PHONE AHEAD TO CHECK IT’S ACTUALLY OPEN! We checked the website and Google maps before setting off on a walk to this pub. When we arrived the boards outside indicated it should be open but the doors were shut. We went round to the back to find 3 equally bemused groups of people. The pub was shut despite all information available saying it was open… more than a little disappointing after a long walk to get there!

We had a one night stay here, what an amazing experience!!! I can not recommend this place enough! The drive up to the pub we were amazed at the views, we actually sat in our car for a few minutes to just take it all in! We had a lovely warm welcome from the hosts, our room was basic but lovely everything we needed and with again amazing views, it was so peaceful. We unfortunately missed having dinner here as we went for a long walk but we were allowed to order food to the garden and we had drinks and even had a few shots, although we were in a pub on a Saturday night we were expecting to hear people, but we didn't hear anything from our room and we had our window open all night! Great night sleep! Went down for breakfast and it was amazing!! Food was fresh and of good quality. We spoke to the owner for a good while and he told us the history of the pub and surrounding areas and where to go for a good hike which was fantastic as we did no research of the area before we arrived. Went back to the pub for the afternoon and had a Sunday lunch again amazing fresh and good quality, sat and spoke with Mark (the owner) and he treated us like we were friends! We had an amazing time! I highly recommend 👌

This pub and its owner Mark along with the resit of the staff are so friendly and welcoming. The food is absolutely gorgeous I’ve don’t think I’ve ever seen or eaten such a huge & tasty Greek salad, I couldn’t finish it and trust me I tried. You can see that the new landlord is putting his heart and soul into his pub and it’s so lovely to see such passion, the charity fundraising evening was enjoyed by all, a singer, supper, and a fun casino fund raising evening. A throughly enjoyable way to spend a Friday night. I’ll be sure to pay another visit if I’m ever that way again.

Thought we would try the Lantern Pike in Little Hayfield for an evening meal, as it is under new ownership. The place doesn't seem sure whether they want to be a restaurant or a pub, as music was playing too loudly for a restaurant. We were presented with plastic menus, which never looks great. Ordered a beef curry and gluten free roast dinners. The waiting on staff said the gravy wasn't gluten free, but returned to say that it was. The curry was average at best and cooked in a microwave, with gloopy rice which had been reheated. The roast was cold, with pre cooked beef. The mashed potato was very unappetising. The food was on a par with a motorway service station. The evening was ruined by a foul mouthed woman at the bar effing and blinding for a good 15 minutes and telling everyone how fat and ugly she was. Nothing was done. The young waiters and waitresses were trying their best, but the owners need to take more control and improve the standards of what should be a lovely country pub. Very disappointing.

The people who run the place are a delight but the bedrooms are less shiny! The bed was ancient with loose springs and the shower ran either scalding or freezing so impossible to use. The floor in the bathroom was spongy and holey under the Lino so felt insecure and the tv was smaller than a laptop screen! Good job we didn’t really want to watch much. The food was good, well cooked and a decent menu. Not too much vegetarian to choose from unfortunately. There were a lot of locals using the pub for food. Reasonable prices. Breakfast was ok.

Tried this pub whilst staying in the area. The food available was all on a specials board in the bar. I had Pork loin (which turned out to be a pork chop) with decidedly 'unusual' tasting veg and fatty chips. My husband had a gammon steak (which was billed as a thick cut gammon but didn't appear to be so!). The mains were over £10 each so whilst not expecting fine dining we did expect them to be slightly better. We did not try dessert as we had been disappointed by the mains. The pub itself is cosy inside but is right next to a busy road so not very relaxing. Could not recommend and would not visit again.

My wife and I have been so impressed with previous lunchtime visits to the Lantern Pike that we chose it for hosting a family lunch on Bank Holiday Monday 4 May 2015. There were seven of us including two children (7 and 5) and one vegetarian. We were not disappointed. As always mine hosts and their staff were warmly welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Service was excellent and as ever all dishes were cooked to perfection including the good section of fresh vegetables. The menu is varied and includes good Sunday roasts. The pub is always warm (real fires) and cosy. This is a local pub with a local atmosphere so expect some friendly banter at the small bar and chat between tables. The Timothy Taylor Landlord Bitter is a well kept fine brew. Besides the two small rooms in the bar area where we enjoy eating, there is another room for busy periods and a very pleasant elevated tiered garden at the back of the pub. The children with were very well catered for.

I've passed by this place literally hundreds of times and never really felt inclined to stop since parking isn't massively convenient by the looks of it, and externally, it gives the appearance of being a bit uninspired. In the end, it was a visit of convenience, that I had undertaken with no great expectations.

Found by accident as we were coming up to lunch time on our tour of the Peak District and felt like a break for lunch! Parking for a few cars, the actual pub itself a little dated but cosy enough and friendly bar man. The sandwiches however were a disappointment, they were expensive, I had a ham sandwich and thought for the money it would at least be on nice crusty bread and thickly siliced (both bread and ham) which sadly was not the case, shop sliced bread and think slice of ham served with a few limp lettuce leaves! I am sure if we had tried some of the fish from the menu it would have been better value but we only wanted a snack. Expensive and not great sandwiches but the rest of the menu looked OK.

We ended up here because it was a Monday evening and we had our dog with us. The menu was limited so I ordered the beef lasagna. When it arrived, I could see it looked odd- the top layer was literally

The attempt and excellent service is evident, politeness, attention, friendlies, yes that was fine. I can only glean that on the day the chef and bartender, were struggling with a new computer system

A lovely cafe in the centre of Castleton. Was able to sit inside with my two dogs, and enjoyed scampi and chips. Good amount of scampi (couldn’t finish it all), and a lovely side salad and homemade co
