I love Caribbean food... not just the basic jerk chicken but goat and famous roti and pretty much anything made with plantains... and as everyone else has pointed out, the staff are SOOO nice, trying to be friendly, etc. Unfortunately the management seems to have not a single business bone in their body, and the kitchen turns over chefs as often as I change my socks, so how can they establish demselves? The meat still has bones in (cheapest cuts?) and the chicken is dry, and the rice is cold.... and the flavours come from a bottle. But I keep coming back because I want you to be better. Please up your game, serve proper food, lay out the tables like you care, turn the music down, put the food into the roti rather than beside it (once you've used cubed meat rather than butchered carcass) and you may be able to build up a customer base! You're the only one in the area, so we need you!

Arrived in a party of 4. off the menu there was no white wine. no salt fish fritters. no oxtail and no ice cream. we had our starters and before finishing the mains were being bought out. cocktails were nice but had to wait so long for them. curry goat was ok if you like it without any pepper at all. I wont be rushing back.

I have read the other reviews so now I'm not sure if I was lucky! Eight of us went for lunch. The lunch menu was £7.80 for two courses, starter and main or main and dessert. The jerk chicken wasn't ready, so some of us had soup to start and the rest had patties. The food was brought up at different times, but I supposed this was because it was freshly cooked. Both the soup and the patties were delicious. For mains I had oxtail and butter bean stew but there was also a choice of curries, vegetable rice or rice and peas. Again the meals were brought up at different times, but the food was mouth wateringly delicious. The staff were very friendly. As we were the only ones in there it is difficult to know what the ambience is like. It was excellent value at £7.80 per person. Perhaps it is best to go for lunch!

I really wanted to like this place. I quite like Caribbean food and was pleased to see that a nice looking restaurant had been opened in my area. From the outside, it's a pretty white building, a refurbishment of The Mariners pub. However, stepping inside, it was literally a calamity from start to finish. We went a few months ago and it was freezing cold in there - we along with the few customers in there were wearing our coats throughout the meal. The place was pretty empty even though it was a Saturday night which should have been a warning to us. We waited some time for someone to seat us. We then had to wait 10 minutes to receive menus - it was quite difficult to attract attention from the waiting staff. The menu was short in terms of choice but thats not always a bad thing. We ordered a drink each, and both ordered jerk chicken with rice and peas. My drink arrived first. My husbands drink took 15 further minutes to arrive. Our food took 45 minutes to arrive - mine came first and a further 10 minutes later, my husbands arrived. We had both ordered the same thing! It was shocking and the attitude from the waiting staff was appalling. It was a devil may care attitude, as though we were putting them out. I honestly couldn't believe it. The food was not good - boney meat being charged at £16 per meal. The presentation of the food was like prison slop - thrown on to the plate. We ate very quickly and left. I would never darken the door of this place again - I would be most surprised if it is open in 6 months from now. I don't think even Gordon Ramsay would be able to sort this restaurant out.

My girlfriend and I ate lunch here on July 9, 2013. They were in the process of remodeling while we were there, literally. The inside was nice and its evident they are putting a lot of time and money into the remodel. Even the restrooms were nice. We were welcomed at the door by one of the owners. We were the only two in the place and he put on some music (which we could have done without) for ambiance. Lilian ordered the lamb soup and I had the lamb, chicken and beef combo plate. The food was ready in a reasonable amount of time. Her soup was delicious. It was a bit spicy for her liking, but great nonetheless. My food was very flavorful and cooked just right. The chicken fell off the bone and the lamb melted in my mouth. The rice and vegetables were perfect. I believe our bill came to £24. Definitely reasonably priced.I have read some of the reviews and conclude that either the food is hit-and-miss, or they have improved the overall quality. Caribbean food is traditionally rich in flavor and can be somewhat overwhelming if you are not used to it. I think these guys keep it true to form without the overbearing flavors I have experienced before in restaurants serving the same food. Like another review said: you will likely need more than one pitcher of water, due to the food being a bit on the spicy side. The only issue we had is that the service was pretty slow. We finished eating and waited about twenty minutes for someone to come check on us. I requested the bill and we waited another fifteen minutes. With that said, we are still anxious to return to Maroons on our next trip to London. I wish them success with their establishment, as they are very friendly and deserving.

I've read the other reviews (after visiting) and can only conclude it must be hit and miss cos we had a lovely evening here last night. It was very quiet and the service was quite laid back but didn't present a problem. I had the salty fish & ackee starter which I loved and my partner really enjoyed the patty, I had curry for main course and he had jerk chicken - the meat was tender and just fell away from the bone. We had rice and peas with it which was also delicious much to my surprise. It was beautifully spicy and the jug of water we had was definitely needed, the waitress kindly topped this up with ice to keep it cold. The other guests were friendly and the live music was excellent, we had an enjoyable relaxed evening with great food. I will definitely go back especially as with a Tastecard the price is very good.

Really wanted this place to be good as I live locally and love jerk chicken & Carribean food in general. The place looks lovely - they have done up a derelict pub and it looks great - and the staff were very nice, but unfortunately, the quality of the food was just abysmal. The jerk chicken was tough & stringy (and tasted possibly twice-cooked-old) and covered in a gloop that resembled watered-down Reggae Reggae sauce. It was inedible, I threw most of it in the bin. Cheap, old poor quality chicken, left to dry out, then covered in a gooey sauce that was almost - but not completely - unlike Jerk.Gutted. I'll go back in a few weeks and see if they have improved. Fingers crossed.

I stayed close by in some apartments and went here for dinner. The decor is awful, the service left a lot to be desired. I waited a long time to get some food, when it did arrive, it was luke warm and tasted awful. I had to send my chicken dish back as it was undercooked, I didnt get any apology, just a horrible look for complaining. I got the feeling that no-one in the place has been to Africa and tasted any local cuisine. I left feeling hungry and was several pounds lighter. What a shame, no wonder the place was empty..

For starter we had ackee and saltfish with a dumpling for starter (one complaint, I could have ate three of the delicious dumplings which were soft and succulent), then I had curry goat with rice and peas and a glass of red wine. Mark had the same starter, oxtail with rice and peas and some rum punch, we both enjoyed the food.We will definitely come again.Thank you to Porsha for looking after us xPauline & Mark (Harrow)

My colleague went to get us some food for lunch, I had eaten from this restauant once before & I wasnt overly impressed but the food was ok so I assured him the food is at a decent level. When my colleague returned with the food the first thing he complained about was how long it took for him to be served & that when he did finally get served the lady behind the till didnt have a clue about prices on any of the food, she had to then look at the menu on a number of ocassions. When I finally went to eat my lunch I noticed straight away after opening the lid of the Rice & Peas that there was a burnt smell coming from the container so I tasted it & it was 100% burnt! (Maybe not on appearance but definately on smell & taste. It was what us Caribean's call "Bottom of the pot" & I was so dissapointed that such a nice looking place with so much potential in my area had such bad service plus poor standards of food!? I didnt eat any of the Rice & peas just eat the Curry goat by itself which was a shame. The curry goat was decent by itself & i would give it a 5/10. That day 4 or 5 of us bought food & we all experienced the same thing with the rice which isnt good at all! When you look at the place or see a menu you would never in a million years think that this is the standard but it was on that day im sorry to say.So after this experience I thought it was only right for me to call them & complain about the poor service that i had received only to be told by the lady on the phone that "she had the rice & peas that same day & it was fine maybe abit spicy" lol sorry but I had to laugh because she didnt even know what to say. (she was very polite though) She basically ended the call by taking my name & number & saying that management would get back to me....this was Sunday 5th at around 2 3pm, now its Tuesday 7th & still nothing from anyone?? Hopefully they will prove me wrong & give me a call back. Another thing i asked my colleague to get me a drink, he came back with a drink called 'Bigga' but a minature version for £1 which is ridiculous & when I opened it the drink was flat, for me it was just getting worse by the minute! Anyway Im finished now, I think this place should learn from there mistakes & take customers feedback on board because The Maroon has so much potential.

We went to this restaurant tonight to use a wowcher for 2 people, including 2 courses and 2 glasses of wine. When we arrived around 6:30pm the restaurant was completely empty, although it was a Friday. We asked how the voucher works, and the waitress explained to us about the courses and then asked which drinks we would like. She told us it included two glasses of wine and asked if we would like anything else to drink. We decided to start with a glass of water and a beer, thinking we would have the wine with the main course. The lady brought the drinks and removed the wine glasses. This was our first time in a Caribbean restaurant, but I have to say the menu was quite limited: only 3 possible starters, 3 or 4 mains, and 2 different desserts.I had a kind of chicken roll as starter and jerk chicken with coconut rice as a main course. The starter was nice but I found the chicken in the main chewy and overly spiced. The service was also quite slow considering we were the only people in the restaurant. I also thought it was a bit cheeky that the drinks were all small measures and the same price (water, beer, and wine) which considering the food is very spicy, could ear to you buying lots of drinks.I would have saved myself the hassle to write a review, and just not go back to the place, but I found the attitude of the woman serving us extremely annoying when we asked to pay for the bill. The lady presented a bill for 3 beers, including one of the beers we had instead of the wine, and other 2 beers we ordered afterwards. So basically the voucher did include 2 glasses of wine, we didn't have the wine but 1 beer and 1 glass of water ( and this only because she removed the glasses after serving the drinks and we thought those drinks were replacing the wine) and she made us pay for the beer that was replacing the wine. We asked the reason why she wanted us to pay for the additional beer, and she said the wine couldn't be replaced by a beer… Obviously we could have complained, but considering how slow they were serving us, we decided to leave. The bottom line is, cheeky and slow service, and the food wasn't nice at all.

So we arrived at 8.30pm we were shown to our table about 15 minutes later - there were two ladies running round like headless chickens no exaggeration serving the whole restaurant on a saturday night. We waited half an hour to be given a menu and nearly half an hour more to be asked if we wanted a drink. The people who came in half an hour after us got their order taken before us, we ordered about quarter to ten waited 20 minutes to then be told they had no more jerk wings starter so I had to have acki and saltfish - which was in a tiny bowl (kid size) and swimming with an inch of yellow oil ontop?!The main was finally served at about twenty past ten, jerk chicken was so spicy not in a nice way and as someone said previously it seemed like a jar sauce, the rice and pea was nice tho tasted a bit coconutty We came on a wowcher deal 2 courses for £19 plus a glass of wine each. We were allowed to swap alcohol for soft drinks which was nice but it was half an hour wait everytime we ordered one to when we actually got one not good! The main waitress an older lady i think she may have been wife of the owner sang kareoke at about 11pm and serving customers, clearing plates and settling bills went out of the window - she was more interested in singing so after 3 hours of waiting etc we walked out like everyone else. The food wasnt great but it had great potential, if it impoved and they got more staff in the restaurant and kitchen i would return as it is local however i definitely wouldnt have paid full priec for the current standard, given the wait of 3 hours for 2 courses I woud have walked out if i didnt have a voucher and had already paid

My wife and I decided to try this new restaurant as we are big fans of Caribbean food but also expect it to be of good quality, presented with some style, in a welcoming and relaxing setting and by professionals who look like they are enjoying their job but I'm afraid most of this was lacking during our visit. We walked into the restaurant and waited by the entrance to be welcomed and seen to our seats by someone which was relatively prompt but our seats were uncomfortable and we were offered an alternative which was next to the loo so we declined as all other tables were apparently pre-booked. It was a Saturday and the restaurant was quite busy but not full. It took some time before we were presented with the menu and our orders taken but this didn't bother us too much however, we did notice a group at another table waited a considerable amount of time before someone even acknowledged them, they had come in waited for a while then sat themselves at a table as there was no one around at the time. Another group waited at the entrance for about 10mims before they were seated, then waited another 10-15 and no one came to offer them drinks, a menu or take their order so they simply got up and left! Our starters arrived and they both were very tasty but my wife's soup had clearly been reheated in the microwave and my ackee and saltfish was quite oily.I was shocked when the waitress turned up when we would have been expecting our main courses to tell me they had run out of the fish I ordered nearly 1hr before! I reluctantly asked for the oxtail stew instead but she then came back 10mims later to say that was also no longer available. My options were curry goat or jerk chicken, neither of which I wanted on this occasion. Again, I reluctantly chose the jerk chicken. Both were again very tasty when they arrived. We also overheard people at some of the other tables complaining about the lack of choice. They seem to get the fundermentals of running a restaurant so wrong that I'd be surprised if its still open in 6 months which would be a terrible shame. That said, these issues shouldn't be too difficult to fix and if they do, they could be around for the long haul.

We had a good meal with wine for £20 in city of london. I have no complaints. When this establishment is fully up and running it will be a great local dining experience. Only critism is to take out the description of African as there wasn't any African food on the menu.

My husband and I went to The Maroons (caribbean restaurant) on Friday 29th March. Being of a caribbean decent my husband and I were really looking forward to this dining experience. We arrived at approx 7.35pm and we were escorted to our seat. We were then left for 20mins without being asked if we would like to order a drink etc....! The restuarant was not busy so there was absolutely no need for them to be as slow as they were. We were so confused about the non attention we received my husband had asked the waiter if we had to go up and order our food. We were then told that someone will be with us shortly. We heard one of the managers tell the waitress to serve us and she right out refused and said so we could hear that she didn't want to! During our wait many people were complaining about the long wait for the food. We saw a group of people come in the same time as us and then leave about 15mins later as they were not seen to and did not appreciate the long wait. Finally our drink and food order was taken and we received our starters which was beautiful even though it wasnt hot. I was slightly apprehensive about telling the waitress the food was not hot as we did not want to wait any longer. For the main course I had Jerk Chicken which was not authentic the sauce was from a jar and not that tasty. The lady who finally served us was great. She was very attentive. I think she was the manager but I'm not sure. Between the starters and the lady who served us they made our time there a little better. I had bought a deal from Wowcher so therefore had the food at a discounted price. The food you get at The Maroons is not worth the price they charge. If I had paid full price I would definitely had complained about the service and food and I probably would have refused to pay.We had travelled from Leicester to go to this restuarant and this was a terrible dining experience not worth our money, time or effort.Definitely would not recommend this restaurant to anyone especially if you would like authentic caribbean food. It was a great disappointment.
