I have just got home after a lovely stay here. I came with my son. my mum and her partner stayed here the same night in another room. My room was fab and spacious, had everything I needed for an overnight stay. My bathroom had a shower and bath which was a bonus. My room was plenty big enough for my cot which I brought. And had loads of space for clothes ect. (Anyone travelling with a baby knows how much stuff they need) . the lady on reception said not many kids or babies stay in the hotel ( not that they dont allow them). So it's a lovely quiet hotel. My breakfast was lovely and they even had soy milk for my sons breakfast. They have a small bar but I didn't use this.

Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Aynsome Manor - an establishment we first visited over 30 years ago. Many memories, including excellent food and an atmospheric dining room with candles. Whilst no doubt much has been carefully updated, the quality of the food, the attentive and personalised service, and the traditional dining room are constants. One detail I particularly appreciated was the wide choice of very good house wines by glass, quarter, half and full carafe, which made matching wines to food easy.A great, and surrisingly good value fine dining experience - we loved it

The owner is very knowledgeable and keen to share details of the history of the house. Small choice on the menu but the food was excellent. Kidneys for starter and one of the best steaks I have ever had as a main course, we asked to pause a while and then tackled the sticky toffee pudding, light and delicious, definitely the best we have ever had, but a big portion, I’m afraid we had to leave some! Myself, partner and 2 friends were staying at the Aynsome Manor park and decided to walk over for a New Years drink at around 9:30pm to the Aynsome Manor. On walking towards the door, a member of staff rudely shut the door when first seeing us. We then walked into the manor to be told very abruptly that we had to leave due to the event being ONLY for residents. We didn't mind not being able to have a drink at the manor but it was in the way we were told that was distasteful. The member of staff was rude and condescending and abruptly shut the door on us. I then went on to say that we were residents at the Aynsome park to which he responded that that was nothing to do with him and told us ( in a very patronising tone) that we need to go to town and also need a flashlight to walk around the park. The member of staff made us feel like we were scum and not worthy of the manor which I have stayed at many a times. I will NEVER be returning to the manor after this experience and am so disappointed in what has happened.

The title hopefully says it all. From the moment you walk in the reception is warm, courteous and intent on providing just the right amount of care and attention. The dining room is not overly big in size but big in it's opulence and envelops you in it's warm friendly atmosphere of your fellow diners enjoying themselves with the knowing smile that they and only they have found a gem. The food is excellent, well cooked , beautifully presented and not pretentious as in some places where the theatre of the way the food is presented is more important than the food itself. Aynsome Manor has thought about the balance and comes firmly down on the customers side . Excellent service, excellent value.

The family who own Aynsome Manor are obviously very hard working and proud of their hotel. The public areas are beautifully appointed and dressed with lovely antiques and there are many interesting architectural features.Dinner and breakfast was served in a lovely dining room and was presented very well. Dinner was particularly well cooked and ingredients locally sourced, my lamb, cooked pink, was particularly good. The reason that this is not a five star review is that the bedroom was a little "tired" and in need of updating. Pictures on the wall were faded to blue and the shower had no screen and the shower head wouldn't stay in position. We had stayed at a similar sized country house hotel for dinner, bed and breakfast, the previous week and the price was only £2 different, yet the bedrooms, and particularly the bathroom were much nicer.I hope the owners of the Aynsome accept this as constructive comment as on the whole our stay was lovely and it was obvious that they have many returning loyal guests and I would certainly recommend friends and family to visit.

The last night on a major road trip we decided to treat ourselves to a little bit of luxury. We took a room and dinner. Arrival was nice if the location made it a little awkward to find. Proper old style service on arrival. A nice room, access to other drawing rooms and bar. After booking well in advance on the internet we received a very courteous email asking if we'd like to make a reservation for dinner. We didn't reply for a while but when we did it was sorted without fuss. Glad we did, it was fantastic, the menu looked amazing, some real hard decisions. I wasn't disappointed with my choice. Service was good from the pre-dinner drinks all the way through to the end of the 3 courses that we opted for. The centre of Cartmel was walkable although not always on a pavement. Lovely walk though on a summers day and the centre of the village is charming. It wasn't cheap. But things like this aren't. Other residents lovely, we were of the less mature vintage compared to most but there was not going to be anything particularly stand offish about anyone. Breakfast was good, you can always judge a breakfast I think by the standard of the sausage. This was good sausage.

We decided to walk to this restaurant from the centre of Cartmel, but quickly realised that it was further out than it looked from the maps. Not a good start! But we were met by Chris, the man in charge this night, and he assured us he would drive us back to the hotel after our meal. Fantastic. The food matched the service. First a starter that was a joy to my taste buds - chicken livers poached in a cognac sauce housed in a cup of filo. Brilliant. This was followed by roasted sirloin cooked to perfection, with a fine array of vegetables. Conservative perhaps, but the best food, by far, we encountered on our stay in Cartmel, a magic village within easy reach of the lakes.

We visited as a party of Seven and perhaps were the only non residents there but from start to finish it was a very pleasant experience. I had booked a couple of weeks earlier and spoken to the owner who was very obliging in moving things around to accommodate us at the time that suited us. A lot of comments give the impression that it is old fashioned but it is actually totally in keeping with the surrounding area. There is something about Crystal and Silver service that adds to the experience in my opinion. You can expect polite and professional attentive service, but not fussy or over the top. Those that manage the place are professionals and take the time to engage with their customers (if that's what you want) rather than just serve them food. The menu is changed daily and seems to reflect local produce , a weekday evening meal fixed price menu of either 2,3 or 4 courses included starters of homemade soup, mussels or pork with a main including Guinea fowl or an excellently prepared Beef sirloin. All in all it represents good "old fashioned value" and "old fashioned values"Well done to all at Aynsome manor , keep it up.

We cannot recommend Aynsome Manor too highly. We had a bedroom in a building across the courtyard, downstairs was a huge lounge room, all very comfortable. Staff were all lovely and so helpful. One caveat, it's a good mile's walk from Cartmel along a road with no footpaths so if you plan to walk into the village in the evening take a torch. But why bother when all this grandeur is a short walk away!

We were staying at the hotel and dined in on two nights. On both occasions, the food and service were top quality. Some reviews mention that the menus are a bit old-fashioned, but for us this means good quality, good quantity and personable service. If you want emulsions, jus, smoke and other gimmicky additions, then L'Enclume is just up the road. The staff could not be more helpful and friendly and we had two delightful evenings in the restaurant, repairing to the lounge for coffee by the fire - lovely.

You know you've arrived somewhere special when someone you've never met before greets you by name as you walk through the door! It's like stepping back in time. What a lovely place. We were seated with drinks in comfy chairs by the fire whilst our table was prepared and then taken through to a fabulous dining room. Unfortunately the food was also reminiscent of the seventies & wasn't quite up to the high standard of the service. The pheasant was overcooked & dry and the accompanying vegetable platter quite dull. Nothing inedible, just boring. Fortunately, the accompanying wine was great. The lemon posset pudding tho was lovely. All in all we had a lovely evening and felt quite pampered and calm whilst there and away from the bustle of Cartmels busy pubs. A great place to chill and be looked after.

This was our first time at Aynsome Manor for Sunday lunch, although we do go often for dinner. As always the service was attentive and friendly from start to finish. We had pre-lunch drinks by a roaring fire before going through to the lovely dining room, properly laid up with white cloths, napkins and good quality glassware. The view over the countryside is gorgeous. The meal was very good with plenty of choices from the table d'hote menu which consisted of four courses at an extremely reasonable price. Coffee and petit fours are taken in the guest lounges. A lovely experience and a real treat.

Did not stay at the premises but while staying in the area decided to have an evening meal here as looked like a special treat from reviews on Trip Advisor. Booked no problem for a table for two. I think we were the only none residents dining that evening but not treated any differently to those that were. Service was excellent and food terrific in very comfortable surroundings.

Having eaten at L'Enclume and Rogan and Co, came here for Sunday dinner. Like going back in time, The dining table was all set up with cut glass wine glasses and starched napkins. The staff, service and meal were all great, served up in what some people may described as "in an old fashioned manner", but I would say it is "good traditional manner"

My husband and I were in the Cartmel area for a week and wanted to eat in a fine dining establishment with a good reputation. A local butcher recommended Aynsome and we were certainly not disappointed. The service was top notch and the meal was excellent with a friendly and attentive Maître d'hôtel and a French server. When I saw pheasant on the menu I decided that it was the day to try something new. It was succulent, moist and tasty. My companion had the roast beef, and was asked how he liked his roast beef. First time in England! The local speciality, the sticky toffee pudding dessert was the best, ever!

Thank god I am not that old but I'm sure if you would have dined here fifty years ago and returned in 2014 very little would have changed. That comment is not intended to be critical for the Aynsome Manor has all the empathy and atmosphere of another era.An era based on service, quality, manners, silver service. You could be in a gentlemens club in Mayfair, the Royal Hotel in Bath anywhere where proper people of a certain age socialise to drink tea and eat well presented generously proportioned well cooked food.Far far away from modern pubs serving fast food.If you are in cartmel you will need to make a reservation and need your car to find it as it is well off the beaten track but it does offer the best value for money in the village and that includes the top rated L'Enclume.

We were fortunate enough to have a gift voucher given to us for a 4 course Sunday lunch for two. We booked it to coincide with another trip we were taking to The Lake District, not really knowing anything about the venue except being told that 'it's very good.'What an understatement! It was without a doubt a superb dining experience. The food throughout the courses was cooked and presented to perfection, and the service was first class. The atmosphere in the hotel in general, and the beautiful dining room in particular, is one I have rarely experienced with silver-service dining - a combination of friendly, formal, and relaxed. We will certainly dine there again in the not-too-distant future.

The food is fabulous but this hotel has never heard of portion control. The older generation tend to eat less and many times food was left on the plate and side orders of vegetables only partly consumed. Wasted food equals lost profit and I fear this has been the case for many years as there have been few changes to a very long established tradition.

We came to Cartmel and stayed here on Saturday 11th May as a treat for my husband. It is a very welcoming and homely manor house hotel. All the staff were very attentive and pleasant; the service and attention to detail is excellent. It is spotlessly clean and our bedroom very comfortable perhaps a little dated in decor only disappointment was that the water was not really warm enough this morning to have a bath. What really sets this apart is the fantastic food. Every course offered was memorable. The dining room is a lovely Georgian room and the food and wine offered is superb; our breakfast this morning was delicious. There is a lovely upstairs sitting room with great views. We decided to read the paper there this morning just after breakfast around 9.30/10am but that experience was spoiled by it being vacuumed within 10 minutes of us sitting in there. I moved downstairs and within five minutes that area was being vacuumed too so we gave up. That is a small point because we had a lovely stay and I thoroughly recommend it and would love to come back.

My wife and I ate here over the Easter weekend and we were pleased we did. From the moment we walked through the door nothing was too much trouble. The food menu was well thought out and the quality was of a very high standard. The wine menu was also well selected and sensibly priced. The service was some of the best I have ever experienced, personal yet not over bearing, attentive and sincere. If you are looking for a special night out I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant. You’ll find it hard to find better service anywhere and the food is also very good. It’s a classical experience, you peruse the menu while having a pre-dinner dink and then you are shown your table as the starter is ready, service is unrushed giving you time to relax and enjoy the surroundings and atmosphere.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

By coincidence we had two meals at Aynsome recently: one lunch and one dinner. I feel I would like to write a longer review to give it justice, but I can still do it later. I am also looking forward to going there again. The moment you enter you feel you are being looked after. The atmosphere and the service are of the kind I have not seen very much at all elsewhere: both polite and friendly, but not over the top - and if ever so slightly so - then there is good humour in the background. It is a family run place and it is very easy to see that. Comfortable and stylish interiors, elegant lounges and dining room, crystal glasses, candle light, beautifully set tables with rows of cutlery and glasses stylishly arranged, all adds up to create an atmosphere of luxury and continuity you will not find in that many places, unless you pay a lot more, and even that I am not so sure about. The place is traditional and elegant, but not stuffy. The menu is varied, but not excessively long - a very good sign, indicating that all is prepared fresh and under full control of the chef. The wine list - comprehensive and skillfully selected. The house wines are of very good quality, and nothing is overpriced (in our collective view). What did we have? Between us we had shrimps, roast beef, fish, goat cheese terrine, tomato and roast pepper soup, several desserts - not a single dish was below the delicious mark, nothing was overcooked or done not just right. What I cannot understand is how the owners manage to offer the prices they do for what you get there. If there was 6* mark for value - it would go to Aynsome Manor. What I liked best? Pretty much everything. What I liked least? If I wanted to I could not fault a single aspect of our two visits. I have to finish writing this now, but I would like to end with the my highest recommendations.

Really great hotel, we stayed in the family room with our 1 year old. We were unsure if it would be child friendly. However, the staff were very kind and helpful, there was a lovely cot waiting in our room, with beautiful blankets for the baby. A high chair was already set up at the table in the mornings. Breakfast and dinner were delicious, and the menu changes every day. Very impressed by the high standard of lovely food, and good portions. Breakfast was quite quiet so it would be diffficult if you have very noisy children. We were given the option of having breakfast earlier then the standard time which is set at 8.30, slightly too late for most children. There is an option for high tea for children in your room. The surrounding countryside is lovely. Most of all it still is really family run, and the owners take time to chat and make you welcome. Would definitely go again, even just for the food.
