Maureens Caribbean Food in Leeds

When we first started going to Maureens, well over 10 years ago, we lived in Leeds. We have now lived on the N.E. Coast for nearly 10 years, but we still go back to Leeds every 2 to 3 months, and our first port of call is to stock up on Jerk chicken with rice, peas and gravy (a spicy sauce) and/or curried goat at Maureens. Do not be fooled by the out of town location or the unostentatious building, this place offers astonishing food (mainly as a take-away). If you have never experience Caribbean cuisine before, you really need to give it a try, and Maureens is where you will find the real deal. It is hard to describe the tastes because there is nothing else that compares! The jerk chicken is the dish to start on, but everything that they offer is incredible. The portions are “large” and all the food is cooked fresh. Also, the owner really is called Maureen and she and everyone else there are friendly and helpful. If you have never had Caribbean cuisine before, then I strongly recommend that you give it a try. In our opinion this place is the number one hidden gem when it comes to food in Leeds.

Amazing amazing amazing food ! We cannot recommend enough !! The curried goat 🔥🔥🔥🔥 we organised quite a last minute family gathering Maureen was very helpful . Everyone really enjoyed it thank you will def bed visiting again when we are next in Leeds .

First visit to Maureen’s tonight but certainly won’t be the last. Everything that I tried was delicious. I had the curried goat rice and peas, fried dumpling and plantain. My husband had the fried chicken and also thoroughly enjoyed that as well. The staff were lovely and the food is a good price. Highly recommended!!!

Always a winner eating here. Occasionally a bit less than a 5 but not often. Maureen keeps it ticking along and is very hands on. The jerk is spot on and highly recommended.

I have eaten from Maureens a few times now and have never felt any compromise on food quality. Every time the food has been excellent. It is always cooked there daily with a wide range of options. The staff are always very friendly and ready to tell you what is available for the day. It is truly authentic Caribbean food and I would recommend this place to anyone.

Saw a YouTube clip from Rate My Takeaway, on Maureen’s & decided to give it a go, having had a few holidays in the Caribbean, we love (authentically cooked) Caribbean jerk chicken - and this place did not disappoint. The Jerk chicken was so flavoursome & moist & the accompanying dipping sauce was delicious! Service behind the counter was very helpful & cheerful. Can’t wait to return to Maureen’s again!

I love the food at Maureen's- in fat one of my favourite Leeds take aways. Food is authentic, tasty and well priced. Only two warnings- get there early as they can run out and its highly addictive!

My lad said his chicken was lovely but didn’t like the rice I think that’s just a personal thing . My rice was ok the chicken looked great large but so dry had to take a drink to swallow the last bit I ate and left half. Server was polite and didn’t notice any hygiene issues, probably just one of those things

We went to Maureen’s with a big order whilst it was busy and Maureen was more than accommodating with our order. The food is amazing, proper authentic homemade Caribbean food for amazing prices, the supreme boxes for £7.50 are great value for money!! 100% recommend!

Popped in for lunch but were a bit early for most items except fried chicken. We didn't mind because this meant everything was being cooked fresh for us for midday. This included the alluring aroma of chicken cooking outside on the bbq. We had bbq and jerk chicken which were very good. But best was the rice and peas, dumplings and battered fish which I definitely recommend. The chef (Maureen?) was extremely pleasant and a good hostess. The place was packed and many were obviously regulars: of course it was when the food is fresh, tasty, very filling and great value for money. Enough food for three regular eaters came to £12.50.

There is a reason this place is legendary. Great food, great prices, nice staff. There really is nothing negative to say about it.

En primer lugar, la comida aquí era increíble, tenía arroz y guisantes, albóndigas, saltfish y ackee. Un buen plato lleno de mucho sabor, barato como papas fritas.Es un poco básico, la puerta se está cayendo a pedazos, pero no es por eso que estás aquí. Está lleno, lleno de vida y chat, y como se mencionó anteriormente, la comida es excelente. Cómprala para llevar si quieres comerla en algún lugar elegante.

La comida aquí es increíble, como la cocina casera tradicional que se siente reconfortante, no pesada ni pesada en el estómago. Siempre ha sido bastante básico en apariencia (mesas y sillas de plástico), creo que eso siempre ha agregado a su encanto. No tenía lujos, con un gran ambiente, comida increíble, y siempre estaba ocupado, un gran lugar para observar a la gente. Sin embargo recientemente he de decir que el lugar se ha ensuciado tanto. Las sillas están muy sucias, el piso está resbaladizo con capas de grasa y sucias que se han acumulado. En nuestra última visita pedimos la mesa en la que estábamos sentados para ser limpiados. ¡El hombre lo limpió limpiando los huesos de pollo que estaban sobre la mesa sobre el piso! - ¡bonito! Aunque me encanta este lugar y lo he hecho durante muchos años, no estoy seguro de que regresaría después de la experiencia del hueso de pollo / piso grasiento.

He estado en Maureen durante años pero no he visitado en algún momento debido a la reubicación sin embargo, a mi regreso me di cuenta de lo mucho que me lo perdí.Buena comida y excelente calidad.Aconsejaría a cualquiera en la zona para probarlo. Vine aquí por primera vez hoy y no pude decidir qué tener, un miembro del personal muy útil me ayudó a saber qué comer y me recomendó las chuletas de cordero, el arroz y los guisantes. La comida sabe tan bien y volvería otra vez.

Fuimos allí para algunos propiamente dicho, no caribe sopa sopa de entretener a cualquier otro sitio, me encanta la sopa de Caribe. No me decepcionó, era precioso, así que con un montón de sabores en la boca de pollo. Incluso pude poner mi solicitud de no patatas! (exigente con la comida). El personal amable y el hecho de que era una cola cuando llegué me indica lo popular que es. Sin duda vale la pena el viaje desde Harrogate, volveremos.

Gracias a las preciosas señoras de películas emancipación para organizar este llevar. Ojalá hubiéramos tenido tiempo para comer en el chef y conocer, porque la comida era genial. Tuve la cabra curry, arroz y guisantes y comida dura. Y yo lo disfrutamos. La cabra era suculento y licitación, rebozadas y banana suave y ligeramente salada, el arroz agradable y picante. Yo soy de Londres, pero estoy completamente de esperar volver a estar aquí para carnaval. Beato.

Visited here 1 lunchtime. Opted for the large Jerk chicken meal with rice and peas. Very tasty food at cheap prices £6 beats Macdonalds any day

Called for a quick cuppa and ended up with authentic Jamaican patties as well. Wonderful Caribbean menu with ample choice. Reasonably priced as well. Good is delicious. Next time it's the jerk chicken peas and rice! We will be back.

The price was reasonable stop for a meal for 2 the food was fine not spicy or hot some people love hot pepper sauce.Had to wait around 20 minutes for food to be ready all time consuming..The food was tasty i would come back again,

My friend recommended having a take away from here around lunch time...he said try curried lamb but unfortunately it wasn't ready as we were a bit early...we got jerked chicken and curried chicken and peas rice...I also got a peice of there fried chicken and I got to say my first time trying carribean food it was delicious...the jerked chicken literally melts in your mouth and the curried chicken was so flavoursome...definitely will be getting take aways from here wen I pass the area

If you wand to eat some great Caribbean food for excellent value for money, this a place for you. Run by lovely people serving good food of generous proportions, how can you go wrong? Will definitely be going back.It is really only a cafe, but who cares? You can also get a take out service.I an rating this as excellent because the quality for cost ratio is superb and the owner tries really hard to look after you.

I always call here when in need of some hearty wholesome food. The service this day was super fast and order all correct. Curried chicken, rice & Peas, fried dumpling and veg (small portion) for £6. They are far too cheap but then it is always busy. The menu is vast. It is a cafe interior but this gives it a relaxed friendly feel.

On recommendation from a friend, I have had a takeaway and dined in at maureens. The food is delicious although I have only ever tried the Jerk Chicken. The seasoning is great, the rice its served with is nutritious and the sauce accompaniment is lovely. Always Busy when I visit, sign of a great place with great food. Thumbs up..

Recommended by a ex-local who had yet to visit. A few minutes out of town and not somewhere you'd immediately seek out or stop at for food.Popped in for lunch and only one table available. Busy kitchen with great smells and an excellent menu.Went for the small jerk chicken and my colleagues went for the large jerk chicken and the goat curry - All with rice and peas.All very tasty and authentic for a great price - Will be returning shortly!

My partner is Jamaican and is obsessed with the food from Maureen's! You must be doing something right to match the quality of his mums cooking. We visit here regularly and love it.

Bad service, went in the restaurant which said it was open, and then the men behind the counter saw me and made me wait ten minutes before telling me it was closed

I am a regular customer of Maureen's.Both my parents are Jamaican and this is the only place where I can get food that taste like my mums.Great food, good size portions. They also do catering for special occasions.They catered for over 100 people at my daughters christening and still managed to provide quality tasty food.Well done Maureen's.

The food is okay but what spoiled things for me was the customer service. There have been a couple of times when I have gone into the restaurant, when they have the electronic 'open' sign on display. Then I have stood patiently behind other customers waiting to be served. One of the young men saw me, and served all of the other customers first and only then decided to tell me that the takeaway was actually closed and he could not served me, once I got up to the counter. To be honest, I was quite shocked, he'd clearly seen me come in and I felt like I was being singled out for some strange reason. He had clearly seen me standing there before as he'd turned and looked at me, and the sign said 'open' so why make me stand there before abruptly telling me it is closed?It is a shame because I have tried their food in the past, and it is okay as far as Jamaican food goes, but the service from the young men serving there has always been fairly nonchalant or abrupt, despite the fact that I'd been a regular customer before and had always been fairly cheerful and friendly up until that point.I also in the past have found the service painfully slow, even if there are few customers there and I am just ordering a couple of patties. However, as it is one of the few Jamaican takeaways in the area, I have just accepted that perhaps that is just the way they run.But then having my time wasted and being refused service, when there was no indication that the takeaway was closed, was unfortunately the last straw for me. I no longer eat out at Caribbean takeaway stores anymore, and simply cook my own. Much cheaper and the service better! If this improves, I may consider going back and recommending it to friends and family again, but at the moment, it seems silly to spend money with a business that clearly does not want it.

This small restaurant came highly recommended to us but it looked to be in a down-market area of Leeds. But we needn't have worried because the place is an unpretentious gem and the food sparkled. Warm, friendly staff served us, guiding us through the Caribbean menu and we settled for curried goat with rice and peas and it was great. The goat was good and tender and the curry not so hot that our lips swelled afterwards. Perfect.Good portions, nice prices and a very reasonable choice on the menu. I'm looking forward to returning and trying other things soon.Well done Maureen!

The food here is brilliant and the staff are very friendly. Because it's such a small place they don't always have everything on the menu, but I can overlook that because the food is so good. The jerk chicken is the best I've had. Not expensive either.

You get the best jerk chicken from Maureen's! It's so tender it just falls off the bone. Get it with the rice and peas with a dumpling and get the sweet gravy in a tub to dip your dumping in and there you go...Curried goat is good too!

We had a delicious and generous meal at the lovely Maureen's- great home cooked food and service with a smile is the order of the day here. We also bought some extra to take out! We will be returning!

Best Caribbean food cafe in leeds, been to many different Caribbean food premises but this one stands out the most. Atmosphere very homely and welcoming. Try soup of the day, always different but good and then there's the curry goat and rice not to spicy just right. Prices reasonable similar to most Caribbean cafes but food is worth coming for.

We decided to try "Maureen's" after reading good reviews on TA, I wish we hadn't.... I rang and placed the order to collect an hour later. When my Hubby went to pick it up there was no sign of it. He waited for 20 mins or so while our entire order was "Warmed Up" in the microwave! He returned home and told me it's a good job he picked it up as had I done so I'd have walked out as the place is so dirty... Anyhow, the "Food" was now sat on our table so we hoped that the reviews re the food was true at least! With trepidation we got the dishes ready and realised 2 starters were missing, the Mutton Soup & Jerk Chicken we had ordered were nowhere to be seen, Hubby had the Lamb Chops starter he said were merely "Ok". We had ordered Fish & Curried Goat for mains, both included rice & peas in the price and hey, guess what?? No rice or peas!!! As if it couldn't get any worse the main meals were only just edible, we left most of it and went to bed. We both had an unsettled night's sleeep and upset stomach's the next day. I don't understand this as there wasn't a bad review about this place, well, until now.

Boyfriend wanted some home comfort food and being from a Caribbean sea country this is what he wanted. Was a little daunted about the area but hey, you cant judge a book by its cover!So true of this place!Kind of reminds me of Channel 4's barber sitcom "Desmonds" anyone remember that?Loved that sitcom and I loved this place too!Food was super fresh and tasty!I still cant believe we both were stuffed at lunch time with a lunch meal and drink for under £10!!!! This tiny little cafe might not look like much. But the old saying don't judge a book by its cover definitely applies here. The food is amazing the staff friendly and we often visit with work.

This place is outstanding. Its clear why it's so popular; the food is amazing and you never fail to get a really warm welcome from all the staff. We get a take-out once a month from here - our favourite is the goat curry...it melts in your mouth! If you want excellent, authentic carribean food with excellent service, and very reasonably priced then come here !! You'll wonder why you never tried it before! Well done Maureen!!

Whenever I fancy some good home cooked Caribbean food I always head to Maureen's! It's more of a cafe/take away than a restaurant and I always take out. Their curried goat, rice and peas is simply the best, even better with fried dumplings on the side. As others have said the meat falls apart. Really reasonable prices and service with a smile! Have always loved this place.

I have never had Caribbean food before but if all of it is like this then I'll be having it more often! It was even better than expected and everyone enjoyed their meals! We had curried goat and it wasn't too spicy, just enough flavour and was so tender, I was expecting a chewy meat but it just fell apart. We also had jerk chicken and curried chicken and both were delicious! What a wonderful meal, we will definitely be returning!

I went to Maureen's yesterday for the first time, and was amazed! I was on my lunch break and fancied something hot, so went to Maureen's because it had been recommended to me by a few people. I went for some curried goat with rice and peas. It was absolutely delicious and very moreish, the curried goat wasn't too spicy and very flavoursome. You can also get some salad with your meal, and all food can be eaten in or to take-away.Would definitely come back again, Maureen's Caribbean Food also do other caribbean favourites like saltfish & ackee and jerk chicken. Will definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting some good home cooked Jaimacan food, served by friendly people.
