We've just visited this pub as we ate trying to support all our local pubs and we were not disappointed. We had an excellent 3 course Sunday lunch with exceptional friendly service. The food was served v quickly after ordering on our arrival and it was all freshly prepared home made food - crab ravioli and haggis and neeps as starter and both had roast pork which came with scrummy crackling lovely perfectly cooked fresh veg all delicious esp the cabbage and cauliflower cheese and roasties and boiled potatoes. Desserts were to die for melt in the mouth chocolate goey brownie and sticky toffee pudding- great quality and service-thank you to all the friendly chatty staff who made us feel very welcome in this lovely homely local pub - 10/10

Went here for Sunday lunch while staying in the village last week - had phoned in advance and they were able to accommodate a party of 6 adults, a baby in a pram and a dog. Wow, what a fantastic meal ! I can honestly say that this was the best Sunday lunch I have ever had in a pub. Everyone in our party agreed that it was superb. Plates were loaded with as much meat (beef, chicken, pork, gammon) as you could manage. The amount of extra veg put on the table was outstanding. The food was absolutely delicious and everyone was full to the brim. Excellent service from all staff and the lady in charge was so helpful and friendly and made us all feel so welcome. Was a struggle to walk back down to our cottage! Overall a top class experience and if you are in this area, do yourself a favour and visit the Lord Nelson for your Sunday lunch - you won't regret it !!!

Came in shortly after the opening time, having traveled from a nearby village after discovering that the local pub didn't serve food (despite the internet saying it did). The staff were friendly and inviting, but upon our attempt to place an order we were informed that they only provided take a away service and would only allow for seating on Sundays. The menu was bare and we were quoted a 30 minutes wait for a single salmon dish... Bearing in mind that as far as we could tell, we were the first customers that evening, with no one else in the dining area. Suffice to say, we abandoned our plans for a pub grub meal out that evening, and went home disappointed and hungry.

Went up to Appleton Wiske for a holiday and this was our local. The bar staff / landlord / family / local residents were all lovely and very welcoming each time we went in. The food is delicious! The prices were not to argue about (we even said they were too low!) Was gutted this was just a holiday spot rather than a local to us. I booked Sunday Lunch at the Lord Nelson on the morning of our visit and as we had a small dog with us we ate in the bar. Our reception was friendly and efficient and our main course lunch was served promptly by a pleasant girl. My wife had chicken and I had beef. Both meats were of excellent quality and were accompanied by a good selection of vegetables and a boat of gravy. Two other couples were dining at the same time as ourselves and I have every reason to believe that the quality was consistent throughout. The licensee, who is also the chef came to have a word with us and we told him of our satisfaction. This was a very good quality Sunday Lunch and I have every reason to believe that we will repeat the experience.

(booking early advised!)From the asparagus soup with scollops (which sounds an unlikely combination but it worked perfectly), the delightful crab cannelloni, the meltingly tender lamb rump with its accompanying slow braised lamb shoulder potato cake and finishing with the amazing rhubarb and ginger mouse, the whole meal was a joy and one I'd be more than happy to repeat !Chef has an instinctive feel for flavour combinations and the ability to bring those combinations to the table with style and finesse.Thank you for a splendid evening!

My partner and I stumbled upon this pub around a year ago after looking for somewhere not too far away from Northallerton to eat. As soon as we were welcomed into the Lord Nelson the staff seemed very friendly and helpful, at the time of dining they had a prawn linguine on the menu which I ordered. I can honestly say, this is one of my favourite dishes and this is the best one I have tasted, (including overpriced Italians) all the ingredients are fresh ingredients and are still able to cater for my taste a year down the line, even though the dish isn't even on the menu anymore. While out on a day out one sunday, my partner and I decided that we were both starving, and started to drive around the country side looking for a nice place to go and have our sunday dinner. After driving around for about an hour, we decided to too try another establishment in Appleton Whisk as we had been told about it, but on arrival there it was heaving, and we were just to hungry to sit and wait for a table. We set off about 400 yds into the village and come across the Lord Nelson. On entering we were greeted by lovely staff. We ordered a dinner each and it turned out to be the best sunday dinner we have ever tasted in our lives. Everything is home made, and the desserts are to die for. The Lord Nelson Inn at Appleton Wiske, near Northallerton, is a great value find. Meals served only Friday & Saturday evenings, and Sunday lunchtime. Once a month there is a special themed dinner on a Saturday - the most recent was 'A Taste of England' - four courses at £25 and absolutely delicious. (Booking essential) The standard menu offers favourites often with a twist, and are always beautifully prepared and cooked, and well presented. It's a village pub, not a fine dining restaurant, but you'd go a long way to find better.
