I stayed at the campsite down the road so obviously had to try this pub out. This pub is fantastic, we had a good drink on the Friday night which also had a happy hour which was a bonus. Booked in for Sunday lunch which was absolutely fantastic, even had a gluten free option which I don't always find on a pub menu and my friend is wheat intolerant. The staff were friendly, funny and extremely polite, beautiful pub and amazing food. Highly recommended.

This was our 1st visit since it’s been taken over, we ordered mains, two Sunday Roasts, the beef was cooked to perfection, plenty of mixed veg, one had the fish and chips very tasty, the other had Roast Chicken Supreme, we had to wait a while, it wasn’t busy, had to ask when would our meal be served? As a gesture of good will the manager took the drinks off the bill, we will be returning as the food was very tasty, nice to see a different menu too

We were staying for the week at a cottage in the village of Wicken and so on principle we were always going to have a dinner on one evening at the local pub(support your local). This particular early evening was a Wednesday and it was Fish evening on so we all ordered fish and chips and enjoyed this tasty delight, washed down with a local ale. The pub is closed on Monday and Tuesday, we had hoped to enjoy the a la carte menu but overall happy with our visit. Outdoor seating available at this delightful pub at the heart of a beautiful village.

We were here for a family reunion on Fathers Day. I was going to give 3 stars but having had no response to 2 feedback emails that I sent I have downgraded it. This is the honest feedback that I sent:- "I’d like to thank you for your help in putting our family meet together. We were pleased with the comfort and ambience of the area where we were sat. We also felt the staff were pleasant and courteous. The meals and the drinks received a mixed feedback. We felt that the vegetables and sauces were very good although a group of 4 were given a small dish of green vegetables to share. Some time later a request for more green vegetables was dealt with but the timing was not good. The fish and chips were commonly well received. I’m afraid that the other aspects of food and drink and most importantly ORGANISATION were poor. When we arrived a waiter came over to take orders of the people that had not placed an advanced order. 2 people at one end of the table asked about the ordered drinks and had to say what they ordered and their order was delivered. I was a little concerned that 2 coffees ordered for the sweets of Peter and Jenny were bought with those 2 drinks but they seemed OK with taking them then and despite all the complaints in this email I don’t want to find fault. At my end of the table the waiter told me that he would come to me with my order but he must have forgotten. Starters were brought for those few that ordered them and a waitress eventually came through to enquire if everyone was OK. I said me and my wife were still waiting for our drinks order. After another 10 minutes someone cam back with the 2 decaf flat whites that we ordered for the end of the meal. Unfortunately the waiter, who was clearly distressed to be told to take them back and bring the correct drinks order, wished to engage with me in a disagreement about where the fault for this lay in front of all my family. This did upset me. Eventually my ale and my wife’s wine was delivered to us – it had taken over 90 minutes to arrive and both the ale was tainted and the red wine not pleasant. In addition the 2 pre-ordered drinks were brought for a second time! The poor organisation also meant the meals did not arrive in good time. After nearly 2 hours most people had not had a bite to eat. The meat was very poor. The beef was inedible (very tough) and the poor standards of both meats was fed back to a waitress. By the time that sweets arrived staff was particularly flustered. The sweets came so late that 3 of the people that had ordered ice creams had to leave to catch their train. Again our drinks were forgotten so I asked for the 2 decaf flat whites. These were eventually brought but they were luke warm. My wife felt embarrassed for the staff so she drunk hers anyway as she did not want another accusatory conversation in front of our group. I had to ask for mine to be replaced as I felt that it was unpleasant." That concludes my feedback although I should say that there were other deficiencies. You have been warned!

This used to be a pub with great food and generous portions. The menu has shrunk. Only four starters available. The halloumi and chips had two large pieces of battered halloumi and a large portion of chips. Today I had one piece of halloumi and 18 chips…! For the same price. We had a time piece of fish with again a tiny portion of chips. The ‘wood fired pizza’ was a disgrace. Came out under cooked and cold. We sent it back. When it returned it was floppy like it had been in the microwave. We always go to this pub for a special occasion. This was a 30th birthday. We will not return for any future events. Poor poor poor. Even the cherry tree in Soham does better food than this.

A very characterful pub/restaurant that has been brought up to dat with modern furnishings and fittings. Off the tourist track (A1123) back from the main road with a lot of green for outdoor seating and eating. Good size car park away from the road. Good seperate bar and restaurant areas. Friendly and polite staff. Variety of menus which vary from day to day with lighter main meals mid-week than at weekends. Locally sourced ingredients sourced for most dishes, good range of Beers, wines and spirits. Food was well cooked, presented and served. Reasonable prices.

Moored our boat at the end of Wicken Lode and then walked through the nature reserve and village to find this pub (approx 1 mile walk). It only did Fish and Chips or Halloumi and chips as it was a Wednesday. They did a smaller portion for our boy and all plates came with mushy peas and tartar sauce. Good sized portion and delicious. The chips were fabulous. Service was friendly and food came quickly. Also dog friendly in the bar which is always a win. Would visit again to try their restaurant menu.

Unfortunately didn’t live up to expectations. It was very cold inside, my parents sat in coats. There was a long wait to be given a menu the waitress just said sorry there is a delay, we don’t have barely any, finally got one paper menu to share with whole table. Then had to wait again for the starter menu, ordered calamari, and you get three rings (similar size to onion rings)expensive for what you get. Roasts were nice but vegetables were small portions, two small trays between four. They asked us if we wanted dessert menus, which we did. We was given three menus which there was different options on, very strange. The waitress taking food orders was very pleasant. Think some back ground music would be nice touch. Unfortunately we wouldn’t rush back, not up to the normal Holland name.

On a sunny day it's a lovely place to sit outside. The thing that really disappointed is that with all the publicity there is about single use plastic, if you sit out side that's how your drinks come! Why, for no other reason than it's easier, one drink and a few hundred years in landfill, including a ridiculous plastic cocktail stirrer for a cranberry and soda. Come on The Maids Head, you can do better than this, you didn't used to use plastic, why start now, when it is so clearly the wrong thing to do?

We had a wait for our main course after our starters but as food is cooked to order, this was to be expected and the beef was so tender when it arrived, it melted in your mouth. The chocolate torte was delicious.

Perfect menu, lots of choice. Reasonably priced. We are everything - a good sign. The room was too cold and it took ages for the radiator to heat up. Other than that - very good indeed.

Menu looked inviting, but that’s where it ended, we both ordered Homemade Pie and mash, my friends pastry was burnt, mine was so hard I just left it, the meat looked like it had been cut off a cooked joint of beef and cubed and was dried up in places, the mash had no seasoning and wasn’t creamed , and of course “peas and carrots” and chopped up frozen runners , the gravy was like water, when the “Waitress “ asked if everything was ok, we replied No , her response Oh Dear ! And walked away , certainly would return , and very disappointed as this was for my Birthday !!

The pub is in the village of Wicken (which Tripadvisor didn't recognise!) We went for a meal after a visit to Wicken Fen, the first National Trust nature reserve. We were very pleased with the service, the meal and especially that there was a real choice of gluten-free meals and a gluten-free beer.

We stopped here for Sunday lunch after a walk by Wicken Fen, and it was awful. From the outside it looked good, and the real log fire was appealing. But it went downhill from there. The table was a bit sticky and obviously not cleaned properly, but we gave them the benefit of the doubt. Having had the meal I wish we had left then!I have the beef Sunday roast. The vegetables were overcooked and soggy - like something from the 70's (I think that might be when they started cooking them!). The gravy was watery and this meant that the beef was also wet through. My wife's fish and chips were no better - undercooked chips and a barely cooked fish. The pub was fairly busy, but based on our visit I'm not sure why. The service was fairly quick, but I wish they had been full and we'd gone elsewhere.

We booked expecting that the Maids Head might be busy (on a Friday evening) but when we arrived they were actually pretty quiet, maybe because the weather was bad. The menu choice was good, plenty of variety and enough to suit all 4 of us. Starters arrived about 15 minutes after ordering and the main courses I guess 15 minutes after we finished the starters. The food was really good, everyone said they enjoyed it. Both the starters and the mains were larger portion sizes than we expected. But we tried really hard and fisnished them. I hope to visist again next time we are near to Wicken.

The menu proudly declares that each dish is prepared from scratch, but fails to alert potential diners that may entail a mighty wait. Drinks and menus and waitresses arrived in quick succession but the hiatus between ordering and eating had me thinking i might need to send out a search party.i also seriously doubt my salad was assembled from scratch unless opening a bag of Florette counts.

Nice meal shame about temperature , far too cool. Food was good arrived on hot plates but unfortunately due to temperature of dining room cooled down almost immediately. Thanks for the Birthday ice cream and candle. Good friendly staff and prompt service

This place has been going downhill steadily from its zenith 25 years ago, but since the new publicans took over it has deteriorated noticeably. Three of us had dinner there on a Friday night. Over the course of three hours, we were the only guests. Yet it took forty minutes for them to deliver two mediocre portions of fish and chips with raw peas and a portion of vegetable kebabs, which consisted of raw, badly cut courgette, some impossibly strong onion, squishy tomato and raw pepper. The cheese and icecream were better, but clearly bought in. The whole was rather over-priced. The aim seems to be to turn this into a drinkers' pub for locals featuring loud, inferior bands. Such a shame for a place in such a wonderful location which, with sensitive management and good cuisine, could go back to its former days when you had to book a table six weeks ahead, even on a Monday.

We went to the Maids head for a sunday lunch today. The service initially was very good and the starters arrived quickly. But then we waited for over an hour for the main course to arrive. The roast was ok. Meat was over done and the potatoes were very dry like they had been kept warm way to long.I had a giant yorkie which was hard and a bit scored on the bottom. Portions where very large and what they had in quantity they lacked in quality.Over all disappointing.

We happened upon the delightful Maid's Head whilst visiting the nearby National Trust Wicken Fen. The pub is very old worldly and is a rebuilt 13th century inn, the last remaining pub of 3 originally in Wicken. The service was excellent, as was the food choice. We just wanted a lunchtime snack and enjoyed super sandwiches and chips accompanied by crisps and a generous side salad. There were plenty of people enjoying larger meals. We would definitely revisit if in the area again. A big thumbs up!

The pub itself needs updating and a general spruce up. Very tired looking interior. However the staff were very friendly and the food was good value, home made and a large portion.

The service here was poor, so was the food. The waitress took drinks order but forgot to bring them. The plates of food arrived but we had no cutlery. The food was very basic and tasteless. Will not be returning. Very dissatisfied .its a pity because it's a pretty little pub on the green and quite traditional inside with beams etc. I wish we had had a better experience.

The pub looked great and we booked a table for dinner. We arrived early (7.00 pm) and a group of couples in the bar had clearly already had quite a lot to drink and were so noisy the waitress had to close the door into the eating area. My prawn cocktail starter was actually shrimp - still wet from defrosting which made the sauce very watery as well. My son's rib starter was swimming in oil and the amount of fat on the ribs was over 50% of the ribs, but as it was all buried under the sauce you only discovered that when you bit into it. My scampi wasn't very flavourful and my sons steak pie and mash was clearly not home made and simply put from the freezer direct to the microwave. I know the owners say that everything is prepared fresh but it definitely isn't. With such a small menu it should all be cooked fresh and there is no justification for microwaving frozen food. We will not be going back unfortunately.

Beautiful premises but couldn't recommend for Sunday lunch. Roast potatoes weren't homemade and the yorkshire pudding was very doughy. Only two small slices of chicken although the lamb and beef portions were more generous. However, desserts were excellent.

Really disappointing experience. We came for the Sunday lunch and the food was undercooked- the chef seemed to be coming out and telling people that it was the quickest service of his life- seems strange to me to admit that you rushed everyone’s food and then make them pay the same prices. The gravy was watery, the carrots and parsnips were raw and the potatoes were oily. I understand having bad days but it is unacceptable to charge the same prices when you are aware the quality is bad. There are far better places In Cambridgeshire to go for a roast- especially considering this one cost £20 for a single plate of food!!
