Definitely not the best eating experience. No atmosphere and indifferent staff. Food was poor watery sauces cheap ingredients factory made fish goujons with Tata sauce from a jar my wife couldn't eat. Cheap prawns and she is still looking for the crab in the starter. The venison steak was ok but some of the worst potatoes I've had. Definitely won't be going back.

We went there in September 2021 for dinner and were very pleased with the level of service and the quality of food provided. It is evidently run by two couples, the females being front of house and the males in the back. The staff were very polite and helpful and thankfully were vigilant of covid precautions. No entry without first sanitising your hands and masks used by staff.I had the venison and my partner had the lamb shoulder, both of which were delicious. Both desserts were also scrummy. We enjoyed it so much that we enquired if we could book for the following night, Unfortunately, they were fully booked for that night but upon leaving they said they could squeeze us in if we came early. Which we did! Thank you and we will return.

Had an amazing meal here we arrived slightly late but was still welcomed the staff were lovely and the food was absolutely beautiful would definitely go back and recommend. I'm a really fussy eater but there was plenty to choose from and it was honestly the most flavoursome food I've had in a while, some of the reviews did make me slightly nervous but we had a really good experience it was also a very reasonable price thank you.

We ate twice at the Lighthouse it was so good! First time we booked by phone and BYOB was pointed out to us. We couldn't have been made to feel more welcome on arrival, all staff were very friendly. The choice of food was amazing and our order was taken when we were ready, not rushed in any way, the food arrived freshly cooked and was perfect. not at all rushed between courses either. We booked there and then for a second visit and got the same warm welcome. Just wish we had been staying on the Island for another week.

Unfortunately we did not have a good experience at the restaurant. When we made the booking we were not advised it’s BYOB, which isn’t the end of the world as we are not big drinkers but it was our anniversary so would have been nice to have a glass of wine.We drove 45mins to the restaurant we were not made to feel welcome. We got the feeling as tourists we weren’t welcome. The food was nice but all came very fast so made us think it’s not freshly cooked. Was very fast food in and out in well under the hour. Due to how uncomfortable we felt we did not stay for desert or coffee. I have to say one last was a lot nicer than the other and more friendly. We would not return to this restaurant.

As we were staying close by we booked a table here as soon as we arrived. However, after reading Mike W and Dunny Moore's reviews I was a little concerned, but I assumed that they would be just of those kinds of people who complained about most things in life. Fortunately, my assumptions were correct. Our experience was very positive with friendly and accommodating staff that made you feel most welcome. The food arrived at just the right time and was wonderful. The setting was beautiful and the perfect end to a wonderful holiday... well... almost.... we still have a couple of days to go. If any of the negative reviews put you off... ignore them. Either they arrived in bad moods or make a habit of being wingers. Me and my family had a great time and will definitely be booking a table here next time we are on Arran.

Location - fantastic, looking out over the sound to the west, very ambient for an evening meal on a clear evening as the sun went down over the water and neighbouring island.Service - as with other recent reviews, perfuctory overall. Somewhat hostile welcome on arrival querying whether we had a reservation, alongside a rather direct request to sanitise. Once seated, service was more amiable and staff checked in regularly, although overall it was difficult to feel at ease. Can only think COVID is a factor here - we attended when the variant had just hit the island and restaurants were having to close or reduce service everywhere. It is understandable that staff may have been anxious about this.Food - starters were good, mains were average. Partner found poached fish to be well-cooked but lacking in flavour. Pork belly arrived without crackling and did not taste as though slow-cooked for some time. Vegetable sides were a bit soggy and flavourless.Dessert however was excellent, really tasty sticky toffee pudding and good quality coffee to go with. It's a decent hike to get to Pirnmills for an average meal overall. You cant argue with the western side of Arran tho - magic and it wouldnt take much for this place to be knockout. Driving back over the String Road with the evening light and low-hanging cloud moving to envelop Goatfell was great too. Remember BYO too - no bottle shop nearby so come prepared if wine with dinner is your thing (we were very happy with soft drinks).

Our evening began with a peremptory 'Sanitise your hands before you come in!' at the entrance - no 'Good evening' or 'Welcome' before we were told 'There's your table. Someone will take your order in ten minutes.'This was at 6.30 pm when only one other other table was occupied, with two other members of staff standing at the bar. When our order was eventually taken, we were asked if we had 'brought a bottle' - there is no drinks licence. We said 'no' because we don't drink alcohol and asked for a soft drink. The choice was very limited (fine for children) but not for us, so we said that we'd just have water. When the food (Three Bean and Vegetable Chilli and Haddock, Chips and Peas) arrived it looked fine, but the batter on the fish was thick and chewy and the fish itself tasteless. The chips were clearly frozen, as were the garden peas. The chilli was adequate with its accompanying couscous. Then a waitress appeared with a dish of vegetables which she left on the table. We were not sure whose they were meant to be, but their appearance (of soggy leftovers) was enough to put us off. When a party of 14 were seated next to us (which led to all of the adults standing in a crowd next to us to read the menu on the blackboard on the wall, without any masks, social distancing or comment by the staff), we decided that dessert was not for us, so paid the bill and left.Altogether poor service and mediocre food. We will not be returning to the Lighthouse!

We hadn't expected a cordon bleu experience at the Lighthouse but we had expected a good basic standard of cooking. We'd also expected a friendly welcome and service, especially given how long restaurants have had to wait for customers to return.Unfortunately we were disappointed on both fronts. Firstly the food... We both chose slow-cooked Arran lamb. It arrived swamped in a sea of uninspiring gravy, covered with a large pile of mash, and with a bowl of mixed cubed carrots and swede, and a few bits of broccoli. Nothing really had much flavour left and the veg had obviously been badly frozen so had a weird texture as well as being tasteless.Secondly the service. We seriously began to wonder if we'd managed offend the waitresses in some way as the meal progressed (if we had, I wish they'd have told us why) especially the shorter grey-haired one. They were curt and unsmiling throughout. It started soon after we'd arrived (spot on our 6.30pm booked time) with one of them telling us after 5 minutes that she wouldn't be taking our order for 10 minutes. As we knew that they had to close at 8pm (Covid rules), this was a bit worrying. She then stood by the bar apparently just waiting for the requisite 10 minutes to elapse before returning. What was all that about? We were never given an explanation!Maybe we chose the wrong dish and the waitresses were just having a bad night - or maybe not...

Dropped in for a quick lunch and coffee. On arrival the owner was outside talking to some locals, there was no acknowledgement that I was there and the owner walked inside. The neighbours from next door kindly got me a menu from inside.I went inside to order , the woman serving was not at all welcoming and I was asked to pay upfront which was not a problem.I sat outside to eat, the lunch itself was awful, the panini stale and inedible. I drank my coffee and left, no wonder I was asked to pay upfront!Despite no one checking that all was ok, by the time I had walked across the road the table had been cleared!Extremely disappointed particularly in these hard times, I expected at least a friendly welcome that the rest of the Island has managed to give.I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone based on the stale lunch and miserable staff.

Travelling with a 4YO can create potential issues when eating out. Did not need to worry about that here - the two servers were great with him and us. He really enjoyed his freshly-made chicken goujons and strawberry ice-cream.Great location meant that we saw the sunset over Kintyre on arrival. In terms of food, very extensive list of main courses to suit all tastes at reasonable prices (mostly £13-16 - steak was £19). Very large portions of venison and lamb were accompanied by generous vegetable sides. Seafood cocktail and strawberry meringue (delicious and home-made) were well-presented too. While I recognise that Pirnmill is a remote part of a small island, some small things would have improved our visit. Granary bread (not white) with the seafood cocktail, less deep-fired starters, better seasoning (starter and mains - and their respective dressings and gravies), roast potatoes or roots (lamb came with mash). Although we ate everything else, the banoffee pie (too much base and not enough caramel) needed re-work.Even so, I would still return for another visit, especially with no corkage charge.

Went there for lunch,? post golf. We were told we were not allowed anything from the menu on the board - they were saving that for the evening despite the table next to us clearly having a meal from the board. There was a really limited basic lunch menu sandwiches/jacket potatoes. We asked for coffee - apparently the coffee machine wasn’t working. My husband asked for a cafetière - they didn’t have one and said that they could make ‘instant’ instead. He had tea. The two ladies who served us seemed really unhelpful and unhappy - we felt a hindrance to their day and they behaved like they would rather be anywhere else. Our sandwiches were OK but nothing special - they were supposed come with crisps - the ladies said they didn’t have any (there is a shop next door). We have had some wonderful meals and lovely service elsewhere on Arran despite Covid so the attitude from the ladies in the Lighthouse we all felt was completely unjustified and unusual. Perhaps evening meals presented a different picture (the menu looked good).

Our first meal out since COVID, 6 months of waiting and it was well worth it. Food and service as good ever, solid menu, never disappoints, beautifully cooked, great views. Delighted to see that a solid family run business such as this which has brought so much joy has survived and is thriving once again. It remains the best value delicious meal on the island. Arran's workers are sturdy, it'll take more than a driech spell of weather or a pandemic (a tsunami?) to stop them.

Visited here on Sunday 25th June with husband who is vegetarian. Got informed when sitting down that only vegetarian main meal on board had finished and that chef would cook some pasta, tomato sauce and vegetables and asked if this ok and suggestion accepted. Then got told soup would be tomato and again this was accepted but thought not much in way of variety of starters/main meal. When soup turned up it was lentil which husband patiently ate. Then main turned up and to our surprise it was a small bowl of mushroom, pepper, onion in what appeared to be a cream sauce which was tasteless. Served with overcooked brocolli and other veg. I don't recommend this place if you are veggie....looks like it might need a bit of tlc from the veggie version of Gordon Ramsay! I'm not veggie and my food was ok but ruined our night out due to disappointment.

I wouldn’t normally review somewhere I hadn’t eaten but was so taken aback at the reception I received I decided to do this. We stopped for a takeaway teas and coffees on our way back from walking we were planning on booking dinner later in the week. Walked in at 5.15 and politely asked for 1 x coffe and 3 x tea to take away. Was told Very Bluntly We only do meals in the evening. That’s not what the sign outside indicates and there was 4 staff visible and one table occupied! I duly left and the owners husband came out 5 mins later whilst we were sitting on the bench across the road apologised and offered the drinks was tempted to refuse but felt that would be stooping to the level of the rude individual who first refused me. Needless to say we didn’t book dinner for 5 due to this very poor first experience. Also ‘ toilets for customers only’ have never saw this anywhere else on Arran.! No pubs nearby so the worst you’re likely to get is a hillwalker or someone with children. The 2 stars are for the nice husband trying to make amends and the beverages which were good quality and cheap

It's a big room so it could accommodate us all -- and we were all served fast. The menu is on a big blackboard to one side of the room and ranged from vegetarian to fish and meat options. Some of our group had starters of soup and prawns, they were cooked in a light batter and very nice. Mains were venison (huge piece), cod and lamb -- I had the guinea fowl -- boiled potatoes and vegetables were brought to the table as sides. Many had deserts, the sticky toffee pudding got compliments I remember.

We have dined here on several occasions over the last 10 years and every single time it is without fault. The menu is varied and constantly changing. The setting is simply breath taking. It's worth a trip to the island purely for dinner! Please keep doing what you do so well!

Food was fine but overpriced £5 for a bowl of soup which took a long time to be served. Think this was poor value.

This is our second visit here over the last two years. Love the setting - we both had fish and chips which was beautiful. As others have said, the restaurant isn't licensed but soft drinks are available, otherwise do take your own alcohol. Highly recommended.

Stopped in for 3 course meal. The haggis in whiskey sauce was amazing. The fish was underseasoned and a bit tasteless but the pudding were to die for. Very reasonable priced food with a lovely view across the sea to Kintyre. I would definately recommend this restaurant.

Tucked away on the west coast of Arran this gem of a restaurant will live up to your expectations. A word of warning - it isn't licensed so bring your own booze! The menu caters for all tastes and the food is excellent.

Went here for an evening meal. The restraint is ligh and fairly modern looks like it has had been updated fairly recently. Three of us had dinner and dessert. The mains were a good portion, the belly pork had been slowly cooked and fell apart, the salmon was perfectly cooked and the lamb was juicy and tender, all came with a good helping of veggies on the side. Deserts were equally delicious especially the chocolate brownie.

Crisp, light tempura batter for Haggis balls, flavourful and pretty fish trio and a generous portion of deep fried Brie with colourful salad started our meals. The position on the Kintyre side of the island is a little trek but so worth it. Seafood cabin style interior, simple by elegant and lots of the eponymous Lighthouse in decorative form. Service is cheery and prompt - two course done without rush in just over an hour. We visited as a prelude to the Ceilidh at Lochranza and it made a memorable evening. Our main courses were generous sizes - too big to allow dessert - and all three meats beautifully tender. Chicken stuffed with cream cheese was slightly lacking seasoning but the venison had a gentle richness accompanied well by a not-over-sweet red cabbage. The lamb ‘could have been eaten with a spoon’. Nice fresh veg completed the meal. It’s BYOB but that is no disadvantage. Thoroughly recommend.

We dined again at the Lighthouse last week. We have been visiting the Isle of Arran for better than 45 years ! This is by far the best eating place on the Island. The Blackboard menu is very varied and you will struggle not to find your best choice. The food is magnificent and all served quickly and hot with lovely fresh vegetables. (Not often the case on the Island). This is a reliable choice for a really good meal. You can take your own wine too !

Went on a daytrip to Arran with my Dad and boyfriend and had been looking forward to having a late lunch here after climbing Goatfell and doing some tourist things. The Lighthouse had excellent reviews and advertised that they served food until 15.00. We arrived at 14:40 and were told that the Chef had gone off early to watch the football. Very disappointing that they had not thought to advertise this and could not even offer us basic food such as sandwiches.

Had a lovely evening meal, sat by a window looking out to sea. Very friendly and helpful staff. Very nice meal, nothing could have been better. As they don’t have a licence don’t forget to call into the P.O/shop next door to pick up your wine/beer first (no corkage).

Visited 2017 and had a wonderful meal, chicken breast stuffed with haggis. Returned last week, this was no longer on the menu, but they prepared it for me anyway, delicious. Will be back before I leave the island.

This was our 7th successive year on Arran and The Lighthouse is always a highlight. As always excellent fresh, homemade food. The best haggis in the world. There were 13 in our group this time and everyone was delighted with their choices. I chose venison for the second time in the week! We finished the evening with a sing song which is becoming our trade mark at The Lighthouse. Thank you to Alison and the team as always. If you are on Arran don’t miss it. Worth the extra drive and take your own wine.

We booked in advance and I am glad we did as the Friday when went was quite busy so we had a table by the window with great views. The service was great and the staff were really friendly and we were not rushed. We were able to take our own wine as they are not licenced and there was no corkage charge! It was an excellent meal. Highly recommended!

Enjoyed a good lunch here with the family. The kids options were goof and very well cooked. Lovely battered chicken, home cooked fries and beans. The fries were excellent and I had to stop myself pinching them. The adults in the party had soup and sandwich which was fine. There seed to be quite a lot on offer on the specials board.

It's as well to reserve a table here as its popularity is well deserved. It's situated right by the sea with lovely views if the weather is kind. You bring your own wine (or in our case Arran beer) - we suggest the Co-op in Brodick - not many other options). Food is local and generously presented and the style of cooking is very professional but unfussy. Service is very friendly and efficient and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening here..

When visiting any restaurant etc I feel it important to be made to feel welcome after all it's common curtesy. On entering the lighthouse which had about 10 to 12 people eating we were met by a stony faced woman who's welcoming line was ... "no dogs it's health and safety". Fair enough and so we put our pooch out into the car before returning to acquire a bowl of soup advertised at £4:50 with bread.

We have been quite a lot and every time we are there we leave having to unbutton our trousers! The food is absolutely amazing and for us the menu is great. Some people may find that they can't find anything they like as the menu isn't that big, but for the majority of people they will find something they like. The menu has options like steak, balmoral chicken, seafood and venison - I am not sure what the vegetarian options are as I have never had the need to look at them! All the meals are big hearty meals that fill you up to the brim and just taste amazing! They do their own twists on some meals as well! Try and save some space for the desserts as they too are amazing. The staff are so friendly and the scenery is beautiful. Try get a window seat so you can look at the sea!

Great lunch spot, fab team of polite, cheerful and energetic staff - Megan and Annie in particular are superb. Menu seems more limited on some days than other for no apparent reason but everything produced is good quality, tasty and reasonable portion sizes. Always feel it could do with more tables than it has!
