The Lansdowne Arms in Wiltshire

Stayed here for work, and found it to be really good. Huge bedroom and bathroom, great shower with plentiful hot water. Super comfy bed too. It’s a lovely old building with lots of stairs but so much character and charm. Good value

Great food, friendly staff who made you feel very welcome. We all had the Sunday roast which was delicious. Definitely will return

Highly recommend the Lansdowne Pub! The pub is at the most beautiful location, food was excellent, this was the best steaks we have ever had! Chef Mohan is extremely talented and the service from all the staff Sidney, Hemant and Ella was first class! So welcoming and friendly, the attention to detail was next level with the food and the service. We will definitely be back soon!

Decided to stop in after a walk. Five of us, with a young child and dog so they didn't get much warning (any). I think there must be new management in here since we last came a few years back. The roast belly of pork was 10/10 exceptional along with everything on the plate. I often cook this dish myself and couldn't beat it. Very impressed. One of the group had roasted topside of beef. I am always wary of ordering that out because it's often overdone and dry. The portion was VERY generous and perfectly cooked and my friend really enjoyed it. The decor is a little tired but you can put that back on the brewery as they never seem to look after their properties very well. For a place to eat great food at reasonable prices I would definitely recommend and go back.

Under new ownership, this pub was recommended by our hosts as we are staying on holiday nearby. The staff were welcoming, attentive and friendly. The atmosphere was pleasant and there was ample choice of different places to sit - we opted for a sheltered spot in the sunny garden. We had the chicken burger and steak wrap, both of which exceeded expectations- the meat in both was delicious. A decent portion of chips came along with both dishes. Thank you for a lovely lunch, we will be back in future.

First meal here since the new tenants took over recently. We had family down and the 6 of us all really enjoyed our meals. Great service and really good food, we are really excited about the future for our local pub. Keep up the good work.

Phoned on saturday to ask when food was served on Sunday and if we needed to book, was told food all day but only roast and no need to book. We turned up at 3ish told only roast left was chicken and 2 other options obviously been given wrong info the day before. Really friendly and and attentive staff apologise we ordered food which was mostly fab. Fish and chips amazing apparently, our roast chicken was delicious with lovely gravy, gave us a portion of cauliflower cheese free due to the mix up which was lovely, roast potatoes not good and kale with a Sunday roast!. All in all we will go again due to the great hospitality and next time go earlier on a Sunday to ensure we get the roast we wanted.

This is a beautiful place to eat, the food was delicious and both myself and my dog was made to feel very welcome. Lovely staff, great atmosphere.would highly recommend.

Beautiful pub. Great location. The woman and man behind the bar where as miserable as sin. Sat playing word search at the end of the bar. People waiting to be served.

Was ignored. There were two men at a table, unsure if they were staff or customers, also a bar person who was in and out also ignored us. This was October 2022. Considering there was no other customers to take care.of, pretty appalling

Terrible service ignored on arrival members of staff at the bar or really doesnt cost anything to SMILE have been here several times with same reactions left standing at the bar for 10 minutes waiting to be served left with no option but to leave. One member of staff even seen us waiting at the bar walked past us and went behind to talk with the other. Members of staff. Found experience highly rude

Rudely ignorant staff. Anyone in hospitality knows that even if you are busy you still acknowledge customers when they enter your establishment. You certainly don't completely blank them and ignore them as they stand at the bar waiting to be served.

Arrived to be advised they couldn’t serve food (it was a Sunday lunchtime) as the chef had quit the day before! Also didn’t have the wine we wanted! Not the first time we’ve had a pretty poor experience here but desperate to give it a chance as it could be so good, but 3/3 not great experiences makes you wonder. Such a shame as in such a fantastic location you’d expect much more.

I booked a table for the family and arrived at 12.30, to a fairly empty restaurant. It took an hour for an order to be taken and starters to arrive. After a further half hour the main courses hadn’t arrived. We had to chase them twice to then receive an apology with a glib statement that there was only one chef preparing food for a full restaurant. If you don’t have the staff you should highlight the wait at the beginning and turn away walk -ins. We declined to order sweets as having spent 2 hours and 15 minutes already, at the table we needed to get home. The failings were accepted by the manager giving us 15% discount, which was thoroughly inadequate compensation for such poor service. Our waiter was dressed in a hoody.

Sorry to say this was a disappointing experience. There are two main problems at this hotel. One is upkeep of the property. Access to the room us via some uneven stone steps rendered more hazardous by poor lighting and overgrown foliage. Up some unkempt stairs, I found the room to be both badly maintained and dirty. One of the beds was broken. Cobwebs hung from every corner. The bathroom I would class as hazardous with grimy appliances, rotting black mould on the floor, walls and windows, an over-bath shower with no safety handles, no non slip mat for guests to use and no safety valve on the shower flow itself. Health and safety measures are lacking. The second issue is poorly trained staff, whose interaction with guests can at best be described as avoidant. Three staff members standing close to the check-in desk failed to acknowledge us at all until we directly requested a check in. I appreciate they might be waiting staff, not receptionists but some basic customer service skills are badly needed. On both mornings, guests resorted to hunting down the invisible and uncommunicative staff, to provide basic items like plates and cutlery at the self-service buffet. I'm pleased to say that when found, the duty manager was courteous and sympathetic. There being no alternative rooms available, she arranged a refund in the light of our comments. However, the room remained uncleaned for the rest of our stay. The Lansdowne is the only hotel in Calne and it seems to take its customers for granted as a result. I visit this area often but I'm unlikely to return to this hotel if things don't drastically change.

Fantastic pub. Gorgeous old building with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Staff were friendly and polite. We had a ham, egg & chips and a steak sandwich and both were wonderful. Quality ingredients and cooked to perfection - we'll definitely be returning!

We hadn’t eaten at this local pub for some time but decided to bring our visiting friends here for dinner last night. We had three Fish and Chips which were in a delicious light batter and an excellent Beef & Ale pie which our friend said was one of the best he’d had. Great service too from Jamie & Hannah. We came here for an anniversary meal, which was AMAZING! We started with some really delicious and fruitful drinks which were Surprisingly cheap. We had the baked Camembert to start with which we could eat over and over again, it was well presented and delicious. The mains consisted of a steak and ale pie for my partner and a steak for myself. The meat in the pie was tender and fell apart the mash was creamy and fluffy and gravy was beautiful. The steak I had was the best stake I have ever had. It was perfectly cooked the chips were crispy yet fluffy and sauce was amazing. The service was fantastic. Our server I think his name was Joshua was brilliant, he was funny, easy to talk to and brought a brilliant attitude to the table. He couldn’t do enough for us. Will 10000% coming back in the coming months for a birthday meal and we can’t wait.

Such a lovely location and pub however vibe is ruined due to old decor, unclean tables and walls. Menu has variety, but very clearly out the microwave. Burger bun was frozen, chips were over cooked and hard, steak was tasteless and wine glasses full of lipstick. Kitchen staff were in and out in very inappropriate clothing including baseball caps and hoodies and joggers. Unprofessional throughout. Only thing that was nice was one meal took off the bill and wine glass changed for a less dirty wine glass (but still dirty).

Was going to book a meal at this pub, as it looks lovely but it says cashless on their website. I'm really getting sick of this and because of this, I decided not to book. Legal tender is just that you shouldn't refuse it and it's your loss

Mixed experience. Dined there two consecutive evenings. First evening service was excellent, friendly, efficient and food delicious. Second evening was a let down. Different waitress who was slow, inattentive and stressed. Felt unwelcome there. Starter was completely inedible. One of the worst ever. It took ages for the waitress to come over to remove it and she didn’t even question why nothing had been eaten! I told her it was inedible and she didn’t even acknowledge it let alone try to put it right! The main arrived - fish and chips - it was ok. I asked for no mushy peas - perhaps a salad garnish instead would have been a nice thing to do instead of leaving plate bare without any green? Seems an obvious thing to do so that was disappointing. No check to see if I was happy with the meal. No thank you or goodbye. Such a different experience to the evening before and it comes down to the staff. An important factor at restaurants and often totally overlooked by management sadly.

Not a good experience! We were a large group so I was asked to order in advance, but despite this the order was incorrect. The salad served with one of the meals was clearly well out of date and very limp. After bringing this to their attention rather that the whole plate being taken away, the bad salad was left and just a fresh bowl of salad bought out, so eating the meal was not enjoyable and even the newer salad was not the freshest. Service was certainly not the greatest we constantly had to prompt and even then had to remind them that we hadn’t been served, despite many staff just standing around chatting. Desert wasn’t much better as we were advised that they had run out of Vanilla ice cream, even though they knew we were coming in weeks beforehand, as a result the adults we offered alternative flavours but the children’s desserts were just served with chocolate ice cream. It’s actually a myth that all children like chocolate flavoured things! When I finally got the bill (asked for it three times then had to go to the bar to ask again) there had been no deduction for the errors and omissions and when the ‘manager’ did deal with it she was certainly less than apologetic. I think all of the staff there could do with some customer service lessons. Needless to say I didn’t leave a tip as most disappointed all round, especially as it was meant to be a birthday celebration. We will certainly not be going back.

We had lunch here again on a beautiful sunny day. We ate inside , the staff were very helpful, relaxed atmosphere, good choice of pub lunches, including of course fish and chips. The beer was good, I am told. A very pleasant lunchtime spot, also accessible by public transport, important these days. Good value for money

Finding a parking space took a few trips around the block. We stood at the check-in desk (left hand side of the bar) for 5 minutes before somebody came to see us. During this time various bar staff came and went but never acknowledged us. One male staff member spent a good two minutes chatting to a waitress but in that time never made eye contact with us. I know they do not do the checking-in but a "somebody will be with you soon" would have been appreciated. The room was large and quite smart. Massive walk in shower (no bath). The room was so big the TV appeared smaller than my phone screen. The highlight of the stay was the evening food. Both meals were very good. Continental breakfast was also good. Would happily stop here again if needed to.

Just been charged £14.50 for 2 half lager shandy’s and 2 bags of crisps. Questioned if we had been charged for 2 pints by mistake but told no, £5.85 per half a pint will not be visiting again. RIP off

Staff need training in hospitality. Not sure if this has changed hands or new staff that have not been trained. This is such a beautiful pub in a stunning location however our last visit was not good. No welcome from the two girls in the bar who seemed surprised they had customers. Wednesday 24th May. We ordered lunch and that wasn't great, the sausages were barely cooked. I am sure this is a one off as I hate doing a bad review however for Trip Advisor to work I feel it is important to honestly share my thoughts.

I’m all for a reduced menu if it will prevent food waste. However, the lunch menu we had recently was very disappointing. It came down to fish and chips. Burger and chips. Ham, egg and chips. Or quinoa. As it was a celebratory lunch we were not happy. We decided on the ham which turned out to be very fatty. I told the person serving that I wasn’t happy and was told “I’ll pass it on.” As someone that has worked in customer service I would have perhaps given a free desert or reduced the bill. The website gave more options so I wonder why it was different? What a shame as we now won’t book for the next meal.

Recently booked a table for a family Xmas lunch. Next to us was a table of 6 lads all drinking beer. No food was served to them during the 2 hours we were there. Doubt they were from the same household or bubble. Drinks are served with food and you must leave when you've finished eating. Staff made no attempt to stop their drinking. No one enjoys the Government health rules on Covid. Shame the Lansdowne put other patrons at risk.

Highly recommend the: Chicken liver Parfait. Squid. Chicken Breast. Pork Belly. Steak. Steak & Ale Pie. And the list goes on! Great food, great people, friendly staff. This is why we’ve made it our local! Come and give it a try!

I don't drink much alcohol but I do enjoy the taste of beer. Happy to say that this pub had alcohol free wine, beer and gin.Fabulous to know.I had a alcohol free ghost ship from adnams. It was lovely. Thanks folks for thinking of the customers who prefer alcohol free.Lunch was good as well as they offered a small plate. Fish and chips which was just enough for me.

We had supper on Friday evening, staying locally. Never having been before, we had no preconceptions, but had noted that recent TripAdvisor reviews varied in tone from the ecstatic to the hatchet-job...So, what did we think? Very friendly, efficient and helpful service, quickly bringing out tomato ketchup, extra glass of red to have with a steak, etc etc). Beer selection (featuring Wadworths, of course) and wine was good. The menu offered a reasonable choice (not always the case in pubs under covid-19), and the three different starters and mains (including a vegetarian) were all good. If the only criticism I can think of is that the steak knife wasn’t quite sharp enough, everything else was clearly fine.We’d certainly come back if visiting the area again.
