Called in early evening for a meal. Start serving at 5pm. Had chicken supreme. Wished I'd had steak pie or lasagne, but chicken was fine but I tend to like stronger flavours. Veg (potato, mangetout and cabbage) was fresh and cooked well...still a bit of crunch in the greens, as I like it. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Will go back again.

Called in for evening food, was met by the new landlord, very polite, friendly , explained it was his opening day, my friend and I ordered from the menu, the service was quick, the food was simply fantastic, I ordered fish and chips which was cooked to perfection, well presented . My friend had chicken supreme, and we also have desert ( why wouldn’t you?!) our server could not of been more attentive and polite, lovely place, fab food, and very welcoming hosts- will be calling back to try the Sunday lunch menu soon! 5 stars from me

The Seven Stars Inn is very basic but was perfect for us as a budget stay over. As most of the reviews say you have to ring a number to get the key codes but for us it wasn't too much of a problem. One of the beds wasn't the most comfortable but fine for one night. The other people in our party reported comfy beds with warm rooms. The Seven Stars is situated in a very pretty village on the outskirts of Durham which worked perfectly for us. Reminder to bring shower gel and if you need extra blankets or duvet please request opon booking.

Booked this place online. Arrived to find a telephone no. on the door. Telephoned and was told that they do not work with the agency I used. The agency, Agoda, took my money for the accommodation! If they don't work with them then they should remove them from their website! After all it's not Rocket Science!! I had to find alternative accommodation at 8.00pm that night, now I have to retrieve the monies paid.

Beware! This pub is currently closed and only the hotel part is open. However, there is nobody at the premises for the check-in; just a piece of paper in the window with a phone number to call. Catch 22 is that there is no Wi-Fi in the hotel and there is no mobile signal outside. We had to drive around to catch somewhere the signal. Why the new management cannot send instructions for check-in to the guest by e-mail, prior to the visit, is anybody's guess. The key for the room we were given was not there, so we had to go again for a drive to catch the mobile signal and phone again. The second room we were allocated was fine and good value for money. But the whole experience was just weird and unpleasant.

Stay here for a brief visit to Durham. 2 adults 1 child . Had to book in over phone . Tried 3 different phones and very little signal .that was the first problem . On 1st impressions. Room looked OK. Then looked at furniture in room which was battered and very scratched . Then checked out on suite . Which had a cable sticking out of the wall . God knows if it was live or not .basin didn't have hot water .and toilet lid wouldn't stay up .slamming down if you didn't sit down fast . Shower tray drain was blocked , so your stood in cold water as you shower . Cleaners came in at 7am on a Sunday morning making quite alot of noise . Poor ppl who were sleeping. Location is about 10 mins drive from Durham. No phone signal what so ever.

The pub is closed as far as I can tell, it's accommodation only so check in is via telephone but there's no phone signal in the immediate area. There was something in the room I stayed in that I was very allergic to, nonstop sneezing and burning eyes despite antihistamines. Normally that's triggered by mould but there was nothing overtly obviously dirty in the room And finally as it's on a main road it's quite noisy, made worse by the room is quite warm so I needed the window open which obviously made the traffic noise louder. It was a choice between too hot or too loud. Pros - cheaper than Durham average, hot showers in average bathroom and comfortable bed. Feel a bit like Goldilocks writing that, but overall I'd recommend staying elsewhere before you choose this location.

If I could give this hotel 0 stars I would, informed on the day of arrival that the restaurant and bar was closed and breakfast would be unavailable although it is priced into the rate for the room, hence paying for a product we could not utilise. There is no service at this hotel, and you have to contact workers at a nearby “sister” pub 0.5 miles away. There is no WiFi included at the hotel either Upon arrival to the room, it was in horrific condition, with minimal facilities, understandably a “3 star hotel” however what was not expected was the rather large hole in the bathroom door from where a previous customer has presumably punched the door? Dirty cups and mugs, a dirty shower and a bed with hairs over it? Along with this there is only one latch on the window which is also broken and barely holding the window shut? Not a very good experience and definitely not good value at this establishment I would not recommend staying here. Further to this upon contacting the sister pub I was told that breakfast was not available and that I could come to the sister pub and pay full price for a meal although I have paid the additional price for bed and breakfast

Once we'd got access to the room, everything was fine, but guests need to be better briefed on the remote check-in procedure. In order to access the building, you need to enter a 6 character code into the key pad on the wall. Then you need to know your room number and its specific key-box code to access the room key. In our case, I sense that some of this detail got lost in the various emails that we received via Booking.com, so we (and several other guests) were obliged to phone up the owners to get into their rooms, which was obviously frustrating. However, once we got inside the room was spacious, well equipped, spotlessly clean, and comfortable, so we were more than happy with our choice. There's a relatively short and scenic walk from Shincliffe into the centre of Durham, so it's pretty well located and, as my personal preference is to avoid large chain hotels, I felt we'd made a pretty good choice.

The very worst place we have ever stayed in. Booked because it said it served evening meals - it didn't. Breakfast was very poor. Uncomfortable bed in very small room. A member of staff said they were open until 11pm and directed us to another pub for our meal. When we returned we found we were locked out and the place was in darkness. No way to get in - we hadn't got our key as knew we would be back before closing time. Pouring with rain, we waited hoping another guest might arrive but didn’t happen. Walked back to pub we had eaten in and luckily they were open and were very helpful. They were able to contact someone whe gave us a key code number. Walked back. No outside lighting but eventually found the key code site and got in. The next morning a member of staff said she had heard about what had happened - she seemed to find it amusing - no apologies whatsoever. Absolute nightmare.

The bedroom has everything you need. Clean bed linen and towels. The bathroom makes a noise that can be disturbing at night. The location is probably the weakest point as the hotel is 10 minutes away by bus from everything (except the restaurant) and there aren't so many buses, especially on the weekend. The phone number isn't reachable... Apart from that, the area is calm and the hotel is easy to find. Good price.

Omg the pub has been closed since start of January so only rooms are available total sham, yet still listed as pub which isn't the case. Not manned and only available by phone from 1400hrs to 2200hrs. Rooms not much better unable to fill kettle up as it's too big to pour water into it, ended up using shower head. Looking at the photos on their website, I thought I was going to have a comfortable week. The price seemed adequate for the area and close to where I would be working. There are no staff on site and it’s self check in. The pub was closed, the restaurant was closed, the WiFi didn’t work and absolutely no phone coverage. The entrance door is a fire escape and up 3 or 4 steps. Inside the door, are boxes with your room keys in. When I got there, it was quite dark and no lighting to find your key. I used the torch on my phone. The stairs are quite steep up to the room floor. There are 10 rooms in total. Don’t bring too large a bag, as the hall ways are excessively thin. The room, Was very shabby. I’m ex forces and have stayed in some nasty places. The decor is extremely dated. The furniture was like painted home made mdf, but to be fair, the room was a small and odd sized. The bathroom was an adequate size, but, the toilet seat was not secured to the toilet, the toilet brush was stained and covered in rust. Cobwebs in the corners. The shower was looking dirty as in it looked like urine stains all over the tiles and grout. The shower head wasn’t really connected to the wall as the screws had come out. The hose from the shower to the head was all broken and black stained. The shower head itself was covered in black and brown what looked like mould. Water pressure was really poor. The carpet had debris over it when I entered the room on my first day. The bed frame was metal and very wobbly and noisy. The mattress was extremely uncomfortable and was an old spring type and quite thin. I could feel the bed slats through it and hear the springs twang every time I moved. Pillows were very soft. Bed sheets were clean as were the towels. A full size kettle in the room was too big to fill in the sink, but over come by using a cup to fill it from the sink. The window was an old type sash window. The locks were broken, but the window opened. The TV was very small and quite unwatchable as the reception was hit and miss. The room was cleaned during the week when I was out. For the £250 I paid for the week, I honestly feel robbed. Poor sleep and poor shower I truly feel the price I would have comfortably paid and been fair would have been £75 for the week. I wouldn’t stay here again.

Just been for Sunday lunch. Poor. The mashed potatoe had raw bits in it, the beef was described as pink, it wasn't, plus there wasn't much of it. Brockley with cheese sauce? Kind of worked. The worst part was the service & staff. Very abrupt, asked for salt & pepper (you would assume would be on table) and asked if we wanted vinegar- with Sunday lunch. Veg boiler death, and waited ages for veg, then waited again for mustard and horseradish & again for gravy. It's hit and miss this place, but last two times have been a miss. Think will leave it for a while. Think the management team should take some time out and train the staff on service and front of house manners Disappointed.

We were seen to instantly and taken to our table, drinks arrived quickly after ordering and as we had already looked at the menu prior to the visit we were able to order our food straight away. Of the two pubs in Shincliffe, this used to be the 'posh' one, with both excellent service and very good food. The staff are still as friendly as ever, but the place has clearly fallen on hard times since one of the big 'pubcos' got its claws into it; the decor is visibly suffering inside and out, letters are falling off the sign at the front and even the old pay-phone has been trashed - always a sure sign that no-one cares much. Stay overnight and, while the price is not stratospheric, they can't even offer the simplest of breakfast - it's a B&B without the second B! There is reason to be optimistic that the worst of the damage can be reversed once the place transfers to less rapacious owners than Enterprise Inns, but in the meantime The Rose Tree looks a better bet.

Have been eating here for many years, including Christmas Dinners and evenings events, parties etc., I just can't ignore any longer the depressingly consistently poor service that seems to still hold this potential goldmine of a village pub back. There are new owners and I really hoped this would push a new wave of life into it. But so far alas not. Candle holders sit on the tables - never lit, with no candles, and last week was told they were just decoration, they never light them. Lighting is either all on or all off, like an autopsy suite. I have lit my own candle on our restaurant table the last 3 times we have attended. No one cares. The tall gentleman who I think is part of the new team would be better at a wake than here. No smiles, no conversation, just points at the table and says here. Where is that wonderful country pub welcome??!! Because of this the rest of the team seem to follow. Menus are horrible wipe clean plastic and already on the table, meaning the staff do not need, and simply don't have any conversation. The table you book is just pointed at with little more than a "here" and then they're off - rushing back to huddle round the bar for a chat with themselves. Three times I've been lately - never had a smile, never had a "how was your meal" that was anything less than I've been told to say this, and never once been asked if I would like another drink. The bar staff just look at you until you've ordered then go and get on. Last Sunday lunch, food arrived "beef". Slam. "Pork" slam. Sauces? And that is it.There's a lovely little dining room I've had family events in before and the last couple off times, the lights have been off, the staff just stopping to look at themselves in the mirrors, meaning the dining room has this dark, soulless abyss at the side. The food remains reasonably OK and consistent which saves this place, but I sadly think this might be it for us. I can't take guests anymore as the service is so embarrassing and clearly from the top down, no one seems remotely interested. Surely the basics should be right - but these are also lacking. We had guests recently stay and all they could feedback was a grubby room with a very uninterested landlord. Fingers crossed things get better as I love this place and it should be the heart of the community though I doubt I'll be back for some time. I hope a lick of paint, a smile and a sense of community starts to develop.

Looked forward to it for weeks; we're fairly regular customers so our expectations were high.Sadly our meal was not up to normal standards - mashed potato was lumpy, although in fairness it tasted OK. The vegetables were underdone. Not al dente, but undercooked. The brussels sprouts which I love were rock hard and inedible. Small issues, I agree, but we paid well over £130 for our meal and I do think things could have been better. The service was excellent, the meal wasn't.

We have visited many times and enjoyed the atmosphere and food. We booked for a family get together in December. On the whole the food was good and most enjoyed a variety of Liver, deep fried Haloumi, Turkey dinners, pasta, pork loin and then disappointment with the Pork belly. Two people ordered these and stressed "without prawns". They turned up with prawns. As this wasn't to do with an allergy, both were quite happy to have the prawns removed. Then one of the joints of Pork was undercooked. We let the staff know and it was taken away, not sure if it was going to be re-cooked, but think another joint arrived. Overcooked and tough. By the time this arrived we had all finished our meals.Three members of staff dealt with this and not one apologised, they were just matter of fact. "Sorry", would have at least softened the blow. It won't prevent us going back, as it has always been a good experince previously.

We have been coming to the Seven Stars regularly for years. It has recently changed hands but the food standards have stayed the same and the little touches that have been recently added, a proper cover for the menu and the table decorations, have only enhanced the experience. On a majority the staff are fantastic and friendly, bar one waitress who seems to be working under duress, which is a shame, as mentioned, the rest of the staff are superb. We will keep returning as a couple, with friends and with family.

I stayed here for a few days having on a previous occasion had a couple of lunches here, they were great lunches, decided on my visit to Durham to try the B and B, well worth it, I had a single room, small but perfectly adequate, I didn't spend much time in the room, it was clean and tidy, I had a couple of breakfasts here too which were excellent, would certainly want to stay here again, not far from Durham, it is near the bus stop into the City, although it is supposed to be within walking distance, but a bit far for me, but plenty of people would find it easy enough, well worth a visit.

Didn't eat but called into the bar hoping the new leaseholder would offer a friendly local pub and restaurant. At 8.15 pm on a saturday evening we were the only two people in the bar. During our 25 minutes in the place we received less than ten words from the tall miserable male who apparently holds the licence I ordered the drinks - he said nothing but ' £6 Pounds', I Asked, have you just taken over? response - 'Three weeks ago'That was it!!Potential for the establishment is huge but not with this person. Seems to have similar pedigree from other pubs he has been involved in.

I visited here with my family for Sunday lunch, the food was delicious and the seating area very cosy, it is also perfectly located for a trip to the local garden centre.

As the place was under new ownership, we thought we'd see if things had improved. It is pleasing to say that things are much better. The service was good, the food was good and the costs reasonable. We'll go back.

We had a family lunch at the Seven Stars and have nothing but good things to say about it. We used to be regular visitors but, after moving home, haven't been in the area for a while.

Fortunately the chef and some of the servers who worked for the previous owners remain so the standard of the food is unchanged and the old staff are friendly.

We stayed a few nights here after an AirBnB flat and it honestly didn;t feel very different. The pub obviously wasn't very busy and didn't stay open in the evenings so we often returned to a darkened hotel. It meant there wasn't any life in the place and whilst that wasn't really an issue for us it might cause others issues, especially if you're not comfortable with letting yourself in or staying somewhere where there's no obvious staff presence. That said, parking was fine and the quick and cheap bus into Durham left from virtually outside the door.

As a student at Durham Uni it can be hard to find new places to eat in the centre. I visited here twice, once with my mother and once with my boyfriend.

Durham is a really unfriendly place for dogs so we chose this pub because it is dog friendly. It turned out to be a good choice. There was a good choice of both sandwiches or main meals which we could not resist, especially as they are on special offer. The steak and ale pie with a suet crust was delicious, lovely pastry and tender beef. The vegetables were also good. Service was friendly and efficient.

All staff were very friendly and helpful from check in to check out, even ringing me to say I had left a pair of boots and then dropping them off in town to me! The pub is full of character and the food and drinks were excellent. Despite being on a main road, it was very quiet. Free car parking on a quiet side street, a decent pub/restaurant a short walk away and a decent bus service

Came for lunch with friends who had stayed here before. Lovely feel to the place. The lady who looked after us was really friendly from the start. We ordered mains 3 of us had the beef pie and my partner had liver. The chips were the highlight for me. We then decided to share and sticky toffee pudding and it was excellent I’d say the best I’ve had. Would definitely recommend and will definitely visit again if we’re in the area.

Fantastic food, dog friendly, very well priced as well. Only drawback is location you probably need to drive to it or a hefty walk from nearby town and villages but worth it 100%!

I was here a on Friday gone, getting together with a friend for a coffee and chat. Throughout our conversation we were disturbed by a loud noise coming from the counter area, a loud grinding noise, that echoed all over. It was similar to being in a loud pub and I could just about hear my friend speak. It was annoying and shouldn't be done where customers are. We won't be coming back here again.

Friendly staff and relaxing atmosphere, even when it's busy, I enjoyed going in each day I was staying at the Premier Inn
