The Victory at Mersea in Colchester

We don’t get out much but had some time to go out and ventured down to Mersea. Thought we treat ourselves to some lunch. Headed to the victory. Our server was nice enough although didn’t seem to know much. We ordered 1 fish and chips 1 brisket burger Garlic bread Cauliflower cheese I asked if the brisket burger was pulled( like pulled beef) Server said it was. When it arrived was just a standard beef burger with the added extra of a sharp piece of plastic with a thick hair running through it. Obviously ruined the meal which at £15.95 Was beyond disappointing and super disgusting. Cauliflower cheese was late to arrive, manger went to the wrong table offering cauliflower fritters. We waved and said we order the cauliflower cheese. Be rudely said “only on Sundays” “only on Sundays” I looked at the menu again and it doesn’t say only on Sundays. It’s with the sides and desserts on the menu! We were compensated £5 off the bill. Over priced, food overrated and management need some training in personal hygiene and customer service!

Excellent atmosphere for a party! Plenty of room, comfy chairs, great staff, beautiful scenery and amble parking. Would visit again.

Visited for lunch on 22 Feb 2023, family now have food poisoning after eating the fish and chips.

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary. The rooms are modern and clean. The staff are very friendly. We had a lovely room with a balcony overlooking the sea. I found the cost of the room very fair. We will recommend to friends and family. The victory is only a very short walk to the parade of shops and is right where the beach is. We ate dinner here, the food is well made and effort was put in to it. The breakfast was also lovely.

I stayed here. Nice enough people, room freezing (it’s Feb) as they turned the heating off but otherwise clean. Usual problems with noise from neighbours telly etc, and I don’t think they had it on super loud. But overall I slept well. Great place to crash. Certainly not a flop house.

Came to The Victory for a day out with the family and we had the most amazing meal, served by super welcoming and accommodating staff🙌🏼 Love that it is dog friendly so we could bring our little pups and the servers were great with them! Will definitely be coming back!

Good food, friendly staff and great location in Mersea

When it was found that our allocated room lacked heating they promptly moved us. I can highly recommend the cooked breakfast, it set us up for the day.

We were visiting family on the Island. So decided this looked good to stay the night. When we got there good carparking. But no one there to greet us at reception so hubby had to go and find someone. We were shown to our room which was supposed to be superior, but wasn't. Very small, but nice bathroom. Bed seemed clean. But the floor needed hoovering. Only 1 chair in the room so after visiting elderly parents we needed to sit and chill in our room, but ended up one of us sitting on a hard seat. We went down later for dinner. Menu not good. So we went for something we thought would be good as right on seafront. Fish n chips!.... Well we eventually got it, but it was refried as the batter was dark brown and saturated with fat, very thin cod!. Chips n peas were nice tho.!. We weren't asked if all ok, lady just took our plates,. So hubby told her it was not nice at all... We never got an apology!. No one came out to say anything. All the waitress saud was... "I didn't cook it"!. But she would let chef know.... 😕 No one came out, no one said bye hope you enjoyed it!.. So we went back to our room.!. Well after a part decent nights sleep, as in our room we could hear loud voices coming from downstairs, which went on until 11pm!. Well we got up for breakfast. Only us and 2 others in room. 1 person serving, we asked for coffee, which we got a smile. Then what did we want for breakfast?.. (well, no menu on table) so we asked... Breakfast came but no coffee!.. Eventually got coffee. Lol.. Breakfast was nice. And view beautiful. Well we packed and no one there to say goodbye. So off we went.... Would we stay here again?... We don't think so!!!... Very disappointed as this was our holiday to visit elderly parents. 😢😢

2 nights - 6 Rooms - Work Christmas weekend. James The Manager made us feel very welcome and was very accommodating. The Food was Lovely. We had Breakast and Dinner each day with a festive Christmas dinner on Saturday night. Travelled with 3 small Children and two dogs and 9 Adults. Very easy relaxing weekend. We chose to stay here for 3 nights as a treat for my husband's birthday. We love to be by the sea/ estuary, and had to be near Colchester zoo where we were visiting. I had requested the room with the best sea view and with a good shower. Room 1 did not disappoint. A dual aspect spacious room with amazing views of the estuary over the boatyard. The bathroom was equally large with a massive deep bath and separate power shower cubicle. An additional heater had been placed in the room in case the radiators didn't provide sufficient heat on what was a cold weekend. We were welcomed by friendly staff who were very attentive and willing to please. We ate there on our first evening and, although rather a limited menu, the chick pea and cauliflower curry was really tasty. As I can't eat spicy curries, I was informed that if it was too hot for me I could choose another main course instead. Nothing seemed too much trouble! Breakfast had a good choice of mains. My husband had a full English each morning, and I had poached eggs with hollandaise sauce and smoked salmon. There was also poached eggs with hollandaise sauce and spinach or with black pudding. Great to have poached eggs as these aren't always offered for hotel breakfasts. Unfortunately, as with so many other hotels and restaurants, only full fat milk, or semi- skimmed is available with coffee and tea. I always have skimmed milk to appreciate the full flavour of the coffee. Other than that, a slow draining shower was resolved quickly. I was concerned about flooding the bathroom floor! Please can housekeeping use some descaler to remove the limescale in the shower cubicle and around the taps and shower head. This is a common issue often neglected in so many hotels where we have stayed, but so important. Thank you to all the staff at the Victory for a relaxing and enjoyable 3 nights stay. A beautiful location for bird watching and walking. We hope to return.

Please note Mersey is a wonderful island to visit. The Victory is in a great location - seafront. Unfortunately breakfast was poor. Chef forget several items for breakfast and Saturday night meals & Sunday lunch not available! 🥲 The bar staff are very friendly and kind. They did their best to make our stay a welcomed one.

Came into The victory after a very long time last month. Very happy to say i was over the moon with the food and service! I forgot to ask for names but a lovely gentleman with his hair tied up served me, and it’s safe to say i will definitely be returning!

We went to Victory today with my partners mother who is elderly and suffering with dementia. Had to wait 25 minutes to get a drink (not a problem as could see they were busy and was told the wait for food was an hour). Got our drinks and menus - once we decided on food - queued again and was then informed that they were no longer taking any food orders and we would need to wait a further 30 minutes and we may be able to order. So asked wouldn’t it be a good idea to inform your bar staff that was the plan. Found the whole experience very frustrating. Then to complete our visit when my wife took her mum to the toilet (described as disabled) the first door is pull open outwards So a member of the public assisted in holding the door then when got to the disabled door which then had to slid open before access was available and was very wobbly and difficult to manoeuvre, then once inside the toilet the toilet seat was broken and the only grab bar was several feet away & you would need an orangutangs reach to use. Toilet was dirty and poorly disability friendly. No support in place to seat or stand to use the toilet facility. In conclusion will not go back to what is advertised as a family pub. If your disabled give it a wide birth.

This is a lovely place to stay,wonderful views,tasty food and friendly staff. My mum and I have a lovely 2 night stay here,the room was a great size and was really clean and had everything we needed.

Although lovely to be next to the water, the pub is very overpriced when it comes to food which isn’t particularly great plus the portion size of the starts and sides are disappointing considering that the nachos literally had just 16 poking out of the guacamole which cost £9! Ridiculous! The wait at the bar was also long considering there was one person in front of me with what seemed like three members of staff serving one customer and then they decided to serve a local even though I was blatantly there first. Come for the views and garden but not the service or food plus expect a long wait for food and drinks. 2 stars offered 1 for views 1 for the garden.

Went here for lunch, the weather was nice so sat outside. Ordered from the lunch set menu, two courses. Food was good and plenty of it but here’s the weird bit. Because we were sitting outside we were told that both courses would come at the same time. This didn’t register at first but to our amazement the main course appeared followed closely by the starters. So instead of a two course lunch we had a main with a starter side dish. I cannot work out why they would do this, we had paid up front, we’re they worried we would eat or starter and run off without eating the main? My best guess is that it saved trips to serve us, the place was almost deserted so they weren’t run off their feet. Perhaps they need to remember that we are the customers and not an inconvenience. Luckily the ones who ordered main and dessert didn’t get their ice cream with their main however we did have to go in to prompt them to bring them.

Booked a table which wasn’t ready when we arrived. Felt like we were intruding when we asked bar staff where we should sit. Decided to cut our loses and sit outside on the picnic benches instead and queued up to order to be told there was a 20Min wait for food and our food could come at any time in any order… food arrived, cold and had to sent back. Poor service without a smile and inedible food. Really grim.

Booked table at 6.30, we were early so sat outside and ordered some drinks that took 20 minutes to come. We were then seated at a table inside that was pretty awful so decided to sit outside. Food arrived at different times and the scampi and calamari were cold so had to send them back.

Waited ages at the bar until we were noticed. The managers were tasting food at a nearby table. When we were finally served the landlady dropped a glass off the bar which smashed around our feet. No apology! We only wanted a cup of tea..earl grey but they had none. Then we were given breakfast tea but with no milk. We felt like we were intruding as all the staff were chatting and laughing with each other. Never going back!

Exceptionally slow service, poor attitude, lack of management and little staff training can be the only excuse. Mediocre food and similar comments for the beer. When we remarked on the slow service, we had shrugged shoulders

Wow how friendly & helpful are the staff. Had a drink before checking in & then shown to our room by a lovely young lady, who then took another drinks order & brought to our room. The view from the private balcony was fabulous. The room was spotless & had all we needed. Had a very comfortable sleep & then breakfast on the patio. Again, excellent service & food. Nothing too much trouble. Will definitely come back!

My wife and I, along with our dog spent a night here, we would have like two, but there was not any availability.The Victory is well presented with plenty of car parking and masses of outside tables. I can imagine it heaving when the weather is nice especially as there is an extensive play and climbing area for children.Our room was in a separate annex to the back of the property. It was small, but adequate. It was certainly nicely decorated and clean. We had sufficient facilities for our stay. The shower was exceptional, very powerful.The breakfast was provided in the main dining room of The Victory. It was plentiful and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We found the food and drinks lovely and there is no criticism at all, excellent.The staff that we met were friendly and helpful.The location of The Victory puts it in very easy walking distances of the waterfront attractions of West Mersea as well as a green space and beach to exercise the dog.I'd recommend The Victory to anyone wanting to stay in West Mersea and it will be our first choice if we ever go back to stay.

Children and dog friendly. Arrived at lunchtime. Both children and dog welcome. Dog waterbowl provided. Swift service hot fresh and tasty food. Visit interrupted by a short sharp shower no problem to move inside. Dog treats offered. Staff very friendly and helpful.

The Victory is in desperate need of refurbishment and outside there is definitely lacking some tlc. The building is trapped in an 80s era decor.However - let’s appreciate how hard the past year has been and hopefully they will be able to recover.Food was pretty good and not expensive. Nice selection of beers and friendly staff.Absolutely lovely location and you can look right out to sea. Overall a very good experience hence the 4 stars.

Delicious burgers. Kind and friendly waters, relaxed atmosphere. Clearly clean and tidy indoors and welcoming decor that still feels modern. Would recommend ❤❤❤❤

We recently stayed and the good points are:Fantastic location opposite 2 of the best seafood restaurants in Mersea IslandClean room with roomy bathroom, plenty of towelsFriendly staffBreakfast included in the room cost - plain but goodTea & coffee supplies in the room with 2 little bottles of water & 2 individual cookie packsLess good points:If you get one of the 2 rooms which open directly off the small carpark, there will be a lot of noise during the night as the pub drinkers smoke and hang out there and when they leave there's a lot of shouting and car door slamming....then more shouted goodbyes and door slamming as the staff leave at the end of the night. The noise would be much less if people were encouraged to smoke in the pub garden around the corner instead of in the car park. There is also no view, you can't really see out of the windows. They need to be heavily shuttered and curtained otherwise anybody passing by could see straight in.Our beds had spongy mattresses and strange crackly plasticated undersheets which popped off in the night along with the flat sheet loosely put on top of them. You might be more comfortable putting one of the extra blankets (thoughtfully supplied in the cupboard) on instead, and making the bed up with that.We would definitely stay here again, but would come prepared with sleeping pills and earplugs, maybe our own sheets too.You can, in the evening, walk 5 minutes to the beach to sit on an upturned boat and watch the sunset with the gulls.

Popped in for a drink ended up staying for something to eat. The staff were really friendly and helpful all in all a really pleasant evening

On the right day, the perfect spot for a beer, overlooking the water.... staff are really helpful and work very hard.

Perfect, the hotel sits right on the seafront over looking the harbour, the location is perfect.Room was clean and tidy, everything we needed was there, pub and restaurant on site so never short of a hearty meal and a drink.Staff are really helpful and were there when you needed them.The location is perfect for going on long walks along some of the most scenic beaches I have seen. If you don’t fancy the pub menu there are a number of local places to eat including a few beach front oyster bars and restaurants. This is a perfect place to go away and relax.

Visited for lunch with friends. We ordered the water melon and Quinoa salad. On being informed there was no feta cheese we opted for parmesan which failed to appear. I found 4 tiny pieces of avocado no bigger than a garden pea. The whole salad was lacking in flavour (were there supposed to be pomegranate too ?) & the menu was over priced for what we had. However, I will award top marks for the baked cheese cake as this had a lovely flavour ! Overall this was not a good experience though, so we will not be returning.

We stayed at the Victory for 2 nights. The website makes all of the rooms look fantastic but the one we stayed in (described as a superior suite, and the most expensive) had an obsured side sea view (not what was shown on the website), was over the kitchens and had a balcony with picnic bench that had an ashtray full of cigarette butts. Alarm bells rang on arrival at the Victory - it wasn't quite what we were expecting given the room rates. I'd called in advance of booking the room to ask about each of the room types - the one we booked did not match the description given over the phone or on the website. The bar manager was very understanding but was only authorised to give a small discount, a drink each and free breakfasts which felt inadequate. Don't get me wrong, the room itself was nice but was definitely not worth what we'd paid and given the price we really didn't expect to be over the kitchens. The staff at the Victory were all very friendly. The veggie breakfast very tasty, lunch was 'ok'. There was no room refresh during our stay (coffee cups not changed, bins not emptied etc). There was no local information, no WiFi code, no safe, no bottled water, no mini fridge etc - this might seem trivial but given the room rate was all something that should have been provided. We felt really let down having paid so much.

I’ve known The Victory for over 30 years as my parents used to live in West Mersea. My daughter and I went on a trip down memory lane and were sadly disappointed with the poor accommodation here. I paid £130 ( breakfast was extra!) for what turned out to be a very basic and small twin bedded room overlooking the car park. The room was spotless and the shower room and shower were spacious and quite well fitted but there were no tissues or extra toiletries one would expect for this price. I was woken up by the refuse collection at 4.50am but had an uncomfortable night because both beds were ridiculously squeaky. Tea and coffee facilities were fine and there was a hairdryer but there was not enough room for an easy chair or dressing table and the tv was far too small for easy viewing. Staff were friendly and polite but seemed unable to help when the WiFi was non existent. All in all this was a very disappointing stay, which was a great pity as we love Mersea and the weather was wonderful throughout our visit.

Friendly welcome. Cheerful servers. Then the food arrived..The chips had been cooked and then kept warm so they were soft, chewy and not hot enough. The Burger must have been deep fried as the fat ran off it as I tried to eat it, forming a pool on the plate. Needless to say I didn’t eat it. So disappointing. I will not be eating there again or recommending it to friends.

We were walking by and saw some empty tables outside, so went in for lunch. All the staff were lovely, smiles all round and quick efficient service. Drinks arrived a couple of minutes after ordering, food was less than 10 minutes (chicken goujons and a vegan salad) and some treats for our dog! Good portion sizes and tasty food, will definitely come back here next time.

Wasn’t particularly busy @ 4pm, there were tables available outside since the sun was shining & very few people were inside. Service time was extremely lengthy, ordered coffee & cake, got the cake after 20+ minutes but no coffee. Managed to eventually get the attention of a server who brought us our drinks. Not sure how much revenue they lost today but saw a couple of tables just get up & leave as there wasn’t anybody supervising outside diners. Food that we saw coming out looked good, can’t say the same for the brownie & melted Ice cream. Guess they were short on staff but you’d think for half term they’d be better organised. Will I visit again? Jury’s still out!

We booked a table for 1pm on bank holiday Monday Outside, the dining area was packed so we assumed we would have some delays we ordered our drinks they took a while to arrive we ordered our food Fish & chips it eventually arrived at 2.30 pm!!1.1/2hrs after we arrived ,a table next to us who arrived after us got their meals before us we were told “sorry they’d got in the wrong order” when it eventually arrived the food was superb as always also my husband ordered a beer & was given a shandy they said they’d replace it but it never arrived! It appears they obviously couldn’t cope with the volume of customers & take away orders also there was a very limited choice of draught beers We will make a return visit as we have always eaten there when in Mersea hoping they were just having a bad day We had eaten breakfast there earlier that day service & food were excellent the Manager told us it was her first day so hopefully she’ll sort out all the problems before our next visit

Very disappointing meal and wouldn't return. Calamari was severely overcooked and the battered fish wasn't nice. Chips were frozen and tasteless.

We visited for food and drinks on a windy Monday in West Mersea. We were greeted by a friendly young man and zapped in using the NHS Track and Trace app. Food was really enjoyable - thank you!

A friend and I were down mersea as was a nice day thought we would stop for a quick drink,had to sign in fine but we had to use same pen as everyone and everyone’s details were there for all to see (data protection) we shouldn’t be using same pen host should be writing details took 10 mins to order drinks 20 more mins to get 2 half’s! Whilst waiting the staff were everywhere and there was nor organisation drinks were being carried with no trays and staff handing them over the staf should let the guest take their own drink not carrying them in hand should be minimal contact! Bar person to tray then guest! The tables should be organised so each server has their own tables to take care of as we were leaving another couple were then told they must wait so the bar can be cleared for them to even order a drink! I think some serious training is needed in the current situation and only one door was being used for entrance and exit to go into the toilet looked at a menu for what I saw coming out on plates the prices are high for what you seem to be getting! Won’t be in a hurry to go back no tables or seats were wiped after people left them I work in the same industry and we wipe down our wooden tables use an iPad for orders and have sections we work ourselves so it’s not jumbled we take our own glasses rack them to get washed!

We arrived at 12 when the pub opened so there was hardly anyone there but it took probably about 15 mins to order food. Another 15 mins or so later, we were told that one of the dishes was not available...we duly ordered something else. Another 15 mins or so later, cutlery was brought out, and another 15 mins or so later, our food finally arrived. Firstly, it was cold sitting outside waiting for so long, and nobody came over to check if we were ok or wanted another drink whilst we were waiting (even though they were nowhere near capacity so should have had the time). Secondly, with hardly anyone else there, it should not have taken anywhere near an hour to get our food (other people who arrived after us, received their orders before us). When the food came, we were really hoping for a satisfying meal to warm us up....what we got was basic 1980's bar food at best but at 2021 prices. The plates were the small oval ones that don't fit a normal adult sized portion on. The chips were sparse skinny fries (even though for the scampi they were meant to be chunky). The smallest dollop of coleslaw I've ever seen. Only 8 small scampi nuggets which was not in any way anough. Burgers were poorly put together with some raw salad in a dry bun. And the replacement melon and quinoa salad had no quinoa, and the melon was barely defrosted. This was all extremely dissapointing for a meal in a pub which states on it's website that it is 'award winning', and who charge award winning prices (roughly £13 for each dish) AND we were told we had to pay up front so couldn't have got any money back, including the up front tip! Thoroughly dissapointing after such a long wait. We will not be returning.

Love this place, the service is great and the views are amazing. They serve the best steak pie I've ever eaten in a pub/restaurant. Their fish and chips is also amazing, wonderful fresh fish. Lovely desserts and very reasonable prices. What more could you ask for

Extremely overpriced. Room was very average, certainly not ‘luxury’. Dusty inside drawers and wardrobe so clothes got dirty. The food in the restaurant was so bad, after having only a mouthful each, we decided to leave. (We paid when we ordered) Looking round at other tables on the way out, it seemed others had the same opinion!!
