The Mariner Bar and Restaurant Newcastle in Dumfries & Galloway

We live in Newcastle and hadnt tried the Mariner.. superb food with great seafood options that are lacking elsewhere in Newcastle, great staff, great service, strongly recommend

Called in this week for a meal with my family we were greeted by a young waitress recall her name being Danielle I think who got us seated and give us menus. from the get go she was on the ball got our order very quick, made us feel really welcome. Our food came out and was delicious, service and atmosphere all 10/10 will definitely be back. Great job guys

Came in mid afternoon mid week. Maybe 3 tables in the place occupied. Waited 10 minutes for menus and eventually had to ask for them. After a while had to ask if we ordered at the bar as none of the 3 members of staff behind the bar approached us for our order. One main missing when the food came out -* again waited and had to go up to the bar to ask for it. Once more had to ask at the bar for pepper and condiments. Seafood chowder was watery and had no potato as advertised. Waited for mains to be cleared to order desert no no avail and got up once more to ask at the bar for the bill. Shocking service and less than impressed with the food. Would not recommend or return

Took my mother and two daughters for lunch. On entering the mariner there was only three tables taken by other customers. We were seated quickly and our order was taken within 15 minutes. As we sat and watched other customers come in, get their tables and their food before us, pay and then leave. We eventually got up and asked the man behind bar, if there was a problem. My mother was greeted with a rather rude witness stating there was other people Infront of us and we would just have to wait. Two very hungry children waiting over an hour to receive their luke warm lunch. Very disappointed

Me and my family felt underwhelmed by the food on this occasion, the hosting was fabulous, But Wouldn’t return again, well choose a different restaurant next time we’re in Newcastle.

Okay restaurant above a bar/pub. First impressions could be better but once upstairs, if seated near the front, nice and tidy. Food above average and although manager/owner was friendly, the waitress who served us needs to develop a personality and learn how to smile….may be better suited to a different career! Reasonable value, taking everything into account, average.

Definitely would recommend this place for a meal . We were downstairs as we had a small dog with us , food ( All 3 courses ) were of a very good standard and reasonably priced.

My husband & I were recommend to call at the Mariner bar Newcastle restaurant for food & entertainment. We were staying at the beautiful Slieve Donard & called in to check it out on Sunday evening . What a great night we had .As soon as we arrived we were greeted by Sarah the manager her friendly hospitality all evening was amazing lighting candles & a cosy fire chatting to us showing the beautiful restaurant upstairs with amazing sea views. To complete our evening we were entertained by a 5 piece band called the Jail birds who play every Sunday evening they were great & again they were chatting 2 the customers making everyone feel welcome . Mariner bar & restaurant is definitely a hiddden gem in Newcastle Co.Down & we will definitely be back 😋

How this gets rated number 1 in Newcastle is beyond me! When we walked in we noticed an awful stale smell and as walking up the stairs the place was filthy, should have turned around and walked out there and then but wanted to give it a chance as it’s rated “number 1”. The bar manager came over to take our order with food all over their face, waited nearly 2 hours for our food which I might understand if it was very busy but the place was empty and when the food finally arrived there was about 6 scampi on our plate with a bowl of chips, we were still starving afterwards! In future I’ll not be trusting trip advisors recommendations as this was an awful experience and ruined our day out!

3 generation, 6 people had varied and tasty fare. We were served by Steve who was helpful humorous and entertaining. We had scampi, chicken wings, sea bass and the famous chowder. Washed down with either Guinness or wine. A great view topped off a memorable family evening.

Beautiful bar food great choice, portions substantial and the staff were friendly and helpful highly recommended. Great location with a lovely sea view.

Came in for my mums birthday and absolutely amazing food and service, Grace was an outstanding server and my mum wouldn't be a big eater but she cleared her plate! Our table had the fish, the featherblade and chicken stacks and it was all top class! :) we will be back

Had booked ahead and sat in bar as accessible and had dog. It was Easter weekend but they seemed terribly understaffed. We waited over an hour for our meals. The staff who were there were flat out. 2 in party we’re happy with meals when they eventually came but the Korma was terrible - nothing resembling or tasting like a korma. Very disappointing. I think I’d give this place another go if in the area.

From the off, warm welcome, efficient and helpful staff. Having elderly mother with us, with level 6 diet, the chap serving us obviously got the memo, as they say. Didn’t even have to ask and mum’s food was chopped up ready for her. Our doggo was also very impressed with treatos and water bowl delivered to the table (or rather the floor). A really good vibe downstairs, tables interacting with each other, everyone chatting.. loved it… oh the food to top class too.. bravo Mariners 10/10

We went on a Thursday and were warmly welcomed by stevie. He explained the full menu and served us quickly. We had soup and sandwiches and my toddler had a kid’s carbonara. I believe the Chef was Paddy. It was absolutely lovely! Would definitely return!

Had a lovely meal this evening the waiter was very attentive and friendly , food was delicious and reasonably priced would definitely recommend.

We visit here any time we are in Newcastle for food and I couldn’t fault the place. We take the dog with us as it’s dog friendly and the staff are super friendly. The food and service is excellent, Kate and Steve in particular are very nice! Would recommend!

Myself, husband and daughter came into the Mariner on a cold windy day. It was cosy and warm inside, we decided to stay and have a bite to eat. We were not disappointed, our daughter had seafood chowder, she said it was the best she has ever had. My husband and I had fish and chips, also very delicious. We will certainly be back.

From start to finish this was the most beautiful meal. The location, the food and especially the staff and service. Sarah and her staff went above and beyond in everything they did. One of our party is coeliac and they were so attentive and helpful. In our group we had a baby and this is where they went above and beyond. It’s rare I would recommend somewhere so much but The Mariner is one of these places.

Stopped in for a pint and lunch. Blown away with the food and service. Steve and Kieran were so lovely and first class hosts while Johnny makes the BEST SEAFOOD CHOWDER EVER!!!! 100% recommend this little gem in the heart of Newcastle.

Went in on the off chance and how lucky was I! Huge portion of fresh caught, fresh cooked mussels with the best home made soda bread. Staff were so welcoming and so were other drinkers! Sadly, I had just scattered my late mother’s ashes and everyone was asking about her and drinking to her memory. Can’t see that happening back home in Kent.

Chose this place after reading reviews, we were not disappointed, greeted as soon as we stepped in, and treated very attentively for the rest of our visit. Staff were efficient and amusing, loved the place, and the food. Recommend the chowder.
