We stayed for 2 nights here - we were warmly welcomed by the staff, who helped us with our bags and were friendly on the whole. The room and bed was comfortable, however it was a small room without any decent storage for hanging clothes. Because we had a balcony we kept this open to feel less cramped in the room. The view was enjoyable from the balcony and was a bonus. There was no armchair or additional seat in the room which was shame but obviously the space was very limited. The bathroom was of a good standard and was very clean, the extra shelf and towel rail were useful, but a door hook would be a great addition. We had breakfast which was good enough, the 'Full English' was ok and a good size. Unfortunately the evening meal we had was very disappointing, the menu was limited and there was no options for 'fresh dishes' and the seafood options were not appealing. Service and attention to detail was fairly poor and the restaurant could be so much better.

Made to feel unwelcome and an inconvenience from the start. Manager did everything in her power to dissuade me from dining there, (ended up getting a Chinese takeaway). Young lad behind the bar was great and tried his best to remedy things, but by this point it was pointless. Never again.

Stayed recently over a Friday and Saturday at The Victory. Overall experience was good. Our room was clean and spacious, and the bathroom a very good size. Parking was not an issue and the staff were very friendly. We had breakfast both mornings and our orders were well cooked and didn't take long to arrive. We also ate in the restaurant on both evenings - once again, we enjoyed the meals and 5* for serving them nice and hot. Our only negative was the slightly random hours for the evening meals. They varied on both nights and we did think the kitchen shutting at 7:30/7:45 on a Friday and Saturday night seemed rather early. However, as said, we did enjoy our stay at the Victory and loved West Mersea.

This was an odd one. I've been here a few times over the years but this visit wasn't great. We were a group of 4 adults and 2 children & upon ordering our drinks I can only describe the lad bringing them to the table as rude. He asked who's drink was what in the best 'Kevin & Perry' impression I've ever heard & continued to spill said drink the whole way to the table. He then continued to spill said drink on the table directly in front of a four-year-old & 9-month-old (wipe it up mate, plus the swipe of your hand to dry your hand directly infront of the table was less than necessary). Kimberly & the Manager - you guys had a great attitude & I apologise for the low review, you two were 5/5 & Kimberly engaged with my 9-month-old son & friends 4-year-old daughter. The starters were cold so you removed them from our bill. But then onto mains. Three of us had the Steak - a mistake indeed. Overcooked is an understatement, we left 99% of the meal and called it a day. Meanwhile, football began to play in the indoor seating area (not wise around a kid) and the two young staff members joined in. Not the £185 meal I was expecting. At all.

Awful price gouged food. Nice enough place and staff but the food so far below the price they put up that it can't be anything but price gouging. The menus look really nice and the prices indicate very good quality. Veggie burger for £17.50 and fish and chips for £17.95. It came out suspiciously fast (which isn't an issue on its own) but my partner couldn't finish half the burger because of the taste and the fish and chips were something you'd get from a bad food van in a run down coastal town. Would have a drink there but food was terrible.

Went to this pub/restaurant. The £15 meals listed on this site aren't really true. Main meals are a little more. But the food is decent. If a little more expensive than that. Which isn't a problem. Didn't appear to be any disabled parking. My girlfriend parked in a way to leave herself space to get in her car door. But coming back to the vehicle, it was a bit of a struggle. Even when leaving her Blue Badge in the front window. My girlfriend had a gin and tonic. I had a few drinks then I ordered food. Thought it would be nice to sit outside. Were tons of spaces when we got there, and even when ordering. Wasn't anyone around us. My girlfriend just wanted a starter, but I talked her into both of us having a meal. We weren't looking to save money. I was enjoying my burger meal till someone on the table next door decided to light a cigarette. There seemed initially a lot of smoke coming my way. The guy knew we were eating and it put me off my food. I left my dinner on the table. I think I'd had less then half the burger and only some of the chips. I didn't touch the coleslaw. I felt sick before I even got to that. I haven't suffered something like this in last 20 years. Staff came out and asked if I wanted my plate taken away. 2nd lady then came out and asked if I wanted the pretty much my full plate taken away. Finally a 3rd staff member asked about the situation. She explained other people can be selfish. Food was left on the table when I finished my drink and left. I left having hungry spent around £60 in these premises. I hope they learn from this. My day was ruined by someone selfish.

This was a massive multigenerational large family celebration (15 of us in total) Three birthdays. 80yrs old 60yrs old and a 3 yr old. We ALL stayed for two nights. How can you please people from 3-85 yrs old? The Victory can. Their can do attitude from ALL of their staff was a rare treat in today’s world. Every single mention of a suggestion was actioned immediately. ManagerJames and deputy manager Nicole are very approachable loveable amenable people. Where to start with our experience .. One of our family members became unexpectedly ill. Nicole even provided room service for her DURING the England football match, and caringly catered, at the drop of a hat, for her pescatarian dietary needs. During our stay, the pub had several large groups in different areas of the pub, with massively differing needs. You really had to be in awe, at the professionalism that was demanded, by a well run good humoured crew of brilliant staff. The Victory provides a Well kept, vast beer garden with pretty flowers & well manicured lawns. A very large children’s play area, which is suitable for a big age range. BREAKFAST My goodness. No one goes hungry, we raved about the sausages and none of us had ever tasted such lovely mushrooms. Have you ever raved about the mushrooms in your full English. Please, if you are staying, do take advantage and enjoy one of the best Full English breakfasts you will ever enjoy… thank you James. Babs is a great hostess too, an alround sound member of staff. What a gorgeous smile and lovely lady. We had a hoot with her. If you are passing by, drop in for a lovely waffle coned ice cream of generous portions. Be served by great staff and have a pint, or choose from a well stocked bar range. It was boiling when we stayed, so the lovely chilled latte with speciality syrups went down a treat. The rooms. Probably the best quality sheets I’ve EVER experienced and a lovely comfy bed. The views are superb. Stupendous in fact. My husband and I stayed happily in room 4. Our dog was made most welcome, there are even specialist meals for the pooch, alongside clean water bowls galore dotted around the building/garden. There are lots of things to do and see in pretty West Mersea. You won’t be disappointed to stay for a week. Another thing that happened, was an impromptu Irish folk vocalist group were here staying. My sister and I spent our first ever afternoon singing & sinking a drink. The barmaid was so happy for us all. We were all stunned by this stay and have resolved, to meet here annually as a family. I simply cannot recommend this pub enough.

We don’t get out much but had some time to go out and ventured down to Mersea. Thought we treat ourselves to some lunch. Headed to the victory. Our server was nice enough although didn’t seem to know much. We ordered 1 fish and chips 1 brisket burger Garlic bread Cauliflower cheese I asked if the brisket burger was pulled( like pulled beef) Server said it was. When it arrived was just a standard beef burger with the added extra of a sharp piece of plastic with a thick hair running through it. Obviously ruined the meal which at £15.95 Was beyond disappointing and super disgusting. Cauliflower cheese was late to arrive, manger went to the wrong table offering cauliflower fritters. We waved and said we order the cauliflower cheese. Be rudely said “only on Sundays” “only on Sundays” I looked at the menu again and it doesn’t say only on Sundays. It’s with the sides and desserts on the menu! We were compensated £5 off the bill. Over priced, food overrated and management need some training in personal hygiene and customer service!

We were visiting family on the Island. So decided this looked good to stay the night. When we got there good carparking. But no one there to greet us at reception so hubby had to go and find someone. We were shown to our room which was supposed to be superior, but wasn't. Very small, but nice bathroom. Bed seemed clean. But the floor needed hoovering. Only 1 chair in the room so after visiting elderly parents we needed to sit and chill in our room, but ended up one of us sitting on a hard seat. We went down later for dinner. Menu not good. So we went for something we thought would be good as right on seafront. Fish n chips!.... Well we eventually got it, but it was refried as the batter was dark brown and saturated with fat, very thin cod!. Chips n peas were nice tho.!. We weren't asked if all ok, lady just took our plates,. So hubby told her it was not nice at all... We never got an apology!. No one came out to say anything. All the waitress saud was... "I didn't cook it"!. But she would let chef know.... 😕 No one came out, no one said bye hope you enjoyed it!.. So we went back to our room.!. Well after a part decent nights sleep, as in our room we could hear loud voices coming from downstairs, which went on until 11pm!. Well we got up for breakfast. Only us and 2 others in room. 1 person serving, we asked for coffee, which we got a smile. Then what did we want for breakfast?.. (well, no menu on table) so we asked... Breakfast came but no coffee!.. Eventually got coffee. Lol.. Breakfast was nice. And view beautiful. Well we packed and no one there to say goodbye. So off we went.... Would we stay here again?... We don't think so!!!... Very disappointed as this was our holiday to visit elderly parents. 😢😢

We chose to stay here for 3 nights as a treat for my husband's birthday. We love to be by the sea/ estuary, and had to be near Colchester zoo where we were visiting. I had requested the room with the best sea view and with a good shower. Room 1 did not disappoint. A dual aspect spacious room with amazing views of the estuary over the boatyard. The bathroom was equally large with a massive deep bath and separate power shower cubicle. An additional heater had been placed in the room in case the radiators didn't provide sufficient heat on what was a cold weekend. We were welcomed by friendly staff who were very attentive and willing to please. We ate there on our first evening and, although rather a limited menu, the chick pea and cauliflower curry was really tasty. As I can't eat spicy curries, I was informed that if it was too hot for me I could choose another main course instead. Nothing seemed too much trouble! Breakfast had a good choice of mains. My husband had a full English each morning, and I had poached eggs with hollandaise sauce and smoked salmon. There was also poached eggs with hollandaise sauce and spinach or with black pudding. Great to have poached eggs as these aren't always offered for hotel breakfasts. Unfortunately, as with so many other hotels and restaurants, only full fat milk, or semi- skimmed is available with coffee and tea. I always have skimmed milk to appreciate the full flavour of the coffee. Other than that, a slow draining shower was resolved quickly. I was concerned about flooding the bathroom floor! Please can housekeeping use some descaler to remove the limescale in the shower cubicle and around the taps and shower head. This is a common issue often neglected in so many hotels where we have stayed, but so important. Thank you to all the staff at the Victory for a relaxing and enjoyable 3 nights stay. A beautiful location for bird watching and walking. We hope to return.

We went to Victory today with my partners mother who is elderly and suffering with dementia. Had to wait 25 minutes to get a drink (not a problem as could see they were busy and was told the wait for food was an hour). Got our drinks and menus - once we decided on food - queued again and was then informed that they were no longer taking any food orders and we would need to wait a further 30 minutes and we may be able to order. So asked wouldn’t it be a good idea to inform your bar staff that was the plan. Found the whole experience very frustrating. Then to complete our visit when my wife took her mum to the toilet (described as disabled) the first door is pull open outwards So a member of the public assisted in holding the door then when got to the disabled door which then had to slid open before access was available and was very wobbly and difficult to manoeuvre, then once inside the toilet the toilet seat was broken and the only grab bar was several feet away & you would need an orangutangs reach to use. Toilet was dirty and poorly disability friendly. No support in place to seat or stand to use the toilet facility. In conclusion will not go back to what is advertised as a family pub. If your disabled give it a wide birth.

Although lovely to be next to the water, the pub is very overpriced when it comes to food which isn’t particularly great plus the portion size of the starts and sides are disappointing considering that the nachos literally had just 16 poking out of the guacamole which cost £9! Ridiculous! The wait at the bar was also long considering there was one person in front of me with what seemed like three members of staff serving one customer and then they decided to serve a local even though I was blatantly there first. Come for the views and garden but not the service or food plus expect a long wait for food and drinks. 2 stars offered 1 for views 1 for the garden.

This didn’t register at first but to our amazement the main course appeared followed closely by the starters. So instead of a two course lunch we had a main with a starter side dish. I cannot work out why they would do this, we had paid up front, we’re they worried we would eat or starter and run off without eating the main? My best guess is that it saved trips to serve us, the place was almost deserted so they weren’t run off their feet. Perhaps they need to remember that we are the customers and not an inconvenience. Luckily the ones who ordered main and dessert didn’t get their ice cream with their main however we did have to go in to prompt them to bring them.

Extremely disappointed with this Wimpy. Popped in for lunch (all day breakfast and International Grill). Utterly disgusting. Chips tasted like cardboard. Bendy sausages were vile. Eggs were dry. Patty was horrid. Staff extremely miserable and uninterested with complaints. Offered a second bowl of chips. Also inedible. No apology. No offer of a discount. Toilets were filthy. Waste of £35.00 Save your money and eat in one of the many other local restaurants.
