Had a table booked which was booked over the phone on 31st Aug for 2nd Sept. They took my phone number etc. Turned up on the night to a note in the window saying shut for the week. Charming, why bother even taking my contact details in the first place. It’s been hit and miss since the current landlord took over but I finally give up trying to support this local business.

Poor experience after querying the prices of drinks, my friend bought two drinks for one price then I bought the same drinks 30mins later and charged one pound more. When I politely queried I was rudely told that it’s not the case and I was wrong, I was left feeling embarrassed and made to feel I was wrong, worryingly I found out the staff member was the landlord ! How true I am not sure but talking to some locals this is quiet common where the price list differs to the price charged!

Was recommended this pub by an old work colleague visited at lunchtime and after speaking with the lady behind the bar as we thought it was closed she explained that due to the summer holidays they aren’t busy during the day especially if it’s good weather they don’t do food at lunchtime due to this we had a drink only did order a pint of larger which unfortunately they had sold out of so chose another then the lady came out and gave me a complimentary bottle of beer as they didn’t have it on draught which was a lovely gesture looked at the food menu for the evening as we were looking for somewhere to eat that evening menu looked impressive and a good choice but unfortunately they were fully booked and couldn’t squeeze us in which was a shame but we fully understood it’s a very old pub if you like this sorts of places great seating area in the bar friendly staff would recommend

My wife selected this venue based on the sample menus we were able to find online and to say it didn’t disappoint would be a massive understatement…. We have an old dog who is disabled and the amazing welcome she and I received was so lovely and indicative of how we would be treated for the duration of our evening. Being fans of prawns we ordered some to share for our starter. The description failed the dish we ended up with by some margin. Seriously, just order the prawns. We struggled to find any negatives with our visit but one was that the description of the prawn starter simply does not do it justice. We all agreed that we could have ordered a few of these with the croquettes we also had as a starter plus some chips and we would have left feeling like we had just had one of the best meals on our little trip to Cornwall. But we also had some mains and thank goodness we did…. I’m assuming you don’t know my wife but trust me when I say, if she says the pork belly (which her mother had and was willing to share through some serious maternal adoration) was one of the best examples of that dish she has ever had, that is EXTREMELY high praise indeed. And she had the lamb shank, which was also awesome. So awesome, in fact, that the small taste I was allowed left me convinced that this would probably be her death row meal. Amazing. And I didn’t even have it! My father in law and I were having to make bargains with our ageing bodies, being as how we had red meat the night previous and aren’t fans of heart disease but, fortunately, the Maltsters had an amazing mushroom risotto on offer. This was so tasty that it didn’t feel like a compromise for even a second; perfectly cooked rice, an astonishing surfeit of mushrooms of many varieties, all perfectly cooked (no mean feat, kudos, chefs!) and how have I never thought to pair a mushroom risotto with garlic dough balls before?? Genius is the only word. All the staff we interacted with were lovely and couldn’t have been more helpful with any request we had. Honestly, S-Tier kudos to the serving staff, kitchen staff and my wife for selecting this venue, we talked for a long time after about what a great night we had had. Thanks guys., long may you continue!

This is a pub we have used many many times before. Of late sadly we have seen the level of service and quality of food vary immensely. Thursday 6th June 2024 culminated in a massive waiting time and very poor food served. This is a lovely country pub, but the owner needs to understand that this level of service and quality of food will not be tolerated and customers will vote with their feet as they did on Thursday. One young lady manning the bar and serving at the tables is not good enough. It was not a secret it was Royal Cornwall show and it would be busy. Lot of disgruntled customers that we spoke too. Sort it out!!

Gorgeous little pub. We were seated in a booth round the corner. The decor is gorgeous and it feels nice and spacious but also cosy. The food was absolutely delicious, portions are very generous. It would have been a 5* but there was only one front of house staff member on and he was trying to juggle everything on his own. Massive kudos to Jacob for managing to keep on top of all the customers by himself! We would definitely recommend a meal here!

Family meal out at this lovely pub, the food and service were awesome. My steak was lovely and my daughter’s children’s pasta dish was a great size. My son can’t eat dairy so ordered a burger without cheese. The dinner came out and there had been a slight mistake in that the burger came out with cheese but the staff had already recognised this and were very apologetic. A short time later the chef came out with a new burger without cheese and was again very apologetic. The loaded waffle was massive and tasty. All in all lovely night out, great food, service and beer. Will definitely be back.

Very good value too as it was unlimited! We stayed for the quiz night which was excellent! Perfect difficulty level and a very friendly atmosphere. We left with a box of chocolates as a prize and a bottle of wine after a very unexpectedly lovely evening. This was a birthday dinner for my partner with his family. Whilst Paulina our lovely server was chatty, she seemed busy behind the bar and, I'm sure through no fault of hers, left us waiting for long periods. FYI The pub was not busy with food orders as there seemed to be only one other table eating, maybe that was a good thing or we might have had to wait even longer! The menu was not the sample one, sadly, it was basic. The special was whole bass, which my partner enjoyed with savoy cabbage and baby carrots. The beyond burger also looked good, ordered by the vegetarian in our group. Fish and chips, pasta and ham and eggs, basic and ok, we did enjoy the chips, crispy and fluffy on the inside. Honestly it was ok, average, it did not blow us away but it wasn't the worst either. I wouldn't want to go if it was very busy I suspect everything would have taken even longer... However if its a gorgeous day and you are passing through Chapel Amble on your way to the coast, chips and a beer here would be perfect.

One of the friendliest welcomes from Paulina - she could not have been more helpful. My husband had the cheeseburger and I had a cheese and ham sandwich. Both were delicious and beautifully presented. We had our dog with us and she was warmly welcomed by Paulina who brought her a bowl of water. Plenty of parking in the village and lots of seating in the pub. A lovely fire to make a damp February day better. We will definitely be back and will recommend to friends. Thank you Paulina. Keep smiling your lovely smile.

I haven’t been to the Maltsters for a couple of years and not since the new Landlord (also chef) has taken over. It’s always been a friendly pub , and still is with warm friendly staff and a cosy atmosphere. The decor has been carefully revamped and looks fresh but still retains the character of the old pub . It was my turn to book the annual family lunch for 12 for the day after new year . I asked for a traditional roast with everyone comfortably seated around one table and left the rest for the pub to arrange. The result was great! . . Olives and focaccia on the table before starters and then a choice of three roasts including short rib of beaf , roast pork with cracking and roast chicken or all three!. The best ever roast potatoes, parsnips , Yorkshires and four veg were served on the table . The quality was great and it was nice that you could have a little or as much as needed, so great for the hearty eater !. This was followed by a surprise glass of dessert wine and then a traditional pudding , all for a very reasonable price. We all had a great time and I will be booking again soon, definitely not one to be missed! .

I booked a Christmas lunch for my grandson, his fiancée and me for 13:15 on Christmas Day. The menu was outstanding and the food truly excellent. Sadly, however, there was an obvious staff shortage and the wait for our main courses unacceptable even for a very busy time. That said, the staff kept their smiles going and did their best to make us and other customers very welcome, so hats off to Jez, Lily, and Paulina. As always in this local hostelry, the vegetables were obviously freshly cooked and - unlike so many other places - had not been kept warm for hours! A very well done to Kerrie and the team. We have visited this pub over the past decade and have seen it rise through the 2010s and its fall post covid. Happy to say it's now back on top form, possibly even better than before. The scallops and hake were as good as the gastro pubs in the area. It was a quiet Saturday night. They definitely deserve better!

A truly delightful lunch for a very reasonable cost - excellent food, just that crucial little bit different, combined with an utterly comfortable ambience. This village pub is really competing with far more pretentious (and much more expensive!) so-called gastro hostelries and is well on the way to beating most of them.

We arrived exactly at the time our table was booked for and we’re promptly ushered to our table. I wanted to look and see what was on draught, I was then told “ok, you can look but we’ll take your order at the table”, I was then watched over by the waitress whilst I looked. We then sat at the table and the drinks were brought over. It’s a carvery lunch on a Sunday, we waited 40 minutes to be “allowed” to go up and get our food. The prices for the small and medium were fair but then there was a £6 hike to the large, which got you “1 more slice of meat”. When we finally got to the carvery, there was a choice of rolled pork, short rib, a beef joint and lamb, where was the Turkey/chicken/gammon? Sadly all the meat was tasteless and so fatty, the pile of fat on my plate at the end took up 1/4 of it. Fat is supposed to add flavour, not this time. We promptly asked for the bill, this was brought and we were told to pay at the bar, which then consisted of another 5 minute wait while the people in front of us got their drinks. We honestly were disappointed. We’ve been coming back for years, but the prices and poor food were not good. Numerous people around us were also complaining that the wait was unacceptable.

Staying at local accommodation looking forward to advertised pub /restaurant, was told the pub is closed, awaiting new lease / licensee, and nearest pubs a couple of miles away. Shame.

Good food, reasonably priced and with friendly service. Variety in the menu at a fair price, which we were unable to find at other venues in the area.

The food here is fine but that’s it, just average pub food with not much selection. The staff don’t seem overly interested and the pub lacks atmosphere which is a shame. The food was hot and arrived quite quickly.

Nice beer which about all you can say is a positive. Overall, if you’re not local AVOID. Claim to be dog friendly but “asked to sit outside in the sun” as people would be eating - nobody came to eat. Along come a group of local with dogs happily welcomed with the dogs inside served with a smile all I had was an nice pint and some passive smoking in the doorway with my dog.

A very nice pub/restaurant tucked away in a small village off the beaten track. The sea bass fillets and slow roasted pork belly were delicious and very filling. We could only manage the Eton Mess for dessert, which was enjoyable. There was a nice atmosphere and the waiting staff were pleasant and helpful.

This is such a lovely, cosy spot. We had a meal with family, some of whom ran late. It was no bother to the staff who were nothing but accommodating. Great drinks, good food, and a cosy atmosphere. The only let-down is that it closes quite early and is a bit over-priced.

It's a shame, the food was pretty good, the restaurant area pleasant and the location lovely, but the service was very poor. We were pleased to see that they were operating covid restrictions and offering table service only, but 15 minutes after being seated nobody had come to take our order for drinks. My wife approached the bar and asked if we could order, received no apology or offer for someone to come to the table just asked 'what do you want'? When our main courses arrived we waited 3 or 4 minutes for the side dishes and vegetables (not a long time in situations other than when you are watching your food go cold). There was no shortage of front of house staff (I counted at least 6) but at any one time 2,3 or 4 of them were around the bar chatting (including during the period when we couldn't get to order). With one notable exception of a young lady who was rushing around and being helpful, the staff gave the impression of not wanting to be there. No sign of staff actively scanning tables to give service, and we pretty much had to nab a passing server anytime we wanted anything. Also the Covid safe feel was a bit undermined by being served puddings by a young chap still wearing his Boardmasters Festival entry wristband.
