An authentic Lil cafe/restaurant that sells the old stick to your ribs food. Loads of war memorabilia decorates the place and 40s music transports you to an era long gone. Great food, staff and ambience and would thoroughly recommend. I don't think you can book but it does get busy at times. Free parking round the corner at the leisure centre and nearby Aldi and Co-Op.

This page should be taken off. The larder was a 40's style cafe and people travelled because it was quirky. Now it's just another cafe on long street atherstone. Really dissappointed .

This is now called the Atherstone cafe, unbeknown to us, which we only found out upon turning up at what we thought would be the larder, when you google the larder whilst it’s says new ownership and says it is open it doesn’t advise of name change, also the telephone number is now invalid. We now know why!!!We chose the larder as the reviews said the gluten free breakfast was excellent. We were meeting our daughter halfway between Leicester and Solihull and drove 35 mins to get there. The tables are small and crammed together.A lovely young girl served us but it was a bit off putting seeing the splodges of food all over her white top. She then informed us no they no longer do gluten free breakfasts and the chef wasn’t really happy to do me anything due to the allergy. I then asked could they not do me some scrambled eggs in the microwave I had bought my own bread just in case, as you would not believe how many places offer gluten free yet don’t even keep one loaf in the freezer!.So after tooing and frowing it was agreed yes they would do me some eggs.My husband and daughter and her husband all ordered a big breakfast. It was slop!!! Hard bacon cheap sausage tinned tomatoes{could they not have offered me those as well} white bread barely toasted. I’m am not at all surprised they want to get people there thinking it’s the larder.. my advice forget it don’t go... I’m not sure they really want to keep their customers!!!!

Oh wow, the food was amazing. Defiantly cant wait to come back here. The only gripe is, the lovely gesture of given a free biscuit with tea / coffee - would be better if they added a touch of home made, rather than shop bought, but its free, so... all in all, highly recommend, it was the best breakfast ever with lovely staff.

After visiting this quaint place several times before, and enjoying both the atmosphere and the food, it made sense to call in again today when I was in the area with my daughter. What was meant to be the ideal opportunity to catch up with her whilst having a bite to eat and a cup of coffee, turned into an absolute nightmare. The young girl who eventually waited on our table was sort of 'pleasant', but was clearly very new to the role, took our order, only to return to tell us that everything we'd ordered was unavailable! During our wait for this news several members of what appeared to be a band turned up, taking up most of the room. Several guitars and a violin were taken out and the 'tune up' began. We were expected to rethink and order something new from the menu during the noise! Whilst waiting again, the noise continued. The young girl then returned to ask us what we'd ordered!! The proposed 'catch up' with my daughter was impossible; we couldn't hear each other, never mind anything else. The food didn't even make up for the atmosphere. It was bland, Luke warm and children's sized portions. We decided at this point to leave, without hardly touching our food order. Although I'd have been quite within my rights to refuse to pay, especially given the circumstances, I decided to go and pay the bill. The hospitality at the till was as bland as the food. I received no apology for our experience, if anything, I was clearly made to feel as though it was our fault. In conclusion: We will not be returning to this establishment again, and I wholeheartedly recommend that nobody else should go either, you will be highly disappointed if you do. This is clearly new management trying to run off the previous proprietors very good reputation - VERY WRONG!!

To the previous reviewer. I find it hard to believe what you are saying. I visit regularly and always have the captains breakfast and if you visited as regularly as you say you would know that it contains fish. The new decor may not be to everyone's taste but the food is always hot and good and the staff are very friendly and go out of their way to accommodate. It has been well over a month since it changed ownership so if you are a regular customer as you so why has it taken you so long to notice. It is always busy when we visit and I have heard other customers say nothing but good comments not only about the food but also about the changes most people saying that it looks alot cleaner, brighter and more welcoming and I certainly think so. Would advise anyone to try this place I will certainly be returning.

I have been visiting this establishment once a week since it first opened. On the whole the experience has been good to excellentUNFORTUNATELY THAT ALL CHANGED THIS WEEK.Having learnt that the Larder had recently changed hands I was keen to see what had changed. My experience was as follows:In the original larder the experience was that of visiting a 1940s cafe with good wholesome food prepared from scratch, potions of a generous size. Cakes were all home cooked. Beverages were of an excellent quality and in keeping with the period.Whilst waiting for your food it was pleasant to relax and take in the ambience of a much slower quieter pace of life. Whether, reading the individual table guest books, original newspapers of the day or looking at the fascinating plethora of original memorabilia from the 1940s the nostalgia was magnificent. I've lost count of how many times I met with younger people expanding their knowledge whilst enjoying the Larder's hospitality. So many of the older customers noticed and relived every detail, even the wash room facilities offered coal tar soap which bought back many memories. Visiting the larder was a treat for the senses.UPON ENTERING TODAY I was greeted with modern gaudy plastic floor tiles, Ikea style tables not a tablecloth in sight. The majority of the original memorabilia has been replaced with white plastic picture frames housing some photos, reproduction commercial signs such as those that can be found in Pound shops. A few hats and cameras were the only original items I saw. The nice 1940s menu books have been replaced with one laminated card. I did notice prices had increased. The waitress was pleasant enough although she certainly rationed her words. She initially told me that the breakfast menus haven’t been changed at all so I opted for a captain’s breakfast with smoked salmon. She responded we have taken all fish off the menu.As it was nearly lunch time I ordered the pie and mash. My first 2 choices of pie were not available. With a third choice ordered I sat back and waited. The meal arrived quickly and it was barely edible as it was cold. The substantial shortcrust pies have been replaced with small flaky pastry pies, garden peas replaced with over cooked mushy peas and the mashed potato was somewhat watery with lumps. A jug of gravy accompanied the meal and it definitely was the highlight of the meal as the gravy was at least hot.The staff needs to review their food preparation skills and ensure food is cooked properly before somebody falls illAs it appeared that china cups and saucers had been replaced by mugs I requested a cold drink, expecting a glass – which I didn’t get. I settled for a coke as they no longer offer Fentiman’s bottled beverages. The multi pack coke in its can arrived, at least it was cold. The cakes on offer was actually one cake and it was shop made not home made, so I passed on the pudding. My colleague who accompanied me was so disappointed and concerned to see under-cooked cold food that he just had a coke and said he would eat elsewhere.Nobody came to check if things were OK but we were made to feel unwelcome after 20 minutes. When paying I was shocked that the girl at the counter saw fit to make very disparaging remarks about the previous owners and staff and their standards, especially as I believe she was one of the original staff.Needless to say we were glad to get out of the establishment and find somewhere else to eat as we were really hungry. It seems obvious to me that the new owners are trading off the name of the original Larder and its original owner, the food and drinks are of a far inferior quality, as indeed is the current standard of customer service and operation. Instead of experiencing a 1940s cafe and its hospitality today I experienced the new larder, a cheap themed greasy spoonIn conclusion:Menu – limitedPortion size – very smallCost - averageQuality of fayre – poorAmbience – sterile, with decor poorly finished & rushed. Memorabilia tacky and cheap reproductionsStaff – offer the bare minimumCleanliness – below averageSpeed – Food arrived quickly, but staff rushed us from the moment we entered.

Went there today before I travelled back to North Devon, I have been hear a few times when the other owners ran it and the food was always up to scratch. We ordered breakfast for me my wife and my son the room was very cold inside and we had to wait a bit for the breakfast to arrive. Well when I looked at mine the sausages were not even cooked and was still liked they had just come out of the package onto the plate. The sausages were uneatable so I left them after advice from my wife and son. The present owners need to look at there food preparation and ensure food is cooked properly before somebody falls ill.

I used to use the larder a lot under old management. The visit was always a unique experience and I wanted to share it with my fiancée as he had never been. When we walked in I realised something was amiss all the wonderful memorabilia was missing and the quaint interior was replaced by what can only described as a cheap ikea replacement. We ordered two breakfasts and it was inedible! Eggs were covered in burnt black bits and the bacon was so hard and burnt I couldn’t cut it! The beans were so congealed they were a lump of tasteless mush! We left most of it and left the place!! The place was dirty and there was a dinner knife on the floor which the waitress walked over twice before another customer picked it up! On returning home both myself and my parter have been unwell!! It’s such a shame as this cafe was always buzzing with a lovely friendly atmosphere now it’s a dirty greasy spoon I have had better breakfasts in a truck stop!! Won’t be returning! Save yourself a journey and don’t bother!

This is a fantastic place to eat. Don't be fooled in thinking it is a place where only a certain age go for their breakfast or lunch. It is a place you can go to no matter what your age. They serve the everyday jacket potatoes and sandwiches but it's not what people flock for. Try one of their locally produced sausages with mash peas or beans. A home made pie with mash or even a spam fritter. Perhaps washed down with dandelion and burdock or a camp coffee. You won't regret giving it a try and experiencing the 1940's in vision, sound and taste.

This is an oasis of simple enjoyment and good food in a modern world of profit and sophistication . The ginger beer is all I need to follow up and I seldom manage a pud!

Can't comment on the food as we didn't eat. Nice, quiet, friendly village pub. Undergoing renovations.

Favourite second hand bookstore, affordable coffee and food in the cafe and gluten and dairy free options too! I am here as regularly as I possibly can to be amongst the history of it all. Every time I see something new!

Nice vibe, clean, tidy, good service. Food pretty good. £25 for a quite nice chicken ceasar salad and chips in is punchy in my view but...hey ..everything is subjective. That's life I guess! Give it a whirl and see what you think.
