrived, the staff where very welcoming and accommodating, and the customers where a great crowd. The food was excellent, specifically the burgers and steaks, which where very tasty and fresh. And the draft selections where varied which gave us a good amount of choice when drinking. We asked the barman if we could select a specific genre of music and he was more than happy to do so. The pub itself is beautiful, with a beautiful beer garden and a huge marquee. Overslll just a fab experience, will be returning!

A lovely old pub with all the usual Colchester history, cosy character and tudor beams etc, but only go for a drink. Don’t plan to eat here. It appears the food situation has not improved since the last one star review 2 months ago. One of my work colleagues contacted this pub to book in advance for a lunchtime meal for a small group of us. They said they don’t take bookings. It’s usually busy with students due to being located near 2 colleges, but half term, so quieter. We got a table. Went to the bar to order food - they’d run out completely of chicken and tuna. It was 12.30 on a Tuesday during college holidays! (not a weekend or Christmas). It’s also not busy tourist season. We were told that if we did order, it would be a minimum of a 20 minute wait for food as all the tables in the bar area were already waiting for food orders. There must’ve been at least 12+ people, so it didn’t look hopeful. A sign at the bar would’ve been helpful if food was both limited and delayed. Our group doesn’t go out for meals much - we were on our work lunch hour, so had a deadline. We’d wasted too much time, so had no choice but to leave without ordering anything, not even drinks. One of our team had driven 45 minutes from Canvey Island - solely for this group meal… of nothing (we tried Trotters nearby but it was closed). Maybe it’s a staffing issue, but even if they’re short of a chef, stock taking and staff rotas are basic requirements. So is ordering according to previous consumption patterns. Whilst fresh chicken may run out, tuna is tinned and long life. It’s not difficult to keep extra in stock. Surely a restaurant should check at the end of each service what is low stock - and replenish in time for the next food service anything urgent. Terrible business skills. Had they of taken an advanced booking and food order, they wouldn’t of lost £90+ today from us. If they can’t manage food, they should temporarily suspend it until they can. Their processes need a serious overhaul.

Christmas table booked for a large group well in advance for a Christmas lunch, they knew we were coming so it wasn’t a surprise. Food came out so slowly literally one and half persons trying to deliver 20 plus courses. The mains came out so infrequently it became a Christmas joke. When the beef and Turkey mains finally arrived bit by bit everything was just dried and burnt to a crisp. We had a forensic expert try to identify a pig In blanket. So small and burnt to nothing, WTAF.. Everything on the plate just inedible. Couldn’t even get a fork in a stuffing ball it was so solid . Nelson fired it at The French Navy, then the Marquis served it . The group ate it because we are English and accept overpriced well below standard food. The kitchen and managers should be ashamed at the quality of food served today. Staff tried to hide their blushes with comedy but they knew . These venues deserve to fold and go bust. Shame on you… shame. Go at your peril. Utter disgrace and should be offering a refund

Nice enough bar, characterful building etc. But I found the presence of a CCTV camera watching the urinals in the gents to be more than a bit off putting. And quite likely illegal...

Great looking venue, full of character, so came in for evening meal before going to a show. Menu looked interesting and varied, unlike the beers on offer. Most disappointing to see the only alcohol free beer offered was Hinekan. Why, when there are so many available, to pubs only stock corporate bland rubbish? Supermarkets have a far better selection than most pubs. Opted to go for a normal pint of Adnams Ghostship, an excellent beer. Unfortunately, this was served warm and flat, and although served from a pump labelled Ghost ship, and served in a Ghost ship glass, didn't taste like it and was more like a tepid cup of tea. If a pub can't serve a decent pint, then what's the point? Food was tasty and served in reasonable time. I would have given the pub a minus score, if possible, as they managed to ruin serving a nice beer and have a poor selection, but the great food dragged the score up to a +2.

Was meeting friends here before going to an actual restaurant. Only 1/3 hand pumps working on a Friday night due to cleaning the pipes. No heating (6 degrees outside). Dive bar. Always has been, but at least it used to serve a couple of decent beers. If you are a group of beery drunks or even just the more seasoned elderly drunk, then this place may be just for you. Unless you want warming up of course. (Decided to meet friends elsewhere by the way).

Great pub with lovely garden, but drinks selection has really gone down hill. I enjoy cider and only option available is a unheard of new brand inches which is awful.

I cannot recommend this hotel more highly. The rooms were bright and airy, some with sun catching balconies, or seating areas outside some ground floor rooms. The bathroom was light and clean with wonderful shower. Best of all was the attentiveness of staff, without exception The breakfasts were ample portioned and delicious. We also used the restaurant, which was very good with good choices, and again excellent staff attentiveness.

Considering this Costa is situated in a hospital where typically visitors are not in the best frame of mind, one would expect the service + staff to be tip top..... my disappointment knows no bounds. 5 ppl behind the counter, 0 looking like they were working or appearing to work + when a person finally asked if me + 1 other man were being served it was done with all the enthusiasm of someone waiting for a colonoscopy. I was v thirsty + tired after a day in the hospital otherwise I'd have walked away🤬
