As a member of the RA I used to use this restaurant regularly. It had a few issues but mostly you got good quality freshly prepared food. The RA have presumably employed consultants, at great cost, to advise them on the restructure of this restaurant.. Hopeless. But at least less people using the restaurant means you can get a seat on a Saturday which is always difficult previously. On each of the two occasions I have visited in the last month the person on the table next to us completely unprompted has complained about the changes. Now you get 'fresh' food in a box / bag (i.e. soggy usually), there is no wine served at lunch time and it looks more like a Pret rather than a pleasant place to sit and relax and enjoy the food. I have tried to give them feed back (email and a phone call). Email has been ignored and no phone call back following my leaving a message with a temporary member of staff. I find that quite annoying

The sandwiches were ok, though plain avocado on white bread was odd and bland. The tiny cakes were nice but tiny. The single scone each was either horribly overcooked or stale (probably the latter) - it was dry and hard. No-one asked how it was, perhaps, because they knew what the answer would be. The worst afternoon tea I have ever had, with the worst scone I have ever had. One to avoid.

After eventually finding the restaurant we settled in for our afternoon tea to end our day at the summer exhibition. Very disappointed. We were the only customers and felt like we were an inconvenience. Service very slow. Choice of tea limited to English Breakfast or Earl Gray. All sorts of weird things with the food. No idea what the sandwiches were. Scones were minute but with large serving of cream and jam. My friend had ordered vegetarian but got given vegan - so no scones and cream but some fresh strawberries and strawberry jam....how does that work? Cannot recommend Afternoon Tea here.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. We are members so knew that we could eat there at any time so chose lunch. We found it very hard to find. We walked through the members room and got lost, having to ask at least 2 different people for directions. It is down 2 flights of stairs to a fairly dismal dungeon with no windows although the walls are nicely decorated. I believe there is a courtyard but we were not shown this so ate inside. The waiting staff were very pleasant and efficient and the pace leisurely. The food tasted good but quite expensive at £72 for 2 which included a tip, 2 courses,1 side dish which was essential and 2 glasses of wine. It was pleasant but not outstanding.

You won't be looking for bargain-priced food, but then again if you choose to eat the Royal Academy's cafe you'll not be short of a bob. The food is imaginative, often vegetarian or pescatarian, and well-presented, even if chilled replacement dishes mysteriously appear from the kitchen the second someone helps themselves to a fish salad or a fancy drizzled offering from the displays.

It is a really interesting space - dark green walls with sculptures or fragments of ancient friezes (or first class plaster copies) attached to the walls and superbly lit. The atmosphere is soberly reassuring and we like it. There is not only a restaurant but also a café, a cocktail bar, and a garden. We met friends there and managed to get a corner table. We enjoyed great service, good food, and superb wines. I arrived at the Royal Academy (Burlington House, Piccadilly) to see the Summer Exhibition and, on the off-chance that there might be a table available at short notice, popped down into The Keeper's House, a fairly recently developed restaurant in the lower ground area of this rather wonderful building. Despite wanting to lunch alone, there was a table available for 1.30 so I toddled off, saw the (interestingly curated) 250th exhibition as well as the brilliant 'Great Spectacle', a fascinating history of the Summer Exhibition before making my way back to this rather special restaurant in the eyton & Byrne chain.

We booked for afternoon tea with some American friends visiting London. The price was very reasonable. Arriving at “the restaurant” it appeared deserted. After a few minutes wait a waitress appeared and we were taken to our table. As the only customers we were asked if we’d prefer the background music on or off. The menus arrived and it was explained that the different teas on the menu were accurate the selection of cakes wouldn’t match. Ordering different teas, mine was the only one not available :( the tea and towers of food arrived. It worked out at 4 fingers sandwiches each. Egg and mayo, chicken and mayo, salmon and cream cheese, cream cheese and cucumber. All very pleasant but the bread slightly older than maybe it could have been. 1 scone each :( but we did get extra clotted cream and the Jam was really fruity. 3 small cakes each, a strawberry cheesecake with chocolate side, a tiramisu and a pistachio cake. The best being the tiramisu. After a day sight seeing it was nice to relax in the air conditioned room and take our time over tea. Compared to others we had looked at great value for money, my only negative, maybe 2 scones each would have made it appear even better value for money by for less than £20 a head I’d go again.

Having been to the American Gothic exhibition at the Roual Academy we decided to try the basement restaurant. The experience started well with welcoming staff and our order taken promptly. We ordered off the a la carte menu. For starters I ordered the crab ravioli which was somewhat drowned it its broth and had little flavour. My husband had the Smoked Pork Belly which he described as coming from the rough end of the pig as was very dry and tasteless. For mains I had the rissotto which I would describe as okay but no more than that and my husband had the Superfood Salad. A major component of the salad was broccoli and it was clear from looking at it that it was overcooked - so overcooked that it was inedible. When the waiter removed the plate and we told him the broccoli was not good. A lady, who we can only assume was a manager, appeared at our table and said that she had checked with the chef and he said it was fine. Well if the chef thought that was fine then a new chef is required!

I could actually smell the lamb the others ordered and I'm a vegetarian and it smelt tasty! The cauliflower with raclette that I ordered out of interest was dry cauliflower and a slice of melting raclette cheese lying on the top. That was it. I could hardly be bothered to eat I was so disappointed. I was asked at the time how it was and I did tell the waitress. I shall not be making a beeline back which is a shame as it's in a good area. This is an interesting space and the restaurant area is dark but very comfortable and a nice place to chat as noise levels are good. The food and service left a lot to desired though. The sandwiches were dry and uninteresting and the huge amounts of mustard in the ham and mustard sandwiches made them unedible! We did complain and got a few more to replace them. Cakes and scones were bland. There are plenty of better places to get an afternoon tea in London. No one came to check if we were ok or needed a refill of tea - in fact no one even bothered to ask if everything was OK as we were leaving. Very poor customer service. There was a fair bit about this experience that was disappointing. The mix of sandwiches was chicken and salmon heavy and not equally divided so my husband and I had to Rock Paper Scissors for the egg mayonnaise! One round appeared to be made up of roast chicken leftovers that fell out as you tried to eat it. The scones were dry and the cake selection uninspiring. Perhaps the greatest sin was the tea. When I asked for another pot it was obvious that hot water had been poured over the used tea leaves. On the upside, the service was polite and the champagne delicious. But I would not recommend this experience.

We ordered the octopus carpaccio, which was ok but not outstanding, and the crab salad with Cox's Apple and Kohl-rabi, which was absolutely terrible. There was an enormous pile of batons of kohl-rabi with a very few slivers of apple and a scarcely-visible teaspoonful of crab. As Kohl rabi is more or less cabbage-stalk this was an extermely unappetising dish and we left it. The main courses we had were rack of lamb, which was beautifully cooked and presented, and veal escalope with lemon, capers and parsley. The veal portion was very generous and nicely cooked, scattered with capers and sprinkled with lemon juice, but the parsley was served as a vegetable! There was abouty a cupful of leaves in a mound on the plate; whilst parsley is delicious as a herb it is hard going as a vegetable. The desserts were only so-so, the pastry on the plum and apple tart wasn't cooked underneath, flabby raw pastry not a good experience. The service was excellent, both of the waitresses who served us were absolutely charming and efficient (and took the kohl-rabi thing and the desserts off the bill although we had not complained about the latter). It's a lovely space with 2 separate rooms but I don't think we'll go again.

My fourth visit this year to the Keepers House restaurant at the RA and I am sorry to say that after an encouraging start, following an extensive refurbishment, things have gone steadily downhill. The warm welcome has gone, as has the excellent and attentive service, which was evident at the opening. The service is now slow and lacking in interest, our waiter did not engage with my party and displayed no knowledge of the menu or wine list. The food was ordinary and although passable, lacked anything special. The whole experience is best described as ‘dull’.It always strikes me as odd that a restaurant in one of London’s foremost centres of art, has no artwork on the walls, just plaster copies of architectural features. Surely, this space should become an integrated part of the academy with constantly changing displays of paintings, prints etc. for diners to enjoy and perhaps purchase.

Un buen sitio para comidas o cenas de trabajo. Estuve en una convención en Londres y nos llevaron allí a cenar. Todo bien, comida, servicio. Lo único que a las 11 de la noche ya nos estaban echando, eso sí, muy educadamente.

We took 3 American guests for afternoon tea, hoping to impress them with a typical english tradition. Luckily they did not know what to expect. The House itself is very dark and is very difficult to find your way in and out!We were the only people having afternoon tea at 3pm. There was no atmosphere and we felt like we were in a dungeon on a beautiful sunny day.The afternoon tea was very average.Fingers sandwiches, scone & some little fancies. It was up to us to find a waiter & ask for our tea to be topped up. And when we did we were given a large caterers style stainless steal jug of hot water and left to top up ourselves. I gave up trying to get a decent cup of tea.We have been to many afternoon teas in London & I can safely say that this was the most disappointing. As we had guests we did not complain or make a fuss. I hope our friends from the US have not been put off by the experience & will enjoy a good english tea else where.Sorry.

A visit for lunch prior to the gallery was a calm event - to the point that we were the only diners at midday for the first 30 minutes or so and I note that we had been told that they were very busy when booking for a later time.It is an interesting burrow of corridors and rooms that you enter from a pleasant open air terrace bar area. It is comfortable and we liked the style. The food was good and with a little tweaking 'would be very good'. The pricing was reasonable for this venue in central London and we,a party of three, all enjoyed our lunch. We will come again but the restaurant should be a little more accommodating when visitors make their reservation.

We enjoyed a tasty supper but were disappointed, having read so many good reviews of the restaurant, our expectations of a gem hidden away in Piccadilly were not met. We dined (a table of 4) at 8pm. The bar was full and we had a drink outside in the tropical garden which we found rather depressing unfortunately. In the restaurant there was only one other table of 2 taken during the whole evening and we felt the restaurant to be rather dull and gloomy. It may be quite different on a busy evening. We were there mid-week, the waitress said that Fridays are busy. However the food was nice. The octopus carpaccio was really good, as was the cod en papillote. We asked the waitress to change the music as it dulled the mood and ambience and she did put on something more cheerful, even she suggested that she was bored with it. However, the staff were friendly and the service was good. One of our table actually wanted to leave and find somewhere else to eat, but did admit that the food was nice. We didn't stay for dessert because we felt a bit on our own in the middle of London.

Went for dinner with a friend after visiting the summer exhibition. Drinks at the bar combined with a small walled garden provide a great escape from the bustle of the west end. Our food was good but with out any massive wow moments. My crab and fish stew were both full of flavour. Reasonably priced wine list. Recommended

Dinner for 4, two bottles of wine three courses £221 Inc service. We had starters of dressed crab and an asparagus. Followed by a fish stew, guinea fowl, artichoke tortellini, pea & asparagus spelt risotto, all taste and enjoyed. Barely had room for dessert, a chocolate torte and a cheese plate. Again all delightful. We made our way to the bar and discovered a lovely hidden garden. An oasis in central London. The coffee was perfect. Worth booking a table.

This is a convenient place to eat if you are visiting the RA, and although it was cosy and relaxed on a wet day in April I imagine it would also be lovely eating on the patio in summer. The food was delicious and there were good if slightly unimaginative veggie options mainly involving pasta. However, I'd say the portions were pretty small for the price - we spent £100 for two of us on two courses and drinks and I was still hungry. The service was excellent.

The menu is modern British and from 19£ quite affordable for the central location, but the real draw is if you are looking for a patio space.

I have eaten at The Keeper's House three times in the last year, once upstairs and once downstairs for meals, and on one occasion for coffee. I did not know until my most recent visit that the caterers were Peyton and Byrne, a firm that I had used previously for a private function and with which I had been highly satisfied. This review is a composite of my three visits over the last year. The Keeper's House is a pleasant venue, tucked away at the side of the Royal Academy providing a haven of calm especially at off peak times. For my first visit (Nov 2015) I ordered a Monkfish Burger and was advised that it would take some time to prepare and I was surprised when it arrived substantially faster, in a few minutes. It was not especially good and rather expensive (£16.50) for what it was. I enjoyed a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The service was ok but I recall two of the staff having a conversation that would have been better in private.Next was coffee on the ground floor, early one weekday morning in March 2016. This was fine if unexceptional. This area does seem to get very busy so perhaps best to arrive early, or at least out of peak times. The most recent meal was in the downstairs bar area (June 2016). I ordered a dressed crab dish to be told after several minutes that this was no longer available. I chose a steak burger instead. My expectations turned out to be too high and I was really quite disappointed with my choice. Yes it was better than a fast food version (as I would expect for £14.50) and in fact the burger itself was ok, but it was smothered in cheese and wrapped in very tough bacon, both of which in my view were totally unnecessary. Perhaps these had been specified on the menu but this was a far cry from the crab I had yearned for. The waiter dropped my drink, breaking the glass, and had to return first to clear up before bringing me another. We all know accidents happen but the bar was not busy and the floor was clear. I tried three times to call a waiter for the bill. Eventually I went to the bar. Another order or two was delivered before I was able to pay. The 12.5% service charge was of course added. I did not feel it justified but could not face the hassle of arguing for it to be removed. On balance, the venue is good but from my experience the food and service need to be improved.

Our group of mainly American and Canadian friends were the only folk in the room, so we were able to relax and enjoy ourselves without worrying about being noisy / intruding on others. Nice room - obviously an old timbered building, with green screens put up as walls. Very nice service. Some slight confusion as to how many on the booking, but resolved with no hassle. Food was very tasty and nicely presented. We had some of the little cakes left, so asked for a "doggy box" - and were given a few more in the foil wrapped takeaway. That was a nice gesture. If I'm honest, there are better afternoon teas in London, but you get what you pay for - this was less expensive than most, but definitely value for money.

Apparently there are several venues set within The Keeper's House at Royal Academy of Arts. Our group enjoyed afternoon tea at The Restaurant with is located in the Royal Academy's lower ground-floor dining rooms. After reading a substantial number of reviews on TripAdvisor, I'm wondering if everyone is referring to the same locale. We found the service to be exemplary. The wait staff conducted themselves professionally and without being either intrusive or judgmental. I could easily become addicted to The Keeper's House Restaurant's finger sandwiches, mini-cakes and mouth-watering buttermilk scones. The clotted cream and gourmet jam almost help to create an entirely new food group! The prices are quite reasonable and the dining areas are well maintained. My only complaint concerns the men's restroom located down a rather dark corridor past a set of stairs. There was no toilet paper, no toilet seat covers, no soap (or dispensers), no paper towels, no disinfectant, no hand dryers and no hot water. I've encountered outhouses better stocked in the Alaskan wilderness. Other than that, it's all good.

This is a really cool place right in the Royal Academy. We've hosted two big events there - they have a great room for up to 45 people seated for dinner. The food there has been great and everyone loves the location. Additionally, I can't say enough good things about the staff. They were easy to work with and before the guests arrived I was scrambling to get name cards on the tables, the staff stepped in and helped me get the tents on the tables. It was a great success. I highly recommend hosting an event at Keeper's House.

The setting is the stylishly converted cellars of the Royal Academy in Piccadilly, architecturally sophisticated, with intriguing spaces adjoining the restaurant that are worth exploring. The dining room is quite small, a bit claustrophobic, walls dark green with casts of classical portrait busts. The service was quite charming but possibly inexperienced or not well-supervised. Not one course of three came to the right person at the right time at our table. A dish we were told was finished appeared at our table later without prior notice; two dishes arrived which were not for our table, etc. The wine was the best part of the meal - really good - but the server wanted to top up our glasses before I had even taken a sip. The food was truly poor - bland starters, tough meat. Very disappointing overall - and poor value.

This well hidden, sub-terranean restaurant has had some mixed reviews, particularly over its service. However on a recent visit for lunch we found the service timely and friendly. The a la carte menu is poor value, even for this part of London, but the more limited two courses for £20 was a better option at lunch time. The starter choices were rather dull and a better option for many might be the desserts; the crumble was delicious and the portion could have satisfied two people. The same could be said about the cheese and biscuits. In sum, a pleasant treat in a quiet venue very convenient to Piccadilly.

My wife and I visited on a Friday evening having had good pre-dinner cocktails in the bar.Surprised that was only half full so a little too quiet at moments, also reflecting the older average customer age. Service attentive but mixed - one waitress very quiet and lacking spark. Crab starter worked well, and delicious creamy buratta, sea trout main was good size and perfectly cooked with tasty samphire. Desserts very good - apple crumble very generous portion - I had clotted cream rather then ice cream. Wines best value by glass for flexibility per course. Enjoyable evening, needs a bit more of a buzz to get fully into its stride, hope the management get the marketing push right.

This small restaurant - part of the expanded Royal Academy - provided us with a much-needed and very pleasant break after an afternoon's exhibition viewing. The very attentive staff dealt swiftly and helpfully when my friend accidentally knocked her full wine glass over, while all three courses of our meal were excellent. It seemed a little odd that there were no salt or pepper sets on the tables (though they were quickly provided once we asked), and it's disappointing that the bill included a so-called 'discretioinary' 12.5% service charge. We prefer to tip in cash. But overall, a vewry good dining experience: we'll go again.

After the hurly burly of the exhibition, it was a joy to walk into this elegant restaurant. Divided into smaller manageable rooms, this subterranean restaurant is well worth a try if you are a Friend of the RA. Staff were delightful, elegant surroundings, and very good food. A word of warning on the portions though - having both ordered the same dish for starter, the portions were extremely unequal- and for that price this should not happen. - and sadly there were no staff in evidence at that moment to point it out, though point made later. We were disappointed with this.

We have eaten here three or four times, at lunchtime following a visit to an exhibition upstairs. It's a haven of peace, in our experience, and a welcome part of our visit to the RA. I have generally found the food to be well-cooked and presented and of a good standard, and have not suffered the poor service of which others have complained.

The food at the Keepers House is very nice. The atmosphere, when they have allowed 20 noisy teenage girls to use half of it, is like a school canteen. The service is excruciating - apart from one nice young lady who was only allowed to serve water and clear plates, so spent much of her time trying to get someone (anyone) to serve us. And why, oh why, do they put wine bottles out of your reach when they have no intention of filling your glasses - had they put it closer, we might have had a second bottle.

The lamb stew shown as a sample had vegetables and meat piled in the centre. Mine came as a soup, mostly liquid, 5 very small pieces of meat and a few vegetables. The taste was a little bland. I complained and received a cold brush off from the female on the till. The cold alternatives on the menu looked tasty and fresh and much better value. Also there was no discount for RA members unlike the previous day when I visited the public restaurant at the V@A. Not a very nice experience.Salads

Friday night and escaping from the saccharine delights of the garden stuff upstairs. The bar is small and packed and there is a faint whiff of drains. The waitress is excellent and we managed to corral three stools, the sort you see in nursery schools and we have a drink. Making our way across the corridor to the subterranean restaurant we weave our way through what seems to be an extension to the bar with tables populated by people who are.not drinking and seemed to be waiting for a friend to turn up. Again, the restaurant staff are excellent and very friendly. The dark green decor is fine but the food is pedestrian and disappointing. My soup was of the kind you have at home when half a dozen people turn up unexpectedly and it has to be made to go round. It tasted vaguely of turnip. Saturday now and I can't remember what I had for the main course. Apparently it was cod which I now recall sat on a bed of very wet green stuff. We didn't go near the puddings. Decent New Zealand Sauvignon £34.It could be so much better. At the moment the excellent front of house staff are being let down by lacklustre cooking.

I have visited this cafe for breakfast many times over the years and always had a good experience with nice food and friendly staff. However, I will not be returning after this morning's experience. I went in at ~ 07:30 for breakfast and ordered some white toast as I usually do only to be told by the surly man behind the counter that they do not serve toast! A cafe does not serve toast at breakfast time!!! I pointed out that when I was in just a few days ago I was served toast but he argued that they do not do this and went to start brandishing a menu to make his point. I just walked out. Have you ever heard anything so ridiculous? And looking at other reviews on here you see pictures of toast and people talking about toast. Having now read some of the other reviews the staff problem has clearly been a problem for a long time and yet he is still allowed to work there - or maybe he's the boss in which case even worse! The cafe really needs to sort this member of staff out. EDIT 18/10/24: I found a receipt from earlier in the summer where I had toast and there it is in black and white but according to the idiot behind the counter they definitely don't serve toast!!

Do not go to this pub it was a total disaster , so pub wise: no draft ale no draft corona no draft cocktails Food wise several dishes not available and being a small menu left you with a very limited choice ,no lamb no croquettes no fish cakes no bacon for the bacon cheese burger and to cap it off no mustard either .Also chef would not swap chips for mash I mean why not ? Finish the night with tea or coffee ? Nope none of them either !!! Then had a set to with the barman about having the service charge removed will never ever darken their door again !!!
