Stayed here overnight, very good . The food is fantastic really good value and quality. The accommodation is very comfortable and warm. A family run business and so much better than a chain operation. The owners have only been in situ less than a year and so much has been done. We will make a return visit for sure. Would definitely recommend a visit here! 🙂

Due to the closure of the M5 motorway and gridlock in Bridgwater, we we forced to find an alternative place for lunch from the one we had previously booked. On a recommendation we ended up at The Malt Shovel. The food is superb and so reasonably priced compared to where I live in Winchester. My son and his partner had the pork wellington which they said was great. I went for the home-made faggots from the specials board - OMG! One of the best pub meals I have every had. Beautifully seasoned faggots on a bed of creamy mash and the tastiest onion gravy. I abandoned my knife and fork and ate the whole lot with a spoon. Generous portion too, I was still full in the evening. Food comfort in a bowl. There was other options like the venison bourguignon I was tempted to try but that will have to wait until my next visit. Nice to see some interesting alternatives alongside traditional pub grub. Can't recommend the food enough. Thank you.

We had such a lovely stay here at the beginning of September. We booked our parents a stay for 2 nights and one a night stay for us with them on the Saturday night. Rooms have everything you need, including a very comfortable bed. We had the most amazing meal on the Saturday evening, everything was delicious and the service exceptional. Due to a slight hiccup, we needed an extra room on the Saturday last minute and the staff went over and above to make another room available at such short notice. 7 of us had breakfast on the Sunday morning, which was tasty and very good value. Free car park in a quiet location. I would highly recommend. My only suggestion would to be have soya milk or other diary free/gluten free options at breakfast.

Brilliant accommodation. Very comfortable mattress which was like home from home. Very clean. Food was brilliant first evening, however something went wrong with gluten free on the second evening, through cross contamination which came from a naan bread, which was placed on top of the rice. I really knew about it later that night. Apart from that, everything else was good. Brilliant food (if you don't require gluten free), and great accommodation with a nice outdoor area, if the weather obliges. Very quiet too. Dog friendly. Our dogs loved staying there too.

What a strange experience looking at the previous reviews their very misleading as they are from the previous owners as these guys customer service is very poor the main course was ok at best dessert was terrible over cooked in the microwave there didn’t seam to be anyone in charge with lots of youngsters there when we arrived the lad who was playing up the tree house in the garden was taking our payment we told him how poor the desserts where and there was no response at all would definitely not go as we tried Sunday lunch a few weeks earlier and that was also very poor never again which is a shame as the place has potential but not with these people running it

Hospitality very poor, not shown to our table, older barman extremely miserable and ignorant. Waiting staff all very young with zero clue on how to wait on tables. Main meal was delicious, puddings below average. Mentioned to 2 members of staff that puddings didn’t taste fresh and we were completely ignored. We will not be returning due to attitude of staff. Could be a great place to eat if staff had proper training, management smiled and the puddings were fresh.

Was really looking forward to what was our favourite pub reopening, we've been waiting for a long time, unfortunately it was very disappointing, the meat was tough and tasted off, maybe the new management are using cash and carry? Was expecting a lot more after it reopened, we will be finding somewhere else to go. The prices they charge you'd hope they'd use first class meat, not supermarket/cash & carry. 😢

Lovely old pub, great service on a lunch time (mind you, it was a quiet day) and delicious food. They're not shy in charging for wine, though - two large glasses of Chardonnay set us back £21.40, which I thought was a bit of a rip off. Would I go back to The Malt Shovel again? Yes, certainly - but I'll stick to the beer, next time!

Me and my partner went here on christmas eve 2022 and it was brilliant and instantly said we'd come back soon. Because of busy lives, it took until yesrerday to get back for Sunday lunch. I regularly leave honest reviews for places now and must say a lot of places just end up being a massive let down. Not here though as once again, it was brilliant. The food was great and the atmosphere along with the log fire give it a real country pub feel which is what we like. The staff are also very good. Very friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. We will definitely be returning and hopefully it won't take us as long before our next visit. Keep up the good work!!

Visited recently for a birthday celebration with friends. From the start, the service received from the bar staff was welcoming and both friendly and professional throughout. The food was pre-ordered and arrived in a timely manner with welcome gaps between courses. Certainly no complaints from the quality of food, which was from the Christmas menu. My starter of garlic and Stilton mushrooms was divine and like nothing I’ve ever experienced before, followed by topside of beef. The large accompanying Yorkshire pudding was sadly not up to the mark unfortunately. Normally I would have raised it and had I done so then I have no reason to believe this wouldn’t have been sorted, but in truth, I was already quite full by then and still had my Christmas pudding dessert to follow, which again was excellent! This was my first visit but I shall certainly be back!

Thought I would take a visit back with a friend after spending a great evening there with my wife a few weeks earlier and the drinks were great but the chips I ordered were definitely not cooked in separate oil as being vegetarian I firstly checked the menu and it stated vegan or vegetarian, they tasted strange so I mentioned it to the bar staff and firstly he actually said they weren't cooked in separate oil then asked someone else who said they are but I just let it go as didn't want to cause any trouble. Later I realised I had a few ro many drinks and decided to leave the car in the carpart and asked if that would be ok he said yes.The next day I picked the car up only to find the rear panel kicked in causing severe damage ,so I won't be going back there.

Fantastic food. The welcome was as warm as the wood burning fire. This is an excellent dog friendly pub/restaurant. The Sunday roast was cooked perfectly with the choice of beef, lamb, pork, chicken and veggie with seasonal fresh veg. I had the pork with apple sauce , a good plateful of crackling. Marvellous, and an enormous Yorkshire pudding crispy roast potatoes, parsnip and carrot. With a spoonful of very cheesy baked cauliflower. Yummy yummy. Everyone enjoyed their meal choices. Desserts included generous portions of panacota with peach slices. Chestnut and chocolate pudding, and complimentary pieces of chocolate brownies with our coffees. What’s not to like. Oh and ice cream for dogs! Would I go there again? Most certainly. The staff were very friendly and the service excellent.

The malt shovel has the old pub part with low beams , where there is a bar area and you can eat the restaurant food & a newer part which is more open, which are both decorated lovely . It is clean and tidy. We booked this for a family meal . The staff were very organised & because there was quite a few of us , they asked us to pre order. On arrival ( we were in the new part due to the size of the booking) a member of staff approached us to check the order was still correct . It was a busy night & we were a large party , they were understaffed . But this did not change the service, the staff worked hard to clear the table between courses , order drinks etc . The food was perfect , hot , delicious and the portions are not too big . We had a great night . Thank you

We visited this pub for a meal in June and were impressed by the standard of cooking so when a friend's birthday came up I suggested we go there for dinner. What a change. The food was truly awful and the service was forgetful to say the least. My friend's meal was awful. The rosti was burnt so was sent back only to be replaced by a new one, an equally burnt offering. The fish was tasteless and the green vegetables had been nuked by the microwave to slush. My meal of pork tenderloin was also seriously over cooked and dry. We were given a refund for one main meal and told there was a new chef and they were glad of our feedback. Time to find a better one I think!

Called in for lunch. This was our first visit. Super selection of foods, including specials. We ordered 2 ploughman’s lunches and crispy sweet & sour pork. All meals were delicious, and were generous portions. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend. Comments we made re the meals were fed back to the kitchen.

We came across this lovely pub by chance when looking for somewhere to eat lunch with friends. It was the convenience that made us stay but we were really glad we did after enjoying a delicious meal and being welcomed by a team of helpful and friendly staff.

We hadn't been to the Malt Shovel for some time as it used to be poor service. We thought we would give the new landlords a try and we were very pleased.

Posh burgers and things served on wooden boards, if you like rustic meets modern twist then the malt shovel is for you. Good food with good ales and very helpful staff , modest prices for most dishes and very clean

It was such a pleasure to meet the new landlord and landlady at the Malt Shovel on their opening night. The service was second to none and the food well presented & delicious despite there being some equipment issues. Excellent beer on tap too!

Working in area so booked this as it was cheap. The rooms are in a row out the back. They are warm, clean and spacious with large bathroom, tea and coffee facilities and a large comfy bed. The pub is very traditional and food is outstanding. No real ales was the only disappointment as you would expect a pub with that character to have a few!!

Good Sunday roast with four meats. Local to home and quiet meal out. Pleasant efficient service, okay wine but coffee could have been stronger. Warm restaurant on a wet Sunday.

I am a single traveller and booked my stay through Booking.com who told me I could not check in until 6pm. I therefore arrived at 6.15pm not having had any lunch and looking forward to an early dinner. Not only did I find that the pub had been open all day, but they stopped serving food at 6pm. As the carvery was still out, and just being put away I was hoping that I could be fitted in, but this appeared not to be possible. I was directed to another pub about 2+ miles away and had a pleasant meal there. I enjoy real ale and so was disappointed to find that this pub only had Doom Bar on pump. On returning to the Malt Shovel I went to get a pint of Butcombe, but this, their only ale, was off and so again I was disappointed. The final blow came when I was told that the pub closed at 8pm on a Sunday evening so I ended up taking a drink to my room; not quite the convivial evening I had imagined for myself!! The room however was very clean; the bed comfortable and extremely large (but was 2 single beds put together so not sure how a couple would cope with the obvious join in the middle!). The bathroom was well-equipped and the shower hot, easy to use and powerful. There was a tv in the room and the surroundings were very quiet (well, the pub does close at 8pm and is in the middle of nowhere!! Breakfast was perfectly adequate.

Not far from Steart Marsh reserve or Cannington Gardens, this country pub is a good place for lunch if you are visiting the area. Very friendly welcome from the staff and the 2 lovely labradors. Good food, ciders and beer. Garden for when the weather is fine.

Went with my husband and daughter, on more than one occasion to this little café A true Gem, staff are always very helpful and cheerful, The cakes are amazing, I have tried to resist but find them too tempting, and unlike some cakes that look lovely but taste is disappointing, these are gorgeous in looks and taste, last time myself and daughter tried the courgette and lime, while my husband had coffee and walnut, both were very tasty, along with an unusual but delicious Mumbai chai, highly recommended. All in all a very nice eating experience with the backdrop of surrounding woodland, and stream that runs past.

We don’t live far from BOS so decided to drive down for a couple of hours. It was a very cold day so decided just to have some lunch then head home :-))) We noticed this little cafe and decided to pop in, there was a table right next to the window/door so we went to the back of the restaurant for some warmth, sadly the staff kept leaving the door at the back open even when my husband kept going and closing it. But apart from that hiccup the food was very nice, and I would return but when the weathers warmer :-))))

Started well, went down hill not because of food but treatment by very aggressive, intimidating landlord ! We had booked, on entering pub went to bar to buy drinksWe were greeted by a very nice lady behind bar,she asked if we would mind eating in the adjacent room as they were busy. She said she would come and get our order for food and drinks. We walked through corridor full of junk and toilet rolls into other room. This room used to be a nice dining room but now houses tv inside fireplace, numerous notices on walls and a lift that looks like a shower in corner.I imagine this room was not normally used.We did not mind sitting in there, looking forward to food.Lady came and took our orders and brought drinks .We were quite happy and were bemused when landlord entered and seemed quite unhappy that he had to serve us. He demanded to know if we were really hungry and wanted starters ,saying aggressively, most people don't as they would not eat mains. We assured him that yes we did want them.He then said nastily that if that was the case it would take an hour and half for food.We said politely that we did not mind waiting. He then said condiments were in the bar. At this point we were sort of amused by him being so rude ,likening him to Basil Faulty. Absolutely bizarre ! Starters actually came in 30mins ,everything fine.He delivered food, ribeye steaks 20 mins later. All cooked to perfection ,one of our party asked where in the bar the condiments were He replied aggressively again,"they are in the bar where I told you 20 minutes ago !! .OBVIOUSLY it does not register with SOME people !!! " The lady came and asked us if everything was OK and asked if we wanted drinks. We said yes and even complimented her on how nice steaks were. We asked him shall we pay in bar and he said aggressively again "Yes and most NORMAL people order drinks at the bar "He then left the pub. This to me was the last straw ! Up till then we just laughed it off .We are NORMAL people who actually live just down the road ! We were asked to NOT order at the bar but what is his problem besides being a rude, nasty bully.None of this was an attempt at humour. I have NEVER encountered behavior like it,let alone by someone who is suppose to be serving you and taking nearly £90 of your money. I have been told since by locals that he is like this ! I feel sorry for the lovely lady working there. Needless to say we will not be back
