We stopped here for dinner & didn’t know what to expect, we walked in to a lovely stylish pub, lovely atmosphere & super friendly, professional staff. The menu was excellent, offering a wide range of dishes to suit every taste. The food was amazing! Fresh ingredients cooked by a chef, delicious flavours, not thrown together and not processed food. I highly recommend this lovely place & we will definitely be back as have just moved to the area. I want to specifically mention how wonderful all the staff were, a really high calibre, professional & super friendly, they work really hard to give an exceptional customer experience. I felt very sad that they had to deal with a very unpleasant customer whilst we were there, so I hope they know that what they are doing is outstanding, really valued & appreciated, so well done!

The restaurant has a really cozy atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff. The food was even more delicious than I remembered. I ordered a steak and my friend roast, which is a pretty decent size. We went there yesterday and even thought the place was busy, our waiter made sure we had everything we needed. I highly recommend it!

Last night I had the worst experience at The Knife and Cleaver that I have ever had… I booked the marquee/a table in September for my Husbands birthday. I submitted a pre-order for 28 of us on 15th October (10 days before) and asked for food to be served at 4.15PM and also shared feedback from previous meals/events… the pre-order was a joke as I was given a menu that changed between booking and the meal so everyone had to go back through and re select their choices! Nevertheless 10 days before, the pre-order was submitted. Yesterday morning, I updated the preorder (took 3 meals off) as we had a couple of drop outs due to illness and once again, reconfirmed we’d like food served at 4.15PM. It was a suprise meal, so when family started to arrive there wasn’t even enough tables set up and they had to rush around getting cutlery laid! They brought out kids starters at 4.30PM (which were wrong and had to be sent back) - there were CHILLIS on the Chicken Wings. The fact that they offer Chicken Wings as a kids starter with bones in is a joke in itself and shows their complete lack of competence or consideration for their customers. At about 5.15PM the waitresses brought in some plates for sharing platters, they were freezing cold. At 5.30PM and after chasing numerous times food started to arrive! Out of 26 meals… 5 whole meals were missing and their £43 sharing platters which most had ordered arrived with NO veg, 4 roasties between 2 and meat that was inedible!! They had not amended the 3 drops outs from that morning and 20 of the meals had issues e.g. missing yorkies, no gravy etc., yes 20. The kids meals arrived with the wrong sides (do you know why? Because their menu isn’t even a reflection of what they offer? It’s the same menu across their restaurants… they don’t have veg sticks!). 4/5 meals arrived after 6.15PM! 2 of them having to be sent back twice because they weren’t as per the order and in the end neither me or my 6 year old Son ate as they couldn’t get it right and it took too long! I have never been so humiliated in my life in front of my family and friends but more than anything frustrated as I should have known it would be an absolute car crash! I spoke to various Manager and what infuriates me more than anything is that there is no accountability at all. No apology, nothing. They told me ‘they can’t serve 26 meals at once’ (so why take a booking of that size) and that I never asked for food to be served at 4.15PM... despite asking twice. They showed me a print out of the order that didn’t even print properly and was cut off so how an earth were they going to get it right?! The Manager (of the restaurant) when spoken too said it’s nothing to do with her she didn’t get in until 4PM and she wasn’t The Manager on duty today. How do you get a pre order that looks like this so wrong? I try and try to give that place a second chance as it’s local and it’s convenient but they do not give a s##t about the local community or even paying customers!!

Arrived at 430pm, they had a party on which is ok...fine. Was told a wait time of 25 minutes for food...fine. Over 90 minutes later and still no food. Was told on a couple of occasions "yours is being cooked now". Obviously it wasn't. Waiter offered 50% off bill which we accepted but it was never really about the money and the whole delayed experience took a shine off the whole meal. When the food did arrive, it was pretty poor to say the least. Roast meats were poor, frozen roast potatoes clearly, dishes not as described. I had the fish and chips which was ok but not much more than that. I get they were busy but if you can't cater for a table then don't accept the booking. Won't be coming back in a hurry. Really disappointing.

We were very disappointed that the meals served were not as described on the menu. I ordered stuffed belly-pork with crackling, apple and onion gravy, colcannon with seasonal green vegetables. What arrived was a piece of unstuffed belly-pork with no crackling just flabby skin. This was topped with a slab of tasteless stuffing with a spoonful of apple sauce on top. There was no colcannon just several small piped mounds of runny mashed potato. The gravy contained no onions or apple. My wife's meal was due to be served with colcannon but came with the same blobs of mashed potato. The staff were sympathetic and the manager subtracted the cost of our first drinks off the bill.

They really are missing a trick! I visited the pub twice last week, once with a friend and second time with family, both days were very sunny, the pub inside and out was very quiet and there seemed to be at least 2 members of FOH staff working. On our first visit myself and my friend made our way indoors to order as there was no menu on the tables or signage to explain if it was table service or order at the bar. We went to the bar area and as we were inside we just ordered there, a club baguette and a fish finger sarnie (baguette so maybe shouldnt call it a sarnie). We then made our way back out side but struggled to find somewhere to sit as the garden area has ridiculous plastic/faux leather seat and table toppers plus they are situated under the wrong king of coverage that attracts heat rather than shelters it. We ended up in the top corner which is covered with perspex and seats around 8 people (there was 2 of us). Out food arrive pretty quickly and the sever was very pleasant (blond hair) she asked if we canted sauce then went to retrieve it, my club baguette was very odd as it had avocado and crispy onions on rather than Lettuce and tomato. I said to the girl and she just laughed it off and said our shef is baulgarian or polish or something and walked away. I was left stunned but didn't take it any further, took of the bits it didn't want and eat my baguette and drank my beer. I thought £42 for 2 baguettes and 2 beers was a bit of an expensive lunch. The next day we had been out walking with family who are local and we stopped of withfor a drink and a light bite to eat. There was 6 adults and 4 children. Asmy family had been the week previous they were aware of the children eat for £1 per eating adult. We made out decisions on what we wanted and when the server came she then advised us we could not get this offer from the lunch time menu (although they did the week before) we needed a little more time to decide what to do as it was lunch time we didn't want to eat off the Al a carte menu. We decided just to get a couple of share items for the adults and get an adults plain cheese burger and one kids meal to make use of the deal but just to share both of these between the 4 children. I made sure the server (young, black hair) knew it was a plain cheese burger and I even asked if it came with side salad which she confirmed so I asked if there could be no dressing on it. It took a really long time for the small amount of food to come out and by this time the kids were really unsettled, there was only one other table so really un acceptable. Straight away I noticed that the burger was chicken and there was no salad it was coleslaw. The sever was adamant we ordered the chicken royal as that's what she written down, I assured her this was not the case as I asked for cheese only and salad? She proceeded to say it was us to us what to do as the kids were unsettled it would take some more time to get the new one and the chef decided that burgers now come with coleslaw. The chicken looked like it was dry and coated in something so we asked her what the casting was but she didn't know and didn't offer to find out so we said no we want the cheese burger as we ordered so she proceeded to organise this. The server did bring out an undressed side salad and whe the burger arrived it was missing the cheese? She just brought some separate as we were loosing the will by this point. The inside of the bar is very nice? The elmemis soap and hand cream in the ladies toilets is a nice touch but the toilets have a extremely bad damp smell in them. The establishment is missing a trick! You could do so much and have the place bustling as it's the only place in Haughton conquest to eat or drink out. This might be the reason why it's not closed downby now as everytime we have been in there has been problems plus my family also constantly have issues discussing them with management seems to be on death ears. A real shame. Maybe someone will but the closed pub down the road and show them.how to run a village pub with success- a real shame

This is a nice pub to drink in and if you live in tge village no driving involved , as for food it really is a hit and miss situation. One day you can have a good meal another its rubbish. Maybe thats the turn over of chefs who knows! And the prices are expensive for what you get, i suppose being the only pub, they can charge that. They need to rethink some traditional foods. They have just had the garden decked but as for welcoming garden ,im not sure, the tarpolin canopy is a heat trap, they would do better with a wind back or tilted canopy so you can have a choice or even just umberallas to put up or down to your own comfort. But with the cabopy and all the umberellas up touching each other its all covered.they have just put in three tvs in the garden, maybe for the euros but waste of money, they could have used this to improve the facilities etc. Staff are frienly but again high turnover, you just get to know them and they are gone. Shame This pub could do so much more.

We have visited this pub/restaurant on numerous occasions now. Mostly for a beer and to play uno. We ate once prior and it was really nice, I think we had wings and lasagne, it was very good. Most recently we planned a special get together. I proposed to my girlfriend during the day nearby and organised a surprise late lunch here. All the food was really good. We had the items from lunch menu. The lady who took us to the table was so welcoming and gave us a gift, I guess she recalled my e-mail from when I booked a table. The waitress was professional and friendly, down to earth. Overall a lovely experience. Highly recommend. I think we'll pop inlater today, and we'll bring uno.

The food was very nice, though quite pricey. Nice decor, but I got more of a wine bar vibe than that of a restaurant or pub. The staff were all efficient, but lacked the warmth and approachability of many comparable restaurants in the area. They were not particularly welcoming, were all dressed differently, and our waiter seemed in a hurry. There was no hummus, even though it was on the menu, and we had to ask twice for the dessert menu. The apple crumble sundae was not available, and the plum sundae I was offered instead was nothing special. We left feeling it was an okay experience but that, for the same price or less, we could name half a dozen local restaurants where we would have had a much more convivial experience. For this reason, we won't be rushing back.

The evening Menu was very good, but unlikely to have been cooked fresh. Items were not available from the Menu. Wine list was reasonable, though overpriced. We stayed in the adjacent accommodation and my 1st impression of the efficient CHECK IN rapidly diminished when I realised I had been overcharged by £21.90! for my one night stay. The accommodation was very dated and in poor state of repair. The shower was mouldy, the bathroom floor was wet and very cold, the toilet cistern was defective, with difficulty it did a economy flush and it was overflowing all the time into the Toilet Pan and making an awful noise that kept us very much awake most of the night. A Bedside light was defective, and the Door did not lock from the inside and with the key from without it was very difficult to the point I though the key would break/snap! Bar service was rude, ignoring me for over 10 minutes, without the slightest hint or a smile and "I'll be right with you". Did not get the Order of Drinks correct, only providing one and whilst I waited for the second drink, the bar tender, continued to make drinks for others. Another customer, obviously local, said "You've not finished his drinks order he asked for a Pint of MADRI too. No Apology, no remorse. The manager spoke to the Bar tender out of ear shot and there were exchanged disapproving looks. The 'Managers' facial composure toward me was very much one of hostility and remained the same at breakfast the following morning. The breakfast whilst reasonable was predominately poor-quality Bacon and Sausages. Poached eggs barely had a running yolk and the toasted bread, had seen the toaster in the work surface but had never been in it. Why service Butter directly out of the fridge when it isn't spreadable? When I returned the Room Key and advised the same manager about the Toilet, Bedside lamp and Door Lock, her response was shocking and insinuated that I was a lair, "I've just had someone stay in that room for a month and they didn't have anything to report and certainly never told me about these" This you are a lair stance continued as re repeated the sentence no less than 3 times throughout me explaining again that the faults were real and actual and I was not making them up.

Came here with a colleague for an overnighter before a business meeting locally. The room was comfortable and more spacious than I'd expected for the price, so we went into dinner feeling positive. The food was fine, decent pub grub - my colleague had the spaghetti carbonara which he enjoyed and I had the hunter's chicken which was as expected. Service was friendly. After the meal we retired to the bar and my colleague, who hadn't been drinking, wasn't feeling 100 per cent as he'd been unwell with a stomach bug. He decided to retire so I did the same but not - here it comes - before the young barman decided he should drop everything and take my colleague a jug of iced water, to his room, in case he needed it. Yes, that would have been difficult on a busy evening but we both thought it was a great touch. It's a nice place in a lovely setting but seriously, this inn is all about the people.

Went there as a group of seven for brunch, and it seemed dis-organised from the start. They didn’t seem to know we were coming, even though we had pre-booked - no table was prepared. The drinks order arrived incorrect, and we then had an extremely long wait for the food to arrive. When it did, five of the seven meals were either incorrect or incomplete. Had to ask for cutlery, resulting in another long wait before we could start eating. No condiments on table. Food was pricey, but was prepared to pay that for a special occasion, However it’s disappointing to be served tiny portions of pretty poor quality food. Then they gave us someone else’s bill by mistake. We didn’t complain, but we heard other people doing so, and this was at a time of day where it was pretty quiet, so I hate to think what it would have been like if it were busy. Its shame, because the pub itself seems very nice First and last visit.

Advertising Christmas season - but no Christmas decorations and then told cant have Christmas meal unless pre-booked - pointed out that this was advertised as the arrangement for parties of 8. (Another party sat beside out table a while later and were presented with the same refusal of Christmas meal) Our party was more or less first in, yet it took 2 hours to serve the meal!!! When it did arrive the Lasagne was congealed and inedible Direct email to Knife and Cleaver has produced no response nearly two weeks after the disaster - does management not know just how appalling things were that night? And why would you not respond like you wanted people to return - the offer of a bottle of wine is a joke

I had booked the private dining area for my mum’s surprise 70th birthday meal with our family. When we arrived, there had been a minor internal miscommunication which meant that another party was still using the area (although we were early), which bothered me as I needed to decorate before my mum arrived and we would not have time. The manager was aware of my disappointment, and did everything he could to alleviate the minor inconvenience including showing us another area we could have. I had specifically looked for a country pub with a private dining area so we declined and waited. After the delay, we were seated. From the moment my mum arrived, she was made to feel very special. The food was exceptional (and it really was), and the service was so personal and professional. My mum said it was one of the best meals/dining experiences she has had. Huge thanks to all of the staff, and especially the manager on that day for your problem solving, understanding and compassion. You were amazing, and made my mum’s day! Having previously had a good experience when dining at this venue prior to covid, we chose it to celebrate 2 family birthdays as a party of ten. Our overall experience was poor throughout our group. With all of us choosing starter and main, the majority ordered Sunday roast. The starters were ok, but after a very long delay, the majority of main course dishes were served tepid and unapperising. Despite assurances that the roasts would arrive with extra gravy and following further polite requests, none was forthcoming. Having worked in professional hospitality, I know that it's best not to complain and for your dish to be sent back to a busy, stressed kitchen! For what we paid, it really was an underwhelming experience, and we won't be returning.

Room was average and a bit tatty, the bathroom shower unit is tired and requires smartening up. There are only nine rooms and it’s reasonably busy so they are well used. Cleanliness wasn’t great but I guess it was acceptable. I’m assuming no one checks the cleaning and the cleaner doesn’t really care. The beds had not been pulled out and vacuumed behind for some time. I check this because I’m an experienced traveller and I know about the hightened risk of bedbugs My bed was awful and very very uncomfortable. Pillows were rock hard and to be frank the bedding was cheap and not hotel standard. I am fussy about bedding and it’s important to me. Subsequently I had two awful nights sleep. It was obvious that the staff were completely over stretched as they seemed to do everything at pace that was completely unfair to them. There appeared to be only to people serving what is quite a large restaurant. My wife’s ordered a sirloin steak. A while later she was told they were sold out! She was offered a t-bone at the same price which was fair enough. However when it arrived it was only suitable to sole shoes! They did adjust the bill which was fair enough, but I cannot understand how a restaurant is run with inadequate staff numbers and so many items missing from the menu? Having to wait over 90 minutes for min course to be served would have been forgiven if the food had lived up to expectations. Unfortunately it very definitely didn't."A large party" was given as the reason for the delay in being served (I assume they were also to blame for at least 4 menu items being out of stock.) I've no issue with that at all but maybe a heads up upon arrival would have been useful. As stated, all would have been forgiven had the food not been the wrong side of average. For "toasted" pitta and hummus starters we had suspected "microwaved" pitta -it was warm but definitely hadn't seen a grill. The pork crackling with the belly pork was never going to crackle, it was rubbery, mash was luke warm and apple sauce literally tasted of nothing. It was all topped off nicely with lumpy gravy- you could see the lumps on the plate when it was served! The issue with liquids carried over to my friend's white wine sauce with her miniature muscles - it was actually white, like something I'd serve with my Christmas pudding.Needless to say we did not stay for desert...we'd probably still be waiting for it now. Waiting staff were great but were hugely let down by cooking and planning colleagues.

Organised a group gathering for a baby shower here and it was brilliant! They gave us the front marqueed area to ourselves where although the weather was horrendous we were fully protected (no leaking roof, patio heaters and fairy lights). The waitress was very kind and accommodating, and the food was great with any missing items resolved quickly. Would defo return for a similar group celebration

A little underwhelming, truth be told! Waited 10 mins to be seated, then a further 15 mins to order a drink. Asked 4 times for a high chair before one appeared. That set the tone and should have told us something. Bits of the menu were unavailable, then one of the kids meals was incorrect - no drama, mistakes happen. Came to order dessert to be told they’d run out of ice cream! What!? Decided to cut our losses and get the bill, then waited a further 15 minutes, as “we only have one card machine!!!!” On the plus side the place was packed, so I guess it’s just too busy for them. Not the first dining experience there to be bordering on debacle, so 50/50 as to whether we’ll give them a final chance to be disappointed. Probably! Such a shame, as the garden is done out fantastically well. Fur coat and no knickers? Possibly.

We feel very let down by this restaurant!! They had on the menu roast sirloin which my husband ordered but when we “finally” received it after waiting an hour and a half to his shock he noticed it wasn’t sirloin at all it was topside. My husband being a butcher knows his meat as wasn’t impressed at all as we all know sirloin is more expensive than topside. He mentioned it to the waiter but we didn’t get any response from the chef and all the waiter said was thanks for your input. Absolutely shocking !!!!! So all in all we had to wait an hour and a half (freezing to death sitting outside due to Covid restrictions) for our sirloin roast dinner which was actually cheap topside and wasn’t even cut the right way, and our stuffing arriving 5 minutes after we had finished our meal. Won’t be returning!!!!!

Visited here many times, usually the service and food is good when they actually have what is on the menu. Booked a table for the Sunday just gone, never received a confirmation so called up to enquire. The service was poor, three different people trying to take orders without anyone knowing who was looking after the table, fairly rude. The list of what wasn’t available from the menu was ridiculous, ended up leaving without eating. Also told they couldn’t provide change for the drink as they didn’t have any. It’s not uncommon for over half the menu to be unavailable, should be pre warned so you don’t make a wasted journey.

We visited on the 13/4/2021 and was very impressed with the improvements to the garden it was beautiful. We were the first to arrive at 12.00 we were seated and drinks were ordered and menus presented. During the next hour the garden dining area filled up with orders being taken and food delivered . We kept trying to attract a member of the waiting staff with no success After 1 hour my husband donned his mask and walked across the garden and spoke to a member of staff and was told she would be over in a few minutes. The member of staff did not come over so we had to chase down another member of staff to take our order, We explained we had been waiting to order for over an hour and were the first to be seated she replied I know you were the fist to arrive and apologised,Our meal of belly pork was disappointing looked as it had made in advance it was cold and the mashed potato was not hot only warm. We were very disappointed as we have eaten here before and the food was very good. We were looking forward to our visit as it was our first time out for a meal in 4 months.

We both had a delicious pudding after the main, sticky toffee and custard and a vanilla cheesecake. Thanks also to the service on the night, very pleasant and welcoming in what are difficult circumstances at this time. Our Dinner Club has been going strong for nearly 3 years now and this was the first visit here and it certainly will not be our last !! The pub decor and intial welcoming was positive and although the waiter/bartender ( Anthony) was alone at this point, he made sure we were shown to our table promptly and with a friendly manner. The menus were lovely and already you get a feel, when it's not an extensive menu, the food will be good.Drinks arrived promptly and we then ordered. Our party of 5 all chose different , so it was great to see each dish come out.All food arrived hot and very well presented. As for the taste, AMAZING ! We all said we did not want our mains to finish because it was so good. So flavoursome, fresh and made with great care.I had the Vegetarian Wellington and it was simply stunning!Plates were cleared promptly, drinks replenished and we then ALL had a pudding which we don't usually, but as the mains were so good, you knew pudding would be too.And we was not disappointed, fresh, delicious and a great end to a fab meal.Anthony the waiter was a really lovely chap who only young himself, is a credit to the establishment. We don't often revisit places we have been to unless we really enjoy it and want to try other dishes and enjoyed the setting. This is certainly one we will be going back to (with the missing 4 members of the group)Thank You to all , we had a great evening and highly recommended

Business trip solo 2 night stay. Lovely old inn with both a warm feeling and contemporary at the same time. The open fire and log burner were lit with it being cold outside which gave it a sense of that cosy feeling. There is a bar and a dining area. Staff were attentive, efficient and friendly. Toilets in the bar were clean and fresh. Plenty to choose from on the breakfast menu but lacking options for those who like fruit and yogurts which is my favourite. I didn’t have a cooked breakfast but others did and they looked good. Plenty of vegetarian options for breakfast. The evening meal menu again had plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans. I enjoyed the flavours of the vegan curry one night, and the cleaver burger another. Both served without delay, piping hot and tasty. The house red was pleasant and affordable at just over £5 a glass for a large measure. I stayed in a king size room that was well presented in decoration and cleanliness with a deep slipper shoe bath and shower. Toiletries and tea / coffee supplied and of good quality. The bed was comfy and bedding fresh and clean. The room is heated by an electric convector heater perfectly adequate at keeping the room warm. All in all a nice stay and would book again. As a lone traveller I felt safe and secure here.Thank you.

Visited the pub on a Sunday in December. We asked for a table for 3 (2 adults and 1 child) and was told the resturant was fully booked for the day (there were around 8 people in the resturant so assumed it was bookings that hadn't yet arrived) however, we could eat in the bar area.We found a table (there were 5 people already in the bar area) and decided on food and some drinks (sandwiches and a starter for the little one). When I went to order one of the waitresses whispered to the guy behind the bar that they weren't taking any more food orders because there was a buffet for a private party. I asked how long for and he said "at least half an hour".I'm a little confused how they could not handle the amount of food orders on a Sunday (keeping in mind out of the 13 in the pub, some already had their food). It isn't like the private party just turned up unexpectedly or that they don't know the kind of demand they have for Sunday lunch. It isn't the first time we have been disappointed at this pub so probably will not be back any time soon!

The good: Checkin / Evening Meal / Breakfast (10/10 for the food)The bad : Rooms (I stayed in 9) Rooms are decorated in very dark colours, the front door has no curtain so I had to improvise by hanging a towel on the back of the door to get some sense of privacy, there is a porch light outside and I couldn’t find a switch to turn it off, so it stayed on ALL NIGHT! ):No central heating, but the electric wall heater was adequate. The Ugly : The hotel is situated across the road from an old church... the bells chime every 1/2 hour ALL NIGHT and every 15 minutes from 7am. WHY?? Not the hotels fault, but note to owners: you need to approach the church and ask them why they feel it is necessary for the bells to ring 24-hours a day...It’s bad for your business, I only got 3 hours sleep and it ruined my stay. Does no one in Houghton Conquest own a watch?? Do they need to be reminded of the time constantly? It’s bloody ridiculous and I will never stay at this hotel again because of its proximity to this torturous noise through the night...Fellow travellers : if you’re a light sleeper... you have been warned!

Have stayed here and dined annually in 4 of the last 5 years, the change we saw on this visit was obvious. No longer fine dining but instead a basic pub menu. I ordered the steak and ale pie but I am afraid it had to go back to the kitchen. The meat, of which there was plenty, was so tough I couldn’t chew it. The staff were most apologetic and brought me belly pork as an alternative. This is the first time ever I have been unable to eat a meal. My wife’s belly pork however was fine. There was a private party going on when we arrived at 6pm and it was still in full swing right outside and right in front of the bedrooms until the band stopped at 9.45pm. Jollity continued until much later. Not a peaceful way to end the day especially with kids having a game of knocking on our bedroom door and running off. No thought was given to the residents.

This restaurant and pub has disappointed us again. Thought we would give another try but sadly will not return. Several choices were not available on the main course and dessert menus. We do not have a problem with paying a little more than the average pub meal but do expect a reasonable amount of food on the plate. Small portions are delivered so you have to order side dishes to make an average meal size . Which escalates the overall price of your meal. Not value for money ☹️

The vegetables and trimmings were lovely but sadly the beef was full of fat and grissle. When this was pointed out the waitress offered to replace the meal or provide new beef. The replacement meat was much better. For dessert I had a syrup pudding which I think had been cooked to long as it was a suet type pudding which was absolutely solid.
