Great for sitting watching the world go by. Excellemt selection of drinks at reasonable prices and the home made Pizza is fabulous, but bear the 18" is enormous.

Great availability of beer, including low alcoholic ones. Pizza is delicious. Staff are very friendly.

Very familiar with Thornbridge having visited their Bakewell tap room many times with YoYo the beer monkey, stumbled across this place and stopped for a quick drink. Good selection of beers, not just Thornbridge brews, friendly welcoming service and a well done interior made for a lovely little stop. We'd do the same again if we were in town 😊🍻

Great pizza and loads of choice for drinks and plenty of room inside. A little expensive but to be expected for the location right next to the shambles.

Iv always left good reviews before for this pub but last night we were very disappointed with this establishment this time,we've been going in since it opened with many of our friends. I ordered our favourite pizza Pollo Espanol as always but to find it only having 1 piece of 🐔 between the 4 slices I had and 2 pieces between the other 4 slices and I was charged £7.80 for a small house 🍷 . I'm sorry but we won't be rushing back again.

Nice lively pub with a great selection of real ale (not only Thornbridge)

Only popped in for a drink atmosphere was good. The only complaint was it's a bit of a trek upstairs to the toilet. The pub was busy but no problem getting served

Loved it. Didn't eat food so can't really comment on that. Ale was lovely but only criticism is that it was too cold so couldn't really taste it until I'd almost finished my pint.

Great for a stein of beer 🍺. Pizzas can be ordered huge to share. Although good quality could be more generous with toppings. Vegan option more like a flat bread.

Stopped for drinks with four kids and a dog. Brilliant beers and highly accommodating of our group. Would highly recommend.

Have to say beer was first class cracking pints but after putting several rounds behind the bar and having a laugh between our small group of 5 people we were told To keep The noise down. Didn’t realise we were in a Sam smiths pub. The bar was really busy in the bottom floor and we were reminiscing and having a good laugh. Needless To say we took our money else where after Being told to be quiet

Great Thornbridge Beer themed City Center bar. Great selection of Thornbridge & guest ales. Over 3 floors with amazing views over The Shambles Market & York Minster.

A great place when you're allowed in. I have attempted to visit the market cap twice over the festive period of 2023. One visit we were a group of 7 (all middle aged men) and we were welcomed with open arms. We spent a good hour in here I'm bought food too, suspend the considerable amount too. The second visit I was with a group of four other people (5 middle aged men in total) and was turned away by the door staff "because they didn't want large groups" I will definitely think twice about going back!

Excellent real ales great service

A great pub in the centre of York with a fantastic atmosphere, comfortable seating, an extensive choice of drinks and calming background music and lighting. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will definitely return to try the food next time!

Worst pint of Jaipur I have ever had, tasted like the beer lines had not been cleaned properly or were in need of replacing due to trichloroanisole/TCA which makes the beer smell and taste like an old, damp church.

Always a good place to stop for a drink in york. Great selection of drinks, always have a pint of Veltins lager, ice cold glasses. Interesting building to look around with 3 floors. Great view of surrlunding York. Staff always very friendly, definitely recommend

Beautiful building that's been done out so nicely. I remember it being Precinct selling jeans back in the early 90s. Atmosphere is lovely, staff too. Clearly enjoy their jobs. Particular mention to Thomas and George who have a sound knowledge of their beers and are willing to spend time with customers. Shout out also to the lovely doorman (Sat 2/12) who had to endure that bitter cold but still readily welcomed us. Keep up the good work guys.

I like pubs and real ale and this was a place where you can enjoy both. It has been updated but retains the feel of an English pub. The staff are knowlegeable and helpful. It has 3 floors each with a different vib. Well done Thornbridge who run this fine house. My only complaint is that the toilets are small and on the 3rd floor. There is a lift but that is not convenient. Good seating and when the windows are thrown open in the summer the throng of the market will join the atmosphere of the pub.

Lovely atmosphere, friendly knowledgeable staff, good variety of beers, Likas in a cold glass is unbeatable. Dog friendly and good beer, food looked lovely too and prompt. Lovely views from upper floors.

I love York for it's old pub's but this new place has it all, oldy and warming on the ground floor, rustic on the 1st and 50s diner look on the 2nd. Great selection of ales and helpful, friendly staff too, can't wait to go back 😁👍

A great bar with three levels overlooking the market with a good mix of modern pub and historic vibes. 8 quality hand pump beers, including Landlord Dark makes it a winner!

Top notch craft beer venue near the Shambles York. Set over three floors with nice views onto the market square. The pizzas are fantastic and freshly prepared and cooked in the kitchen which can be viewed on the first floor. Great selection of kegged and cask beers. Can't wait for a repeat visit. Totally relaxed atmosphere. 5*

Beautiful pub/eaterie overlooking the Shambles market.

Visited frequently. Not able to sit upstairs as reserved for large party which is fair enough. Sat downstairs and watched 50 people arrive, all with backpacks in a crowded bar and order one drink at a time. Went to order pizza but informed more than an hour wait due to large party. Now I get that business from event important but please ask to order in advance or have extra staff or have thought about it in any way beforehand because short term revenue won't make up for loss of long term customer base.

We enjoyed a drink here in the afternoon. And managed to get a table on the 1st floor by the windows overlooking the market square.

Great love going in there when in york

We were looking for some great pizza in the city centre and we found it here. Thin crust style: the bottom layer was crispy not floppy, and the edges were thick and fluffy without being burnt. Yum!

I had an amazing time at this lovely lively place. Lots of different opinions for drinks and very good larger on draft. I went for the pizza for my food, it was full of flavour and decent for the price

Serving a variety of beers from a local brewery and delicious food, the Market Cat is a great place for a pint and a view (if you can manage to snag a table on the top floor). Sitting right at the corner of the Shambles Market, this is a great location and a recommended pub for people watching and enjoying a pint. It's not quiet but that's why you come here.

We visited both nights of our stay and were really impressed with both the drinks and the service. Will definitely recommend to anyone visiting York! Also, the tunes were class.

Male bar tender is rude. Should probably find a job doing something that doesn't envolve serving the public.

Great bar, wouldn't expect anything less from Thornbridge. Great range of their beers and a few others and the Pizzas are fantastic.

Great place for a drink. The staff are super friendly, the atmosphere is great and everything is reasonably priced. The food was the only thing that let down the experience. The tomato garlic bread was so bland. It lacked any flavour and tasted like tomato puree. Would recommend for drinks only

Didn't have any food here but we tried a good selection of the Thornbridge Ales, which were all excellent. Only negative was that the lift was out of order and the only toilets are two flights of stairs up. However, it's a lovely modern bright pub with very friendly staff!

Beer selection was good and well kept. The pizza's were excellent. The only minor criticism is that the gents was a long old hike, three floors up. A nice spot for a break and a bite to eat in the heart of York's shopping area.

A nice place to buy different things

It's not always easy, as a foreigner, to understand the English pub experience. This establishment, however, does its very best to show one what it is like. Would definitely recommend!

This review is because of the price of their wine, and the underhand nature it was done. I asked for 2 large glasses of red, and was charged 18 pounds. I baulked at this a little at first, as it is just a bar, not a restaurant despite the pizzas. However I paid it. I took them back as the amount looked small and enquired if this was a large glass of wine. I was told no, they don't do large glasses of wine, only medium. I was not told this when I ordered it, hence the underhandedness. So, £18 for 2 medium wines. That merits a 2 star review. Otherwise the place is as ok as any other bar that sells food in York

Nicely decorated, clean and reasonably priced. We arrived early evening, so the wait for food & the bar was very short. Pizza was very nice, perfectly cooked and good quality ingredients. Great selection of lots of different types of alcoholic drink. From upstairs there’s a great view over lively Shambles Market.

Good local lager from Elvington. A view of the Minster from the quieter third floor.

Lovely place with really great beer, overlooking the market. It has huge windows which fully open, making it very pleasant when outside is baking hot. Excellent staff. I wish I'd been able to stay longer and will definitely return.
