The venue us quaint. The setting us lovely. The cappuccinos were excellent. The cheese scone was superb. The cornush pasty was very tasty. The service could be significantly better. We were sitting inside but were told they had made a mistake and would tpapercups be OK. They were transferred to cups but large coffees had been ordered. Fresh coffees arrived. The cheese stone arrived but where was the pasty. We sat and sat. Eventually we had to ask for the pasty. A great cafe spoiled by the inefficiency of the staff. Dogs are welcome which us another bonus.

We were looking forward to trying a Cornish pasty here. Very disappointed as not only was it meant to have meat in - all potato and no meat - it wasn’t freshly cooked so the pastry was tough. On a positive note, the cheese and onion one was very tasty

We arrived at this cafe Saturday afternoon 3:15pm, to an ‘we are open sign’. Looking forward to a cream tea we walked in to many young girls behind the counter, filling fridges and pretending to look busy. We were ignored as we stood in the cafe. I then grabbed the attention of one of the girls by saying ‘Hiya can we still get a cream tea’ as I read a sign that said kitchen closed, all tables and chairs stacked away. The reply was very cold and the service from then on was awful. The staff had a bad attitude, no personable skills and we weren’t even greeted by anyone as we went to collect our order. I am unsure why the cafe was being closed up whilst still serving customers. Closing down jobs which should be done when the cafe is shut not whilst people are still ordering and being served. Cream tea and milk shake was lovely but service needs improving dramatically.

Lovely little stop on a sunny day! We stopped for a prawn sandwich, cheese and bacon burger and a coffee. Prices were super reasonable and portions were great. Staff were super smiley even though it was non-stop busy! Would definitely recommend if you’re enjoying a stroll on the Bude canal.

Not a very good experience. Asked for very crispy bacon and this wasn’t done. The egg was burnt. Sausages weren’t suitable for a breakfast nap, the skin was too chewy. Girls serving are polite enough. Asked for pepper twice and on both occasions the mill was empty. Inside has a very strong oily smell.

Visited today and had lovely drinks. Great location and nice environment. It was fairly busy but efficient service. They give disposable cups for outside, but there are no bins. I asked inside and was pointed to an overflowing bin by the door, to jam my cups in. This was a bit disappointing.

When someone finally acknowledged me (stood for four minutes, three young girls behind counter trying to look busy doing nothing), I ordered two black coffees and two bacon baps. I was told that I had to order baps outside, where they had a bit of a burger bar effort going on. I paid for my coffees and was told that they would be brought to the table. I went outside to order food, and after another three minutes waiting, had still not been acknowledged. The burger flipper guy then began a phone call whilst preparing what looked like five or six baps. I spoke to my husband (waiting at a table inside) through an open window, saying that we could be waiting ages. With that, the guy on the phone said "you won't be ages darlin', I'm sorting out a problem". With that I went inside and said that we'd just have the coffee, but after yet another wait nothing turned up, so wd left. I'm not going to complain about the loss of best part of £6.00, as we chose to leave, but the whole experience was dire.

Came into today after a walk along the beach with my partner, just a short walk away from summerleaze beach. Warm and welcoming welcome from staff and a great atmosphere. Dogs welcome which we found really good especially with the weather turning we didn’t have to sit outside because we had our dog. My husband had the ham and cheese toastie which was very tasty, with a generous filling. And I tried there new soup they had available. It was delicious, homemade by one of the ladies that worked there. And also very good coffee and a great selection of cakes.

In a prime location this cafe is perfectly place by the canal, and for visitors to Summerleaze Beach, and the library. Food is generally good, with some great options, and they make a great coffee. Prices are fair. This could easily get 5 star reviews, but for me (and my guests) it is slightly let down by the staff. On our recent visits it has felt a bit disorganised and not particularly friendly. I understand it is busy but….. On the most recent occasion we were two people and both went inside to make our choices, of course that meant we couldn’t be 100% sure of which outdoor table we would be at, and were left feeling this was a real inconvenience to the staff. Surely taking a name and noting it on the order would be an easy solution? As there was a long wait for food, and because the staff weren’t pleasant we decided just to have coffee. The coffee was nice, but delivered slopped into saucers with no apology or attempt to fix the problem. To be fair there has been better service on other days. On the plus side food has been good on the occasions we have actually eaten, and I would come back

Worst bacon & sausage sandwich ever!!! Bacon was undercooked, the fat was still white and clammy. The sausages were only brown on one side, and were tough. Was not offered any choices of bread preference, so only had tasteless white. Butter/marg was only put on one slice of the bread rather than both. Didn’t eat it. Did t complain as dont like to make a fuss in front of other customers. Totally disappointed after reading such good reviews. Would have taken photo but had left my phone in car.

Clean, quirky seating which was charming and welcoming, and such nice friendly staff. Food ordered and was served in good time, lovely cup of coffee and a superb bacon sandwich, one of the best I have had in a long time. Nice music played at reasonable volume throughout and the whole place feels welcoming and personal and friendly. Definitely on my favourites list of places to go, for that 'ahhhhh relax' moment.

Mixed review and i want to stress that this is a polite moan. Food was lovely and reasonably priced and the tea room clearly takes the current covid situation seriously but I felt awkward for a lady who just wanted her child to have a quick look at the dessert selection. I was happy to step back whilst they looked (I was next to be served) but the lady was almost barked at by someone behind the counter. I’m surprised she ordered something as it would be enough to make me walk out. There are places to stand to observe the meter rulings “ You can now stand here-you can now move forward” from the staff. There are ways of managing the covid situation without making customers feel like they’d entered a boot camp. Personally I’d opt for somewhere else next time. Shame as the food is nice-and this isn’t just my grumble i overheard another table pretty much mirroring my comments.

Once again we were in Bude on the warf and visiting The Lock Gates .On this visit we sat outside which was quite busy but the tables we distanced away from the next .My wife went inside to order our food and drinks ,there is a strict limit to how many that are aloud in at any one time . As you walk through the main door you are asked to sanitize your hands with the gel that is provided. You are invited to approach the counter to place your order , after which you use the one way system on your way out .It was quite busy but it did not seem long and the young waitress came to our table with our food .Nothing seemed to much trouble as she politely asked if we needed anything else .As we were eating our food we got talking to the people on the next table that had finished their meal .Not knowing we had been before they proceeded to tell us what a great place it was and the owners and staff were charming ,which I already knew .They continued to tell me that after you leave the table they are sanitized As was the chairs, one again our food was wonderful and i think very well priced .We can't wait to visit again .

Nice pasties, nice warm large scones and tea in a proper China cup. Staff were vigilant, sanitising each set of table and chairs after use, sanitiser in the queue. No toilets though and rather expensive for cream tea imho. Nevertheless I'd recommend.

We spotted a table available outside so chose to have a spot of lunch here. Good choice of food (if slightly expensive) and it was generally tasty, however our main issue is how un-Covid safe this cafe is. Our young waitress didn’t wear her mask properly, handled our drinks glasses by the top without gloves, leaned over us far too much when giving / taking plates and she wasn’t the only member of staff either poorly trained or with the wrong attitude to the seriousness of this. Inside was better - sanitizer & floor markers and safe ordering but sadly the waitresses need to up their game.

Came in with a big group of motorcyclists after a long, organised ride of about 40 bikes. My partner initially went inside to buy a caramel latte for me and a tea for himself. I sipped my coffee after stirring with the supplied stick, and it was still a little bitter for me; I guessed he had just forgotten to say caramel latte, as I couldn't taste any caramel. I then also made my way inside just to ask for a little more sugar. I went inside with my drink and stood behind another customer to wait and ask for a sugar sachet. I spotted the hand sanitiser on a little table, but unfortunately I am unable to use it due to eczema and very sensitive skin. This obviously hasn't been a problem for me as it's always optional to use it and I tend not to touch stuff anyway, besides, I only needed a sugar sachet I wasn't even handing over money and I had my coffee cup already in my hand.I was approached, somewhat ominously, by a man I initially assumed to be another customer, as he had no uniform or badge. He asked me, in no kind manner, to use the hand sanitizer. I said that I'm sorry, but I'm unable to use it due to being allergic. The man then dramatically gestured to the door, which I was only just through, and told me very rudely that in that case I should leave. I replied saying I thought that was pretty discriminatory (which in law, it is: Discrimination Arising from a Medical Condition, listed in the Equality Act), and that all I wanted was a sachet of sugar. The man spoke over me and didn't listen to me, saying that some other customer has said they were allergic too, as if somehow that made my apology less valid..? The lady behind the counter then chimed in, shouting across the room at me that she 'put sugar in both drinks and a stirrer in both too' as if somehow that magically made my coffee no longer a bitter, watery soup. I stood there, literally gobsmacked, and simply repeated that all I wanted was some sugar. Eventually the lady gave me (sorry, placed on the sanitiser table from an arms reach away) a single sugar sachet. As I left they yelled after me that they were trying to keep themselves safe. I'm genuinely very sorry that you were frightened of a young woman politely asking for a sachet of sugar, I promise never to darken your doorstep again. Lord knows, I'm not anxious to return and once again be harrased because of my medical condition. Maybe if you are so afraid of the general population you should consider closing your doors for good so you can sanitise your skin off at home to your hearts content.

I then went in to say we will be eating here.. by the same girl I was rudely told it was only for customers after i’d already said we would be eating here. The female owner then came over and took me and my daughter back outside to show us where the public toilets were. I have never been treated in such an appalling manner. This is an usual review to write but I was totally appalled by the staff here today. My young son was desperate to go to the toilet so my husband politely asked a waitress outside if we could use the facilities and was told a firm 'no' and then whilst my son hopped from one leg to another and my husband asked where the closest toilet was, then was told 'oh somewhere over there'. As my husband and son ran off in the vague direction of the nearest bathroom I aghast at this went in to challenge and I presumed i spoke with the rude and extremely unkind owner who told me 'if your son was desperate he wouldn't have had time to put the code in to access the toilet!' I am just totally appalled. How rude and extremely unkind. The irony this pathetic self righteous establishment is called 'The Locked Gate'.

A special place to visit. All of the food is delicious. Lovely place to eat outside overlooking the canal on a sunny day. Highly recommended.

Tried this small cafe on the last day of our trip in Bude. I had a pulled pork wrap and husband had a pasty with salad garnish, very tasty and satisfying. Hot chocolate with the works x 2! Wow. Looked very impressive. Lovely decor inside and very friendly staff, was lovely to see the three front of house laughing and joking with each other while working, even the chef came out and joined them.

My wife and I visit most of the cafes in Bude over time as we live in Bude. The Lock Gates is one of our special places to go. This is because the food and coffee are both excellent - tasty, well presented, and very reasonably priced - the surroundings are pleasant and different - and the staff very friendly. This is not a two minutes in and out type of place. Especially when busy be prepared to wait for food as it is cooked to order. However if you prefer fresh just-cooked food then it's worth it. The location is good - just round the corner from the quay, canal and castle, with a carpark close by. Restricted opening hours during the winter with normal hours starting again c end February or March. They do a very good Sunday lunch as well - but you would need to book.

We came to Bude for a walk and came across this cafe in a sheltered spot, it was windy. The service was so friendly, encouraging us and our three dogs to escape the hail. The food was tasty and filling and just what was needed. They even had treats for the dogs. We both left feeling they made us so welcome that we said we must sing their praises. Thank you.

Myself and my wife were visiting Bude with the dogs (Two). We stopped off at the cafe for lunch. We both had cream teas (cream first) which were fresh and lovely. The service was great and a very nice lady gave the dogs a couple of biscuits which was really nice touch. We chose to sit outside as the dogs had just been running around the beach but you can sit inside with dogs to, there are a couple of other cafes nearby that do not allow this, its a nice option if you have the dogs.

My daughter just took part in the Awesome Foursome, a terrific calorie burning event involving four disciplines of swim, bike, kayak and run. Fortunately for spectators this is a lovely part of Bude right by the Canal, where the transitions take place for each discipline. I had spotted the tea room whilst she was out on the bike and also noticed it did gluten free food, which is all she will eat. By the close of the race, our group was five and all hungry, so we made the short walk to an outside bench on a now warm autumnal afternoon. We made the order inside and within what seemed like a few minutes plates of our delicious food arrived. It is well presented and garnished with salad that you can eat rather than just admire. I'm also a bit of a teaholic, so love it when a large hot pot is provided with real milk to wash the food down with. The tea room is blessed with a nice setting and my only annoyance was that with a bit of forethought I could have sat here with tea and something sweet during the kayak section as I would have only had to walk ten paces to the waters edge each time my daughter passed by, she would have been none the wiser as to my taking time out of spectating. Oh well, she'll just have to come back next year and compete again.

We visited here as a family. The service was quick and the cream tea was delicious. We ordered 2 cream teas between four of us as there were two scones per cream tea. Served with clotted cream and strawberry jam, the scones were delicious. Lovely location near Bude canal and Summerleaze beach.

Sadly another vegan failure on my second week in Bude. I ordered a jacket potato with three bean chilli for lunch, explained I was a vegan (it’s marked vegan in the menu) and was assured it would be. The person who took my order even wrote “no dairy” on the order.

We had a delightful coffee here on our recent holiday. Also the staff were very understanding when we asked if our autistic granddaughter could drink her own juice and could not have been more helpful. They even asked if the hot chocolate was for an adult or a child as if its for a child they make it cooler so as not to burn their mouth! The coffee was excellent and the single toilet was spotless and accessed via a coded lock to the outer door. The whole place was a delight - small but perfectly formed as they say!

I had a traditional cream and jame scone. I agree with a review below that the scone tasted a bit strange and the cream and jam (not quality jam) were served in small plastic tubs- bizarre! Plenty of other places to try in Bude.

I visit regularly from London and always have to have at least one visit to the Lock Gates. I'm gluten intolerant and vegetarian and have never been disappointed by the delicious food or the fantastic staff who always go out of their way to accommodate me. Today I had a gluten free hummus wrap and gluten free lemon drizzle, both were excellent. I ordered the wrap for takeaway as a picnic and they kindly wrapped it in foil to keep it cool without even being asked. Looking forward to the next visit already (may be tomorrow!) and especially looking forward to the possibility of a return of the gluten free millionaire's shortbread which was possibly the best cake I've had anywhere.

Service and tea were fine but the scones were dry. I think they're made with bicarbonate of soda, that's what it tasted like. They were ok with cream and jam but not the nicest scones I've tasted...... It was clean and the staff were friendly.

We came down from up North for a few days (25th-30th June) and visited on the Friday. Despite being busy there was a lovely atmosphere and our food was with us much quicker than I would have expected for the time of day!! The staff were all very friendly and the young man who cleared our table was very polite as was the young lady who served us! A credit to their generation!! The food was excellent, especially for the price and to be perfectly honest, I have nothing to complain about! I don't usually write reviews but I felt like this place deserved one! Will definitely be visiting again!

Absoloutley horrible service. The tea was awful, with mouldy scones. I couldn’t destinguish the difference between loft installation and these scones. The man who served us was ignorant and rude. His breath was rancid and put me off my tea. I’ve seen Mexican prison cells cleaner than them toilets.

Cornwall is all about cream teas and the scones here are amazing. Even more noteworthy is their homemade custard tart, so creamy and delicious you don't want It to end. Returned for another slice the next day only to see the last slice sold, disaster. In it's stead opted for a piece of bread pudding, superb and just like mother use to make. A lovely café full of homemade goodies. Will be back.

We were on holiday and ended up eating here 3 times. We had our dog who typically was nervous in eating places so we never bothered eating out, we were given a table in the corner and asked for the same one every time which they obliged as she was settled, it helped that the staff were all so helpful and the food was so nice, would highly recommend the Pityme Inn and we will visit again, it made our holiday

The staff were very friendly. The hot drinks were alright and the cakes were alright. They didn't rush us. The whole atmosphere was really nice and lovely. I didn't have to raise my voice to speak to my boyfriend who has a hearing impairment which is a hearing aid.
