Was a nice little restaurant but as of 5th April, it seems to have closed down. Perhaps for a refurb? Hope this is the case..

My favourite place for lunch if I'm visiting Tavistock! The cheese scones are amazing!! The burgers are equally as nice. I would also recommend buying a cake for the road!

£23.85 for two cheese scones plus cheese and chutney, two hard and dry plain scones with jam and cream and a pot of tea for two. This was between a friend and I, not each. The cheese scones were really tasty, the cheese portion sizeable and the chutney very nice but not in any way worth almost ten pounds (and tea was extra!). The plain scones were hard and dry. I did tell the waitress they were dry but no member of staff followed up on this. I was with a friend who I was supposed to be treating but I left feeling utterly, utterly ripped off and embarrassed. I understand from other reviews that they have in the past sold Dartmoor pony meat. Had I known this beforehand, I would never have set foot in the place, nor will I again.

As a local, I am keen to support independent cafés, but this was sadly below par. The owner (I presume) seemed to be sat barking orders at staff members which I find uncomfortable viewing and listening to. They seemed to be working hard and doing their best. The coffee was bitter and overpriced, £3.99 for a flat white seems extortionate, even given the current cost of living crisis. For this money, I’d expect an accompanying nibble on the side of the saucer, but it was just a coffee in a pretty mug. Sadly given the atmosphere and coffee, I don’t think I’ll be returning.

The family were all very keen to enjoy a Devon cream tea whilst on holiday and so, after a fair amount of research, we opted for The Kitchen which had fantastic reviews. A lovely little tea room, beautifully decorated and quite cosy, in one of the side streets of Tavistock - we arrived, having had a good walk beforehand in order to build up an appetite! Having not had a cream tea for some time, I must say that I was shocked at the price (£8.99) but everything has gone up in price so I suspect this may now be the norm. There did seem to be a bit of surprise when we ordered the cream teas (I think perhaps it was still rather early in the afternoon) and we had to wait nearly 30 minutes for them to arrive which was also rather frustrating. Eventually however, we were served with very nice pots of hot tea - and a couple of scones each, with plenty of cream and jam - beautifully presented on slate boards. Unfortunately, after all that, the scones themselves proved to be very disappointing - particularly given the reputation of the place. They were edible but rather under-baked towards the bottom so I'm afraid we were less than impressed. I did let the waitress know as I felt that perhaps there was a problem with the oven or something similar, and whilst she was apologetic, we were a little disappointed that it was left at that - an offer to bring us an alternative or reduce the bill slightly might have been a nice gesture.

I wanted to try this place as I regularly go to a couple of other venues in Tavi. The table was kindly wiped down before we sat down but was so sticky we couldnt touch it. We went for coffee, I asked for a americano with warm oat milk and my partner had a cappuccino with oat milk. My coffee was really bitter, I added a couple of sugars and I still couldn't drink it. My partners cappuccino, was definitely not a cappuccino. I can't really describe it. Maybe weak coffee, which wasn't milky with chocolate sprinkles on it. Neither of us drank them. Waitress was nice but when I asked for the bill she brought the card machine and didn't tell me how much it was, until I asked. From a drink.perspective, I really would not recommend. Such a shame because I like to support local business.

We weren’t sure if it was open but peered through the window and saw it was. Nice pleasant and friendly greeting, comfy seats. We both went for one of the specials, sticky chicken in a brioche bun with fries and coleslaw. Very tasty and all very fresh. Would have preferred it served on a plate instead of a slate but it didn’t detract from the taste 😋😋 All washed down with a lovely pot of tea. Wouldn’t hesitate to go back, a little gem tucked away in Tavistock.

Visited the cafe for tea and cake one Friday afternoon. We hadn’t visited before so when we arrived stood by the “wait to be seated” sign, a lady came over and showed us to our table. We then sat and waited …. and waited… for someone to serve us. The cafe wasn’t busy it was around 1500 so not a peak time. Whilst we waited we had to listen to a lady (who I presume was the owner) sit and be obnoxious to her staff; demanding they come to her to speak to her (whilst they were busy working) and making rude comments about them not using her electric to charge her phones . Eventually my boyfriend stood up to go and order. We then waited for our food , it was literally a cup of tea and cake , it took a long time whilst the waitress helped herself to some cake . I do have to say that what we had was delicious and the selection of home made bakes very impressive. We then came to pay, we asked for the bill , the waitress came over with a card machine but never said how much we owed nor did she provide a bill, she just kept repeating “cash or card?”, it was so odd I made a joke we had to guess how much it was ! We paid and left , We won’t be returning unfortunately

I went here for a brunch treat for my son after breaking up for half term. We both ordered drinks and pancakes, I then asked for some water as it was a hot day. All was ok with food and drinks, but then I got a shock when presented with the bill £2.20 for small glass of tap water!!! What, I am sure it was illegal to charge for this.I can assure you it was not a bottle of brand name water as I did not ask for this or receive a bottle which I could have returned as an error- it was tap water in a small glass! Disgusting behaviour for a local cafe.Unfortunately I was unable to make a fuss in the cafe as this was a treat for my son and he would have been upset, no need to say I will certainly NOT go there again.

This is the kind of company they are! Simply parked in a spot, told that I don’t know how to drive because I left this gap, asked me to move however even if I moved they couldn’t have fit anywhere anyway, then VERY rude owner of business decided to start having a go at me with my partner and child saying you’re supposed to park with tyres on white line (asked a traffic warden I spotted and he said NO part of a vehicle is allowed over white line at front/rear technically) then proceeded to wait for me to walk around the corner and wrote this on the back of my car!

Salt beef sandwhich and coffee both fantastic, but, impotrtantly, the service was great and unhurried and there was no presuure to leave (we talked for ages, and no pressure to buy more.) As an added bonus I stupidly left my 'phone on the table with all that implies these days, they'd put it behind the counter. The quality of the food was good. We had a breakfast which was a little expensive in itself as was the coffee but local sausages made up for that. The problem was the compulsory service charge of ten percent added to the bill without explanation. I don't mind tipping and the service was actually prompt, polite and efficient with a smile but I object to not being given a choice in the matter. This is a shame as am local as am not aware of any other Tavistock eatery that does this. I checked the outside menu and it was in small print but there is a principle here. This is tavistock. Not Venice.

Food good but owner obnoxious. 4 cream teas at £7.95 each totals £31.80. Original bill over £46!! Queried and told as we had pot topped up and 2 extra tea bags asked for as filled it to top and was very weak we were charged £9.80 for the pleasure and the rest was a service charge!!!! 2nd bill given was again over £37 as now charged £4.90 for 2 tea bags. Told by VERY obnoxious owner sitting at back of cafe "well it was as good as you having another 2 cups of tea"! We didn't ask the poor young waitress to refill the pot full to brimming with hot water and as it was so weak we just asked her to put a couple of tea bags in. One of our party had de-caff tea and had a pot which held 2 normal tea cups whereas 3 of us shared 1 pot and only just managed 1 teacup each, hence we asked for a hot water top up. We ended up paying £34 and couldn't get out of there quick enough. Such a shame as the meals looked very good and could be a lovely place. We would advise the owner to work on her customer service and anyone who goes to double check their bill

We stumbled across this place whilst in Tavistock and decided to stop for breakfast. The interior is lovely and just what we were looking for. The food was lovely although maybe a little overpriced but I could cope with that. When we arrived the atmosphere was lovely and happy but it all changed when a lady that I can only presume is the owner arrived and it all changed. We could hear the lady bickering with staff and it really was not pleasant. However the thing that would stop me ever returning is the service charge!!!! I am always happy the tip, however I don’t agree with being forced to tip when food is already pricey and then when you pay the machine asks you for gratuity when people may not be aware they have already paid a service charge!! Will be going elsewhere next time.

Wanting only tea or coffee before driving onto Dartmoor for a picnic of pasties bought earlier that day, we stopped in Tavistock and called at the first cafe we found - The Kitchen. Not been since lockdown so we thought we would give it a go using the Eat Out to Help Out scheme. Same lovely food and good service as before. Don’t remember an automatic service charge of 10% being applied previously? It was also calculated on the cost of the meal before the discount which was not explained. I partly understand why this was done but I do think it better to leave service to discretion but point out the normal cost of the meal. The Kitchen in my view is sensibly not passing on the VAT cut of 15% which will help small businesses like this one. It will be interesting to see how other restaurants in Tavistock apply the changes during August.

I have been in on many occasions for coffee and lunch, but this was the first time I had come for one of their Bistro Evenings. It was a totally different vibe to the day-time. The food was amazing and the staff were very attentive. It was a packed house, but the service was very good. There is only a limited alcohol menu - beers & wine - but the choice was good. Myself and my friends will definitely be booking again! My only complaint would be that I would have preferred vegetables with my main course rather than salad (which I had already had with my starter!).

Good Menu, pleasant staff and good food. No bad remarks .........only good. First visit was just for Coffes and Cake. Second visit had their excellent American Styled Pancake with Maple Syrup. Also visited twice since for Coffee and Cake.

Always lovely food, great atmosphere. The food is more expensive the other pubs but worth the value.

Without much hesitation whenever I visit the family in Tavistock, myself and my mum will always adventure into the town to have a coffee and cake in our favourite spot. This being the Kitchen Cafe.

Been here a couple of times and excellent food. Salmon and crayfish platter is to die for. Amazing cakes. Would recommend to everyone who comes to Tavistock. Recently expanded and so plenty of space.

Tried to book in for a lunch party and found the owner to be very rude an unhelpful. The party was for 20 people and we were told that it would be too much effort to move the tables around to cater for us. We were also told that they could turn those tables over 2-3 times by the time we had arrived and eaten.Found another local restaurant and had a great time.Total bill was over £200 their loss!!

We were looking to find somewhere to eat, staying in Tavistock for the weekend, didn't realise this was a Pop Up, just for this weekend, hope they have continued as the food was fantastic, service was great and lovely atmosphere.

This is in my opinion the best cafe in Tavistock..best cakes, savoury food, atmosphere and coffee. However there is just one hazy cloud on my sunny review...and that is despite asking a couple of times whether any discount is given for bringing my own takeaway coffee cup the answer has been 'no' both times ! It's not about the money, more about demonstrating an eco friendly approach in these polluting times and surely if Costa can do it our own local cafe can when they excel in every other respect!!

Visited with my d-in-l and grandchildren this morning for drinks and cake. Lovely atmosphere, proper old fashioned tearoom, friendly staff. Our varied choice of cake was delicious and milkshakes for the children much better than the usual pop! Well done, it was charming.

My friend and I enjoyed lunch at this cafe. One of us had Eggs Royale, the other Croque-Monsieur; both were very tasty and good value for money. Service was friendly and efficient.

Whilst entertaining important business associates I stumbled upon this fine establishment. Nestled in the heart of the town, this spectacular restaurant took us by surprise. The atmospheric lighting, the carefully curated decor and the maitre d (I believe was called Ben) was extremely welcoming. The owner, Oliver, was very friendly and very informative about the origin of the Michelin grade menu and had a charm that was not wasted on my party.

Love this place. Went for Sunday lunch. Staff were very helpful. A couple of menu items were off, but the staff suggested alternatives that were delicious.
