The Market Pub in Chesterfield

Called here on a Saturday lunch timen with no prior planning, it was very busy and a little noisy but we were lucky to bag the last table. We were very pleasantly suprised at the fantastic quality and taste of the food and have already shared our experiences with family. We definately hope to return.

Delicious lamb dinner in a bustling and atmospheric pub….. on a Wednesday.

I was recommended this lovely pub back in 2019 while away on training and have been back many times since while away. Food is great, staff are friendly, pies are brilliant and if you like some spice on your burger try the “voodoo” burger, chef informed me after having the burger that the owner makes this sauce, really is delicious, will be back

The food is always really good here and they have interesting flavour combinations.

Good, tasty food in pretty healthy portions. The burgers are a sensible option although not absolutely thin smash burgers that you might have got used to. The only real issue are the pie choices. I recently had the steak and ale and the filling was extremely tasty, but there was a scant two inches of pastry. So if you're looking for something with a good slab of pastry top and bottom perhaos steer clear for one of the other tasty options.

Great find in Chesterfield, we asked about dietary gluten-free dairy free was told many dishes could be adapted, I had the lamb shank, with vegan mash and veg - portions were great, plenty of tasty gravy they even cut my carrots into sticks 😉 The landlord mentioned they had gf df choc sponge with vegan ice cream which was great - although too big a portion Thank you for the welcome and informative detail on the menu

Food mediocre at best. Claims to be homemade, id be ashamed sending the mac and cheese fries out, small portion and really not great. Feel sorry for waiting staff having to be customer facing at this venue.

Good food and they are dog friendly too

Probably one of the worst meals we've had for ages, everything is microwaved to an inch of it's life. My mum and my wife had what was jokingly called a pie, two pieces of rock hard pastry with minced up scrag ends. My fish and chips was barely ok Just avoid entirely, over priced low quality drops.

Had a choice of tables to sit at upon arrival, service was quick and food was nice. Good price for the quality of food received and one of my favourite places to eat in town; easily the best in the town centre.

The food here never disappoints. Today we took advantage of the burger offer ( 2 burgers for £16.90) and we were really impressed by the amazing flavours and the quantity and quality of fillings!

Lovely food and a great atmosphere at The Market. Good selection of wines, including my favourite, Primitivo! Great location too in the market square.

Very expensive for a town centre

We went for a midweek meal and had the burger deal (buy one get the other for £3.95). The food portions were generous and the food was delicious. The staff were nice and helpful and the venue is lovely.

Had a lovely lunch here. The food was good and I think the chips were the best I've ever had. Ever.

Great meal, especially the vegetarian option. A pleasant change from what I normally experience. Congratulated the chef and asked him how he prepared the meal for me to attempt to try!! My friends were also happy with their meat dishes. Friendly, welcoming and accommodating staff.

First ever visit .. efficent friendly staff,clean,lovely chilled atmosphere and fabulous food ..would definitely return 🙂

Great tasting burgers, very well seasoned

This pub is by far the best!! We wanted to find a place to eat and everyone had recommended this place. All home made food and it was absolutely delightful. I will definitely be returning. Our food order was jerk chicken baguette and the steak ciabatta, with one portion of home made chips. Amazing price and the staff went above and beyond. So happy to have been to this place. Thank you again!

First impressions very dark interior we where told where to sit the pub was busy upon going to our seats the seat was wet so I asked if we could move down a seat no problem so we did, the tables where dirty & wet could of done with a clean especially as others had sat there. We got our drinks all ok then ordered food the food was lovely tasted fresh I noticed that the kitchen looked so small for the chefs & it was so warm too. they had lit candles on the table in which this weather they wasn't needed I removed ours as it was getting warmer! Not sure if we would go again we felt it needs an upgrade or kept tidier but credit to chefs great food!

What a lovely friendly traditional pub - serving very good food with great Vegan & Vegetarian options. The chef even brings your food to you when it’s ready 👍

Excellent food reasonably priced. Really tasty and well made. Quality. Good range of beer. Recently came back with a group of 6 friends for food and drinks. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Food was good and tasty, good value for money. Range of drinks was great, particularly enjoyed my pint of Japiur Noir from Thornbridge brewery.

Absolutely wonderful evening. Thank you. Excellent range of well kept ales, both of our fish dishes were cooked to perfection. The staff were excellent and the atmosphere in the pub was vibrant. A lovely evening.

Visited on Saturday evening with a couple of friends. We all had the Ribeye steak special. Had to wait a while, but it was totally worth it. Absolutely top class! Best steak we have had in a long time. Thank you!

Food here is absolutely beautiful. It is definitely mine and my boyfriends new place to come and eat, we’ve already been twice this week. Atmosphere is good and staff are friendly. The only thing I would comment on is they did seem understaffed for how busy they were. Tip: order the salmon or the sea bass they are to die for!! 🫶🏼✨

Great pup in the center of Chesterfield. Very tasty food, regional beer and a good atmosphere with music. You can pay by card but American Express didn't work. The service was quick and very friendly. Definitely recommendable!

Brilliant place, must visit more often. Food is great, selection of drinks is superb. Only niggle was the table and chairs can be uneven as it's a cobbled floor but to be honest I didn't really care either. As Arnie once said, I'll be back.

A fabulous, traditional pub, serving superb cask ales. All beers very well kept, and served by friendly, helpful staff!

Lovely pub, friendly and attentive staff. The food was delicious, treacle glazed pork fillet (2 large pieces) with leek mash, broccoli and cider and cream sauce. Husband had home cooked roast lamb dinner. Neither of us could finish, large portions. Would definitely go again.

It used to be a really great pub when Keith was the landlord. Since he left it has become very expensive. £5 a pint of landlord that I can get for £3.90 in the chesterfield arms,which is a better pub tbf.

Another real gem of a find. We take visiting clients here on a regular basis as the food is stunning. Fantastic for veggie and vegans, one of the best menus I've seen and if you like pies then you are in for a treat. Great beers, great food and great service. Highly recommended.

Lovely pub, good range of food and drinks.

First of all, excellent service throughout, they couldn't do enough for us and the staff are a credit to the Market Tavern. The food ordered was Lobster and Steak and a Lamb lunch. The Lobster and Steak was okay but all lobsters were on the small side so this was a little disappointing. I had the Lamb dinner, nothing wrong with the meat but the potato was served as on the cooler side of luke warm, the yorkshire pudding was one f those small ones that you can buy frozen but is was over heated so it couldn't be eaten. It is quite expensive here compared with others in the area so unfortunatley everything needs to be spot on, even down to offering mint sauce in a pot rather than sachets. The food is what you go for so 3/5 I think is fair.

Loved it . . I had my Easter lamb dinner there on Good Friday with the family. There's also a large collection of gin on offer (in fact my husband bought me some mermaid gin for Xmas after sampling some here).

I visited with a friend on Saturday 23rd March . I had a Lamaba (or something like that) and my friend had a steak. The food was really nice and the pub was lively with people chatting away. Thankfully no sports or music played too loud. There seemed a good mix of people, all looked quite friendly. So I would say this is a 'gay friendly ' premises. I always put that in now, as surprisingly there are still places where LGBTQ are not made to feel welcome by patrons or staff. I would definitely visit again.

A cosy pub with a genuine patina to all of it's furnishings. The food was very tasty, reasonably priced and honest. There is a wide choice of food and drink available there. On the downside, the menus were a little worn and the service a little slow, and it was cold in there - everyone was wearing coats. However, it's definitely worth a visit - I can recommend the steak and chips 👌🏻

We travelled from Nottingham & planned to come here for an evening meal. Upon arrival there was kids playing inside & outside, there was a disco atmosphere inside - seem like a private function was happening. The website states food serviced from 5pm-9pm on a Sunday, me & my wife was highly disappointed as we was recommended to visit here!

We travelled from Nottingham to enjoy the Lobster Festival tonight and goodness, it was so worth all the time and effort. Absolutely superb meal and a lovely chef who was prepared to go to that extra little effort for us (Garlic on the fillet steak) - impossible to fault it. Without exception, friendly supportive staff. We were so very impressed and staggered into the Premier Inn for our night's stay, so full that we couldn't even manage a coffee. So many thanks to all the staff who were there tonight - including those all important ones working behind the scenes. We will be back!!

If you can find a better steak and ale pie in the whole of Derbyshire, I'll personally buy it you. Fantastic meal and even better service

Just eaten probably the best plate of food I’ve had in years. Wide ranging bar with many different ales, lagers and ciders. Food menu seems to be more lamb and pork than anything else BUT I chose the pork fillet and it was fantastic, probably the best plate of food I’ve eaten in 12months. Staff are alert and friendly, prices are reasonable for a town centre pub. Would I come here again, I’m booking now…

This week we were in Chesterfield on business for the first time. Far from home and looking for somewhere nice to eat we came across this charming pub quite by chance. We had intended to eat somewhere different each night, but after the first experience we returned here every night for four nights. The food here was amazing, you can get a beautiful roast dinner on a Sunday and a lamb roast dinner every night of the week. With chef's specials available every night it was sometimes difficult to choose, but the owner was on hand to advise us with his enthusiastic descriptions of every dish. Great wine and ales and we dined out like royalty with roast dinners, chicken masala pie, chicken skewers, sea bass, fish and chips, pasta and burgers. There was so much more I'd have liked to try, but we only had four nights. Every night the chef's delivered the food to our table with well deserved pride and the bar staff could not do enough for us, I've never felt so welcome in a pub and we even got a few hugs from the locals as we bid them farewell on our last night. If you are ever in need of a beautifully cooked, wonderfully presented and fairly priced meal in Chesterfield then please don't waste your time looking elsewhere.

I’ve eaten here so many times before and it’s been lovely every time, service and food included. I also work in hospitality (front of house) and a couple of your staff members dine where I work and I have built a good rapport with them. As of tonight I requested for a Guinness and black but with plenty of blackcurrant and the bar tender pulled a face as if I’d asked for something bizzare. When my food came out he asked if there was anything else he could get us and I asked for some bbq sauce. Again, he pulled a face of confusion and it I find it quite rude. I understand what I eat and drink isn’t to his preference but he should be more discreet with how he feels rather than pulling faces like a 4 year old whose trying veg for the first time . Thanks 🙃

Great food, friendly staff. It was a little dark towards the back of the pub, when eating.

We have been here 4 times for family birthdays and each time we have really enjoyed the food. The place has a really homely feel and the food is always delicious and is freshly made. Recently we went for my nans birthday and again everything was really yummy and the staff welcoming and friendly. The only issue is sometimes spacing e.g 3 on one booth. If you are a family that requires a bit more space I’d be tempted to let them know in advance.

It was once a lovely public house upon going there last Saturday It had a terrible smell like the public toilets in the market hall . The toilets actually smelt more cleaner . Also the fact that it was full of dogs not as in women but actual dogs . I understand people like dogs I like dogs too but not everyone else's. Barking at one another all taking up spaces . The floor needs bleaching and getting rid of the smell of dogs if that's what you want to do plus who wants someone else's dog sat there while you are having dinner on a date . If I wanted to see dogs with a beer a meal I'll go to Spital dog kennels in future as it wouldn't smell as bad and the pets are more controlled. What a lovely pub it was to cater for those that like a dog walk and come in for a presseco. I half expected Paul ogradie to walk in at any moment. Not for me if I do return it will be with a cropped and docked chocolate doberman pincher. Food wise its really gone down hill sadly to say .

Wonderful service and excellent food. Staff so attentive and chefs really care about the food. Husband recommends the fish and ships and I couldn't eat all of my beef baguette even though it was absolutely delicious.

The staff were brilliant, one of our group couldn't make it, and they happily boxed up her meal for us to take home.

Probably the best place to eat in Chesterfield tbh. Usually go there once a month and always know I'm going to get great food. Bar staff are always friendly. Good general knowledge quiz on Thursdays from 9 ish. Real ales on too if that's your thing. Definitely recommend 👌

Sadly, the food was very nice the service wasn’t. Served by a young girl who was obviously having a bad day. No smile, ignorant and basically rude.

Great food and a wide selection of drinks.

The service was excellent. Our waiter really did go the extra mile to make sure we were happy, enjoying our food and were served in a timely manner despite being super busy on a Sunday. I had home made minced beef and onion pie with thick home cooked chips and mushy peas. Outstanding! Can't fault the place at all. Fantastic.

Haven't been for a while. The pub was very quiet but the service was very bad twice we had to ask how long the food would be. We both had a steak baguette with onion and mushrooms. The steak was like leather with 2 tiny bits of onion. The desert wasn't much better. Both myself and cousin left the majority of our meals.

The burgers are incredible. Ill often pop in for a pint on the way home from work and sit outside and people watch. Great staff and attentive. Had lunch here a few times and every time the burgers were sensational. Tasty, filling, and the value for money is top notch. Great pub, great food. Love it

Visited for lunch during the week. Nice cosy traditional pub. Service was friendly and efficient. Great selection of cask ales. Menu choices were appetising and interesting. I had the pie and it's one of the best I've had for a long time, full of delicious filling with home cut and cooked chips along with perfectly cooked vegetables. I would definitely return and recommend.

Thursday late lunch so understandably no atmosphere. Food delicious, presentation perfect.

Not a very pleasant experience all things considered. Very cold inside due to customers propping the doors open, very dark (phone torch needed to view the menus!) kitchen doors open for all to see the meals being microwaved - shame they didn’t leave ours in for another couple of minutes as it was cold! Complained to the staff who didn’t offer any sympathy - probably as they were very understaffed. Ovoid!

Called in looking for a decent pu decent drinks ans fantastic staff We found it . Slight problem became. A little cold outside so moved inside . Lovely guy found us a table that was free for next 2 hours to allow us to enjoy our day. PLEASE DONT SACK HIM WE SPENT IN EXCESS OF 45 POUNDS AND LEFT AS WE PROMISED . this is the pub to visit

Impressive real ale selection located in the centre of chesterfield. Booked for food on a Saturday night, all our meals were good particularly enjoyed the haggis starter rare to see it outside of Scotland. Our pie and burger mains were also good. Visited in October and it was cold inside so would fancy it during winter, whether they didn’t have the heating on or what we weren’t sat near to the door. Overall a good traditional pub that does quality great value food.

For a pub that claims to be the "home of gin" on their website this was a confusing experience. We weren't given a drinks menu and the staff seemed taken aback to be asked for one and didn't seem to know about the "gin of the day" that was advertised on the signage. Other than that our server was very attentive and efficient. Unfortunately the chicken, bacon and leak pie had no bacon or leak in it! The vegan burrito was also missing some of the listed ingredients. The burger was very good apparently and the fries, chips & sweet potato fries were all very good so it wasn't all bad. Just a bit disappointing and we felt a bit rushed out as they moved the tables around us ready for a gig that wasn't due to start for hours.

Lovely pub with absolutely fantastic food. Everything we order was delicious, from the burgers to the haggis to the lamb shank - and the scallop starters were incredible 👍 great choice of well keep beers, including a few high-end craft beers in the fridge, and a great choice of spirits. We’ll definitely be returning 😃
