We had a really lovely post-lockdown meal here and it did not disappoint! The starters (lamb scrumpet and pea bruschetta) were a fantastic way to start the meal and our mains were delicious. The sea bass skin was perfectly crisp and the accompaniments went with it perfectly. Although the steak looked small it was more than enough and full of flavour. The house red wine was affordable and delicious. The staff were attentive and friendly and made it a really enjoyable evening.

Mid-week after work before a 7:30pm show at The Royal Centre (10 minutes' walk away). I went mackerel starter and then monkfish main course, both of which were excellent; my wife (vegetarian) enjoyed her substantial bowl of Gnudi (a little bit like gnocchi) which she'd never encountered before. Neither of us could pass up the excellent-sounding chocolate dessert, which was delightfully rich. We left full but not stuffed so just right. Friendly and efficient service. Room a tiny bit cold, particularly sat by the massive windows - the radiators were not on. Sad to see we were the only people dining - they deserve to be much busier. Sensible prices for the high quality of the cooking.

After a good film we wanted a suitably decent meal. We hadn't booked, it was a Saturday night but The Larder squeezed us in. Superb starters pigeon breast / crispy egg with barley. My fish main of sand sole was also excellent, my partners veggie option was a bit bland and not quite up there. Still, a delicious meal with a good bottle of wine. Will certainly return and stick with the meat and fish options.

The chef at The Larder on Goosegate has a light hand converting rich, succulent dishes into delicate, but savory melt-in-your mouth delights. On a Tuesday night in early September, I wandered down Goosegate looking for the restaurant. Went up a couple of steps and saw a posted menu for August. Climbed the stairs. On the first landing there were two closed doors. I was beginning to think the restaurant had closed, but I opened one to find a pleasant, informal dining room with windows overlooking Goosegate. There was an a la carte menu and a set price menu with fewer choices. I opted for the latter: three courses for 19.95 UK. The first course was battered baby squid with a mayonnaise sauce. The squid were succulent, with a delightful spiced crisp light coating. No sauce was required. I told the waiter that the sauce was a detriment to the delicate dish; she agreed, but said customers had demanded a sauce. The main course was an exquisitely thoughtful combination of rich dishes contrasted with bitter roasted raddichio and a mild beetroot sauce that tasted good with everything. The Blythburgh pork belly was perfection: a crisp crust with unctuous meat and fat that melted in your mouth. The accompanying Dauphinoise potatoes were magically both luxuriously rich, yet light. The best plate I've eaten in years. For the dessert, the blackberry cheesecake was again surprisingly light, yet flavorful with its fresh blackberries on top. Heaven.Service was delightful. I got to chat with the waiter, as surprisingly there were few customers that night. The view out onto Goosegate was a diversion while savoring my meal.My only caveat about The Larder on Goosegate is its inaccessibility due to the required flight of stairs.

Went for dinner in large pre-booked group of 16. Place looked a bit tired. It was a Friday night but we were the only people in apart from one other couple. Food was very average. Cured salmon starter was bland and my "flat iron" steak (not sure what cut that is) was very gristly and I had to leave a third of it . Very disappointed.

We've been to The Larder may times and it was our first choice to celebrate our daughter's graduation but for once it was a disappointment. Gone was the inventive menu with different and delicious combinations. Instead boring plates included the same old bartered squid which you find everywhere, no skill involved just straight from freezer to fryer. There are nice seats overlooking the street from the first floor. It has quite lovely chandeliers and a nice atmosphere. From the moment we walked in the place had a special feel about it. We had walked through the town full of Saturday night stag and hen do's which are continuously drawn to Nottingham. Rain was in the air but had so far held off. The Larder isn't really a place you would stumble across as it occupies the first floor of the 'old Boots building' above Pizza express, which is a tip in itself for finding it as most of the Saturday revellers would probably settle for a Pizza before or after their pubbing and clubbing... You climb a few steps to reach the restaurant and immediately leave behind all the hustle and bustle from the streets outside. The décor befits the building and the shabbiness of the wood panelling and architecture works very well indeed to promote the laid back atmosphere. We visited on the 8th September 2018 and the staff on duty were very welcoming and professional. I wouldn't say the food was out of the ordinary but it was very good, in particular the side dishes. The prices were reasonable and I do take the point that has been mentioned by others the white wine could have been better chilled. None the less we that's Kate a vegetarian and I a meat eater would really recommend this very different place from I would guess the norm of Nottingham for a very satisfying evening out...

This was my third visit here, this time in a party of seven to celebrate a special occasion for me. You expect fine dining and that's what you get. Everybody was delighted with their courses, the wine list was extensive and the prices were fair. The venue is, of course, the original Boots shop and is now decorated charmingly for its current purposes, including the use of feature chandeliers giving an extra sense of magic and grandeur to your experience. The staff were universally friendly and helpful. So anything other than a very solid five stars would be unfair and we'll definitely be back. I do have a some minor quibbles though. I booked the table eight weeks before on line and with plenty of notice requested that our table was one of those alongside the feature window that runs the length of the room. Even nearer the time I was given to understand that that was possible. But on the night, when we arrived, it had clearly not been provided and they hadn't forgotten because, on being greeted, that was the first thing the staff mentioned. Frankly, with that much notice I can't see how that should have happened. Secondly there was, comparatively, just about enough choice for vegetarians. Incidentally, the whole restaurant is on the first floor, which (as far as I could see) you could only enter and leave by using two flights of very steep stairs. You also need to watch for the not unusual practice of adding 10% service charge automatically and then leaving a space for a further gratuity. Having said all that, though, based on the food and the overall experience on the night, a really good evening and we'll be back.

went here with my wife the other day and was a little disappointed. For starters I had the lamb Scrumpet which lacked flavour and seemed a little overcooked, with the garnish (which was presumably supposed to be tartare or mint sauce) just tasting like a good quality mayonnaise with thin slices of ginger over the top (which were actually really nice and did bring the plate back a little). For the main I went for the Hanger steak cooked rare to medium rare. For some reason the chef saw it appropriate to serve the steak cut up into bite-size pieces. I understand that the chef did this to make sure it was cut correctly against the grain before I ate it, however, I would have preferred to do it myself as to not lose flavour to whatever he/she cut it on. The chips were just pub style chips. The lettuce dressing was delicious, however. My wife had the the beetroot and goatscheese to start which she really enjoyed, and was presented beautifully. for mains she had the seabass with white beans and chorizo. The seabass was cooked perfectly and she said the meal was really good, but didn't blow her away. The wine we ordered was fantastic and the waitress was great which is always important.Overall we had a lovely evening but were a little disappointed with the meal (mainly mine) as we've been wanting to come here for a long time now. Myself and my wife visited this evening with high expectations which were met, to a degree.Starters were fantastic, autumn squash and goats cheese was a real hit with my wife and the cod brandade was great, served with buck wheat crackers and various pickles, my wife’s main of rare hanger streak was also very well cooked, however my main of pigs cheeks was massively let down by the accompanying sauce which was a VERY over reduced red wine sauce, which left a bitter/sticky taste in my mouth for the rest of the evening! I professionally understand the process of the reduction of stocks to create jus, however this sauce had gone past the point of no return! Whilst the rest of the food was good the chef must realise that these school boy errors must be ironed out to help provide a perfect dining experience for the guests.

I had lunch here with a group of ladies. It wasn't busy, but there were some other people there. The food was lovely. We ate from the set menu which was reasonably priced although not extensive. The venison and haggis croquettes were delicious and the sea bass nicely cooked and tasty. My companions all praised their choices highly. However, the service was pretty poor. A side order of chips never materialised despite being asked for twice and one of the drinks we ordered only came after the second time of asking. The staff didn't stay in the room, they kept disappearing into what I assumed was the kitchen which made it very difficult to attract anyone's attention. Our meal took two and a half hours which was far too long for lunch. Fortunately, we weren't in a hurry so it didn't really matter, but they weren't to know that. I will go back because the food was good, but it will be with a smaller party next time.

Hart's is our normal choice but it was fully-booked so we decided to try out The Larder on Goosegate, based on the Michelin guide recommendation. The restaurant itself is very nice, with plenty of space between tables and a relaxed ambiance. The pre-dinner bread and butter was excellent, but we were only provided with one piece per person, and weren't offered any more when this was finished, which is unusual for this kind of restaurant. For starters we had ham hock terrine, which was also excellent but let down but the accompanying corn relish, which wasn't zingy enough for the ham and there wasn't enough of it. I've since seen some online pictures of the starter with mustard provided in addition to the relish, and this would have completed the dish well. For mains we had steaks, which were flavoursome and perfectly cooked, and the pepper and brandy sauce was one of the best I've had. However, the fries were a big disappointment, being too large and almost completely lacking in flavour. I'd normally expect the kitchen in restaurant such as this to salt the fries, but this wasn't done, and the simple granulated salt provided on the tables isn't really suitable for anything. Smaller, most crispy fries, properly seasoned by the kitchen, would have resulted in a perfect steak main course. We finished off with a cheesboard, which could have done with some butter to offset the dryness of the biscuits that were provided, and some muscat, which was excellent.Service throughout could have been better. Plates were not cleared quickly between courses, and we had to ask a number of times for things that the server could easily have anticipated.Overall, the food was good, but with some simple refinements in the kitchen and in the restaurant the experience could have been much better. I'd considering going back again if some improvements were made.

It's a lovely room in a historic building. The service is great. There is a really good selection of drinks. The menu always looks interesting, but I've been several times now and I feel a bit unsatisfied with the food - good ingredients, well cooked, but I don't think it's quite as good as World Service or Hart's.

Visited here with friends for my birthday. The food was delicious and I would really really recommend the lamb rump which was tender and very tasty. The chocolate cheesecake pudding was also delicious. Staff were friendly and helpful. Wine was delicious. The building has a blue plaque as it was the site of the very first Boots Chemist shop - lots of original features on show in the restaurant too. A little pricey - our bill for 3 people came to £140 but that was for almost 3 courses, a bottle of wine and 3 pre dinner drinks so. I would recommend to anyone planning a night in the amazing lace quarter and looking for a really nice meal in a smart (but not scarily smart) place.

With our eldest daughter graduating from the University of Nottingham on 21st July, I had wanted to book somewhere special for a late lunch to accommodate a family group of six people after the graduation ceremony. Having seen the restaurant recommended in the Michelin Guide, I decided to book and was so glad I did so, such was the positivity of the whole experience. Early email communication was swift and friendly and gave me confidence that things would be good ahead of the visit. The restaurant itself is unique - we all loved its airiness and lightness and were appreciative of being placed on a table by the window. We had ordered a delicious Rose champagne in advance to be served as we arrived and this was handled extremely well by one of our very professional and efficient waitresses - she was also very accommodating with taking the compulsory group photo! The food was absolutely glorious with something on the menu for everyone - not always an easy ask when you have a mixed age group present. My eldest daughter and I both had the hangar steak which we agreed was one of the best steaks we'd ever eaten and the triple cooked chips dipped in the brandy and peppercorn sauce were sublime - in fact, I'm salivating writing this review. Our friend's sea trout was also another stand out dish - but it was all so lovely and we had a great 'bin end' Spanish white to accompany meal - most unusual grape combination but it worked brilliantly with all our choices. Thank you very much to the team at The Larder for playing a key part in helping to make our day both special and memorable. We will be back next year for our youngest daughter's graduation day, hopefully!

A group of us visited for afternoon tea a short while ago and enjoyed ourselves. The sandwiches and cakes were all very good and tasty and the choice of Teas was excellent too. My ONLY comment would be that as a group we would have enjoyed a few more sandwiches and a few less cakes! Maybe middle age spread had something to do with it?

My wife and I eat out regularly. Whilst sitting at our table the waitress referred to us as "walk in's" I asked for a table next to the window but was told they were reserved for high tea's despite being empty. Starters were fine, Mains, loin of pork 2" thick grisly, needed a chain saw to cut. Apple sauce floating in the gravy. Mustard mash, minus the mustard, the mash indescribable. So not to make a fuss in front of customers for high tea, I let the staff know it was the worst meal I'd had in my life. I got my wife's coat and was told "you must have picked a bad day" no apology offered nothing..

The Larder has to be one of my favourite places to eat in Nottingham. Independent and not part of a chain it is as a restaurant should be. Welcoming, not too big that it feels overwhelming and rhe staff are lovely. The service is efficient, professional and friendly . The food never ceases to amaze, the scallops were heaven and the lamb cooked to perfection. It would always be my go to place to eat, be it a special occasion or a cosy meal with friends it never disappoints. Well worth a visit....you will not be disappointed.

Had a meal on Saturday night for hubby's birthday on recommendation by a friend. The ambience and setting are wonderful, cannot find fault in any way. We ordered starters and steak. The starters were both good however the steak at £20 a pop each were not the best. Both tasted as they were cooked on a griddle that had not been cleaned. Although cooked correctly extremely charred on the outside. We both work in the food industry so are aware of the importance of keeping the griddle cleaned. Hubby was given a small desert with a candle, not ordered or paid for which was very thoughtful and a really nice touch. Just a shame our main meal was under rated. I realise from all of the reviews on here we are in the minority, for a special occasion we did however expect more. Such a shame....

We were the only customers there at this time so not much of an atmosphere but nevertheless we enjoyed ourselves and would like to have lunch or dinner there.

Was very looking forward to it for Valentines, especially with its Micheline rated reputation. Set meal was ~ £40 pp, even though on a normal day the courses would have been less than that so we expected more on that night. Firstly, we rang earlier that day to confirm the time of booking, they were unable to confirm the time then and there as they werent sure which table we had (?) even though we provided the name and roughly what time we thought it was at.. Secondly, we also requested for a window table when paying for £10 pp deposit in advanced during Janaury, but were seated in a secluded corner when arrived. The waitress however moved us to a window table after a second request. Food was average, however presentation on my main was all over the time. Clearly the sauce was spilled out of place and was presented nonetheless. No one came to ask whether if food or everything was okay.. Not even water from the jug was poured out for us considering its reputation.Speed of food however was fast and main course was lovely. Overall, quite disappointed with the whole meal experience as we expected a lot more from the price and its reputation, and considering it was a special occasion.

Went with a friend to celebrate her birthday Saturday lunchtime. We were the first to be seated at 1pm and it was a little cold but the waitress assured us the heating was coming on - it did take a while to warm up but it is an old building so that's not really the staffs fault Tea was served in a large pot which was refreshed while we eat. Afternoon tea was a three tier stand with long rectangles of white breaded sandwiches without crusts (I believe they included cheese and pickle, egg mayo, duck and ham terrine and a cheese I think), salted caramel tart, orange sponge, ginger cookie and choc brownie plus two mini scones each with cream and jam The sweets (except the tart)were small eg size of 50p piece with the cookie n tarts about the size of a fist but very rich and tasty It's a pretty venue and the toilets were very refined with lovely scented candles and hand towels Worth a visit and we enjoyed a good chat for several hours there - I've had nicer bigger cakes though but it is good value considering the history

I wanted to take my girlfriend for a romantic anniversary dinner which matched my love for her and found that Larder seamlessly combines sophisticated food with a relaxed atmosphere. My pork scrumpet came out with a tangy chilli pineapple punch and soft boiled quails eggs. My partner chose the Salmon which as I remembered it was a tasty, clean and simple plate of food as one could eat. For main I chose the rump of lamb that was served with kale and broccoli and potato crisp. It came medium rare and worthy of the restaurants one star status. My partner chose the hanker steak and was left marvelling the unique cut of meat alongside the amazing brandy sauce. Complemented with a Tuscan red the main courses really set the meal alight. A big fan of apple pie my dearest was in food heaven and really enjoying her first Michelin star experience. I opted for the Christmas Panna Cotta that managed to condense a number of Christmas flavours into a small pot. Starved of Michelin restaurants in Sheffield Larder is a real treat for us and a great way to spend our first anniversary together - if the Champagne is free maybe we shall return for another 3 courses of food heaven.

Not been to the Larder for a few years, but always remembered it was a great place to eat. Group of 6. Christmas night out with friends. Busy restaurant but service was quick - although some of the staff were a little abrupt. Food was a little mixed in quality. Quails eggs with Pork scrimped were hard boiled, but otherwise the starters were nice. Main courses were generally tasty - steaks were lovely. Potatoes were underdone, parsnips underdone and horseradish with blade of beef was too mild - could not taste at all. Desserts - again, very nice. Two of ordered a cheese board to share. Biggest disappointment! Small board with 4 oatcakes , no butter and 6 tiny slices of rather tired looking cheese. So, all in all nice food, decent wine, lovely decor .... but overpriced. Maybe we just happened to catch them on a bad night.

Fantastic food, excellent steak, attention to detail was second to none. True 'old school' hospitality, (coat taken, umbrella stored in umbrella stand, water provided on the table), it was mentioned on booking two months previously that it was a birthday meal and I was presented with a desert complete with candle and chocolate-piped birthday message without charge or prompting. Thoroughly enjoyable evening. Thank you.

It is some time since I went here and clearly that has been my loss. Despite it being Saturday night with a large party present, the service was timely and friendly. Indeed we easily made our next engagement (concert) despite the complexity and careful/elegant presentation of the dishes, which were nicely judged as to portion size. The fried cod (no batter in sight) starter was a wonderful example - not overwhelming but very satisfying and beautifully presented. The blade of beef was similarly well-thought out; again it was nicely presented and beautifully cooked, as was the sea bass. Even the not-too-large room is elegant and tasteful. My mistake - will go back sooner rather than later.
