Recently moved to the area, thought we’d try this fish & chip shop, glad we did, fish & chips are delicious & great portion sizes. Highly recommend!

Grabbed a quick fish and chip supper here last night when passing through Large cod and chips and mushy peas £11.80 (gulp) Not had fish and chips recently and perhaps it’s now the going rate? I know cod has gone up etc etc Good portion of chips and. I felt booked The cod felt like a medium to me Peas on the small side I thought Good though

We tried the children’s fish bites and chips and the fish was lovely and extremely good value for money. The adults had sausage and chips and they were cooked to perfection. Definitely recommend.

This chip shop is much improved and worth a visit. Plenty of veggie and gluten free options. Deep fried halloumi comes with sweet chilli sauce. Also you can order via Just Eat and collect.

We are fairly new to the area and have tried several chippies now. This is most definitely our go to. The chips are the best - true chip shop chips. We order via Just Eat and go in to collect. Staff have always been friendly. I always have chicken breast which is cooked perfectly - not too dry as can often be the case with chippy chicken. Highly recommended

We ordered two battered sausages and chips, with curry sauce.A simple fix, you might think? Not so for the denizens of the Lemon Plaice.What we unknowing took home, to be revealed on the kitchen counter, was what you'd expect someone to make if they'd only had the dish described to them.What we discovered was a small mountain of chips, topped by a battered sausage which would have found itself embarrassed by a chipolata. (In all seriousness, this sausage was shorter than a coke can, and about as round as a 50 pence piece.)Surely this would be the end of this saga of sadness?Think again, dear reader.After eating about half of the chips (no mean feat, I can tell you), I unearthed a hair which was certainly not mine (I'm bald) and not my partners (she's not a brunette).The rest of the meal was promptly binned, hoping we hadn't swallowed anything other than chips.The curry sauce, however was not bad. Two stars.

Never answer the phone to place an order, normally give up and have an Indian. Pretty poor food. The gluten free fish is pathetic and the worst I’ve tasted. Chips always undercooked. Have tried many times to use it as very much local but if we manage to place an order it’s not worth it. won't give it a change any more

Food is more than acceptable but the staff have no idea how to run a business. Arrived at 7.30 with 3 customers and they had no fish ! All kept waiting 15 min plus. One pretends to cook, one serves everyone and one takes orders. Polite enough but no idea on customer service or how to best use staff resource.

Lovely traditional fish and chip shopAlways busy so the fish is fresh and the chips are good and chunky.Does burgers sausages and pies the usual stuff. Staff are very friendly and the shop is very clean You can see out the back(i like that in a take away)They have a nice bench which is nice is your order is being cooked fresh before your eyes.Reasonable price as well you get a good portion for your money!

Dropped in last week on the way home from work, always loved the look of this place, brings back memories of going to the chippy with my mum when I was a kid, has that 80s look, from the business cards on the wall to the sweetie vending machines. But I love how clean it all looks, and well looked after to. Anyway simple order from me, sausage in batter, saveloy and chips. Well the chips for me were perfect, snappy crunch and fluffy in the middle and not to many in a portion. The best I have had in a long time, top marks. But hey...where’s the sausage!!! Has to be the worlds smallest sausage in batter, the batter was light and crispy but the sausage lacked flavour. Saveloy was done how I like it crispy and not kept in a bath of warm water, but stone cold. So as I say chips heaven the rest not there for me yet, but I’ll be back to try the fish.

The food is fine but the service is terrible. Staff are incapable of dealing with more than 1 customer every 5 minutes.

On 5th October, The Lemon Plaice provided me with 24 perfectly wrapped, correct orders with the name of each person on each order. They definitely went the extra mile with everything and communicated effectively throughout the whole process. To say we were impressed is an understatement. Thankyou all so much xxx

I've seen some of the more negative reviews for this chippy and I think some of them are unfair. This is a chip shop and a quite popular one which often makes it busy. I's not a Michel Roux Michelin star restaurant and they don't have a maitre d' to greet you and say hello at the door. If they are busy, just be patient and they'll get to you. It's worth the wait.If you want a type of fish that they don't have in the hot locker, you can expect to wait about 10 minutes whilst they cook it to order. There is quite a high turnover, so what you see ready is going to be very fresh.The fish has always been of good quality when we've used them and choose you chip portion size carefully. A large portion will feed a small village.They do a pretty good range for a small town chippy, catering for gluten free needs and vegetarian and vegan.Give them a try.

Waited patiently for 10 minutes to be acknowledged by the girl behind the counter, who I could see was busy with orders, (there were 5 other people waiting at the time, who I believe had already ordered). A simple hello and I'll be with you as soon as I can would have been fine. The other staff were equally uninterested in serving so I left without ordering in the end. Very disappointed.

Had takeaway from here and was pleasantly surprised! Food excellent! Staff friendly and reasonably priced! Will call again!!

Called in on our way through Shefford. Both had cod and chips. Chips were fresh and fish was lovely big and chunky. Definitely recommend!

used to be my favourite chippy for miles, I would come out of my way to come here. the chips used to be excellent. now as times gone on, prices have shot up and quality of service has just plummeted. I guess this is across the board for most places, but it is what I wished would never happen. thanks for the many happy years, regardless

Firstly I think its worth noting that if you visited here a few years ago it was run by different people - it was not great then, but under the current owners it fantastic! Special mention goes to the tattooed guy who is superb! He cooks damned fine chips!!!!

A huge portion of fresh chips- enough for 2 to share with sausages which were lovely although the curry sauce was too thick! But definitely worth a return visit.

Ordered two lots of fish and chips with curry sauce and gravy. Sauces were set like jelly and the fish and chips were dry and luke warm. They had obviously been sat there too long. Worst fish and chips I’ve ever had.

We went here on a Saturday night at around 8pm. Food wasn’t freshly made... no idea how long it had been sat there. Genuinely terrible.

We ran in here for a quick dinner after a long work day, and ordered a cod, a haddock, some chips peas and curry sauce (oh and a pickled egg!). We got it home and the only decent thing we got was the egg....Both fish were dry with a terrible batter.. The chips were poor quality and just a bit unpleasant to eat. The curry sauce was gelatinous, and the peas tasteless. We will never come here again.

Called in today 16th May miday ish, had loverly chips & sausage in batter, The lady that served us was very helpful,The Twizzle vinegar was great.

Do love my fish and chips, of all my Local fish and chip shops, this is by far my favourite, great friendly staff that manage to produce some good English fish and chips at very competitive prices. The portions are generous and taste fantastic. Keep up the good work there guys.

Have had good and bad experiences here. Fine if there's no queue but expect longggg queues and little communication from staff who take orders then go ten minutes serving before taking orders again. On last visit they surruptisiously slipped in an awful medium cod with soft batter (tasted gluten free) and miserly size. Chips are always good but can't help but feel this place is run ineffectively.

I think the fish and chips here are pretty good, and it's usually fairly busy. It's a shame whoever manages this place doesn't read Tripadvisor reviews and have a word with the staff about their customer service skills. Last night I stood at the front of the queue for five minutes while the staff milled around without speaking or looking at me. No one minds waiting if there's a good reason, but why not at least acknowledge your customer and explain any delays?

I don’t normally get take outs on a Friday night and I realised why! Everyone has the same idea! But the team at the lemon plaice are efficient, calm and organised at what they do. Food was cooked fresh and was ready in 5. Thanks boys!

Located adjacent to the high street, this little chippy provides a great service with a surprising variety of fishy delights in a selection of sizes. I opted for a medium cod and struck lucky with a delicious fleshy/flaky example of this great British classic. The chips are tasty, cooked to perfection and not too greasy. Staff are cheery even on a chilly and damp Tuesday night! Prices were quite reasonable too, they even provide those little wooden fork things.

The only chip shop in Shefford so you would think they would be good and reasonably priced... Its not

This is our local chip shop, yet we struggle often to buy chips without waiting 25-35 minutes. That's right, 25-30 minutes from a chip shop. you could peel and fry them at home quicker.

I have used this fish and chip shop on a couple of occasions and WILL NEVER USE IT AGAIN. The servers can be quite rude, not happy chatty people and on both occasions the food has been really really below par. The food is also quite expensive for what it is. I drive by the shop and see many people using it, but I certainly won't be going in again in the future.

Not been here for a few years. Passing by and purchased chips and fishcake at 21.30hrsChips were almost uneatable Hard and cold. Obviously reheated. Fish cake was dry and tasteless. I asume new owners as used to be a great chippy. Why do these shops let themselves down for such a small cost saving. I certainly will be avoiding in the future.

We go to The Lemon Plaice most Friday evenings. The portion sizes are fantastic and the food always tastes great. Wear your sunglasses for the yellow paint and have a chuckle at all the signs telling you not to do things. But the food is great.

Been here several times and had to wait longer than expected, even if waiting for fresh chips (which I don't mind) it seems a struggle for them to cope with busy nights. Final straw was tonight when we had some nice fish to make at home and fancied some chip shop chips to go with it. Being a Monday night I thought it would be safe to get some from here without the normal delays only to be told they have sold their last chips almost 30 mins before they are due to close. I had to dash as quick as possible to henlow who luckily have extended their opening hours till 9pm from today! Anyhoo, it's the last time Shefford's chippy will disappoint me!

The only fish and chip shop in Shefford is a disappointment, food is well over priced chips in 3 sizes and even a half portion to maximise profit. Cod in multiple sizes with no real difference between them and burgers sold without buns and charged as an extra. Don't waste your money there are better chippies out there

We have sporadically been to Lemon Plaice and unfortunately our experiences have declined. We have had some good food from there but our most recent visit was 'not the best'.There was a wait on chips, which I don't mind for fresh chips. What we unwrapped at home hardly looked fresh and was pretty dry, we only live within 5 mins of the place.Likewise, the fish was quite dry. On a positive, the curry sauce had improved from our last visit.We do occasionally go back for a chippy tea, but at this rate we won't be in any rush to do so.

I used to visit this shop when I lived in Shefford between 1983 and 1991 and the food was good. Returned for the first time since we moved and walked into an empty shop! Woman was pleasant and she said I would have to wait for the chips to be cooked. Got a large cod and plenty of chips. We went straight back to my friends and the fish was lukewarm. The worst fish and chips I've had for a very long time!! Chips seemed as though they had been lying around for ages but I saw them cooking them so they should have been fresh and crisp.Definitely won't be returning to that shop ever again.

Every time I come here it's packed with people waiting half an hour for chips. Terrible service unfriendly staff and ridiculous waiting times. Tonight I waited 40 minutes for cod and chips. Kebab next time.

I was on a pub crawl and really needed some good greasy food and lemon plaice was just that! Tasted amazing and have been both sober and drunk and its tasty and flavoursome and good price wise so very good for people on a budget. Would highly recommend!!

You need to employ nicer staff! Other than that, an ok fish and chips and reasonably priced. The quality varies on visits.

We use this place quite a lot and it never fails , fish is lovely , chips the best ! We have on a caissons tried an othe establishment but it never lives up to the quality of the lemon plaice !

It is a real shame that this Take Away does not put more effort in to the quality of food it serves and the quality of the staff and management. The food is nothing more than average I can honestly say I have never had a really good piece of fish and never had great chips. I am no expert but it never tastes fresh and often far to greasy but you are paying top prices. The staff are normally kids with little or no social skills and you feel like they are doing you a favour by being there, but this appears to be the same as the owner/manager. Come on guys you have queues out the door on a Thursday and Friday and trust me that is not the quality, price or service you are offering its simply that you have no competition, please re train your staff, review your supply chain to get better produce and start delivering a great end to end experience you owe it to us all in Shefford

Slow service, average quality of food, but chips sometimes very greasy and poorly cooked. Not worth the money

We normally order large haddock and we always have to wait for it to be cooked but It is always well worth the wait. The staff are helpful and very friendly.They have a food hygiene certificate level 5 which I find very reassuring.

Nip to Lemon Plaice every now and again, never had bad food. Never have to wait very long and the staff are pretty good. Personally we do find the chips could be better at times, doesn't stop us popping back though.

Service was quick.Free parking was available straight in front of the shop - it was easy even at a usual busy time of around 6pm on a Friday evening.! In my opinion the price charged (just under £14.00) was fairly high for two portions of fish and chips plus a small carton of curry sauce and a small carton of mushy peas! The fish smelled very strong . Portion wise it was of an average size and served with the skin on! The chip portions were however plentiful but mainly scrappy chips. All in all , it was average and we certainly wouldnt go back!

Stopped off cos apparently this is the best place for fish and chips in Bedfordshire........ Wrong! Asked for 2 portions of gravy got a congealed mess in 2 containers gross!

We usually go to the Codfather in Henlow but decided to try LP, good alternative, will definitely go again. 10 minutes wait for rock, but that's normal, good portions.

Considering this chippie is just around the corner from me, I used to drive to Henlow for fish n chips because the chips used to be greasy. I was also getting fed up with the 'we don't have any small fish only medium', which in my opinion was a way to get more money. Since my mum moved to the area, I have started to give them a go and OMG the queue is out the door-the chips have vastly improved and they are a lot fresher. If you haven't been for a while, give it a go. But beware of the queue (last week it took me an hour before I was served!)

Not much to say about a fish and chips shop. All I can say is that the food is lovely, service is quick and easy and have never had a problem. Great little chippy!

Consistently good fish and chips - we buy from here about once per month. If you phone them up they will cook your fish to order which saves you waiting if you want something other than cod. The portions are generous and the staff are very pleasant and welcoming.PS. TripAdvisor seems to think this is a restaurant. It isn't. It is a chip-shop offering take-out only.

Just had fish and chips for the first time in ages and it did not disappoint. As a traditional chippie the Lemon Plaice does the job. With few airs and graces this establishment focuses on the food. The chips were great. The fish was very good too. Can't say too much for the sausages which are not my favourite here or anywhere. The fish was all it should be and there is now a gluten free option which is fab. All good as far as I'm concerned.

Have lived in the area for 11 years and have to say that this fish shop is consistently average. Staff also consistently lack smiles no matter who works there. I think it might be part of the job speck. With a great kebab shop opposite where you receive a warm welcome from George and the team, I am surprised this shop has survived.Having originally come from further north I have given up finding decent fish and chips anywhere between Watford Gap and south London. Also can't understand why all the fish served within the area has got the bitter tasting skin left on under the batter? If you want it without skin this shop charges extra?

The Lemon Plaice used to be one of our favourite local fish and chip shops but it has unfortunately lost its way over the last year. I asked for three large fish and I was initially told they didn't have any (at 5:30pm on a Saturday), but from somewhere three were found and were cooked fresh, and I sat and waited. We had three large cod and a large portion of chips which normally would suffice. On getting home we found that the fish although long were skinny things, with dark burnt hard batter and I would say half the width we normally get from the van in Maulden (which wasn't there on the day we wanted fish and chips). The chips again were only sufficient for two people when they used to easily stretch to three. So in all a disappointing meal and we will time our fish and chips meals to a Friday when the van at Maulden is present.

Can't really add much to the title. Service was without a smile, please or thank you, the fish was quite dry as the batter was seemingly overcooked, ie very dark rather than golden, and both fish and chips were tepid although we only had half a mile to drive home. A disappointing experience, we won't be going back.

I have been a bit spoiled by having lived in the north and had excellent fish and chips. This one does a fairly average job of the fish and chips with no real surprises. I don't think they use animal fat which may be plus for a lot of people. Prices are about average.

Have got food from here a few times now and each time has been bad. Chips not cooked ( still hard in the middle), fish cooked badly too. But gave it another try this eve as it's our only local fish and chip shop. Only to get home and the cod has gone off!!!! My partner also had a long wait as the staff messed up orders before him and then also disputed with their customers about payment. Which the customer had already made

Perhaps I am simply expecting too much but I have always found Lemon Plaice fish a bit oily and soggy. The chips also lack that crispiness which chips should have. Service seems to be a bit hit and miss too. Admittedly we tend to eat earlier than many so perhaps staff are just gearing up.....

Lovely, they sell all the traditional items you would expect from s good fish and chip shop fishcakes, mushy peas, curry sauce to pies ect the chips are crisp snd very tasty u can tell they are cooked in a decent oil the fish is always cooked to perfection light and fluffy crisp batter never over cooked spot on!!
