Thank you to Amelia and our server (I'm so sorry I didn't get his name!), who did a terrific job! Thank you so so much for making our day so special!

Very disappointed with the food. Chicken wrap served very cold from fridge. Hummus dip also so cold there was no flavour. Halloumi pitta needed a magnifying glass to find the halloumi and the pitta was so over toasted it was inedible. This dish was deducted from the bill. Coffees were so late arriving they had to be served in cardboard cups to take into the show. This is just snack/lunch food not dinner. Staff friendly but just not enough of them for the numbers of people attending. And a tip - if you do decide to go - make sure you book and, if you have bad hips/knees/mobility, make sure you ask for a low table and not a ridiculously high one!

Dining in the wonderful Storeyhouse surrounded by memories of the previous ODEON building for an evening meal prior to walking around Chester..... Food was delicious, service excellent and cost reasonable. My only reservation would be our seating location, which was in the open area between the restaurant and theatre. Fortunately, the place was not busy and very few people walked past. On a busy night I can imagine it would be very different, so recommend selecting a table nearer the front window....

This review is purely for the kitchen I didn’t want to review Storyhouse negatively as I love the place. It’s an amazing & much needed addition to Chester. We are members & use the cinema weekly if possible, see comedy, plays & use the library regularly, go to outside events, I would be lost without it. But after five plus years the service in the Kitchen never seems to have ironed out it’s teething problems. Now I realise things have changed with covid but the same issues were going on pre pandemic 😷 An example, of unfortunately many incidents, by us and friends. I popped in to get a iced latte before the cinema. I had half an hour to spare so didn’t think it would be an issue. There were three staff working and only a few customers in the whole place. I was the only person at the bar. Perfect. I ordered & the bar guy said he would get it done straight away as I was going to the cinema, my order went on the wall in the coffee queue. After 5 minutes a customer sitting at one of the tall tables with a friend enquired if their order would be arriving soon as he had been waiting an hour! The guy serving looked on the system & the order hadn’t even be passed to the kitchen. After the customer reordered & sat down after not much in the way of apology. I went up again to talk to the server as 20 minutes had passed & I needed to go to get my seat. I had been standing at the bar and when I asked if it would be much longer, he looked at me as if he had never seen me before and asked what I had ordered. He was so bemused. 🤷‍♀️I then pointed to the order slip & off he went to make it. Then he disappeared for 5 minutes to get ice. Finally he came over with two iced mochas??! I took them & ran. I wish this was the only occasion something liked this happened….The actually food and drink are great btw. To the point we rarely used the Kitchen now after too many bad experiences also why no half time theatre drinks… They need to take a leaf from the service at the Grosvenor park, which is super efficient.

Me and my partner went for dinner and a movie at Storyhouse and ate in the Kitchen as I'd had the food recommended to me before hand. From arrival until we left the restaurant area to watch the film we were made to feel comfortable and welcomed by all the staff there. A lovely woman named Beth was our main server and was exceptional, as were the rest of the staff who I unfortunately didn't get the name of. The food was amazing and the staff took great care to ensure I was ok to eat it with my allergy. We will definitely be going again.

The food here was not great at all. They have also expanded the restaurant area and added tables to the general area where theatre goers congregate which is where we sat. This made for a poor experience particularly as an electronic door was opening continuously which made it very cold. Food was borderline average. Also, the toilet facilities are woefully inadequate for the size of the venue.

We have visited the Kitchen within the StoryHouse complex many times and have had lovely meals with fabulous service. However, our most recent experience will be our last. Having booked well in advance and been shown to our table, it was over half an hour before anyone came to take an order - this, in spite of having twice walked up to where the staff were congregated to ask if someone could take our order. When our order eventually arrived, it was missing three of our four main dishes. There was no explanation but lots of furious activity to correct the mistake. We were grateful for the 50% reduction of our bill but would have preferred the service we remembered from previous trips.

I love the Storyhouse in general, it is a great place, but left down on this occasion and they need a fair feedback. Ordered food and drinks at 1.30pm, attempted to order at the bar but sent back to my table with the promise that someone was going to collect my order, after 15 min waiting someone finally came over. We received the food at 2.30pm and left waiting for another half an hour before our drinks showed up (when our plates were already empty). Something wrong here. People all around complaining. The family next to us was able to get 4 coffees after almost 1 hr. No one was happy.

The menu is exciting and the food, when it comes, is excellent. If you're attending a show at the Storyhouse then the Storyhouse Kitchen is the obvious place to eat before the show. However you need to sit down at least an hour and preferably more than that before the performance starts. The problem is that there are a lot of people all aiming to finish eating at the same time. But it IS good, so get there early and enjoy. I guess the same problem doesn't apply at lunchtime

We've eaten there a couple of times now for a pre-theatre meal. The tables are big and long, so you might find yourself sat beside strangers. It's set within the gorgeous library. The ambience is wonderful. The relaxed atmosphere finds folk enjoying drinks both before and post theatre. It's a fantastic place to enjoy. At first glance the menu looks a bit odd. It's Libyan, Moroccan with a twist. Let me say that those choices are not a natural selection for us and, at first glance, there doesn't seem much on the menu but just close your eyes, point at the menu and order. You will not be disappointed. Dips and Cornish sardines on couscous is not what my husband would ever order. He hates couscous but because he loves sardines went for it and ate every scrap. He loved it. I ordered a bavotte 6oz steak with lybian potato and tiny whole carrots and parsnips. It was divine and the tastiest meal I've had out for quite a while. How they managed to perfectly cook that tender steak was a credit to them. 4 of us had 2 courses and 2 of us had a dessert. Without drinks the cost was £69. The amount on our plates wasn't excessiveve but was perfect and ample for a pre-theatre meal. The staff could do with a bit of training. It needs someone to run it, to guide the staff so things happen more quickly eg being welcomed and guided go the pre-booked table. Food ordering etc. But that didn't detract from the fact that all the staff couldn't have done more for us. When you get 3 waiters in succession asking if you are enjoying the food you do feel as though you are a valued customer. A smashing place and we will be going again. I would suggest booking beforehand.

Really disliked the large tables - impossible to relax and have a conversation with others so close. Food and drinks were ordered and arrived without too much delay and food was ok.Then it all fell apart. We waited for half an hour after finishing but no one came to clear the tables or ask us about dessert so we gave up and went to the desk to ask for a dessert menu. This was refused and we were told someone would bring it. It never arrived so after another 15 mins we gave up and went to the bar and got coffee.Just as we were about to go into the theatre someone came to clear the table - about 80 mins after we finished eating. We said we had given up trying to get dessert and the server shrugged her shoulders and walked away. The problem appeared to be lots of young servers all rushing round with no assigned table to serve and no one directing them - totally chaotic.

I've eaten here four times and every single time we've had to wait ages to even be acknowledged, never mind getting our order taken or getting our food. There is usually one person behind the bar assiduously avoiding eye contact in case they're required to do something. To paying visitors, it doesn't matter what job you're contracted to do, you should make customers your number one priority and get people served. It particularly annoys me because Storyhouse has a cinema, theatre and loads of events so presumably a huge proportion of diners have a time they need to be finished by. It wouldn't take a genius manager to suggest that waiters ask if you're doing anything after your meal so that they can get a move on. Even when we ordered last night the food took a lot longer to arrive than you might expect for salads and dips (no cooking time required surely). The dishes have been 90% good (apart from some overdone felafels a couple of weeks ago). However my overall experience of the Kitchen is one of frustration: it *could* be so good but the attitude of the staff is way too casual.

The Storyhouse building, library come bar/restaurant has a really nice feel to it. Relaxed, laid back and unique. Great place to sit and chat and enjoy a drink which are reasonably priced. The same, unfortunately, could not be said about the food. Lacked flavour and although seemed reasonably priced, by the time you are charged extra for veg and considering the small portion sizes and lack of flavour it was expensive at £62 for two. Calamari was tasty but at £7.50 the portion was small (5 small rings), cauliflower was raw and everything on the plate was pickled which was not clear on the menu. Lebanese potatoes were nice but not as flavoursome as they sounded. Meatballs were the tastiest of our order. The biggest disappointment was the sticky toffee puddings, solid and lukewarm rather than soft and hot. I mentioned the two dishes we were disappointed with but the attitude from the staff was "well you will know what to not order when you come next time"! Apart from this the staff were very pleasant and helpful. I love the ethos of the place in that it is a charity not for profit and any profit benefit the community.

We really didn’t want sit for an hour and pay a fortune for restaurant food before the film, and we saw this as last chance as we passed the cinema. We entered 7.15 and were faced with hundreds of people milling around bench tables high noise level. We sat, nervously ordered after discussion with Evan and within 5 minutes our food arrived. We had four selections and the range and taste was great. Better, the hall emptied for the play 7.25 and we had the room almost to ourselves. We relaxed enjoyed our med/eastern meal, and chilled in a lovely eating area. Totally recommend this eatery - but not at show time! We were so lucky to have found a fast food meal of 5star restaurant quality. Evan was exceptional in his service and manner. Be careful of the price of beer £4 a small bottle, so our £6 shandies cane as a shock. Evan spoke with the manager and returned some money and indicated going forward the price of a shandy is more acceptable to all. Relaxed on the sofa before our film started. Thanks Evan you saved the evening.

We went for dinner before seeing Annie. The restaurant was fairly quiet so we were quite surprised the food took so long (still, we were in no rush so this wasn't a problem). Sadly only 3 meals arrived --and the waitress was really unhelpful regarding the missing meal trying to tell us that we hadn't ordered anything else. Shocking service. And sadly, the food was very poor; I had the home-made dips to start (fair) followed by chickpea falafels (not at all tasty - only ate 1 and a bit). When the waitress collected our plates, we told her that the food wasn't so good (not that she asked); she didn't look like she was at all concerned. Last to be served ( after those who arrived later) and even with an hour to spare before a show had to rush and leave some of the food as it arrived 45 minutes after sitting down and the restaurant was nearly empty. There are either too few staff or they are poorly trained, but we may as well go to a local restaurant and pop back for the show. I think also there need to be more bar staff during intervals as it is really difficult to get served and rather random in terms of who does. That apart- I really love Storyhouse

Lebanese tapas is how I would describe. Very delicious however the reason mark not higher due to very expensive for portion sizes you couldn’t have a filing meal for a reasonable price. We stopped in after a recommendation on the day a big show started, so they were almost fully booked. I begged - BEGGED!- for a quick, early meal, and luckily the lovely staff member took pity on us.

I have frequented The Kitchen quite a few times now and, whilst the food and drinks are good, the service really does let it down.

Already quite busy when we arrived, there were a number of people enjoying a coffee before entering the cinema and just having a coffee while making use of the library. Friendly staff and great coffee and cakes, although there is more on offer than just this. Comfortable seating areas arranged for couples and families alike with easy access to the rest of the facilities within Storyhouse. Even if you’re not visiting any other facility, this is well worth dropping into.

Ive used the Kitchen at Storyhouse a number of times and despite the food and drinks being nice and the atmosphere lovely the service let's it down to the point where I'd avoid eating there and get irritated just ordering drinks. The process of ordering is confusing and there's always customers unsure if they are in the right place or who's next and the staff don't attempt to help or organise. The pace is slow and conveys a sense of friendly incompetence. My simple order of two drinks was made up incorrectly twice today! I also saw them make mistakes on the other orders while I was waiting and one person collected and refilled a jug by holding it by the spout which is unhygienic. The whole aspect of kitchen service is just slow, confused, dosy and below par and really let's down a great place. Please sort it out!

We were going to a concert in the evening and wanted something to eat before the performance. What lovely food. It is food from The Levant so, I chose chicken skewers and my husband had harrisa sausages. We shared a tabouleh salad and had drinks from the bar. For dessert chocolate torte and coffee. It is set in a library within the theatre complex. Very nice atmosphere indeed. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Great place for food or just coffee.

We happened across this wonderful place whilst on a family weekend away. We initially were unable to get a table however the waiting staff were very accommodating and managed to seat us within 45mins. We sat and had a drink at the bar whilst we waited. Bar staff were polite, friendly and helpful especially when we had questions around the gins on offer. Once seated and decisions made around food (Lebanese type tapas) the food came quickly and was well presented also utterly delicious. We found the bill to be very reasonable for the quality of food we had eaten. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Chester. However I would advise to book if planning a lunch/early dinner as it was extremely busy when we visited.

Interesting menu, middle eastern sharing plates. Food was very good, recommend the falafels and patatas bravas. The lamb shoulder was very small so a bit steep at £7 but delicious. The orange blossom frozen terrine was exquisite. We also liked the communal dining aspect at long, refectory style tables. Ideal for pre-theatre as on site at The Storyhouse

This really was an eerily quiet night for anywhere in the city on a Saturday night, with only ourselves and a foursome dining in what is a fairly large area. Apparently there was no theatre show on this particular evening, but even that failed to explain the lack of custom. Maybe word hasn’t got out there yet or maybe people don’t enjoy dining in very public spaces. Whatever the reason they are missing a real treat. The menu is Eastern Mediterranean inspired and different to anything else in the locality and was delightfully fresh, light and tasty. We enjoyed 3 different dips with small pitta bread, then plates of Harissa, Chicken & Pistachio, Batata Harra and Mujaddara - all washed down with a glass of wine. Amazingly, the whole experience came in at just over £40! No reason not to come again some time soon.

This place is actually quite nice, however, it's quite disjointed. I would return to sit in a different place, so maybe my own fault for choosing where I sat.The staff are really lovely, but my main gripe is that the food IS TOTALLY OVERPRICED!

We were very impressed when entering the building. Lovely place. We ordered the recommended food for 4 people. tapas 2 plates each. The pita bread was excellent. Nothing wrong with the quality of the food, but we all came away hungry. The bill was excessive at £85.50 Each plate only had 3 portions on. So 3 meat Balls 3 Prawns ect, etc, Wine was &25.00 a bottle for Malbec. I would recommend bigger portion sizes or a reduction in the price. I would go back again if the changes were made.

Well the last time we were in this building was many years ago! Wow where does the time go and what a difference in the food. No choc ices or ice cream tubs! Levant food! It was certainly a change. 'Made for sharing' that wasn't very clear on the menu well I did have my specs on and it definitely didn't say that on the menu. It was obvious when what we'd ordered, that's what it was, still the Harissa sausage went down a treat and the Watermelon and Feta salad was lush! Next time will know the score and order a bit more. Gosh the place has got me rhyming well it is a library with a Kitchen and I do like libraries. Will go and try this again as the serving staff friendly and I quite liked the atmosphere! Will keep you posted.

There are a number of places to eat local to the new Storyhouse theatre/library in Chester, so it has got to be good to warrant a return visit. ... And it is! I've become a fan of the Storyhouse in general, and the Kitchen is a treat. A completely eclectic choice on the menu, Mediterranean, Eastern, range of tastes. Service was good, as always, and our first Pimms of the summer. What more could you ask for.

As a vegan, Storyhouse offers a great selection (I only wish they'd label the vegan options clearly on the menus so I didn't always have to ask). The current food is really tasty and good value if you eat tapas style. If you go with a friend I'd recommend just getting the humus and pitta, a salad and some side orders to share between you.

I had high expectations for this restaurant as middle eastern cuisine is my absolute favourite. I only had a quick lunch and although the service was friendly and unobtrusive, the food was just ok. My squash and halloumi meal was lukewarm. Also I am not convinced the pickles worked well layered with hummus and halloumi but this may just be my preference.

No worry about pre-performance rush!

Whilst out shopping in Chester my family and I decided to pop into Storyhouse for a hot chocolate. After seeing the menu we also ended up having food! The menu is small but the food is healthy, varied and tastes delicious, the drinks were good, my son says the best hot chocolate! We also had a vegan brownie from the cake selection which again was delicious. I would highly recommend the Storyhouse for food. I have recently taken my mum who also loved it and now recommending to all of her friends as a new meeting place!

Went in yesterday, bought afternoon coffee and sat down at an unreserved table. Within 10 minutes we were approached by staff and asked to leave as they wanted the table for somebody else. Didn't even let us finish our drinks or offer anywhere else to sit instead! The worst experience as a paying customer we've ever had - rude, embarrassing, inconsiderate, abrupt. Will never set foot in there again, AVOID.

We went to The Kitchen before we went to see blood brothers at the storyhouse theatre. The food was amazing. I am ceoliac and often find it difficult to eat out but most of the menu was suitable for me. We had the trilogy of dips to share with gluten free pitta then I had the fish with potatoes and salad which was gorgeous. The pear desert was lovely too. All in all a delicious meal. The service was great ,attentive, sociable and efficient. I would thoroughly recommend here to eat especially if you are going to the theatre or cinema.

During my day out to Chester, I visited this restaurant for lunch. I decided to have a meal rather than a light snack and I wasn't disappointed. The food was full of flavour and cooked perfectly. However, I did feel that the seating arrangement was a little unusual...long, rectangular 'canteen-style' tables were arranged throughout the eating area. Perfect for large families sitting together, but couples may find the lack of privacy a little annoying. The surrounding library books within the eating space added a quirkiness to the environment and made the experience different and therefore special.

Well, this was certainly a novel experience! The restaurant in The Storyhouse is surrounded by bookshelves and you realise you are eating in a library setting! The seating is very different - long metal tables with everyone seated together. This can make for a warm friendly atmosphere (if you are lucky..) The staff are delightful and guide you through the Mediterranean menu - alternately translating and expounding, and all with much good humour. When we had sorted out starters from mains from sides, we ordered flatbreads, dips and some chicken dish - but it's all good and makes a welcome change. It's worth a try before visiting the lovely Storyhouse theatre.
