What a find, never knew this pub was here, it was Tues eve so only us and 2 more diners in but a few locals having a pint, the food was top notch if I had a criticism, homemade chips and proper cheese on the burger would have been nicer but the gammon and the burger cooked to perfection, service from young girl on bar was impeccable made us feel so welcome, the chef was on holiday so the landlord cooked for us he came to ask if everything was OK, nice guy. Reasonably priced nice country pub feel about the place. 10 out of 10 we will be back.

Great little pub. Lovely bar/dining room with a big tap room that welcomes dogs. Can't understand why it's not busier. Good selection of beers.

The Sunday lunches are superb. The food is piping hot and all cooked really well. The staff are all lovely. Very good prices as well nice to see your getting home cooked meals at a good price. Already booked again!!

Robinsons have done an amazing job renovating this little gem but a complete waste of money to then put a plant pot in charge. Food was ok, good pint, clean and could be cozy. Unfortunately the sleazy landlord is the rudest man I’ve ever dealt with and happy for the young bar staff to then giggle at our family. Real shame as it is a lovely pub but will be going elsewhere in future.

We visited this Establishment on Sunday 7/4. There was 7 of us in total. We had a lovely Sunday dinner every plate was empty and well enjoyed. You’re made to feel so welcome and the service was excellent. It is now our place to meet when I come up and visit family every 3 months.

Called in for a late lunch with Mum (3pm!), quiet pub, only a few patrons at that time. Super friendly service at the bar. Pub very clean and cozy. We sat in the lighter, conservatory area and had lunch. Good choice of dishes. Food was delicious and very good value for money. Service was quick too. A very enjoyable visit and will definitely go there again.

We had family over from Australia and we decided to have a family meal together to celebrate our nieces 18th birthday. Even though they were fully booked they moved mountains to accommodate us all 16 in total . The food was great and the service brilliant and we were even allowed to hang up some 18th birthday decorations all in all a very pleasant evening was enjoyed thanks to all the lovely staff involved for making it happen.

Mid week and didn't fancy cooking, so we tried this place on our way home, pleasantly surprised. It's a little bit quiet but genuinely lovely traditional pub food and a lovely setting.

Just been here for a beautiful meal. Food is amazing, would highly recommend to anyone. Dog and children friendly. Staff are superb, very friendly and welcoming. Very pleasant place to spend our evening, also finished off with a few games of pool. Will definitely be returning customers. Thank you for your hospitality.

Finally a great local pub that still is a pub but also serves great food. We had a meal to be shared.Tomahawk Steak. It was cooked perfectly you don’t need any extras as it comes with chips , garnish snd 2 sauces. I would advise pre ordering as it takes time to prepare and cook. We waited about 1/2 hour which isn’t long in my opinion. There wasn’t any toughness to the meat at all. Staff are lovely and chef gave us personal attention and advice. Thank you we will see you again. Oh by the way Sunday lunch is lovely too.

Booked a table at very short notice. Staff were very accommodating, welcoming and friendly Service was fast, and food was great quality. Great value, too - the portions are massive. Nice atmosphere, and it looks like they have music and quiz nights too. Will return!

Sunday lunch over priced and tasteless chicken was re heated and dry.

It amazes me how this pub is still open. Service was slightly better this time, but told my drinks were £4.80... my bank has been charged £8.40... conveniently he didn't show me the card reader or give me a receipt

We moved to chesterfield over a year ago and we found the perfect local! Always has the best food and entertainment. Love the live music every week! We join in the quiz everyweek where they put on free food at half time. The staff are so friendly and always welcoming! Dogs allowed and always have treats available! Defo recommend to everyone!

Lovely pub but Sunday lunch was terrible...luke warm no taste.. veg hard ..I would of usually complained but was with older members of my family who may of been.upset

Lovely setting, good beer, decent food at good price

Had the steak and ale pie with my partner and it was basically soup. No flavour and I might has well of asked for a spoon or a straw to eat it. And the manager who runs it was extremely condescending and rude. I wasn’t even complaining about the food, I was asking about the gift cards and I’ve never met someone as rude in my life. Complete waste of money and time. Wouldn’t recommend

The Sunday lunches are the best around and you get good quality food and plenty of it... not much locally can beat the cock and magpie Sunday lunches. Brilliant

After initial problems regarding an earlier visit where I reviewed it badly I am happy to update my experience. After today's visit hindsight is a wonderful thing. If only we had stayed knowing the kitchen would be open things would have been so much better. Today we ate and drank here. The meals were excellent, very good value for money. It's a long time since I struggled to finish a pub meal but their steak and ale pie nearly did it for me. All freshly cooked and piping hot. Good choice of real ales including Old Tom on hand pump. Nicely refurbished environment makes it a good experience. Will be returning in the future.

We had two meals. The gammon & the hunters chicken. Very nice. Well presented & tasty. Good service & friendly people plus very clean throughout. Enjoyable night. We helped the food go down with well kept beers. A good experience. Thank you.

Nice quiet local, good selection of beer on and friendly staff

After a lovely walk around the reservoir we were a bit peck-ish so decided to have some food here. We had our 2 dogs with us which wasn't a problem and the staff member even brought out a bowl of water for them. We ordered food & drinks and only waited a short time before it was served. I had a burger & chips which was really good and the other half had half a chicken & chips which she enjoyed too. Really enjoyed it in there staff really welcoming and friendly and the food was lovely, just what we needed after a long walk.

I visiter this place for a post ride drink and have to say i was thoroughly impressed with the place The garden was clean and tidy to sit out in and the interior was very clean .the staff was great .they also have a great food menu also,although i didnt dine on this occasion.recommended

Came across this place after a good walk through Healey Dell,the staff are welcoming,the food is delicious and the coffee is great..just what you need after a ramble.A true jewel!

Very nicely refurbished, but we did wonder if the chairs are genuine old pews or just expensive reproductions. Limited menu for vegetarians (cheese and onion pie) and nothing for vegans. Surely a plant burger isn't too much trouble? Helpful staff.

The food was of a good standard. The menu could have had a little more choice as the options for vegans or vegetarian was limited. There was only one staff member front of house when we visited and she did a great job although it was hard to get additional drinks when we went to the bar as she was tricky to find.

We stopped off here after a hike. Very nice and welcoming inside. Nice open space in the beer garden where we enjoyed our drinks.

Very welcoming hosts, we have been here before and it was lovely. Unfortunately this time they were let down with a delivery, and although we had booked well in advance the only things available were sandwiches and quiche, all of which were edible but very mediocre and the bread was a bit stale.

The place has had a refurb and looks great, the serve food Thursday to Sunday. We find the price for a pint of Birra Moretti at £5.30 to be very steep

Delicious home cooked meals, a good size portion, staff very helpful, I've been for the roast dinners and lasagne would highly recommend!!! It's definitely put this pub on the map xx

My other half visited the cock and magpie quite a few years ago, but said the place had ‘gone down’ After looking for somewhere local to eat, we looked at recent reviews and was surprised at how good the reviews were….. we decided to give it another go as like I said, it was many years ago since my other half had visited. We guessed that it must have been taken over by new people. We decided to book for Sunday lunch and how pleased we did !!! I’m so glad we gave this great place a second chance. Staff very welcoming, atmosphere was relaxed and the food was absolutely beautiful. I can’t tell you how pleased we were to now find a great place to visit just on our doorstep. I guarantee if you give this plce a go, you won’t be disappointed. Thank you so much to all the staff and especially the chef 👍🏽

Came for my nans birthday, staff couldn’t do enough to make it a special occasion, very attentive to our party of 6, nothing too much trouble. Food was delicious, portions are massive and it’s all well priced. All meats cooked perfectly, will definitely return.

Been in a number of times since the refurb but this time for food, which was excellent. Went for the mixed grill and I was not disappointed. I must say that the young lady who works behind the bar has grown in confidence and was excellent. Not the cheapest but you get what you pay for. Top notch, would highly recommend.

I haven't been here for many many years, but this is a lovely traditional Inn, and the food and drink were exceptional both of us had a lovely meal amongst old friends, situated behind Revolution House where 3 dukes, gathered to settle the civil war in the "" Oliver "days, old Whittington is a lovely survivor an oasis amongst the great conurbations of Chesterfield, Bolsover, and the Derbyshire Nottinghamshire coal fields, giving the feel of a rural village unaltered by the industrial rancour that surrounds it the staff are friendly, polite engaging and helpful, have the common touch that relates to all, dogs were welcome and it was a friendly old world public house I enjoyed every minute indeed we both did many many thanks I can't praise enough, for the the lovely atmosphere we received.

Tonight we had lasagne, salad and garlic bread and gammon, egg and chips for £10 for two. My husband had jam roly poly with lashings of jam and custard for £3.95. It was delicious and we would definitely recommend. The staff are amazing and so helpful and friendly. Enjoy everyone.

Nice style traditional pub with 'shoe vs boots' split function offerings. Good drinks range, beer garden with convenient location for reservoir walks. Appealing menu sadly currently let down by service errors (missing item and refrigerated dessert pancake), that were quickly corrected... albeit after odd defensive and sit-beside-you enquiry. Hopefully teething flaws that will get sorted so matches potential.

Since the new owners it’s gone downhill, poor food

We were the first to eat at their outdoor tables since the lockdown was lifted. Excellent plate full, plenty of meat and veg. Will be back for more.

The current landlord/lady are amazing. They've been brilliant during the Covid 19 stuff putting all measures necessary in place and stopping anyone flaunting the rules. Whilst all the while making people feel welcome and bringing the pub back to it's former glory after some not great landlords. I cannot wait until it's open again so we can get back there.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch at the Cock and Magpie today. Great food first class service and brilliant hospitality. Was very impressed with the way the pub was laid out due to Covid 19. The place was spotless and staff were sanitizing after every customer. It was nice to relax and know that every effort had been made to keep the customers safe. One way system and social distancing but still the same homely atmosphere. Food and drink at really affordable prices. Also very Family friendly. Highly recommended.

Cannot fault anything about this place fantastic food fabulous hosts and staff and very reasonably priced drinks...these guys deserve everything as they really do make you feel welcome and nothing is too much trouble...I'll be returning often xx
