Had coffee and cake. Lovely, so bought a selection home for the family. Really good. Different options than you might find elsewhere. Gluten free and vegan options as well. Orange and almond, apple and cinnamon, Lemon and turmeric (lovely - who knew that was a good combination). We live in Colchester so not too far away. Will definitely be back.

I LOVE this place.. everything about it is just wonderful. The couple who run it are friendly, its homely, its quirky, its vintage & retro. When its quiet (a rarity!) we go through the vinyl & play records. Conversation flows throughout the place as its so open. The micro menu is divine but don’t expect main stream anything.. its like a kitchen from home.. relaxed & sometimes when customers finish a cake, that one may no longer be on the menu. Its what happens when a chef is good at what they do & everything is homemade. Chose something else.. be flexible. If its busy, be patient. This is a place I take as many of my friends to as I can because it is 5* always ❤️ and its dog friendly

We chanced upon The Loft during a Sunday afternoon at Tollesbury, in need of refreshment after a wonderful lengthy walk along the sea wall. We ordered a mug of tea each and shared a slice of fruit cake. Prompt service by the efficient and personable staff was complemented by the rustic, comfortable and ornate interior. The tea really hit the spot, freshly brewed and of the strength that we like. The fruit cake was quite delicious, moist and with the even distribution of fruit one would hope for; the lovely proprietress confirmed that it was home made, as are many of the other delicacies on offer in the interesting and somewhat ambitious menu. The Loft is a real gem, a small scale outfit in which the owners genuinely take pride, and rightly so in view of the lovely experience we enjoyed.

Lisa and Dave are so inviting that you could easily bask in their cosy, warm and friendly surroundings all day long. They truly create a very special place, somewhere that stays in your mind and sticks to your heart. Their food is fantastic. I find a small savoury selection is a true sign of a confident master chef. The patties are the very best I’ve tasted, the cheesey scone was delicious and the soup was packed with flavour! The cake selection is phenomenal - even if you are full, take a mini selection of treats or a slice of cake home otherwise you will regret it! I fondly dream of a pattie, a good ol’mug of tea, whilst soaking up the warmth of love and soft reggae music that exudes from The Loft.

I had messaged them before our visit to ask if any of their cakes are GF and vegan as they have a good few choices of both. It was wonderful to arrive to a beautifully made and tasty bakewell cake which had been made especially gf and vegan. Wow! Not a lot of choice of vegan dishes but we knew that and were happy. We also have a dog who was welcomed too (outside). Really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend and go back - only wish it was closer to home! Thanks again for the ‘best ever’ cake!

Being a family of vegans and vegetarians, we often struggle to find something for us all to eat especially when there are no major food outlets around. No such problem at The Loft, there's something for everyone. Today there was a choice of 2 different vegan cakes (we opted for the lemon and poppyseed) and 2 milk alternatives for our drinks. My daughter had a Chai Latte made with coconut milk (recommended by a member of staff) which she said was delicious and would definitely have again. After a long walk with the dog in the gorgeous sunshine, we were back for lunch. Roasted vegtable paninis this time, one with cheese and pesto, one with hummus and falafel. We have always found the staff at The Loft to be very friendly and helpful and willing to cater for our culinary needs. In the past I have given a well deserved 5star rating to the Loft. However it now seems to have gone badly downhill. When I visited in August it was staffed by a gentleman with rather distinctive facial hair and a school holiday girl. The girl took my order and quickly brought tea which was good. The bacon sandwich however took ages to come because they seemed more interested in having a good chat between themselves. When it did arrive the bacon had been incinerated, it was very crunchy to say the least. I did not send it back as I did not have the time to waste waiting for a re cook.

At the till I was charged £6.75 for the sandwich which I thought was poor value but said nothing as I was in a rush. I’ve now looked at the menu on line and see that the listed sandwiches are £6.25, have more than one filling, and are served with garnish mayo and crisps. Disappointed.

Really enjoyed our lunch at the Loft, which we stumbled upon while visiting the area for the first time - we will be back!My son had a kids platter - very generous sandwich, crudités, crisps and a choice of cake for after. I had a simple but delicious sandwich and iced coffee. The bread made it - fresh, thick, soft doorstop bread. Wonderful. The cute retro decor was also lovely - comfy cushions on the chairs and lovely things to look at/art on display. Perfect little tearoom/cafe really.Oh and the staff were all lovely and friendly and efficient. Can't fault this place really!

Just stopped at the Loft for lunch after a long walk with my pooch Scooby on a trip to Tollesbury. Super service & good reasonably priced food. I had the tuna salad and Scooby had a lot of fuss from passers by as we sat in the sun people & pooch watching! Would def return to Tollesbury as super dog friendly for walkies and The Loft - Tea by the Sea is a really great funky little place to stop for lunch or nice cuppa with a low fat (obviously) cake!! We walked to the Tollesbury Marina, past the saltwater pool and the sail sheds, and stopped for a coffee and dessert. The staff is friendly, the quality of the food is excellent. The atmosphere is perfect as a gathering place. While we were there Moms and kids from the pool came in for treats. We walked on to the wetlands after enjoying our break. Oh plus we purchased local artists' postcards.

Found this cafe through fellow cyclists and it did not disappoint. Staff/Owners were so friendly as were the locals and the breakfast bap is superb (they even cook the egg to a runny perfection). If you are in the area you must visit even if its to see the owners moustache :-)

I've now visited twice and had a great experience both times. The first was after cycling over 25 miles from Rayleigh (Southend) with a friend. We ordered the smoked mackerel pate which looked scrumptious when it arrived and it was really filling. Lisa was a welcoming hostess, the cafe has a vintage feel and the Motown classics playing on the radio brought back childhood memories. I recommended The Loft to a couple of mature lady cyclists, who made the same journey. They were delighted by the atmosphere and happy with the falafel, hummus and roasted vegetables. Last week I telephoned and enquired about bringing a group along. Lisa said that we could pre-order food and offered to join tables together. On Sunday, 21 of us arrived on bikes, in two groups. The service was excellent, considering our large number. Names were taken for beverages and we didn't have to wait too long for our baps. I had a fried egg and cheese baps while most others had meat fillings. The bap was a proper sized one and a friend said the bacon was delicious but Daddies brown sauce isn't as good as HP! David, who has a mighty set of whiskers managed to change records on the gramophone and serve up great food. All 21 of us were happy and I'll definitely be going back. Do bring a lock to secure your bike to the fence unless you choose to sit outside.

Second time I have popped in with the family while visiting Tollesbury for a walk, the panini and toasted sandwich selection is great, I personally would recommend the local sausage meat cheddar and chutney it was marvellous. The selection of homemade cakes varied on each occasion and Myself and the family have never been disappointed.

Have been meaning to visit The Loft tea room for ages, since our memorable visits for Charlie Stocker's pop-up restaurant. We were not disappointed! Beautiful as ever, an eclectic mix of art work on the walls, mismatched furniture and china, a delightful atmosphere, like walking into a friend's home.Wonderful fruitcake, apparently - I didn't get to taste any - and my Victoria sandwich cake was the best, light as a feather, apricot jam and icing, and even garnished with a strawberry and a smidge of clotted cream - what's not to like? The tea was perfect, well flavoured and piping hot. We will definitely be back!

The staff were so helpful in making arrangements for 20 people for my birthday celebration. Food was excellent, staff were thoughtful and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Fab meal, enjoyed by everyone. Favourite lunch venue.

I absolutely fell in love with the place as soon as I walked through the door. Everything mismatched and just a little bit kitsch-cool. The staff are really friendly - I booked ahead and email responses were almost instant. The tea is loose leaf and served in vintage tea cups and the coffee is great too. My only slight disappointment was that they don't serve their breakfast menu on a Saturday (only a Sunday), so I had to have a brie and bacon panini just after 11am instead - but I was soon distracted again by the beautiful interior and undeniable charm, and now have a reason to go back on a Sunday...

Lovely place for lunch especially as you can book a table. Very pleasant friendly staff. Would recommend the panini's and afterwards perhaps follow the footpath next to it and you can walk along the waters edge to the car park up the road which seemed the best place to leave your car.

I was not expecting what I had in there, it had so much variety and decaf tea as well a plus with me, very quaint old China cups and saucers will definitely go back there again, have to time it right as the tide comes close to the steps but no problems recommend the bake well cake yummy.

Having previously been once before with a 2 month old baby and experienced the wonderful service and food in somewhat of a daze of new parenthood, we decided to return with our (now 2yrs 2months old) son on Sunday before a walk.I have to say our memories served us rather well in that our heady expectations were fully met with delicious food (the gluten/dairy free fruit cake was a particular highlight) and friendly service. For such a quaint tiny spot they do wonderfully well to make you feel relaxed and take as long as you like, they even have room for a nifty folding baby changing table in the loo - marvellous.Having previously nearly lost our car to the tide last time here, we were careful to park in an appropriate spot this time so if you go - READ THE SIGNS!Couldn't recommend this spot highly enough.

First visit here and we weren't disappointed! Called in advance to book afternoon tea and requested one gluten free. Was told no problem at all! Table was reserved for us when we arrived which was just as well as a very popular establishment! Lovely vintage atmosphere too. The afternoon tea when it arrived was amazing and the gluten free one just as impressive! All the food was wonderful. Had to box up what we couldn't eat!. Will definitely be back to try other things on the extensive menu!

We had 12 members of our family there for my mums 80th birthday. They don’t normally cater for groups of more than 8 but they made an exception for mum as she has eaten there for years. Staff were superb as always, plus the food was excellent. They catered for all ages and allowed us to bring our own cake. The food and service are so much better than you should ever expect from a pub. Eat here and you won’t be disappointed.

Just had a superb Sunday lunch here. From the welcome at the front desk to the service during the meal, it was welcoming and top class - just the right amount of attention without being ‘in your face’. And the food was great. Started with a taster of fresh oysters - as local as you can get (landed less than a mile away) which were outstanding. A starter of scallops and pork belly was sublime and roast pork right up to the standard that the earlier dishes had set. Overall an excellent experience. Thoroughly recommended.
