New owners yet again, it had improved with the previous owner ( the Scottish lad) but went in last week. One fella in the building on a busy day. Not even any glass collectors. No glasses for my pint so had to wait for them to be washed. Not the guy,s fault he was very apologetic but the new manager whom we have never met is obviously not bothered about the place. Just wish this place which we have been going to over 30 years would get a manager who cares, is available and takes care of his staff. On the plus side the atmosphere was better as the last manager got rid of most of the riff-raff. Carling available. Nice pint. Darts , pool and sky sports so our kinda pub. Or was.

Great service and relaxing atmosphere

Just been to this pub and thought I should drop a review to say how lovely it was. Atmosphere was fantastic and it was nice to go to the bar with how friendly they all were.

Great place, great food. New server accidentally made me underpay. Experienced server took responsibility and didn’t let me pay the difference after I offered. 4/5 on atmosphere just because some drunks almost got in a fight.

Can’t comment on food as didn’t eat. Drinks reasonably priced, nice little boozer.

Average pub but decent beer 🍺 garden.

Decent, just need to be a little busier as it lacks a little atmosphere when quiet. Good drinks choice and ideal for watching football.

Perfect for families and party crowds alike. My family have visited this bar for a meal and drinks - great choice of food and excellent value. Toni looks after everybody. For the lads and ladies on a session - great selection of beers, wines and spirits - brilliant atmosphere, I really recommend this bar. Recommended establishment from the SR.

This is the most amazing local I’ve ever drank in!!!!!! I work away all year and I walked into this pub a stranger and left a Friend For Life!!!!! People of Shirley please do yourself a favour and go to The Lion!!!! I swear to you the pubs reputation precedes it!!! The Lion is probably the most friendly, welcoming pub I’ve ever drank in. Recent refurb has definitely brightened the place up....much needed!!! Now needs to develop a new character!!

Nice pub alsince the refit. Was there to watch the commonwealth games opening ceremony. The service was quick and friendly - they have neck oil on tap (which is always a win) And sell some really good poppadom crisps with mango chutney.

We thought why not try the Red Lion as it's been overhauled, surprised that there were quite a few tables free, so we sat down with drink and someone behind the bar thought lets turn the music up so loud that we can't talk. You can quess what happened next straight across the road to Wetherspoon

Come every Wednesday for the quiz. Food is great, cheap drinks and open till 12 at weekends

Great place to have a drink and a bite to eat. Clean and tidy. Friendly staff, and loads of space. If you like live sports there are TVs showing Sky etc at every angle. Highly recommend .

Great to have a proper sports bar in Shirley with quality screens. Good range of draught lagers too. Only negative was people taking up space at the bar on a busy night. Will be back, certainly for the World Cup.

Very good. The TV are a little loud..but it is a sports bar but this can limit conversation.

Very nice inside after a big refurb. Great choice of alcohol. Great sports bar with a pool table and dart board. Not many seats in there so you need to get there early if you want to be in there for a football match. Outside has plenty of seating with a telly outside.

Went to watch the rugby with family. Good views of TV although shame we couldn't hear the commentary. The staff were so lovely, including the chef and food good too. Lovely atmosphere, well done!

I went for lunch 5 star the staff were great and the food different to the usual run of the mill I had a mutton curry and pea rice and pam had pulled pork wraps and a great pint of trad ale thanks again just a great luntch time treat!!

This place is a real lions Den, the pride of Shirley, make your way to the best watering hole around, maybe even grab a bite to eat.

We see great things happening at The Lion, the future is very bright for these guys, let's hope they use us when we start deliver services.

Massive improvement on the old Lion. Bright, spacious and welcoming, with decent beer. Pool table in the back room was free too, with just a £5 deposit on the cue.

Came in to watch the Kidderminster v West Ham game. They turned it off with 10 mins to go to stick the Ireland v wales rugby game on. They have 2 tv feeds, but turned both to the rugby, leaving me with not seeing the end of a very good game of football. Very poor customer service. Oh and they are getting rid of the lovely inch’s cider, for the processed rubbish strongbow. When I mentioned it was a poor choice the barman responded ‘quite a few people have said that’ - well why the hell would you change it then?!?!

first time in here, but it definitely won't be our last, great atmosphere and the food well it was amazing.. the other half is a chef and was a very happy man....well done guys Shirley needed you 😀

DO NOT go to Weatherspoons! The red lion served a fantastic breakfast this morning, tasty and well presented. They are not amateurs. Every time I’ve popped in the staff have been very friendly and welcoming with enthusiastic young bar men and women it’s very refreshing. I praise the new management at the red lion around. The renovation is more than surface level. I wish them all the success they deserve… 5/5

I never went when it was the Red Lion, however following a huge refurbishment with new management and new staff, it's a pretty nice sports bar. On Thursdays they have a Caribbean food night which is great. The only thing I'd change is a bit more craft beers and ales on tap, however that's just my preference and a few if the taps were off when I went last.

Trying to cater to Ale drinkers, foodies, Carling Academy and football fans, which, in my experience means the Ale drinkers will soon reduce in numbers and so will the amount of ales available. Can't knock the owner though, in times like these. I can see it getting messy on a weekend though as its open till 3am

My daughter, friend, and I went to the red lion last night. I have to be honest I wasn't expecting much as I know how much the hospitality industry has suffered throughout covid. How wrong could I be!. From the moment we walked in, it was warm, friendly, and very welcoming. Yes, it's a little bit outdated, it's what I would call a proper pub, not one of these large chain soulless, lifeless places. It has character and characters, a very wide age range of customers, and all of which were treated equally the same. They had an impromptu karaoke , which was fantastic, so much so that my daughter got up to sing! It's warm, friendly, attentive staff and manageress made it the best night we've had since covid, and we'll be returning for the remaining time it's open. Well done to all who are there and thank you for a very needed great night.

No nonsense, does what it says on the tin, working class boozer. If you're looking for pretentious surroundings & posey clientele, forget it. If you're after decent beer & spirits in a down to earth environment, this one's for you. Great pub👍

Go there again, new landlords have spruced it up recently, much lighter inside. No food yet.

To be honest fell on this place. Was heading for the local spoons which had a que to get in. All the staff were amazing especially the young barmaid who was really helpful and friendly. Guy who I imagine was the landlord found us a table really quickly an the beer was perfect. Thank you all x

Its an old back street boozer. If you want a pint. It does the job. Bar, tables, seats and a few fruities. Think the might have a pool table out back.

Probably one of the few old style friendly pubs still in existence. Joe the Landlord and his wife Denise make everyone feel welcome. The staff are very attentive and quick to serve you. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. The type of pub where you can have a quiet chat and enjoy a great selection of excellent drinks. Don't forget to take cash, the card system hasn't yet caught up with this great pub. Highly recommended and well worth a visit. Parking right outside the Pub which is free after 18.00 hrs.

Great local pub in Shirley with lots of special beers and great value cobs. No annoying modern music and a very safe environment for a quiet grown up night out. Highly recommended. Parking outside or across the Stratford Road. Mike Kelly.

Turnout for the Folk Music and Song Session may have been ko, due to holidays etc, but we made up for it in quality. Fourth Tuesday of each month.
