Sublime food, exquisite surroundings, slightly unnerving but I guess that's deliberate. Had the 6 for 60 menu and worth every penny. Thank you to Michael O'Hare for giving us experiences like this to look forward to.

Review for psycho sandbar - I came a few months ago but don’t seem to be able to leave a review for the new restaurant as it still says the man behind the curtain. The food was painfully overpriced and the restaurant was mostly empty, leading to an awkward atmosphere. I was so hungry after the food that I almost fainted on the way home. We were given a tiny brioche to share between two people - the portion size was laughable. Half of the dishes they didn’t have. Interestingly, the dishes unavailable were all of the cheaper options.

The house champagne cost £360. They didn’t warn us, offered us more then laughed their heads off when we got the bill. We were devastated. We couldn’t afford it but the obnoxious and ridiculously alternative’ staff smugly laughed and asked us to pay and leave. Food was gross too. Honestly what a horrible place

Review for Phyco Sandbar, not Man behind the curtain... Unbelievable food in a quirky environment with surprisingly friendly staff. Still unquestionably nuts like his last restraunt. This one is like Banksy has had a week on Crystal Meth and learned how to cook insanely good food. Definitely an experience worth trying!

Enjoyable meal, treat for daughter, included version of iconic fish and chips. Mr O’Hare was in building, as we sat in waiting area he arrived and.. disappeared behind the curtain behind reception. We have a copy of his ‘cookbook’, too big to cart up from Shropshire for signing so we asked if he’d sign menu instead; of course he couldn’t be arsed, by which I mean, there’s something about his persona that comes over on tv that gives off that vibe. It’s closed after New Year, maybe a chance for him to work himself out, recent comments suggest a problem. Having said all that the staff were fine, especially given they were about to be out of a job.

We were super excited. We love food, love good service and don’t mind paying. Group of 4 mid January. £1230. Service below average, facilities were poor. Smell of bleach. Food was fine, not even close to exceptional. Wine choice was appalling. Server told us all the wine in the list was dry, then served his suggestion which was a desert wine. . . Next bottle was as bad, we didn’t want to say. Two of the chefs were super helpful explaining what they cooked but clearly in a significant hurry and the acoustics didn’t allow us to hear what they said. Damn poor affair, poorly delivered, over stated and hugely overpriced. Sorry Michael, you really need to get this together, reputation only goes so far.

Disappointed but laughed about it afterwards 😂 Cold and uninviting, extremely small portions and wine package was not to each course. Not worth the cost at all! Pretentious BS! Eaten at restaurants all over the world with and without a Michelin star! This was the worst by far! An experience never to live again! If you don’t laugh about it though ….. which we did all the way home! Never again

First time here. Been on the wish list for a while. Got to say I was undecided on my experience. I was wanting to be blown away, but didn’t feel that. Was I expecting too much ? Atmosphere was serious, chilly and empty. Feel like I should have went years ago when it first opened. Went to blind swine in York many years ago, and got to say I enjoyed that soooo much more ! I know Michelin have rules, but comes at a cost. Would I go back. No. That’s not to say it’s bad, I’d just rather sample other restaurants at that price.

Such a cool experience everyone should visit once in their life if fortunate to. Me and my boyfriend had never done anything like this before and I kindly got vouchers for my birthday. It did cost the price of a European city break but was defo worth it for a rare treat. Such a unique experience and remained cool and hip rather than snobby. Staff were lovely and sooo knowledgeable about wines and each course. Chefs came out with certain courses. We felt very looked after. 100% reccommend

Man behind the curtain, more like hiding behind the curtain! Michael you do really need to sort your restaurant out, otherwise you will lose your Michelin star very quickly! Went here for my wife’s birthday, I knew it was closing for a refit, however the service was very basic and was only offered a reduced wine list, of which the first 3 wines we picked on the list were not available! The food was ok, but no where near the first time we went over a year ago. I would strongly suggest that you get a closer grip of your restaurant before you reopen in the new year! I’m afraid I will need to be more convinced from reviews to visit again, and if you bother to look at the last year’s reviews you will note that they have not been complimentary at all! I do wish you all the best but you really need to be more hands on if you want to keep standards as high as they used to be. I reluctantly paid the mandatory service charge as it was Christmas, but was not happy! Yours sincerely Gary Limbert

It’s was our 4th visit and unfortunately very disappointing. On arriving to the restaurant in the past they would sit you in the reception area and serve drinks prior to the meal very relaxing, however on our visit last week we were quickly shown to our table even though we arrived early and while opening my present from my husband had menus thrust at us and a speech, clearly wanted us to crack on! The food amazing as always but the wine is just a joke if not an absolute rip off! My husband did the prestige paring at £180 per person it was not worth it at all in fact I argue he was given anything better than the usual paring menu I mean a taste of champagne not even half a glass, a dribble of wine which one barely filled glass covered two courses! I myself went for wine by the glass at £20 a glass I was given well below a normal measure, if your staff cannot pour wine to measures then they clearly need the standard measuring equipment. The food is not cheap and all the effort is shown but to charge what they do for wine and offer a mouthful it leaves a very bad taste and we are u sure whether to ever go back. Sadly I wrote to client services about our experience and heard nothing back so clearly Michael your team do not appreciate or wish to hear bad feedback.

This is the third time we have come here. Let me start by saying the food is excellent as it always has been. However, below are a few reasons why this was the worst experience we have had at MBTC (any probably any Michelin star restaurant): - The waiters were disorganised and clearly the kitchen wasn't delivering on time. We waited for wine pairings to be provided for courses, and waited a long time for courses to be provided alongside the one pairings. All of the waiters barring one were new from a year ago (never a good sign). The one that was a seasoned veteran was almost running at one point to make sure we had the wine pairing on time. Kudos to him but he shouldn't have been put in that position. - The wine pairings themselves. They advertise 600ml, it was probably more like 450ml. There was massive variance between my serving size and my wife's. Not the end of the risk but when you pay just under £200 for an insignificant amount of wine, it leaves a bad taste in the mouth. - Speaking of a bad taste in the mouth. For the above reasons the experience wasn't perfect, however this was compounded when we spotted that they were offering tables for the same menu size at almost a third of the price we paid. There is no ability to cancel and rebook at a lower price because of the deposit. A bit outrageous to be honest. - And finally, Michael O'Hare was not there on the night. This is not the end of the world despite the fact that all three times we had been he hasn't been cooking. However, when we heard someone on an adjacent table say that they had been three times and had never had him in the kitchen it irked me. I get that he has a life and a family but seriously, what are the chances that this is pure unfortunate coincidence? Again, I would like to stress that the food was fantastic. However, clearly this restaurant is going through a significant period of change induced by negative factors about which we will remain unsighted. I love this restaurant and hope that the rebrand into early 2024 revitalises the experience.

What a great experience this was. I went with my wife as a treat (she retired that day) and we both loved it. Each dish was intriguing and PACKED with flavour. The flavour of the chilled "soup" was amazing - I could have finished a gallon of that. The duck - perfect, and the petit fours was something I wanted to eat as slowly as possible, just to savour it a bit longer. I could talk about every dish, but why spoil the surprise? Thanks, we'll be back.

First visit in 2021 was exceptional. Second visit booked as the restaurant is closing in its current format, I thought it would be nice to experience with my partner for the last time. The food was very good, up to normal standards; however it seems the service has significantly dropped off. Wait times in between courses were overly long, my partner was not being asked for drink top ups (she wasn’t drinking alcoholic drinks, I did the standard pairing) and when she did order it took far to long for her to be served (apologies received numerous times). Tables who came an hour after us caught us up and paid their bill at the same time. The ambient room temperature was also a little low, my partner did state to me she was cold during the course of the meal. All I’ll say, if you have previous positive memories of the restaurant, don’t bother coming along in its final weeks of opening, leave them in your memory bank… shame really.

Having heard that the concept is finishing at the end of this year, and this restaurant being on our food bucket list for many years, we moved schedules and booked travel from 200 miles away to experience this before it disappeared. It’s disappointing to say the least that the experience nowhere near made it worth the effort we put into getting here before it ends. The blonde man on the front desk/serving some courses was apathetic throughout the whole evening, bordering on hostile at times, we certainly didn’t feel welcome. There was a guy that served us with lots of tattoos and jewellery who was fantastic and really friendly and engaging however so compliments to him. We have dined at several Michelin starred restaurants and have to say this was the only one where we have left hungry. While the flavours of the dishes were fantastic, the amount of money people are paying, to leave hungry from a restaurant is unbelievable. The octopus and the duck dish were stand outs in terms of their flavour, while the Dali to Delhi prawn dish was lukewarm and that was probably the most disappointing dish. We felt looking at the reviews that we were potentially not served a few dishes that others have had in the recent past, the macarons for sure are one signature dish we did not get, we were also in and out within 90 mins which seemed very rushed for the experience and cost. Definitely the worst Michelin rated restaurant we have experienced, disappointing after having had such high expectations and anticipation for this. It feels like perhaps as they know they it is coming to an end, they feel no need to wow their customers any more.

Similar to the review below, I too though my it a wonderful restaurant with excellent staff and attention to detail… However… I love fine dining and I will pay to do so when I can. This was bittersweet as it was both a taste sensation yet a value disaster. Everything tastes absolutely incredible and the flavours can simply not be faulted. But when the first dessert appears you have to ask - seriously was that all I’m getting??? I’m paying a small fortune for literally 5 mouthfuls of food. Again the flavours cannot be faulted. It is pure genius. But you simply have to feed people to some degree - especially those who are willing to pay such extortionate prices. Lastly - I had the same experience as the previous reviewer…. I went to pay my bill and was presented with a bill that was at least £300 per couple more than what we had. When I questioned it, in a flash I was presented with a new bill that didn’t include the overcharge - but it was already in his hand when he gave me the overcharged bill!!! So basically they were going to try and charge me £300 more than we had - but happened to have another bill ready just in case I questioned it…. Things are absolutely awful financially in the hospitality industry at the moment. But nobody should morally resort to this as a safety net.

Let’s be clear, this is a phenomenal restaurant, top quality food. It’s closing at Christmas which might explain why it’s nowhere near as good as it was a year ago but the issue is that there appears to be an issue with their billing system. Our bill for 4 people was £400 more than it should have been. When questioned, the maitre d’ produced a correct bill, without apology, that appeared to have been pre-printed. When I recounted this story to a friend he exclaimed that exactly the same thing had happened to him. Maybe a lot of people who eat here are too wealthy to notice that there appears to be an error with their billing system. The staff appear aware given the pre-printing of the correct amount so I’m surprised they don’t remedy the issue.

This was a special birthday treat for my son. He is a chef and very interested in food. This experience did not disappoint. The food was incredible, and our taste buds were truly tantalised. The presentation was quirky and dramatic and added to this unique piece of food theatre. The Dali to Delhi tikka infused prawn was sublime. The flavours and presentation were as you would expect of a restaurant of this calibre. My favourite dish was Emancipation; the combinations of cod, ink, and vinegar were evocative of the seaside. Loved it. The Cantonese duck was similarly tasty, a bit like your favourite Chinese meal with a twist. The puddings were delicious. What really made this experience special (this was a rare treat and not something we can do frequently) was the staff. All the people we met were kind, professional, warm and genuinely passionate about what they do and were keen to share this. We were similarly eager to learn and really grateful for the efforts of the staff. This is no ordinary restaurant. If you are looking for cosy, familiar, and predicable, this is not for you. If you want to experience something different, eat food that you wouldn't rustle up yourself and enjoy the theatre, then you will enjoy this place. Many thanks Claire and Will

Dined here 6 months ago and it was excellent. Brought friends this time but this time was disappointing. The food actually was good. The duck was amazing, lobster was excellent. Prawn though needed a bit of heat and the garlic dish was not rated by any of us. What stands out about the service was that the sommelier served us a couple of wines and he actually told us he had nothing to say about them. Paying £95 for flights of wine the sommelier should have been a bit bothered. Final course of the tasting menu, the macarons, were not served to anyone in the restaurant. Why? Waiter rather abruptly told us that was the end of the meal. The waiter / sommelier when we were chatting later told us how there was going to be major changes in the restaurant after Christmas. Such changes should mean. the restaurant/ staff will get their fight back. Maybe that explains the service tonight Upon leaving the restaurant one of our party tripped on the step at the exit. Truthfully but foolishly the receptionist told us that people are always falling on that step when they leave. A legal case waiting to happen. £1100 for dinner for 4 should have been phenomenal. It wasn’t. I won’t go again and can’t recommend anyone else to go.

I received a very kind gift of a voucher for dinner for my partner and I, which I know was very expensive, we still somehow managed to spend nearly £200. The atmosphere is like being in a dentist’s waiting room in Victorian times. The food was good, but if you were trying to describe the saying “style over substance” to an alien, you would put them in here and tell them they owed £500 earth pounds for the pleasure. They have black toilet roll. They had wanky stupid stuff everywhere. It was soulless and I came out feeling like I had been somehow violated.

One of the best Michelin star restaurants we have ever been. What an amazing experience. We did lunch as we booked last minute for birthday celebration. Such a relaxing and upbeat atmosphere. Great service. Mind blowing dishes. We had both the wine and the juice...

We had the tasting menu and wine pairing. There is no getting away from the fact that this place is slightly bonkers... but you know that before you go. It is unpretentious and the food is really mind blowing. Whilst not to everyone's tastes, we...

Brilliant and generous wine pairing for the price! Started with a large glass of Krug!!! Sommelier was fantastic. The whole team were great and dishes were often presented by the kitchen staff which was lovely. Presentation and setting is really weird in a good way. The food, however doesn't feel up to the standard of the restaurant itself. The presentation was always outrageous and brilliantly fun, however the flavours and execution felt inconsistent. Most dishes arrived lukewarm, and there weren't many standout memorable dishes for flavour. Could also be more generous with portions, for example they bring out a huge tray of macaroons, but only let you have two each. No bread provided either. The crockery was outstanding! Still good value for money though for what we paid and a really fun experience from start to finish. I'd recommend for a very fun experience, but the food itself wasn't unique or delicious enough to match the quality of presentation.

It'd been several years since we'd been to The Man Behind the Curtain - before it had moved from above Flannels to below it in fact. We were delighted to find that the experience and quality of food were as good as they'd been before. Ahead of our meal we enjoyed a delicious Vermouth and snacks in the lounge area before being escorted to our table for the meal proper to begin. As when we'd visited previously each of the dishes was fantastic with Emancipation once again being a highlight. The duck dish that followed it was equally good. Service was excellent and at a nice, leisurely pace so the meal never felt rushed. The surroundings and music were as impressive as ever and it was just a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend an evening. Hats off to Michael O'Hare.

From start to finish the whole experience was incredible. You’re taken on a food journey, with surprises, colour and very tasty food. It was like eating art. The staff are lovely, really friendly and welcoming. It’s expensive but I wasn’t surprised, happy to pay that price for this experience. Just wow.

This has to be one of leeds finest and most creative dining experiences ever. I’ve eaten at TMBTC quite a few times now. And over the years Micheal has adapted and changed the menu so you’re always surprised. Some of the mains and Great British menu winners remain so you get taste of the winning dish! Now this comes at a price. I don’t mind paying for this experience and good food at all!! The main 12 course menu starts about £150pp and then you add your drinks parings. I love this because you don’t have to have alcohol. In fact, the last time I’ve been I couldn’t drink because I’m pregnant, the juices have all been naturally created in house, were so good, I really think they should bottle it and sell them. Especially the pineapple and basil!!! Personal favourite. Allergies - informed the staff when booking and a few minor changes were made so it was all pregnancy safe. My partner is celiac and our other friend has a nut allergy. Every detail was catered for, nothing was reduced, they simply amended and created a similar taste sensation. The atmosphere and staff are incredible. You feel like you could be sat is some Quirky New York basement or Tokyo high rise. Certainly doesn’t feel like leeds city centre. Let yourself be immersed by the creative story that is a taste sensation you’ll never forget and you’ll definitely want to come back!

Like wow! Okay, this is Leeds and the competition is not exactly hot, but the set menu was beyond superb, beating The Ledbury hands down from the night before. The best menu in the UK, and I'm not known for being easily impressed. Service was good, cocktails were fab. Laugh at the OTT wine list, when the first 4 bottles I chose were either sold out or the wrong vintage. It's still less than a 100% markup though, and that gets a clap. Like I suggest, I loved it, maybe I need to buy a flat in Leeds? Thanks.

Authentic, great atmosphere, friendly and efficient staff. We ordered a few different dishes to share and were very impressed with them especially the Pad Kaprow and Beef Panang curry, tasted exactly like the stuff you get back in Thailand and the portions were perfect. There was a line when we entered but it only took over 5 minutes to be seated and our food was bought out within 10 minutes. The atmosphere truly felt like a Thai food market, would definitely recommend this place and would revisit.
