Gorgeous setting, sadly very mediocre food. Service lovely, great friendly waiters but the food is just not up to the mark. Expensive, small portions, they reckon they have hotel restaurant of the year in the central belt but on our experience I wouldn’t hold much to that accolade!

We have stayed at the Lake of Mentieth hotel multiple times in the past and have always loved it so my husband decided to book there for my birthday dinner. The setting is still wonderful and I ordered a chicken curry. When it arrived I was so disappointed. The chicken was virtually inedible. There was no white meat and the chicken that was there was full of fat and gristle. I left virtually all my meal and we will not be back which is such a shame with the great location and how the food and service used to be. We would definitely not recommend

The setting is absolutely wonderful with full view of the lake and wildlife from the restaurant. We had an upgrade to a large, comfortable bedroom with a good sized ensuite. The manager helped us to settle in on arrival, and was quick to respond to our questions etc. However, almost all of the staff were very slow and quite abrupt and not particularly helpful. Sorry, but true. We enjoyed the peace and quiet and local walks.

I went to this restaurant with a group of 5 friends. The waiter informed us that they had a large group at one table and that we may have to wait awhile. This was a gross understatement. We had already polished off the first bottle of wine and ordered a second before the food arrived about an hour and a half after we ordered it. The management should either hire more staff or book fewer covers if they cannot cope better than this.

I popped in for the fisherman’s breakfast, there are a few variations, I opted for the full Scottish which was bacon, eggs, sausage, black pudding, potato scone, mushroom, tomato and beans with a side of toast and a pot of tea, the service was quick and friendly and the food was delicious and all for a very reasonable £10.50, perfect to set yourself up before a day on the lake.

stayed here with friends, oct 17th to 21st nice rooms and comfortable. the restaurant is very good, serving great food at reasonable prices. we had continental breakfasts which were top notch and there was a good full Scottish breakfast also available. the bar was superb with a very good selection of single malt whiskys to choose from, some old and rare and pricey. the staff are really friendly and they couldn't do enough for us. we plan to return next year after the refurbishment. good luck for the future , "Everyone"

Family out for Sunday lunch, one requiring a gluten free meal. We were assured that the grouse on the specials menu was gluten free, so two of us ordered this and we ordered two portions of seasonal veg as extras. The grouse came with a jug of thick white blob, which we were later advised was bread sauce, not mentioned on the menu and clearly not gluten free. The vegetables had thick strands of noodles mixed through them (none of us had ordered noodles). When I complained to the waiter, he took my bowl to ask the chef, before returning with the same bowl saying that the chef said not to worry as they were just stray rice noodles! The waiter was clearly being left to take any flak, so I followed him to the till, to find the manager and chef in the bar. The manager basically said that it was a small kitchen, so you have to expect some cross-contamination (2-inch bits of noodle?!), while the chef brushed it off as just a "schoolboy error". (If I'd wanted my lunch cooked by a schoolboy...) Neither the manager nor the chef appeared to grasp the seriousness of serving contaminated food, with the manager repeatedly assuring me that the ingredients were gluten free. Restaurant owners must understand that to label a dish as "gluten free", or any allergen free or even NGCI (no gluten-containing ingredients), they are not just saying that they did not intend to include the allergen, but that they had taken measures to prevent contamination by the allergen. Clearly, serving a jug full of the allergen (as happened here) is dangerous, but so is having such poor kitchen practices that different meals on the menu get mixed together. Our meal was cut short, as we could not trust any of the dishes to be gluten free; in fact we could not trust any of the dishes to be just what the menu said they were.

Been here and reviewed before. Hoped it would be better this time as the setting is so nice we wanted to give it another try. The hotel is very nice, well decorated and modern, however some of the food was not up to the expected standard at all. I had beef stroganoff - what arrived was an oily stew. Cheap cut of meat which had a lot of fat & gristle, slicks of oil on the plate, no sign of cream in the sauce. When I pointed this out to the waitress she said she'd talk to the manager and see if she could get me a discount. I'd only eaten half of it and wasn't going to eat any more so I told her I wouldn't be paying for it. Sadly the manager didn't deem it important enough to come and see me and no apology was received from anyone. When we went to pay we were just told the stroganoff had been taken off the bill. On top of that, for starter I had scallops with pancetta. The 'pancetta' was actually streaky bacon - a thickish slice with no effort to crisp the fat. Not like any pancetta I've had before. I would have let that go as I know these are hard times for the hospitality industry but the stroganoff was a step too far.

We were thoroughly disappointed with our meal here today. While the spot was beautiful - spectacular views over the water - every single dish our party of 7 had from starter to main was poor. For a start it took nearly two hours to get our mains despite it not being busy (and no staff apologised or offered an explanation). Our drinks order was forgotten. And the food was really not good - very salty, undercooked (veg and chips), some of the portions were tiny, meat dry etc. Despite the huge delay for food and all the problems with it we weren’t even offered an apology or small % off the bill. I can’t comment on the accommodation and would return for the location if just for drinks but would not advise eating here.

Room 9 was a good size and very comfortable, especially the bed. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a delicious meal at night, served by lovely staff, with everything tasting very fresh. The haddock just melted in your mouth. Breakfast was equally good and again nice to get a freshly cooked breakfast which was piping hot. The breakfast staff were very attentive too and made sure you had more coffee/tea/ toast if required . We will certainly be back as it is such a peaceful and relaxing place. There was a good variety of food from vegetarian to fish to meat dishes and all were well cooked and well presented. Food prices were reasonable. The wine list had a reasonable range though not especially inspiring and I thought that the more expensive bottles were a little overpriced. Service was friendly and as efficient as could be expected on a busy Saturday though they tried to charge us for 5 bottles of wine rather than the 3 that we drank. We went to The Lake Hotel for a special meal with a friend. Everything was good up until the main course, when one of our meals was overcooked and inedible. Pheasant cooked so long that you couldn't get a knife through it. It was like leather, and the small amount of vegetables were completely and utterly dried up. We waited so long for the replacement that we decided to cancel it, as the others had finished eating. The waiter, who we later found out was one of the managers, was incredibly rude and said there was nothing wrong with my meal, which was extremely upsetting and he ruined our whole evening with his horrible attitude and rudeness (see other people comments who have encountered this man). He unbelievably brought out from the kitchen what he said were the pheasant breasts I had been given, and of course they looked nothing like the overcooked dried up morsals I had been given. And he continued to argue that we were lying about the food. The other manager was very understanding. It is unbelievable to be treated and upset in this manner. There is a serious problem with this manager, and the kitchen. I see there are others who have had similar experiences.

Decided to go for a family meal to The Lake of Menteith Hotel as it was such a lovely day. When we arrived everything was fine and we ordered fish and chips, soup and three burgers. The first meal arrived, which was one of the burgers 10 minutes before any other meal came out. The fish followed, and then the soup. Finally another five or so minutes later the other burger came out, however the third did not and we had to ask again for it as it had been forgotten about. When we started eating the burgers they were stone cold, and the soup was also not hot enough. The only meal which was ok was the fish. We sent the burgers back to be heated, as well as the soup. The soup was returned with less in the bowl but finally at a good temperature. However the burgers had to be made again. When the new burgers were finally brought out to us they were warm at best. Yet again, only two burgers arrived and the third one had been forgotten about again (twice), so had to wait even longer for that to be made. Finally the third burger came out with some half hearted apologies from staff. Each staff member that we spoke to made excuses and blamed other staff members and said: "oh you can't get the staff these days" as well as "I tried to tell the kitchen staff but they didn't listen to me" and "the burgers were sent to the wrong table and then sent back, so the chef had a meltdown". I have never encountered such a lack of professionalism! We then asked to speak to a manager due to the complete incompetence. When the manager came over he was quite rude, saying something like "I hear you wanted to speak to me?" with quite an unfriendly attitude. As we explained the situation he was not apologetic and again further blamed others, rather than taking responsibility for a terrible experience. He then asked "well what do you want me to do about it" again in an extremely rude tone, rather than offering compensation which would have made things slightly better. We had to ask for desserts or coffee on the house for the unbelievable service. After this we did get some desserts and coffee for free which is good, and after this conversation the manager changed his tune and started to act in a friendly and accommodating manner (finally). Overall I am not one to complain when things have gone slightly wrong and are not up to standard and I understand things can't always run smoothly. However I have never experienced such a lack of service, professionalism and heat in my food. All of which I would fully expect anywhere I eat, never mind somewhere which charges £16 per burger and £14 for soup. I recommend that the beautiful setting of this hotel is absolutely not worth you wasting your money. Definitely avoid!

The hotel is situated right at the edge of the lake and on a strangely warm October day it was lovely to sit outside.

I ate here approximately a year ago and I have to say that the food was ok. Visiting again this month, I had heard that there had been improvements in the standard of food. In all honesty, I have to say that food was average at best. The menu would have you believe that you are in for a treat with a fecund description of the potential delights you are about to receive! The description of the food in no way lives up to the presentation and taste. I would have to question the quality of the ingredients. As I said in my last review, I really want this place to be good. As a local, there are very few decent eating establishments in this part of Stirlingshire. Without doubt one of the best settings in Scotland with open, panoramic views of the only fresh water lake in the country. It’s a real pity the food does not match its beautiful surroundings. Very disappointing. I’ll not be back until I hear that it’s improved - this may be a gamble of course!!

The beautiful location almost excuses the disappointment of the food. We dined here on Friday night and were excited when we saw the menu. Each dish had an incredible ingredients description which left us all sitting on the edge of our seat in anticipation. The food most definitely didn’t meet the expectations of the description or the cost. A perfect description could be “fur coat and nae knickers”! Where else to eat out in the evening around Aberfoyle and Gartmore?

We visited the hotel in October. Rooms are lovely. The hotel sits in a beautiful location. I have to say the food for me was awful. The vegetables were absolutely raw I couldn't cut through them! Someone else in our party ordered the venison burger and it was served burnt on the outside and dry on the inside also he couldn't cut through it. Having said that the other 2 members in our party ordered the fish and thoroughly enjoyed it. Breakfast in the morning was lovely. The other thing I did not like was that at half nine they closed of the bar.

Our expierence at this restaurant was perfect. The staff were friendly, the location and looking out over the lake was splendid and the food was fantastic. During our time traveling around Scotland, this was one of the best meals we expierenced.

We dined at the hotel with American friends while we were staying at Cardross House just up the road. For a hotel that is relatively out of the way, it was very busy. The menu is extensive and enticing, the prices reasonable and the service friendly. The almost perfect title alludes to a wrong order being delivered to the table which disrupted things for a little while, but these things happen and it was sorted out relatively swiftly. The views across the lake are stunning and the hotel is located in an attractive setting on the edge of the Trossachs.

Started of very well with pleasant staff and a stunning views. However, I had to exchange half of my cutlery as it had congealed food left on it - now not going so well. Over all the food was very good and the staff efficient despite it being very busy on that occasion.

I felt compelled to review the restaurant separately from the hotel, as the food here really is a class apart! We had two evening meals and three breakfasts in the beautiful conservatory dining room, which overlooks the lake. On two of the mornings we even saw an osprey hunting over the lake!

We were fortunate to get a window table overlooking the Lake of Montieth. Perhaps the best view in the Trossachs. Good menu choice. Amazing food. Attentive service. Really helpful and friendly manager. Well worth the £32 return taxi fare to get there and back from Callender. Really special place.

Without doubt, the crowning advantage of this fine hotel is the view across the Lake of Menteith. Its peaceful setting lends itself to a relaxed lunch, apart from the overall experience for a night's stay

Sunday dinner with friends. Very attentive and chatty staff, appealing menu and lovely food. The view is really good from the dining area but you can’t eat that. The food matches it all though.

Stayed with my wife for two nights last week. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Great hotel, great location and views. All the staff were superb and a credit to their employers. I will review the food separately.(excellent). The room was good, (some of the slightly more expensive rooms with lake views are lovely). A great retreat in a great setting.

Sydney neighbour recommended this restaurant before our trip to Scotland. Best of the best we have experienced so far. Pork dish was excellent and the black pudding was a delight. Will thank my neighbour when we get home.

After traveling the Uk for a month this hotel stood out by a mile as the very best. The service was great from check in to check out. The food in the restaurant was first class. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and the view overlooking the lake was breathtaking . First class. Loved it.

The scenery is the big attraction for dining here with beautiful views from west-facing dining room (and bar area) to watch the sunset and wildfowl and we were fortunate to see an Osprey dive and catch a fish during our cocktails.

We couldn't have a meal here as our dog was not allowed in even though there is an extensive dining area outside. The atmosphere and response when we asked was also cold and uninviting. 0 stars from me.

We sat in the window overlooking the lake eating very good fish and chips for lunch. We were so mesmerised by the ferry going backwards and forwards to Inchmahome that we walked round to it after lunch. A very friendly restaurant with quick service. We always enjoy our visits here.

It was lovely to sit in the restaurant looking out on the Lake during the heatwave. The most exciting thing was watching an untethered boat drift off on its own and then be rescued some time later! The food was excellent - lamb with a lovely combination of flavours and a light lemon tart with cooling raspberry sorbet.

After remortgaging the house we decided to get some lunch at the Snack Stop. We had lots of money in the bank and decided to use as much as possible. Suffice to say we weren’t let down. Upshot is if you want a ridiculously expensive lunch on paper plates and cardboard cutlery then this is the place for you. £6.50 for a box of 6 sad looking nuggets , £9.99 for a baked potato with 2 fillings. Keep driving past so your kids will get some Christmas presents this year.
