After shopping at Sainsbury's Rayleigh Weir, we like to pop in for brekkie. Good selection to choose from. Always quick service albeit without being pressurised. Polite and helpful staff. Always worth the little detour on the way home.

This was our second visit to the laughing pear. Firstly we were seated side on to the counter and after our drinks order was taken they handed them to us over the counter rather than bringing them to our table. The second was the bill. I had a full English breakfast and my daughter the pancake breakfast which came with syrup. When the food was served my daughter asked for more syrup as there was not enough, a small jug (approx 30mls) for 3 very large pancakes. An additional syrup was brought. There was no mention this would be at an extra charge. When the bill came the additional syrup was charged at £2.50. Which I feel is too much for a condiment that was for a breakfast including it, it brought the pancakes meal to £16.49. However, had I been prewarned the cost of the syrup I would have at least been given the option to either go without or pay the cost. For this reason I will not be returning, I understand additional syrup may not be free, however a small charge would be more than enough to cover the cost, but at £2.50 it goes far beyond being reasonable. for perspective a 700ml bottle in Tesco is £2.40. I'd even understand it if had been requested for food not being served with syrup but in my opinion it is the same for charging for extra ketchup, or extra milk.

Visited with my work colleague, her first time. I have been before but a long time ago. Parking onsite, just be careful of the lorries coming in & out of the yard, they aren’t exactly careful of people crossing into the restaurant & come at some speed. We had to wait for a table, always a good sign! Sat down, table with a little sticky, it had been cleaned though, was obviously from the cleaning fluid. Staff extremely polite & attentive. My colleague had a burger & I had a chicken wrap, both very nice. My main criticism is the noise, when it’s busy/full it’s impossible to hear people, my colleague & I struggled to have a decent conversation. It was a relief to get outside & to be honest gave me a bit of a headache, if nice sit outside so you aren’t battling with hearing people. I don’t remember this issue before so it must be when it’s particularly busy/full.

On our second visit we were pleasantly surprised that the soup was wonderful. When we visited a year ago, the soup was far to spicy which is why we didn't return for a year.

The Smugglers is a great old traditional Pub in Hullbridge. Truly a hidden gem near the River. Beer prices are reasonable & Max the Bar Manager is epic works like 3 people behind the bar 🍻. Great venue with live music played most weekends.
