We ate here last summer (2023) and had the most wonderful Lamb Kleftiko ever. I've tried to reproduce it at home with limited success, so, I emailed the Legh Arms to check if it was back on the 'specials' menu. Milly kindly informed me it was and I made the booking with Grace for last Thursday. Spectacular does not do this dish justice. I commented as such and Jack, the head chef (and owner I think) came out to discuss how I might get close to his perfection (little hope). The fact Jack was willing to be so helpful is a powerful reminder of the good stuff in life. My wife had the small belly pork bites as a main rather than a starter as she eats far less than me. She and I thought they were incredible as well. Great selection of wines, my Malbec was very good, my wife's Pinot Grigio blush equally so. Guiness Zero to start and a J2O made for a meal well worth the 28 mile journey each way. This restaurant knows how to provide great food at very good prices and in a quiet, relaxing atmosphere with friendly and efficient staff. All boxes ticked. We shall be back again without question. Thank you all.

Where to start with this place… From the moment you walk in, the staff were so welcoming and friendly! The food was absolutely amazing! The service was out of this world! Not one fault could be said about this place, it really is phenomenal! Would recommend anyone to go here! Easily the best service and food we have had! And the drinks were so perfect, pints were refreshing and crisp! The gin and mixer, made perfectly! We honestly can’t thank this place and staff enough, you’ve made our weekend away just that little bit more perfect! So a massive thank you to you all! 11/10 5/5 star reviews! We arrived at 11.30 to an open door ,lights on, but a chair in the doorway blocking it. We asked if we could come in for lunch, we were politely told that they were not open yet. So we left and had lunch somewhere else.It would I think have been nicer if we had been asked in and to have a drink until they were ready to serve. Poor customer service . We have eaten here and it is very good , but If you don't look after your clients, someone else will.

We've dined at The Legh Arms many times before BUT last night was the icing on the [birthday] cake. It was my other halves 60th, a surprise party with 17 guests and all the potential associated problems. From my first contact to book, through follow-up contact regarding menu choices, to seating on the night everything was arranged without fuss or concern. What can I say about the food?! everyone, without exception, was overwhelmed with the quality....presentation, flavours and portions. EVERY member of staff both front of house and behind the bar, were immense.....friendly, attentive and although under pressure, full of humour and personality. Thank you again to The Legh Arms for making a special night, extremely special! All the best......see you again soon, Rob and Lynda

We visited over the Bank Holiday weekend. We'd already walked out of one place due to poor service whilst visiting Southport so were hungry and a bit narky but that changed when we came to The Legh Arms. The moment we walked in, we were welcomed by the wonderful staff who were attentive and friendly throughout our visit. The food was amazing; arrived quickly and was piping hot. Traditional English food which was well cooked. And the best sticky toffee pudding I have ever had.

We called in to have an early dinner at around 4:30 thought it looked a bit quiet and found out why when we went in .. they don’t serve food between certain times and on this occasion weren’t doing so until 5:30, we weren’t in a rush so thought we’d wait. They told us the restaurant was going to be extremely busy so sat us on a small table near the bar . To be fair when we actually ate the food was fantastic and well worth the price. Only gave it 3 stars because when we left around 8.30 the restaurant was very quiet and could have comfortably accommodated us at a more suitable table .. will definitely visit again but will check the serving times first

Great menu described really well and at the right price. We had a ploughman’s and a Caesar salad. They were so delicious with plenty of cheese and home made pate and the Caesar salad had lovely crispy bacon as well as chicken topped with some toasted bread. We really had intended to be good but after such amazing mains we then had desserts. These were not your average desserts but beautifully described and impeccably served. We had sticky toffee sundae with proper whipped cream and good quality ice cream. I really cannot recommend this place enough. I consider myself really picky but this place was superb. Great country pub atmosphere .The new extension is nicely furnished and has improved the experience tremendously. I suspect some negative comments have been made because there was a period of adjustment when the extension was opened and i dont think even the management anticipated how immediateley successful it turned out to be. All four of us had different meals and they arrived at the same time.Call in for a pint of local beer and browse the menu by the open fire. We have dined here a few times and have never been dissapointed .The prawn cocktails are huge and i cant resist the Beer Battered fish which melts in your mouth although the steaks are great as well. The service and manner behind her is disgusting!! We were only allowed to have the bar menu this time and made to feel very unwelcome,as we asked for the dinner menu in the bar area. The manager must have a serious chip on her shoulder, a common problem when you promote someone at a young age into an important job role! Power doesn't work well with her! Very rude! We will definitely not be returning! However the guy behind the bar did seem to want to be accommodating, and thankfully because of him, we did receive the whole menu. Pate starter was excellent as was the other halfs Sirloin & the Chips were home made & very crispy. My Roast Beef was more than adequate, however, it wasn't your typical cut of the more traditional type, more a lump of shin (cheaper cut) & should have been advertised as such but all in all a decent nosebag. 2 glasses of wine, a coffee, shared starter & 2 mains £42.50. First, let me correct Trip Advisor's geographically challenged placing of this delightful food pub in Preston: PR post code and 01772 phone number, yes, but Mere Brow is part of Tarleton parish within West Lancashire, and nearer to Southport than Preston. We dropped in while passing to check out the current menu and were sufficiently impressed to book (as recommended) for Saturday, even lunchtime. The beer from the associated Hop Vine brewery and the house wine were excellent. A change of mind led to us phoning next day to move the booking to the start of the evening food service at 5.30pm: no problem. We arrived a little early to find one foursome already seated and 'reserved' signs on all the tables. We located ours, got starter drinks from the bar – the excellent Mere Blonde for me and a good red wine for Sue. The waitress brought us the menus before the official start of food service and then went to the foursome to tell them 'The chef is happy to take your order now and not wait.' The menu is large and interesting – occasionally eclectic – but I went for the steak and ale pie with garden peas and real chips (not the skinny ones offered with some dishes) while Sue tried the fettucine bolognaise. Service was excellent – after we'd ordered the food, someone came round from the bar to ask if we wanted another drink – we did. We knew portions would be large (steaks and gammon come in at 10oz as would one of the fish dishes) and that also applied to our portions: very full plates. Not just full, but well hot and completely delicious food. Meanwhile, even this early in the evening it was filling up all around us, with family parties and groups with a wide age range. We were able to get the bill without hassle – another good sign – and left well replete with the intention of returning fairly soon – well, with excellent food, great service, good beer and wine, and economically priced, of course we'll be back.

Having been regulars at the owner's other enterprise - the HopVine in Burscough - for the past few months, we had high hopes for the Legh Arms. We weren't disappointed. Everything that is good about the HopVine can be found here plus the benefit of a lovely countryside location. The menu is well balanced, the food excellent and the ale first class. Service was friendly and efficient and the prices very reasonable. Can't wait for our next visit.

We stopped for Sunday lunch while passing. We had a nice meal overall. I had the beef which was a blade of beef more stewed beef than roast beef, the potatoes were deep fried rather than roasted but all tasted good. My wife had a cold and couldn't taste much of her broccoli & Stilton risotto. An ok meal just maybe not for us. The place was very busy with us getting the last table available, a good place for basic home made grub.

While staying overnight in the area we called on spec for a meal.. First of all the smooth flow bitter was absolutely gorgeous, and the prices were brilliant. My husband and I had a short wait at the bar until a table came available. Once seated we both chose steak and ale pie. The pie was delicious with big chunks of tender lean beef and a lovely pastry, this was accompanied with chips, mushy peas and gravy. The only thing to spoil the meal was the chips. I asked the waitress if they were 'proper' chips and she said yes. They were not very nice and tasted of the oil they had been cooked in which wasn't pleasant. This let the meal down.

Visited here for the first time recently and wasn't sure whether I would like the place or the food or not. I was wrong. It is so warm and cosy and the food options vary. Im bad when it comes to food (being fussy) but I really enjoyed the meal I had here. The staff are really lovely too. Recommend this place

As fans, and regulars, of The Hop Vine in Burscough, we thought we'd try Mike and Julie's new venture. It is small and traditional inside and clearly a work in progress, but we received a warm welcome and were shown to our table promptly. Likewise, the menu is also small and traditional, but definitely something for everyone. My teenage son loved the retro 'chicken in a basket' and my steak was cooked perfectly, however, both daughters complained that their fish and chips and chicken goujons tasted slightly greasy as though the oil hadn't been changed recently.I am sure that with a bit of love and attention, the Legh Arms will become a real contender and will be a welcome addition to the local community

Went for a Sunday family meal, be warned best to book as it is only a small venue. As a family we ordered the Sunday roasts, gammon, a children's pasta and I had a starter prawn cocktail with fries. Food was well presented and a all agreed tasted good. The puddings were £4.95 each so we decided not to bother. Within an hour and we were back home, so served quick great for the little one. Note that there is no high chairs for babies/ toddlers. I have a portable one which we attached to a chair.

What a fantastic lunch , my 10year old daughter doesn't usually pick things of the kids menu as most places think children should only eat nuggets but what a fantastic pasta dish she received with garlic bread , a generous portion and she loved it ( so did we )My husband and myself had two starters each instead of a main and they were all delicious and a high standard of attention to detail with interesting ingredients and dips and sauces , it made you excited to look at the food and it all tasted great , friendly, pleasant and attentive staff , we can't wait to go back again , yummy yum yum :)

We called in for lunch and we were offered a table in the back room where the kitchen is situated. I wasn't interested in the chef's personal life, but found it difficult to concentrate on the menu, let alone have a conversation, over the banter emanating from the John Bishop wannabe!! Add to that the eye watering hot fat haze filling the room and strong cooking smells from the open kitchen - so we asked if another table was available in another room? We were given a table in the front bar area by the waitress who told me I wouldn't have noticed the noise from the kitchen if the pub had been busier! I think I would actually. After a shaky start we ordered fish & chips which were delicious - waitress service good. Moral of the tale - avoid a table in the draughty back room and go on a busy day to drown out the noise from the kitchen.

We didn't book and thought we'd chance it on a Friday evening, didn't have high hopes when we arrived and found the car park almost full. However our luck was in and we managed to get the 'kitchen' table, which was fine. It was good to see the food being prepared to order, cooked properly without the pinging of a microwave. The waiting on staff were efficient, attentive and polite, don't think we've ever had a waitress apologise for interrupting to check on how we were finding our meal.We went for the dipping bread for one which was really delicious focaccia and a lovely herby/mint/chilli jam type dip at the bottom of the oil. A nice change to the usual balsamic offerings. We also shared garlic mushrooms which had a good filling. For mains we decided on haddock and chips and scampi. The scampi was lovely and the breadcrumbs crisp. I loved the pea purée that came with this, very tasty, I was so taken with this that it distracted me from the also delicious homemade chunky tartare sauce Everywhere serving scampi should provide this as superior alternative to chasing garden peas around your plate. The fish dish was reported as good but only because of what is a personal preference being that less batter would have made it a very good dish for my fellow diner. The generous portions meant we couldn't manage a dessert unfortunately but what we saw of these leaving the kitchen they did look good.A really pleasant experience and would recommend to others based on our first impressions and experience of this place.

We have been here a couple of times and the last time before Xmas was not good at all. My wife found some form of tissue paper in the potatoes and when I brought it to the attention of the landlady she was quite rude. Will not be going back and would not recommend.

I feel a little mean in scoring the Legh Arms as 'Average', but I do so in the context of the full range of eating establishments. Amongst village pubs it might reasonably warrant 'Very Good' - the staff were faultless, the drinks were good (including local beer), there was a wide range of food from 3 menus (one Christmas) reasonably priced, the food we chose was all good and enjoyed by the family (but the volume a little overwhelming at lunchtime). So it delivered 'what it says on the...' pub sign; I will be happy to go there again.

This is mine and my partners go to place when we just can't be bothered cooking and washing up, usually on a Sunday afternoon. We probably come here once every few weeks and it's consistently great. Good quality food, well cooked and the service cannot be faulted. I have also attended in larger groups of friends and family. Child friendly and reasonable in price. If you go on a Sunday and the roast dinner is beef you HAVE to have it. It's a very close second to grandma's roast dinners!!! Booking essential as a very popular place. Not a bad word to say

I booked during the day Friday and found they were completely full for a 19.30 table.Rather than lose the booking the lady asked me if I minded a table by the kitchen which I accepted gladly. We had a starter and a main course each and garlic bread and neither of us could manage a desert! We both have good appetites! The food was excellent and should not be confused with 'pub grub'.It was so refreshing to not be offered 'hand crafted chips' nonsense or skinny fries. The chips were superb! All washed down with large glasses of Malbec. The experience was enhanced by attentive, effective and pleasant staff and I was amazed that no one in the kitchen looked over 35!I highly recommend the Legh Arms for quality and value and I will be back!
