Loved our experience at Base. A joy to spend relaxed time over wonderful, exciting, delicious food - the lamb especially was out of this world. Highly professional and friendly service which could not be faulted - special thanks to Abbi and her team for helping make our night super special! Will return for sure :-)

Lunch here was underwhelming. There is a claim that this is a scratch kitchen. I saw a chef carrying packets of shop-bought flatbreads from the lock up. They had a slightly stale taste. A scrape of cream cheese and a sprinkle of rocket didn’t do much to elevate the bland trencher. The smoked salmon was fine, nothing special. Something I could disappoint myself with in my own kitchen. My wife’s ham hock 2cheese was better but saltier than me right now. MiL’s prawns were ok. Kids meal was fine. Nothing was great. For £50 it was a total rip off. Service staff were lovely. Atmosphere was fine. It’s just a park cafe with notions. You’d be better off spending your money elsewhere.

We booked Base for our wedding celebration and I'm so glad we did. There were 40 of us eating and we selected a 4 course meal which was absolutely divine. The food was served promptly and tasted delicious. You could tell a lot of time and effort went into the meal and the event as a whole. The meal surpassed our expectations and all our guests commented on how nice the food was over the following week. We are looking forward to planning a return visit with just my husband and I! Huge thanks to Mark and team ☺️

A celebratory lunch out following the birth of our second daughter. Base offers a welcoming and comfortable setting for lunch. The food was incredible, we had king prawns & squid to start, Both excellent dishes. For mains we had mussels and steak, again both excellent and cooked beautifully. They also have a lovely range of drinks and nice coffee. We are already excited to head back for another meal.

Excellent spot for breakfast. Ambience is calm, smart, professional. Service with a genuine smile. The food is comforting and laid out with aplomb. Only been at breakfast but it looks a quality Ulverston establishment.

Highly recommended!. We visited the surrounding area in October whilst on a weeks break and came across this hidden gem on a walk around Hoad Hill and we popped in for breakfast. We returned on Saturday night for the taster menu which was superb-delicious, locally sourced food in a relaxed, cosy atmosphere. We will certainly be back. What a great find. Back to Base for another fabulous evening with the last day of the Christmas menu. As usual, everything was first rate, we have eaten very well locally and Base compares with the best. Mark's imagination and skills in the kitchen are only matched by the care he takes over every guest - my wife has all manner of food allergies which are always wonderfully catered for. I brought my Dad for his birthday treat and was absolutely blown away by the food and the staff. All seven courses from the Christmas menu were just amazing and eat every last morsel of each. Thankyou for your concern with Dad's alcohol allergy, We managed to get through the night without too much sneezing !! Amazing food, atmosphere and experience at Base. The chef is amazing and with an open kitchen you can watch his skills. The staff are wonderful and very informative about the different courses and ingredients. We also had the wine paring which was also lovely. Overall a fabulous night.

4 PUDDINGS!! Yes. Last night, I had 4 puddings! Base Pudding Club was absolutely brilliant! The two savoury courses were awesome but all 4 puddings were amazing and I was in heaven! I hope they do another Pudding Club night as I’ll be the first at the door! Mojito Sorbet, Chocolate Bavarois, Rosy Apple and Lemon Fool. We’ve been here a few times before and the food is always excellent but it seems to be getting better every time we visit. Nice to find out last night that this place is dog friendly during the day too so we will be back for lunch!

A memorable meal - our fifth visit and it just gets better. Great care and attention to each dish with good flavours and imaginative use of ingredients. Spiced parsnip veloute was a revelation, the rabbit croquette really tasty, amazing halibut and two glorious sweets! Would highly recommend.

Excellent service, emailed Mark the chef about vegetarian starter preferences and he tailored the offering. Service was attentive but not too fussy. I'd have given 5 for the atmosphere as the vibe was really chilled but music is very important to me so would have preferred instrumental background music (that's subjective & such a first world problem!). We had a great night and totally recommend this place.

I was quite underwhelmed sadly. We turned up for our reserved table and the waitress shouted something to us at the door, but as she was shouting it across to us she had turned her back so we didn't make out what she was saying at first but it turned out she was saying basically sit where you want! We could see our names on the reserved table so was slightly confused by the situation. The food was OK but not to the standard wed hoped based on reviews we'd read. The reviews unfortunately didn't match the experience and we were hoping to try the evening menu with some friends but based on the lunch experience won't bother now. The lack of experience of the waiting staff is definitely letting the restaurant down, it didn't feel genuine. We were asked if our food was OK a few minutes after it was served but the waitress had her back to us and was half way back on the restaurant by the time she'd finished asking us so felt it was insincere and she was just asking for the sake of asking. We'd hoped that it was going to be really good but unfortunately it was just average and over hyped. The final point to note was that we'd made a reservation at 1:30pm for a relaxing afternoon lunch on a special occasion, and an hour later the staff were locking up and we still had half a bottle of wine to finish!

Once again an outstanding evening at Base. Mark and his team offer an evening of fantastic customer service and really wonderful food. Went for the evening tasting menu and it was full of flavour, both of us loved the gazpacho, full of flavour and with a hint of heat. There are too many good dishes to mention but the other that stood out was the S’mores, fun and messy to eat and a fine dining version of a camp fire classic. With Mark leading the kitchen and Abi leading front of house the have built an unrivalled team that never disappoint. We love to eat out in many restaurants but Base brings me back time and again and always will do, whether for a fantastic dinner or a casual lunch.

Truly horrendous experience and treatment at Base Restaurant from the owner & chef who called the police on us and refused to let us leave. Please see details below… Last night my family visited Base Restaurant for my sisters birthday. When we arrived, the 5 of us were attempted to be seated on a table for 4. This was not a suitable seating arrangement, with my 70 year old Dad squashed in the middle of my Mum and sister. When we asked if my Dad could move to sit at the end of the table instead, we were told this would not be possible due to the waitresses needing access to another table. The owner/chef came over and made no attempt to offer a solution or provide an alternative seating arrangement. My Dad said if there was not a suitable seat for him to sit in he would have to leave. The chef agreed and my Dad left the restaurant. When we came to pay for the meal, we had been charged for 5 people rather than 4. Assuming this was an error, I went to pay and informed them we had been incorrectly charge for 5 people. The owner/chef then informed me we would still have to pay full price for my Dad (£54.95) even though he had to leave due to not having a suitable seat and not having eaten a thing (he left approx 30-45mins before the first course being cooked). When I told him I was not going to pay for my Dad, he said that he would not let us leave until we had paid and that he would call the police as it was theft. I agreed he should call the police as it was clear to me we needed some form of mediation. I waited 10-15mins while he called the police, who informed him no theft had been occurred as no food had been served or eaten. He then continued to insist I pay him for a deposit of ~£20, again I refused as my Dad was unable to eat anything and he had not taken a deposit on booking. We then proceeded to argue the case for approximately 30mins with neither side backing down. This was in front of a table of 4 who were still in the restaurant, which was highly unprofessional. The owner/chef continually refused to take a payment for the 4 of us who actually ate, so I said you have left me no option than to leave. He then moved to stand in front of the exit in an attempt to block us leaving. It was at this point I got my phone out to start to record the audio as I was concerned what was going to happen next. He eventually took the payment after calling us childish and saying we were not welcome back (trust me, we would no be going back anyway..) The experience left me shaken and anxious. This man has an absolute inability to take any for of accountability or critique. This will be evident in his response to this feedback, where he will attempt to explain away the issue and put it all onto my family. This was a truly terrible experience caused by a man who has the worst customer service skills I have ever experienced.

Went to the Base restaurant in Ulverston for an expensive family meal it was an appalling experience. They seated 5 of us round a table for 4 people which was far to small and would not move my chair when there was lots of room....

Nice food and good service. However, my experience as a vegan was disappointing. There were two breakfast options listed on the menu as 'can be made vegan'. But on enquiry, it turned out that one of these couldn't actually be made vegan. I ordered the other option but to make it vegan they just removed the egg and charged the same price, meaning I paid nearly £9 for mushrooms on toast. It was a shame as it could've been a great experience with a bit more thoughtfulness.
