The Market Tavern in County Durham

Typical old style pub, and in my opinion one of the best pubs in Chester le Street, a place you will always get a very good beer and a wine, there is a fantastic selection of very well presented beers and lagers, its comfy and well laid out, very reasonable prices. Friendly attentive staff, very seldom is there a wait to get served.Great atmosphere, well done guys.

Get place and a well poured pint from hannah 👌 great place for a after work pint.

Quite expensive and although advertised as being open til 11 called last orders at 9.30 because shutting at 10. Don't bother.

This place has really gone back it used to be a busy warm inviting place to go but it is the opposite it is absolutely scruffy from top to bottom and the staff are miserable and don’t acknowledge you when you are standing at the bar it wasn’t as busy as I can remember infact it was pretty much empty no wonder it isn’t the most inviting pub there are far better places to go

Disgrace. Barmaid spends more time talking and complaining about the customers that are paying her wages. She has a horrible attitude and seems to just want to serve her friends or regulars. Never again

Unfortunately went here one night with my other half. There was this blonde haired young lady serving behind the bar. I stood there for ages whilst she just chatted away with the rest of the staff ignoring me and serving her local customers. I thought I would let my wife ask as I was feeling annoyed, well she did exactly the same to her and my wife interrupted her to ask for drinks. She looked at my wife in an extremely angry way and told her to F off. What an absolute disgraceful place this is that they employ disgraceful staff like this needless to say I'll spend my hard earned cash somewhere else.

Popped in for a pint today only to see a Mass of Newcastle scarves pinned all over the ceiling/top of the walls. What's that all about? The manager using it as his own little private Sports Bar? Nah, not drinking in a Skunk Bar.

Called in with 7 friends last night. Very chatty and pleasant bar maid. Pub was almost empty at 10.00pm, beer was cheap, Doombar £2 a pint. However it soon went very "flat".

Just love this pub. Such good value for money , comfortable, clean and well run. Glen is good host and bar staff are amazing.

Used to be a half decent pub, now an absolute dive, awful.

NOT SAFE. Notice my pint glass was broken after the first sip and request an exchange wory on possible glass in the drink. The owner wanted to pour the content onto another glass even though that would just mean any glass would transfer over. I explained that I did not felt safe with the glass content anylonger. The owner disagreed and pushed back repeatedly. I couldn't be bother to argue with such a mentallity so bought myself another pint and moved on. Won't be coming back to give my beer money to that kind of person.

What can I say about this place. Avoid at all costs. Staff are rude and nasty,my friend was jumped on by the local kretins who dwelve in this dump for no apparent reason and ended up with a dislocated shoulder. Stay well away

Me and my brother, bought two pints of cask ale and it was clearly off.The manager offered us alternative drinks at no extra cost, then she gave us information about our last bus home. Couldn't fault the service.

Cheap drinks down to earth pub..

Unbelievable.. my son and i called there on Thursday evening (4th August 2022) at 10.15pm. We expected to be greeted with a hello what can I get you!! But NO it was 'you can have one drink I am closing early" Charming staff!! 🤔🤔 last time i will go there!

Good selection of drinks, don't let the smokers outside put you off the staff and customer's are really friendly.

In my opinion, the best place in Chester le Street. Probably because I have a nostalgic link to it... Every Saturday after the market for a few pints with my dad. Anyway, the staff remain great, the place itself still has the same atmosphere, old style pub with friendly locals. Proper pub.

Great bar staff, best beer in Chester le Street. Been my watering hole for the last 17 years now and I won't go elsewhere. Anyone who comes into the market tavern as a stranger will leave as a friend.

Great pub at the Tesco end of Chester Le Street run by Glen and his team. Really good beer at exceptionally reasonable prices. Always good conversation with friendly staff and customers.

Always busy probably due to the very cheap beer. Good buzz about the place & Covid regs strictly observed.

Cheap and a decent pint only gave it four stars as the member of staff that served us obviously got the job for her looks and not for her pleasant personality was going to give it 3 stars but probably the other staff or better.

We are not regular customers to this pub however our past experiences there have always been pleasant. Today we (a group of 4) went in and approached the bar. There was no door staff guiding customers as to where the enter and exit routes are. A very loud female bar person shouted "SCUSE ME DID YOU JUST COME IN THAT DOOR!" Everyone looked at us, she was telling other customers "I'm sending them back out" and the same rude bar person shouted "GET BACK OUT AND COME IN THE OTHER DOOR!" We did in fact 'get out' and we promptly went to another pub never to return again to The Market Tavern! People were already huddled together and there was no social distancing inside the pub! We believe this bar person needs to learn some hospitality when working in the hospitality industry!

Definitely didn't find it cheap. Pint of Guinness and a double G & T £9.80 , rather drink in Horners across street , same drinks £8.20 and a better pint.

It’s not somewhere I would choose on a regular basis as it lacks the cosy atmosphere I look for on a night out,but it does get very busy ,and we have called in when passing as a couple of our friends go there so we’ve popped in for a drink with them,so it’s quite lively but I find it too noisy so not my scene .my husband would go in with his mates he likes the beer and it’s quite reasonable prices so fair enough
