We had a quiet Sunday dinner as we were staying at the place. The menu looked a bit ambitious but delivered. Altogether a rather nice experience.

My wife and I had the most beautiful roast beef Sunday lunch. Roast beef, mashed and roast potatoes, cabbage, mange tout, carrots and parsnips with lashings of meat gravy. Every mouthful was a delight. Nice location, nice ambiance and helpful friendly staff.

We went for breakfast. The breakfast was lovely but the serving sizes too small. Toast was ordered for a child and an adult. Both serving were just 1 slice. Enough for a small child but not an adult. Also a side of bacon was just 1 slice.

Husband got pie mash and kale. Was fine but kale was cold and hardly cooked I got risotto. It was lukewarm and tasteless and more of the consistency of second day cold rice pudding. Came served with broccoli and parsnips that were hard and broccoli cold. Has Parmesan crisps on top that were floppy and cold. Was not charged for my dish but obviously never ate more than a spoonful so was famished Deffo not be returning!

We arrived at 4.15 for a roast dinner. In the phone there said we might have slim pickings of meat due to lateness of booking but that was fine. On arriving found service to be poor at the bar especially when it wasn’t very busy at all. We were told they had all meats available which was good. We ordered our drinks and two bottles of wine. We then ordered our food after 15 mins so around 4.45. At about 5pm the food came and we were asked if we wanted any extra gravy, there was hardly any on the dinner in the first place, my husband could barely see where his was. Then I said my dinner is cold to which we found out that every dinner was cold. I put my finger into the mashed potato to check, cold, broccoli cold, Yorkshire pudding, everything cold. It was like it had been left under the hot lights for quite some time. There were uneven meat portions to the point my sister in law said she looked like hers was something leftover from dinner you’d give to her dog. It was that bad we complained. To be fair we were offered 4 fresh dinners but refused as a chef shouldn’t send 4 dinners like that out in the first place so we’re very wary of accepting replacement dinners. We then decided to ring somewhere else and leave. However we had the bottles of wine which they refused to refund as we’d had a glass out of it and said they only sell it by the bottle not glass so couldn’t take back either. So we had to leave with bottles in hand. How this place got its 4 stars I don’t know.we left and went to the Duke of Wellington and had a fabulous dinner there. I will post a picture of the difference between the two. The Kingslodge inn dinner is on the left of the split picture. The difference is huge! A full picture of what we were served up is also uploaded. Will definitely not return, it’s a shame as the day before we went to this chain in Lindisfarne and the fish and chips we had there was superb and the service excellent. AVOID THIS PLACE IF YOU WANT A GOOD HOT ROAST DINNER.

Ended up here as husband was on a delayed train Staff were excellent. No complaints here at all. Service was good. What wasn't good, was the fact that the sirloin steak was £23.50 and it didn't even come with chips. It was an extra £3 for 7 chips. Yes you read that right. 7 chips. Total bill over £60 for 2 glasses of wine, a cup of tea, Steak and chips and two starters (deep fried cauliflower with curry mayo and loaded chips). Cauliflower and curry mayo was lovely. Loaded chips weren't all that. All in all. Not worth the money.

We had pre-booked a table for 13 people for 2pm for Sunday lunch as it was our Mother's birthday. On arrival we were shown to a table for 4 people! After asking again about our booking the manager came over and said he would jiggle some tables around for us but there was also an hour wait for food. We ordered 9 Sunday lunches (£14 for beef,£13 for pork), 1 vegetarian Sunday lunch (£13) and 3 children's meals (£7.50 each) (I burger and 2 chicken goujons). After waiting an hour we were served barely warm meals, which 3 were sent back. The vegetarian gratin was a few pieces of sliced potato on top of mashed potato with a sprinkle of cheese on top and a tablespoon og gravy!. Some if the dinners had a roast potato, others didn't. Some had a teaspoon (I'm not exaggerating) of turnip some didnt. What was on the plate was 2 slices of beef, half a roast carrot, half a roast parsnip, a roast potato, a dessert spoon of mashed potato, a dessert spoon of red cabbage, a teaspoon of turnip a yorkshire pudding and a little bit of gravy. We werent asked if we wanted any sauces or anything else or if everything was ok at any point during our meal. The kids goujons were sliced, burnt chicken breast so they wouldn't eat them and came with half a dozen fries as did the burger(you get more value at mcdonalds) We complained to the manager who halved the bill for us but we will not be returning or recommending it.

A friend and I visited on Tuesday 22nd August with the two dogs I am currently looking after. The pub is very dog friendly which was great. I had a lovely glass of cider and we found a cosy table. The pub was pretty quiet. Food was ordered. My starter of deep friend prawns was delicious and arrived after about 20 minutes. However, our main courses, which we chased up three times, didn’t arrive for well over an hour. We never got to try them as we were late for something else and had to leave. We did get a full refund but service and communication were very poor. We asked to have the food packed up so we could eat at home but we’re told they didn’t do a take away service so had nothing to pack the food in. Odd. All in all, a very disappointing outing. Won’t bother again.

We had the most beautifully cooked and presented pan seared rump of lamb with gratin potatoes and vegetables. Truly delicious! Followed by a generous serving of scrumptious rhubarb crumble and raspberry ripple custard. A great dinner which with wine , coffee and tip came to £35 per head. Just be aware the online menu was substantially different from the menu on the table - neither of my two online choices turned out to be available in the real world. Also the potato gratin portion was so small I thought for a moment they had forgotten it so if hungry order a side or two. But everything we had was awesomely good!

Altho’ we have lived in Durham for a couple of years we had missed this gem. Very pleasantly unexpected surprise so close to centre and full of charm. This is a lovely old hotel just off the centre of Durham City with fabulous decor, lovely warm welcome and clean interior. Although large dining area lots of both large and small nooks for any type of meeting. Our lunch was also great and good value for money. Lovely service by Amelia and her colleagues. We had roast beef & chicken lunches & all the veg was just right with nice individual jugs of rich gravy. Well worth searching this restaurant out if in the centre ...only a short walk under famous railway viaduct & on edge of forest/Greenland so handy for unexpected countryside walk so close to centre

The Kingslodge is local to me and I have been there several times recently for different reasons, and not been disappointed. I have not needed to stay at the hotel so this review is about food and service in the restaurant. Without doubt, this is pub grub but nothing wrong with that and it's good pub grub. The service is good and the ambience warm and friendly. Good beer as well. Dogs are welcome in the bar. There is a good car park, it's free and within walking distance of the town centre.

Very poor value for money. A meagre port of food that would be very difficult to describe as anything other than standard, measured chain pub grub. Nothing to write home about and definitely won't be getting a return visit. Chips in a metal basket, pudding in a glass - no style, no substance. I've read about The Inn Collection. On this showing, don't believe the hype. Artificial feeling - such a shame - feels like an unsympathetic refurbishment of a really good venue. The staff? Feigned interest. Can't blame them, serving up this tosh.

We came here on recommendation as few places allow dogs. We were delighted by what we found. Lots of tables in out of the way nooks to take our dog into, which was great. Good separation too. And for those who don't like dogs - there was plenty of space to avoid them. Excellent food, too. We tried much of the menu as a party of four, and nothing disappointed. Some things were a nice surprise and clearly the chef has imagination and creativity which is very rare these days. We also understand that the menu changes regularly, again speaking to the quality of the chef here. Nothing was hurried - the table staff were attentive and available, but never imposing. People have commented on the price of the food ... it's not a cheap restaurant, but doesn't claim to be and we found the prices to be very reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food and for the service here. All in all a lovely experience and given it was Saturday evening we were surprised at how quiet it was here. We will certainly be back and will be recommending to all!

Not long after we were seated our starters arrived - ham hock terrine & butternut squash soup followed by mains of beef & turkey then finished off with christmas pudding. All very tasty, all nicely presented & more importantly served by happy, smiley faced staff who always appeared happy to be serving you. After visits by family members who attended for Sunday lunches, we tried it out ourselves, the Sunday lunch we had was big, hearty and tasty, however the gravy was rather salty, which we've since heard from other visitors is what they've found also.

We live near one of the other hotels in this group and visit regularly for meals. When the opportunity came to visit the Kingslodge to compare, it was a no brainer.

We had a lovely meal on Friday evening. The menu was extensive and interesting. The staff were friendly and very efficient. The restaurant had a lovely ambience and the food was nicely cooked and full of flavour. The restaurant was spotlessly clean and used crockery taken away immediately. Although we live locally we had only just found this hotel but we will certainly be back in the near future.

Four of us ate here on a Monday night. The prawn and chicken tikka was overcooked and a bit dry, but the halibut curry was very good. The other two dishes (scampi and steak and ale pie) were not bad. The service was good and the ambience pleasant. They are obviously trying but apart from the first two dishes I mentioned, the menu was rather pedestrian. Still, other people seemed to enjoy it.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Durham, a stone's throw (you'd need a good arm), from the castle, the Kingslodge serves up really good food. The menu is interesting combining comfort food with more adventurous dishes. The portions are generous and the food is very tasty - and reasonably priced. Service comes with a smile.

Visited ‘The Kings Lodge Inn’ for the first time on Saturday night. Don’t know why this place has escaped me as I’ve been to lots of places to eat in Durham, perhaps because it’s hidden up some back streets, however, when you get there it just looks like a country pub!

We went to Durham for a few days break and decided on this hotel, mainly because it had free parking. Many of the hotels in Durham where on the same scale as this hotel- looking lovely and cosy, but when you had to pay extra for parking then extra for breakfast, this hotel was better value. The only problem was the dog friendly aspect- the room did smell of dogs- when booking the manager did reassure me it would be deep cleaned- sorry it wasn’t and the carpet had terrible stains- avoid room2. Apart from that the hotel was lovely and the staff where very attentive.

On arriving at Durham station it was a five minute walk to the Kingslodge Inn. I was with my mother for a short break and could not have been made more welcome. When registering we said amongst other things we were intending going to Beamish Museum and were immediately given a discount entry card from John. After settling in our extremely clean rooms we sat in the lovely front garden enjoying the peace and quiet. The lodge is a short walk from the centre of Durham with its magnificent Cathedral and Castle, both a must.

Our first time in Durham, We found the Kingslodge Inn better than expected. Comfortable rooms, nice public spaces and friendly helpful staff. We only ate breakfast there but it was very good and well priced.

Only been here once, but will definitely be returning again and again. Tucked away in a corner is this great looking building, with welcoming exterior and cosy highland themed interior making it feel very homely. The staff are very attentive and polite and the food was fantastic and arrived promptly. Hope to return again soon and maybe even stay the night.

Another visit to experience the nicely furnished and restful atmosphere of this city centre retreat. The staff are phenomenally friendly, food is scrumptious and our four legged, obedient companion is welcomed. I particularly like how the soup is a substantial portion; truly a bowlful.

Had a Sunday lunch here and I couldn’t fault it. Meat was cooked to perfection and the vegetables were flavoursome. This was all topped off beautifully by perfect weather. Found my self eating al Fresco in the gorgeous gardens. Thank you.

Fab place to stay when exploring Durham. We stayed here recently in one of the newly refurbished rooms. Great room, larger and smarter than we expected. From the minute we arrived to check in to the morning we left the staff were attentive, friendly and polite.

My brother brought my mother for lunch a week ago she was so impressed she booked a table for the family for Sunday lunch. 7 adults. The restaurant is lovely and wheelchair accessible. The service and food fantastic it was our waiters 1st day and he did a fantastic job. I have a citrus allergy and they couldn't have been more helpful. We all had starters and a main course and most of the group had a desert. There is a choice of a Sunday lunch and an extensive la carte menu. I had the Sunday lunch and it was perfect. Everyone enjoyed the meals and said they would come back again as there were many dishes on the menu we would like to try.

Ate here for the first time last night with my husband after recommendation from friends. Very impressed on arrival as the inn is decorated beautifully, with lots of space. We both had the fishcakes to start which were fantastic! Service was good and the young waitress who served us was very helpful. I ordered pulled beef brisket from the specials menu for my main. It was so disappointing. The beef was beautifully cooked but everything else was tasteless. The mash seemed to be some kind of reconstituted, dried slop with zero taste and the red cabbage was also lacking any flavour. The whole dish was drowned in a watery, insipid gravy. My husband had a chicken curry which he said was nice but again it was absolutely swimming in sauce and the chicken was over cooked. We had two lovely bottles of pinot which made up for our disappointing mains. Other customers food looked lovely so we think we had just ordered the wrong things and for this reason we would eat here again.

I booked a table for two during my stay in Durham but we were given the choice of the entire restaurant as it was quiet. First impression was it was a quaint, traditional pub-style building beautifully decorated with American reminiscence. We were immediately welcomed by a very cheery gent who introduced himself as Dave and passed over to a lovely young waitress who happily answered all our questions and went out of the way to ensure dietary preferences were met. I ordered the mushroom burger without chips, asking for the house greens, my only complaint is the greens were undercooked and tasteless. I had a lovely conversation with Hanna who convinced us to give the crumble a go and ensured we never went with an empty bottle of the house red. It was cooked divine and more than made up for the house greens. Compliments to the dessert chef on duty! It was shame we almost passe it over as the roadworks obscures the roads entry. Overall I was very impressed with the quality the restaurant strives for and would highly recommend.

My wife and I met relations that were staying here. We had a lovely meal and we were well looked after by the staff who were not pushy but kept us well stocked with drinks. Stayed until well after midnight and were not pushed to leave. Lovely place.
