This is the last of this family's chain of restaurants we've tried ... and it didn't disappoint! The menu is very similar to its sibling's menus, which we expected. Containing a great selection of different foods. I went for the halibut and chocolate brownie. The fish was melt-in-your-mouth and the brownie sooo chocolaty, I won't need any more sweet stuff for a month. Service is exceptional from the friendly crew. Prices are on the high side as you'd expect for a meal (and service) of this quality.

I visited The Lodge partly because of having eaten and stayed at other Colchester Inns I knew of their very high standards but also because they served my favourite fish, Halibut. I was not disappointed. The food was out of this world, simple, flavoursome and totally well worth making the special effort to go to The Lodge. Service and atmosphere wonderful. I will definately come again.

Visited for a birthday lunch and was greeted by Gemma. The whole experience from start to finish was amazing. We chose to take our first drinks outside to view the menus in the sunshine. We were made to feel so welcome and at ease. Nothing was too much trouble…more like the answer is yes now what’s the question! Deciding to remain outside for our starter we chose the oysters and asked if they could be cooked in tempura batter which arrived superbly presented with a delicious mayonnaise. With a very comfortable break our main courses were brought out to us…Plaice on the bone stuffed with prawns and mushrooms in a sauce with new potatoes and samphire…skate wings in caper butter with chips and vegetables. We opted to have desserts inside and these didn’t disappoint either…classic crepes suzette with vanilla ice cream! A wonderful 3 hours with superb friendly service throughout! What an absolute treat! We will definitely be returning very soon! Thanks to the whole team!

I'm so glad I went ahead with our booking, we really had a fantastic time ( all 6 adults plus Willow the dog). The Service, Food and ambience was truly fabulous. The portion sizes were HUGE!! Those who ordered starters could hardly finish their dinner, I really wanted to try a dessert but their just wasn't any room. The menu had plenty of variety which appealed to our group. The ambience was buzzing ( wednesday eve), the staff all very helpful. Next time we are back in the area its a must visit .THANK YOU to the Salhouse Team !!

By chance we made the decision to eat there too as the menu looked so good. 10/10 for absolutely everything… from the warm welcome to the exceptional food and hospitality. We both had the Halibut and my, it was sublime. What a fantasticjob you're all doing. More than highly recommended!!

I've spent many evenings in The Lodge over the years as my brother's band played there on a regular basis. I was interested to see what it was like now so went for a family meal. Rather slow service but the food was excellent apart from the fact that the portions were huge! I'm sure some people are fine with the portion size but I find it very off-putting to be faced with so much food. The waste must be horrendous, which surely is not financially viable. It does seem to be Colchester Inns 'thing' to fatten people up!

This was our first visit since the new owners took over and refurbished the place. It has been tastefully and well renovated. The lunch was utterly outstanding. Some of the best food we've had in a long time. The food was excellent, very well cooked, excellent quality and VERY generous portions. The menu is extensive, freshly cooked and served piping hot. The prices are very reasonable too. Finally, the staff were all excellent, friendly and clearly well trained. A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED VENUE.

As usual the food was fantastic, well cooked and presented, good value for money and throughly enjoyed. But was let down by the service which was appalling, complete chaos, George was very pleasant and attentive, but everything was rush if he just calmed down for minute and went a a slower pass it would be more efficient and unfortunately this was reflected by the majority of waiting staff didn’t seem to have a clue what was going on. We will return hoping that these might just be teething problems

Very mediocre , huge portions and quite bland food. The service was slow in places, but food came out quickly. Cocktails were lovely, wines “ok”. Starters were lovely but very big; crispy satay chicken was a mix of flavours and not overly crispy. My octopus was DELICIOUS. I had the duck and the skin was quite rubbery, not crispy, and duck itself quite tough. The dish was quite under seasoned. The barley mix was far too big, would be better if less. My girlfriend had the skate and it was HUGE. Quite overcooked and mushy. Chips were delicious. Salad portion was far too big. I won’t be hurrying back. - please reduce portion sizes - think about seasoning - starters need to be reduced in size

Ladies who like to lunch! I am always on the look out for new places to try and our visit on Monday 11th Sep certainly did not disappoint. The recent renovation is very chic and luxurious, both the interior and exterior. I loved the colour scheme and I can see it being enjoyed throughout all the seasons. Very comfortable relaxing bar area, restaurant and outside terrace. The menu offered great choice from nibbles, starters and mains, making it a difficult decision to make a final choice. My friend, a vegetarian, was equally pleased with several inviting menu items which were detailed separately for easy menu navigation. The service was great, although one small thing, we personally prefer having 1 server rather than different people seating you, taking your order, food delivery and service checking. The waitress who took our order was very helpful in checking with the chef if they could alter an element of the dish I had chosen. She knew the dish well including it came with a sauce which wasn’t mentioned on the menu. We will definitely be back!

We’ve visited the Lodge on a number of occasions and have been blow away by the level of service, beautiful surroundings and quality of food. This particular visit was no exception. We had a long leisurely dinner with friends on a beautiful summers evening. We started off having pre-dinner drinks outside on their sunny terrace and then moved inside for dinner. My partner Karen had the skate wing which she really enjoyed and I had their signature dish viz. dover sole. I can honestly say that my dover sole was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. That might sound like an exaggeration but all I can say in response to that is, try it for yourself, you will not be disappointed! A huge well done to George and the team for delivery such an amazing culinary experience.

This was our second visit for Sunday Lunch and somehow it did not overly impress. Service was fast and friendly but the free WiFi only appears to be in the bar area and not in the restaurant, going for the carvery the beef sadly looked very unappetising being overcooked and with no sign of fat veining to add flavour, so I opted for turkey and gammon both of which were moist and tasty. The range of vegetables was someone limited and somewhat annoying that there were no peas yet my wife who ordered grilled fish had peas on her plate. When it came to desserts they were quite tasty but all appeared to be bought in and had been on display for some time as any cream on them looked tired and had the colour of any fruit bled into it.

We booked for a Sunday lunch and arrived to a warm welcome and were shown to our table. Whilst their website does not state it, on Sundays they have a carvery and the choice was gammon, pork, turkey or beef (all looked very good although the beef was medium and did not have marbling but still tasted good) served with yorky, sausage and stuffing. There was a reasonable range of vegetables, all cooked to perfection (parsnips were a bit tasteless) with gravy and white sauce. Overall a good selection of well cooked food which was tasty, finished off with some lovely desserts off the trolley.

We visited for a Sunday carvery. The restaurant was very busy, with a very large party (50+) taking up a big area of the main restaurant. The chef serving the meat at the carvery counter was sullen, and very stingy with the meat. Two very thin slices of beef for me and two slices of very fatty pork for my partner, with an inch-square piece of pork crackling. The selection of vegetables was limited - with no sign of anything green. No sprouts, peas, green beans... Only potatoes (roast and mashed), carrots, cauliflower, parsnips and some very pale cabbage. The Yorkshire puddings were nice and the gravy was very tasty, but the whole meal looked and tasted quite bland. The staff were obviously under pressure in catering for the large party, but they had run out of desserts and said the chef was hurriedly making some more. Quite a few customers seemed to be unhappy with the wait for desserts and coffee. Altogether, I can't say it was a Sunday lunch to remember and we won't be rushing back.

Our son from London wanted to have lunch in a quiet country location and whilst driving from Norwich in to the Broadland Area we came across this place set in a large "parkland estate" so we decided to find out what was on offer. Large car park and pleasant walk to the Lodge and on entering immediately received a very warm welcome (a good start). The bar atmosphere was warm and cosy from a wood burning fireplace and we chose to sit near this. We ordered drinks served by a jolly lady who left us to study the menu. Our choice of grilled skate and roast beef was excellent. We chatted to the jolly lady (sorry to forget her name) who informed us that there is live music entertainment Sunday lunchtime, accommodation is available and people can camp in the parkland. We all agreed we made a good choice in stopping here for lunch and we will certainly visit again when next in the area.

We made our choices and placed the order at the bar and that was it - forty minutes later we decided we had waited long enough and paid for our drinks and left, we informed them that we were leaving unfed but they weren't really bothered. From the outside the lodge looked great, on entering we still felt that same feeling of anticipation,it soon diminished.service was ok for the start though the barmaid /waitress seemed to lose interest in us soon afterwards, the bar/restaurant was empty apart from ourselves&two others,we ordered just mains,a rare steak & a fish dish, we waited, we watched the other table get served starters and later they're mains,we then got ours, to be fair my partner said hers was ok, just a polite ok,mine, the steak, I requested rare/medium; it came well done and I'd bet my life-in my opinion, that it was only 7/8oz and not the 10oz as advertised ,the chips, that were advertised on the menu as hand cut or home made were of the frozen variety, which is ok, as long as you don't try to sell them as home made, during the evening we were "entertained"(or more to the point of left wondering where our food was....) periodically by "the chef"who seemed to pop out every now and then....Over all, I know it was a quiet night for the lodge, and let's be honest sometimes you let your guard down, but this place really feels lacking in management/supervision.would I go back, I wouldn't, nor would the lodge need me to, nor would anybody else as apart from a few locals the vast vast majority will be tourist, who, the lodge will not need to impress.oh, and did I complain about my alleged underweight-undercooked trading standards-ly miss advertised chips....of course not! Stopped here for a quick bite in the evening whilst passing through. Limited menu, I had pie and chips. It was hot and tasty so no complaints. I sat at a small corner table and when I went to put my bag on the floor my elbow got caught up in a whole nest of cobwebs that ran floor to ceiling. Moved to a different table and when I looked at the carpet it was glistening with slug slime! Yes you read that right!! Trails and trails of slug slime all over the carpet. I went to put my bag on the chair next to me. The chairs are covered with faded pink felt like fabric that would have been all the rage in the 70s but it was thick with long hairs all trapped in the fabric. The window sills were covered with dead flies. The bar man - am I allowed to say man in these politically correct times?? The bar person / server was however very friendly, welcoming and polite. Very depressing place, definitely needs a clean and makeover.
