Oh what a lovely place this is. It is old fashioned in quite the nicest sense of the phrase. The staff are friendly and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. Spotlessly clean. It was obviously a meeting place for local people and we could see why. We had tea and tea cakes, which were reasonably priced and delicious. We were quite sorry we were only visiting for the day, as hubby and I really liked the look of the rest of the menu. Very much well worth the visit.

For the life of me I do not understand the fuss and the rave reviews about the cafe. They must be from America, Germany and Japan. Quaint it is not, run down it is not, it is a very old part of a very old market from a bygone era, in other words it is dated. However, the owners have indeed embraced the aura of Stan Laurels hometown. The food is nothing special, moreover they do not claim it to be, it does not represent good value. Having said that Ulverston, as a collective does not give value for money, especially on the food front, except for The outstanding Stan Laurel pub and restaurant, but that is a for another review. Back to the Market Cafe, Beanz on toast, 2 cups of tea and a sausage barm, £10.50, flippin £10.50. I could count the beanz on my plate! the sausage barm well, forget it. Money for old rope, the sooner they get some stern competition(Wetherspoons) the better, but that is going to happen any time soon.

We were visiting from the States and found this cafe, which is located inside an indoor market, similar to an indoor swap meet in the States. We parked in the public parking and walked through a few short blocks to get there. There are few tables inside and out but had no problem getting a table. There is a lot to choose from but we had a traditional English breakfast— which is served until 12. We all chose a different hot drinks: latte (milky coffee), mocha, hot chocolate and black coffee. There were also a number of pastries to choose from. They allowed us to modify our eggs which was nice. It came with eggs, tomatoes, toast, sausage, English bacon, baked beans, and black pudding. Service was good, food was excellent and the cafe atmosphere was quaint and comfortable. Fair prices overall and definitely worth the stop. There are many shops in the neighborhood, only regret was we couldn’t stay longer to explore.

Went for afternoon tea. The service was very good from the lady serving us. £10 each for a pot of tea, a bowl of soup, a huge sandwich of your choice, a scone with butter jam and cream, 3 cakes and some little side crisps. While we were waiting gave my daughter some toys to play with while we tucked into our soup. Was really nice, I've not had pea and mint before but really enjoyed it. Sandwich was nice but wasn't keen on the crusty loaf. Boxed the rest up for us as they were shutting and we didn't want to delay them.

I came here for the first time with my mum a week or so ago. The cafe has a cute and cosy feel with lovely decor. There was a good selection on the menu considering the cafe is only small. We both ordered the large breakfast with tea, £6.50 each. Tea came in a large mug but was not as milky as we usually would have it - not a big problem but would have been nice to have been asked. Very pleased with the cooked breakfast, everything tasted great, toast was lovely and thick and will likely return if and when we are in the area at breakfast or lunch time.

We used to frequent the Market Cafe quite regularly but of recent haven't been so often, our last visit we thought hadn't been for a while, but when the owner said she had been here nearly 3 years and it was a previous owner when we visited we couldn't believe we had left it so long. Decked out in what I can only describe as reminiscent of a 50's Ice cream parlour it is fresh and welcoming and a lovely place to eat. It was for breakfast we had come so breakfast we ordered, hubby had the large breakfast which came on a big oval plate (basically it had extra sausage, bacon and tomatoes on top of the normal one), and included lovely thick toast (not just run of the mill thin sliced loaf) and a mug of coffee, I opted for the normal sized breakfast, I had been contemplating just a bacon butty and coffee but when I totted up the price of that it made more sense to have the full breakfast which included bacon, sausage, black pudding, mushrooms, beans, proper fried tomato (no tinned tomatoes here!) and fried egg along with thick toast and mug of coffee. All the food was well made, although we did have quite a wait for it, freshly made always comes with a wait though and we weren't in any hurry today. All in all these two meals (which as I said included the drinks) came to £11.40 (£6.20 for big and £5.20 for normal) and well worth the price. It won't be as long till our next visit.

Stopped here for lunch after shopping in Ulverston. Two couples who were hungry and we were not disappointed. The men had all day breakfasts, which were superb and we two ladies had the daily pie special, chicken, stuffing and cranberry, oh so very tasty. Choice of mash or chips, mushy or garden peas and a small jug of gravy. It was all so tasty and the pastry and chicken was melt in the mouth. Big pot of good tea and pot of hot water for top up too. Staff very friendly and service excellent. We will be back. Small but not cramped, advisable to reserve a table as very popular. Total bill was under £30.

Myself, mum and my 2yr old popped in here on discovering the cafe when exploring the market. It is such a gorgeous little 50’s styled cafe - the staff are extremely friendly and were very kind to my son who was given a toy to play with while he waited for his baby chino and mini sausage sandwich - the ‘kids’ menu is fantastic. It’s got a lovely atmosphere - you must seek it out if you visit Ulverston - even if not intending to visit the market itself. The menu is huge and full of heart warming puddings including apple pie and custard. Such a small space will warm you up on wintery days in the Lakes.

Went here with my son to treat him to a spot of afternoon tea. Drinks first-tea for me with an extra pot of hot water, my son didn't want tea or coffee so they accommodated him for hot chocolate with lots of cream on top! 2 cups of homemade blended cream of mushroom soup, followed by a sandwich each of our choice (tuna mayo and ham) served with crisps and coleslaw. The 2nd tier was a scone, little pot of clotted cream, jam and butter. The 3rd tier was a slice of shortbread, current cake and a chocolate sponge cupcake. I had a small breakfast consisting of sausage, bacon, egg, beans, tomato, black pudding, mushrooms and a choice of either toast or fried bread. It was cooked to perfection. My partner had a sausage, bacon and egg bun which filled him right up (he usually gets an extra burger at McDonald's!) and my son had a bacon bun that had so much bacon in that it should have oinked!! I might be biased, but I have my lunch here every day and it's great. I love the atmosphere, the banter and especially the scones and the Pie. It's everything you expect a Market Cafe to represent. Its quickly become a community spirited place to socialise and enjoy a treat or two. You see, I might be the owners Husband, but I don't cook any of it, so I am happy this is a fair review. Lynn always wanted her own small place to enjoy making people happy with food and drink and in a place that people could enjoy coming, a home from home feel if you like, a place people would return to time and time again because they knew that there was real passion to make everything right. She wanted to do simple British traditional hearty food, but do simple very well. She's done it, and I for one am proud of what she has achieved in such a short period of time. Keep up the good work. I even had different kinds of bread- believe me, this is wildly unusual for anything GF and I felt so special! All of the food was divine. I ate the lot, but totally regretted the sugar rush later on when I had a two hour drive home :-) Everything was perfect - the best afternoon tea I’ve ever had!

Whilst trying to amuse my two young son's on a recent visit to Cumbria I took them to the vintage farm. And while that itself is great the real highlight was The Chicken Shed cafe on the site. The food is lovely with the homemade cakes being among the best I have ever tasted. The lady who runs the place is a great host and when my 9 year old cheekily asked for a beer she passed him a bottle of child friendly shandy that made his day. There's also a wide variety of homemade ice cream available which was music to the ears of my 6 year old (and me). Even if you don't fancy visiting the farm itself the food and hospitality at The Chicken Shed is worth seeking out.
